TOXICOLOGY AND APPLIED PHARMACOLOGY 90, 178 ( 1987) 1987 Toxicology Achievement Award JAMES S. Bus The Society of Toxicology Achievement Award is presented to a member of the Society of Toxicology who is less than 41 years of age at the time of the Annual Meeting and who has made significant contributions to the science of toxicology. This year’s recipient, Dr. James S. Bus, has published more than 50 scientific pa- pers in highly respected journals and is a coauthor of over 60 abstracts. He has been an invited speaker to a number of national and international meetings. The research interests of Dr. Bus have dealt with the metabolism and mode of action of industrial and environmental chemicals. One line of investigation con- cerned the rule of generation of reactive oxygen species in the toxicity of chemicals such as paraquat. As part of this work, Dr. Bus has made contributions to defining the host defense mechanisms that afford protection against such types of injury, as well as those of other toxicants. Other areas of investigation have focused on hexane- induced neuropathy and methyl chloride-induced reproductive effects. In the studies on methyl chloride he demonstrated that conjugation with glutathione is an impor- tant step leading to toxicity. In all these studies, Dr. Bus has demonstrated a strong capability to design crucial studies to elucidate mechanisms of toxicity and to then integrate this information into a broad conceptual framework. Dr. Bus was awarded the Bachelor’s degree in medicinal chemistry from the Uni- versity of Michigan in 197 1 and the doctorate in pharmacology from Michigan State University in 1975. He then served as Assistant Professor of Environmental Health at the University of Cincinnati before joining the staff of the Chemical Industry Insti- tute of Toxicology in 1977. After a period of productive research from 1977 to 1986 at the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology, Dr. Bus accepted appointment in 1986 as Associate Director, Pathology/Toxicology, The Upjohn Company. 004 1-008X/87 $3.00 Copyright 0 1987 by Academic Ress, Inc. 1987 Toxicology Achievement Award

JAMES S. Bus

The Society of Toxicology Achievement Award is presented to a member of the Society of Toxicology who is less than 41 years of age at the time of the Annual Meeting and who has made significant contributions to the science of toxicology.
