You may wish to keep you own log of Calendar Year or Financial Year time points if you require 'year-end' statements for your own internal use. Any analytes with out of consensus performance will be highlighted in red and can be clicked for further details.

If your laboratory is outside of the acceptable limits of performance for any its rolling time-window scores (A, B or C scores), this will be indicated by a red traffic light symbol. It is the responsibility of the laboratory to undertake an internal investigation to establish the underlying cause and put in place corrective and preventive action. Please do not wait to receive a formal notification of performance from the Scheme Organiser or the National Quality Assurance Advisory Panel (NQAAP) before logging the non-conformity and, where necessary, acting upon the data contained in your report. A green traffic light merely reflects that your laboratory is performing as well as the state-of-the-art allows; it does not necessarily mean that your assay / laboratory performance is good enough clinically. The A scores for Total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and Triglyceride are all based on concentration- dependent degree of difficulty factors and, as such, are in the same ‘currency’ as the A scores in other Schemes. Non-HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol, Apolipoprotein B, Apolipoprotein A1, Lp(a) and Homocysteine do not yet have concentration-dependent degree of difficulty factors associated with them and so the 'A scores' for these analytes are only 'interim' at present.

You have until the close of Distribution 199 (24/06/2018) to submit late results / request amendments to results for Distribution 198. Please enter any late results or requests to amend non-analytical errors for Distribution 198 on the web under the usual Results button ensuring the correct Distribution number has been selected. You should include your name and a valid reason. Amending results is at the discretion of the Director and is not an automatic entitlement. We are not accepting any further requests to amend results or to change methods for Distribution 197.

Distribution 199 will be dispatched on 04/06/2018 . Results are due back in Birmingham by, notionally, 23:59 on 24/06/2018. Where your results appear as "XPL", it is because you did not report a numerical value for that analyte, but you did provide an explanation as to why a result was not reported.

The concentration ranges for inclusion in MAPS analysis for Total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol are 3.0 to 7.0 mmol/L and 0.7 to 1.5 mmol/L respectively. The MAPS specimen %bias limits are 8.5% and 15.9% respectively (A green tick is a ‘pass’; a red cross is a ‘fail’). The MAPS B score Limits are 4.0% and 10.0% respectively (A green square is a ‘pass’; a red square is a ‘fail’). The MAPS C score Limits are 2.7% and 3.6% respectively (A green square is a ‘pass’; a red square is a ‘fail’). The trend arrows point upwards if there has been a marked improvement, and down if there has been a marked deterioration. A horizontal two-headed arrow signifies ‘no change’. Specimens are only included in the MAPS analysis if the triglyceride value is less than 2.0 mmol/L. No information will be displayed for any specimen failing any of the inclusion criteria. The MAPS B and C scores are calculated over a six month time-window. It is therefore possible to have updated rolling time-window MAPS B and C scores even if there are no usable specimens in the MAPS concentration range in the current distribution.

The All Laboratory Trimmed Mean (ALTM) is used as the target value for MAPS analysis. MAPS B scores and C scores and their associated symbols and trend arrows will only appear on your report if a sufficient number of specimens in the current time-window meet the criteria for inclusion in the MAPS analysis. The Minimum Analytical Performance Standards (MAPS) scoring system is a National Quality Assurance Advisory Panel (NQAAP) initiative which we, and other EQA providers, have been including on our reports from 1st May 2012 for Total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. MAPS data provides useful additional information regarding how clinically relevant the result obtained by your laboratory was on any given specimen. Whilst MAPS is a useful additional feature, we can confirm that our full educational EQA design will continue to have ‘The ABC of EQA’ at its heart. All performance monitoring undertaken by Birmingham Quality will be based upon your A, B and C scores. Whilst we at Birmingham Quality are happy to explain our reporting conventions and styles in adhering to the MAPS principles, it is the NQAAP who are best-placed to provide the background and rationale. The NQAAP intend that MAPS will be applied by all EQA providers and will be applied to other clinical chemistry analytes in a phased manner. For more information about how to contact the NQAAP (Chemical Pathology), please see http://www.ukneqas.org.uk/content/PageServer.asp?S=960626227&C=1252&Type=G&ID=68 Not all analytes will immediately be suitable for MAPS, and similarly our probing EQA scheme design will not be restricted to the limited concentration ranges that underpin MAPS.
