1984-85 Season Outlook by Russ L. Smith

If he were managing a baseball team instead of coaching a wrestling team, Northern Iowa's Don Briggs could look at his lineup and start thinking pennant.

"We're strong down the middle," is Brigg's appraisal of the 1984-85 Panther wrestling lineup. But Briggs isn't predicting a pennant -merely a finish among the top five teams nationally.

To do that will take some successful blending of talent in the lower and upper weights that were hit heaviest by graduation losses. However, the improvement won't need to be dramatic.

The Panthers finished 10th two years ago and 11th last year and their program is in such an advanced state of development that they can truly call the latter a disappointment. The difference between 11th and fifth last year, however, might have been no more than the difference between a healthy Lew Sondgeroth and a Sondgeroth whose season ended with a knee injury early in February.

Sondgeroth, ranked as high as second among the nation's 142-pounders before he was hurt last year, is back, healthy, and should be the wheelhorse of the Panthers' Murderer's Row which runs from 142 through 177 pounds. Sondgeroth, may however, wrestle at 150 this year, at least in the early dual meets, while senior Scott Morningstar, four-time Iowa high school champion, goes at 142.

Senior Dave Grant, who earned All-American recognition with an eighth place finish in he NCAA nationals last spring should start at 167. Sophomore Jeff Weatherman, who wrestled much of last year at 190 and has had success pver the summer in international freestyle competition, is expected to be at 177 this year.

The only break in that block of veteran talent comes where former All-Americans Jay Llewellyn and Dion Cobb held forth last year. The leading candidate at 158 pounds appears to be junior Bruce Hammel, a transfer from Waldorf Junior College.

Llewellyn and Cobb, who wrestled all the way from 158 to 190 pounds during their careers, are two of the five seniors the Panthers lost - half of the team's lineup. The others include Bob Hallman, the

2

NCAA runnerup at 118 pounds; two-time All-American heavyweight John Kriebs, now a fulltime member of Briggs' coaching staff; and 134-pounder Dave Morkel.

Senior Paul Kreimeyer, who has done most of his wrestling at 126, and a freshman redshirt, Perry Summitt, are strong contenders at 118 while a pair of Iowa high school champions, junior Pat Pickford and freshman redshirt Mike Schwab, will battle at 126.

It's almost a cinch there'll be a rookie at 134 since the decision has been made to redshirt sophomore Kurt Shedenhelm. It could be Pat Hogan, the two-time Don Bosco of Gilbertville state champion, or Chris Lembeck, like Summitt a recruit from Bloomington, Indiana. Dave Olmsted, the national junior Greco-Roman champion from the state of Washington, also will be in the race, but could be redshirted.

Dave Bossard, a freshman redshirt, figures in the conversation at 'both 190 and heavyweight. Bossard, who weighed about 220 pounds before practice started this fall, will have Waverly-Shell Rock High School state champion Joel Greenlee as his chief competition at 190.

At heavyweight, sophomore Dave Crees of Waterloo will vie with Bossard early in the season. Ken Kolthoff, a former Cedar Falls High School all-stater, will join the wrestling team for the first time after the football season ends and contend for heavyweight as well. Kolthoff is in his second year in school, but did not go out for wrestling last year.

One of the Panthers' top recruits, two-time national junior heavyweight champion Tony Koontz of Pennsylvania, will sit out the season to work on academics and join the mat club next year.

"It's going to be an interesting year," Briggs says. "My goals are to get in the top five, nationally. Eliminating unforeseen injuries, I think we can do it. I can even see five guys being in the top five in their weights."

Briggs, obviously, is thinking Sondgeroth, Morningstar, Grant and Weatherman. The fifth? "All but one of the top eight 118-pounders from a year ago are gone," he says. "Kreimeyer is capable of doing it."

Panther Wrestling Coaching Staff

Head Coach Don Briggs

Northern Iowa Head Coach Don Briggs enters his third season at the helm of the Panthers this winter, serving as only the sixth head coach in UN l's wrestling history. Briggs has recorded a 29-9 mark in his first two campaigns, including a school record 17 victories in his first season.

The UNI mentor served as an assistant to former UNI Head Coach Chuck Patten for seven seasons before taking the top reins. Briggs in his first two seasons as head coach has brought home 10th and 11th place finishes in the NCAA Division I Championships. Last season under Briggs' tutelage, the Panthers produced three Division I All-Americans for the second time since 1953.

This season, Briggs and his staff enjoyed one of the best recruiting efforts in UNI history, bringing in eight high school wrestlers from four states, including seven state champions and six All-Americans. Amateur Wrestling News ranked UNl's recruiting season as the seventh best in the nation this year.

Briggs, a native of Cedar Rapids, IA and graduate of Jefferson High School, received a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Iowa in 1971 . He enjoyed a successful wrestling career with the Hawkeyes, placing fourth in the Big Ten at 134 pounds as a sophomore and third place his junior and senior years. He was voted team captain as a senior.

Before coming to UNI, he held the assistant wrestling post at Cedar Rapids Prairie High School for one year. Briggs was named UN l's assistant wrestling coach after serving as a graduate assistant in 197 4-75. He completed his graduate work at UNI with a master's degree in physical education in 1975.

4

An avid hunter and fisherman, Briggs also lists skydiving as a favorite pastime. Along with his wife Diana, he has logged over 900 jumps.

Assistant Coach Jim Miller

Returning for his second season with the Panthers is a UN I All-American Jim Miller. Miller joined the wrestling staff in March of 1983 after a very successful stint as head coach at Charles City (IA) High School.

A 1975 graduate of UNI, Miller had an outstanding wrestling career for the Panthers. The former East Waterloo High School prep won a pair of NCAA Division 11 national titles in 197 4 and 1975 wrestling at 134 pounds. Wrestling at the NCAA Division I Championshps, he placed second in 197 4 and fourth in 1975. His second place finish in 1974 was the highest finish for a UNI wrestler in Division I since Bill Dotson's first place in 1963.

Miller coached for six seasons at Charles City, earning Iowa High School Coach of the Year honors in 1979 after his team finished second in the Iowa Class 3-A Championships. He also served a term as president of the Iowa High School Wrestling Coaches Association.

Page 8: 1984-85 Panther Wrestling

Assistant Coach John Kriebs

Another UNI All-American, John Kriebs, joins the Panthers' staff as an assistant coach this season, replacing Keith Mourlam, who joined the wrestling staff at the University of Iowa this summmer.

Kriebs, a 1984 graduate and two-time Division I All-American at heavyweight, compiled a career mark of 94-33-2, including 57 pins. Last season, the Panther giant posted a 24-4-1 record and was undefeated in dual action at 13-0-1 .

A former Dubuque (IA) Wahlert High School grappler, Kriebs won the Iowa high school heavyweight crown his senior year. During his last two seasons at Wahlert, he won 56 of 58 matches, including 44 pins.

- -.

Graduate Assistant Bob Hallman

Also assisting the Panthers' coaching staff this season will be 1984 UNI All-American Bob Hallman. Hallman, a native of Urbandale, IA, placed second at last year's NCAA Nationals, the highest Division I finish by a Panther since Jim Miller in 197 4. Wrestling at 118 pounds, Hallman compiled a UNI career record of 104-48-1, including 24 pins. The four-year Panther letterman was an undefeated state champion during his senior season in 1979 at Dowling High School in Des Moines.

118 Pounds

Coach Briggs : "At 118, I'd have to give the nod to Paul Kreimeyer, who wrestled at 126 for us last year, finishing second at the Regionals and qualifying for Nationals. He's a senior with more experience than anyone else at this weight, but that doesn't mean we can count out Perry Summitt, a freshman redshirt. Perry gained a lot of experience last summer, attending all the camps that were available to him. I think it will be a good battle between Paul and Perry. Also at this weight will be freshman Jeff Marcks, who could see a lot of varsity action for us in future years."

Paul Kreimeyer Senior Industrial Arts Education Wilton, IA

A two-time varsity letterwinner for the Panthers, Kreimeyer compiled a 20-15-1 record last year at 126 pounds, including a second place finish at the NCAA West Regional. He finished strong last winter, losing only one of ten matches before bowing to All-American Mark Zimmer of Oklahoma in his last match at Nationals. At 118 this winter, Kreimeyer will be replacing UNI All-American Bob Hallman, a runnerup at Nationals last season.

Kreimeyer enjoyed an outstanding career at Wilton Community High School, winning state titles his junior and senior seasons and recording a perfect 32-0 mark his senior year. He placed sixth in the U.S. Wrestling Federation Junior Championships. At Wilton, he also lettered in football , baseball, and track.

Kreimeyer's goals: "To be a 118-pound national champion, to have the team place in the top ten at the NCAA, and to go the season undefeated."

126- Mike Schwab, Pat Pickford

126 Pounds

Coach Briggs: "Seniority-wise, 126 would go to Pat Pickford, who wrestled some varsity last year behind Paul Kreimeyer and is ready to get in there. He'll be challenged by freshman redshirt Mike Schwab or the loser at 118 between Summitt and Kreimeyer. Pickford is one of our most talented people and has a lot of quickness and good technique. A knee injury two years ago has given him problems, and he has never fully recovered from that. "

Pat Pickford Junior Industrial Arts Education Ft. Madison, IA

Pickford is entering his third season with the Panthers after transferring from the University of Wisconsin . Last season he recorded an 11-9 record , wrestling behind National's qualifier Paul Kreimeyer. His top tournament finishes a year ago were third at the Minnesota Quad and fourth at the UNI Open.

A three-time state qualifier at Ft. Madison High School , Pickford won one state championship and two Junior Nationals titles and compiled a high school record of 88-15-3. He also lettered in track.

Pickford's goals: "I would like to be an All-American this year and have.the team strive for a top five finish. We have a tough schedule, which will help."

134 Pounds Coach Briggs: "This is really an open weight. There isn't any one person I can say will dominate because we're loaded with talent here. Looking at it alphabetically, Marty Anderson is a freshman redshirt who stayed around this summer and made a lot of gains in camps and working out. Joe Gribben, redshirted two years ago, will be a sophomore. He's a hard worker who's had a little problem with injuries. Freshmen Pat Hogan, Chris Lembeck, and Dave Olmsted were all state champions. Larry Shaffer, a sophomore this year, will give it everything he's got and more, too. Whoever comes out on top of this weight will have a lot of tough matches."

He was ranked as high as second in the nation last season before an injury sidelined him in early February. Now completely healed, Sondgeroth is ready to challenge for a national championship this winter.

Before joining the Marines, Sondgeroth wrestled at Colorado, earning runner-up honors in the Big Eight and .recording a 52-14 record . King - (18-7) 3rd-ACC; Chip McArdle - (31-9) 1984 ACC champ; Craig Spivey- (14-11-2) 3rd-ACC; Tad Wilson -(18-13-1) 2nd-ACC; Al Palacio - (17-8-2) '83 ACC champ.

Brief Outlook: Although Carolina has lost two of the ACC's tirest wrestlers in Bob Shriner and Bill Gaffney along with five other seniors to graduation, the Tar Heels return three ACC champs to complement a talented, but inexperienced squad. In fact , there are no seniors on the 1984-85 squad. McArdle, Aumiller, and Palacio are ACC champs, while Spivey, Wilson, and the Davis brothers (Tracey and Stacey) all return from strong 1984 campaigns. UNC should also be aided by a strong freshman class, several of whom are expected to challenge for starting spots.

Brief Outlook: Coach Deliddo will go into the season with his greatest team ever. The Bulldogs have three goals which should be accomplished - win the PCAA, finish in the top 20, and send more than four (last year's total) wrestlers to the Nationals. Saenz, Ismay, and Richburg have good chances of placing at the end of the season. Maurice Hernandez (126) should also contribute. Tough schedule awaits the 'Dogs' as six of the 11 home opponents finished in the 1984 top 20.

member this fall, already well established as a strong national contender. Former UNI head coach Chuck Patten led the Panther grapplers to 12th and 10th place fini!?hes in the Division I championships in 1981 and 1982, respectively. His successor, Don Briggs, has continued the UNI success, bringing home 10th and 11th place finishes in his first two seasons.

The Panther Wrestling Tradition

One day in the winter of 1923, students from Iowa State Teachers College walked on to the mat for their first intercollegiate wrestling meet. The ISTC squad faced Cornell College from Grinnell, and won 16-8. This opening victory proved an omen of the success that would follow. It was from that first victory that the first step was taken in a climb that would lead the program to the pinnacle of the wrestling world. Five decades and 400 wins later, the UNI wrestling program has a tradition that serves as a source of pride and a source of strength for its many fans.

THE PRE-WORLD WAR II YEARS

Paul Bender guided the first UNI wrestling squad to a 18-9-1 mark during his four year stint. That period is highlighted by victories over Oklahoma, Cornell and Wisconsin.

In 1930, Bender was appointed dean of men and turned the reins over to Dave McCuskey, the man most responsible for creating a wrestling powerhouse. McCusk~y compiled a 102-37-7 record while guiding the Panthers to an NCAA title, four runner-up spots and coached nine wrestlers to a total of 16 NCAA individual titles.

McCuskey's first season was highlighted by the crowning of UNl's first NCAA placewinner. Jesse Arends took second place in the 1~8 pound class while teammate Orville Orr placed third at 155. The next milestone came in 1937, when the Panthers crowned their first NCAA champion. Ray Cheyney took first place honors at 135 and led the team to a third place finish. That would be the highest finish for the Panthers until after the Second World War.

Following a three year absence from competition due to the war, ISTC in 1946 began its thrust into the national limelight.

Ten years ago, the Panthers won the NCAA Division II national championship held at East Stroudsburg State. Leading the Panthers at the 1975 national meet were three national champions - 134-pounder Jim

Panther Olympians Maynard Harmon - 1932 games, Los Angeles Gerald Leeman - silver medalist, 1948 games,

London Bill Koll - 5th place, 1948 games, London Bill Nelson - 1948 games, London Bill Smith - 1952 gold medalist, Helsinki

Pan American Games Mike Mccready - 1975 gold medalist

THE GOLDEN ERA

1946 marked the end of the war and the return of wrestling to ISTC. In its first year of competition ISTC crowned three NCAA champs. Gerald Leeman won the 128 pound title and was named the Tournament MVP. Cecil Mott won the 121 title while Bill Koll won the 145 pound title. This would be the first of three national titles won by Koll during his amazing career. The next year, ISTC would again place second in the tournament with Koll, Russ Bush (128) and Bill Nelson (165) taking

Miller, 142-pounder Ken Snyder, and heavyweight Randy Omvig (pictured above). Miller and Snyder also went on to win All-Americiln honors at the Division I meet that year at Princeton University.

titles. A Panther wrestler would again walk away with MVP trophy as Koll took the honors. In 1948, Koll was again named Tournament MVP as he captured his third title capping a collegiate career that saw him win 72 bouts without a defeat. In 1949, the Panthers won the AAU title and finished second in the NCAAs. Three wrestlers, Nelson (165), Bill Smith (165) and Keith Young (145) each won national titles.

In 1950, Coach McCuskey's long awaited dream came true. With the tournament being held in Cedar Falls, the Panthers captured the National title running away. With one of the most awesome mat teams ever assembled, ISTC racked up enough points in the semifinals to claim the title. Nelson (155) won his third title while Young (145) and Smith ( 165) won their second. Leverne Klar ( 128), Floyd Oglesby ( 136) and Fred Stoeker (HWT) all were placewinners.

In 1951, Young became the third ISTC grappler to win three national titles. The following year, 1952 marked the end of the McCuskey Era. From 194 7 through 1952, ISTC won 53 of 60 dual meets, claimed three MVP awards at the NCAA meet, crowned 16 NCAA champs, won two AAU titles, one NCAA title and were runners-up four times.

PANTHERS IN DIVISION II

Bill Koll assumed the head coaching spot after McCuskey's departure for the University of Iowa. Between 1953 and 1964, ISTC wrestlers produced a 71-42-6 record and three NCAA champs. Jim Harmon won the 157 pound crown in 1953, Bill Weick took the 155 pound title in 1955, while Bill Dotson became the school's only NCAA champ in both Division I and II, winning the 137 pound class in 1963.

Chuck Patten was named at ISTC's fifth head coach in 1965 and for the next 18 years guided the Panthers to dominance in Division II. His 218-86-8 career mark makes him the winningest coach in school history. He guided 58 performers to All-American status and tutored 16 national champions. His 1975and1978 squads won NCAA Division II titles while the 1970-72-74 and 80 squads placed second. His teams placed in the top three eleven times during his 18 year tenure.

Kirk Myers (190) and Gary Bentrim (142 & 158) were three time national champs for Patten in Division II action while Don Parker ( 177), Kent Osboe (HWT), Jim Miller (1 34) and Ken Snyder (142) were two time winners. Bentrim earned titles at 142 in 1976 and 1977 and took the 1978 championship at 158 pounds. Myers collected 190 pound titles in 1978-79-80 and capped his career in 1982 with a fifth place spot at the Division I tournament. He is the only Panther to win 30 or more matches in all four years of collegiate competition and compiled a career mark of 134-28-1 with 61 falls. Patten's 1972 national heavyweight champ, Mike Mccready, would go on to take the gold medal at the 1975 Pan Am Games and become Iowa's most successful GrecoRoman wrestler with a total of seven Greco National titles to his credit.

Panthers in Division I In 1982, Patten retired from coaching and handed the rein of control

to his long time assistant Don Briggs. Briggs led the Panthers to a school-record 17 victories in 1983 and has tutuored the UNI grapplers to 10th and 11th place NCAA Tournament finishes in his first two campaigns. The newest UNI mentor has produced four All-Americans in his short stint, including two-time All-American John Kriebs, now an assistant to Briggs. Bob Hall man's second place finish last year was the highest by a Panther in Division I since Jim Miller's second place finish in 1974.

Displaying the Panthers' North Central Conference and Division II National Championship trophies are 1975 Division II national runnersup Dick Erickson (177) and Dave Cunningham (118). Erickson and Cunningham were two of the five All-Americans on UNl's 1974-75 national championship squad.

DECISION - If no fall occurs in three periods, the contestant scoring the greater number of points will be declared the winner.

DEFAULT - One of the wrestlers is unable to continue wrestling for any reason.

DEFENSIVE STARTING POSITION - Defensive wrestler is on his hands and knees in the center of the mat and faces away from the timers' table. Both knees must be kept on the mat. The heels of both hands must be on the mat. The elbows shall not touch the mat.

DISQUALIFICATION - A wrestler is banned from competition, for flagrant misconduct, greasy substance on skin, objectionable pads and braces, illegal equipment or illegal costume. After the third penalty for illegal holds, technical violations, stalling or unnecessary roughness.

FALL-Any part of both shoulders or area of both scapulas held in contact with the mat for one second. Shoulders must not be out-of-bounds.

FLAGRANT MISCONDUCT - Unncessary roughness or abusive conduct determined by the referee to be flagrant. One team point is deducted.

FORFEIT - Received by a wrestler when his opponent, for any reason, fails to appear for the match. Wrestler receiving a forfeit must be dressed to wrestle at mat-side.

INTERLOCKING HANDS-A wrestler in the advantage position may not lock or overlap his hands, fingers or arms around his opponent's body or both legs unless the opponent has all of his weight supported on his feet or has him in a pinning situation.

NEUTRAL POSITION ,__ One in which neither wrestler has control.

NEAR-FALL - Offensive wrestler has control of his opponent in a pinning situation with both shoulders stopped within 4 inches of the mat or with one shoulder touching the mat and the other shoulder held at an angle of 45 degrees or less. A continuous roll-through is not a near-fall.

OUT OF BOUNDS - When the supporting parts of NEITHER wrestler are inside the boundary.

POSITION OF ADVANTAGE-A contestant is in control and maintaining restraining power over his opponent.

REVERSAL - When the defensive wrestler comes from underneath and gains control of his opponent, either on the mat or standing. Supporting points must be within the wrestling area.

SUPERIOR DECISION - Decision by 12 or more points.

MAJOR DECISION - Decision by 8-11 points.

SUPPORTING POINTS - Parts of the body touching the mat and bearing the wrestler's weight, other than those parts with which he holds his opponent. When on the mat, the usual points of support may be hands, feet, knees, side of the thigh, and buttocks.

TAKEDOWN - From a neutral position, a contestant gains control and places his opponent's supporting points down on the mat and holds there beyond reaction time. Supporting points of either wrestler must be within the wrestling area.

THREE-POINT NEAR FALL- When the near-fall criteria have been met uninterrupted for five full seconds. Only the wrestler with the advantage may score a near-fall.

TIME ADVANTAGE - A wrestler who is in control is gaining advantage. At the end of the match, the referee subtracts the lesser time-advantage from the greater. If one wrestler has an advantage of a minute or more, he is awarded a maximum of one point.

The University also operates KUNI-FM and KHKE-FM, whose 4,000-member "Friends" organization makes them two of the most popular public radio stations in the United States.

Northern Iowa competes in men's and women's athletics at the NCAA Division I level. .ln addition to a traditionally strong wrestling program, the University is competitive in football (Mid-Continent Conference, Division IAA) and men's basketball (Association of MidContinent Universities) . In women 's athletics the softball team has been especially successful, winning the AIAW Division II College World Series twice in recent years.

Northern Iowa is a state-assisted university, part of the Iowa Regents system that also includes the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. The University's more than 40,000 alumni in the United States and other countries lend additional support through the UNI Foundation and other alumni programs.
