Excerpts from a statement made byHon. Leo Bernier, Ontario Minister ofNatural Resources, on December 23, 1975

Things have changed so much thatCanada - and Ontario - is no longernearly so dominant in terms of nickelproduction and marketing as it once was.In 1950, about 85 per cent of the world'snickel was mined in Canada. In 1975,Canada's estimated deliveries will beabout 36 per cent of the world'sestimated capacity.

Many other countries are now activelymining nickel ores. These include theSoviet Union, South Africa, Australia,Brazil, Greece, Indonesia, New Caledoniaand the Philippines.

The Government cannot entirely protectthe nickel workers in the province fromthe pressures and reverses of the worldmarket. But we must do what we can.

Although the Sudbury basin is theleading producer of nickel in the world,Canada can consume only a small partof its own nickel production. Thus we aregreatly dependent on foreign buyers ofour product. And the decisions affectingthe two Ontario-based nickel companies- Inco and Falconbridge - must reflectthe realities of the world demand for, andsupply of nickel.

The 1976 world nickel capacity isestimated to be 780,000 metric tons.However, there is a further potentialcapacity of 422,000 metric tons aroundthe world, mainly as lateritic nickeldeposits.

According to some forecasts, thedemand for nickel in the free world in1980 will be in the 700,000 to 800,000ton range, and could reach one millionmetric tons by 1984.

In Canada, any short-run drop ineffective demand would deeply affectSudbury, and by extension significantlyaffect the economy of this province andthis country. The effects of short-runchanges in world market patterns canonly be avoided if Canadian producersare financially strong enough to affordinventory build-up at such times.

No government policy can establishjob security in the competitive market.But government policy can encourage, asit has, the kind of desirable developmentwhich helps company and workers alike.

Chances are more than even that forthe next five to ten years, Sudbury nickelproducers will operate in a world marketwhere costs cannot go up without foreigncompetitors winning out. Consequently,some high-cost producers may have toface a contraction of their operations orpossibly even a shutdown, if they cannotincrease productivity.

It is the duty of this Government toassure that any adverse effects onNorthern Ontario operations from thingshappening in other parts of the world areminimized. And the interests of the menworking in Sudbury and Shebandowanmust be jeopardized as little as possible.

If ndustry is to remain competitive forlabour in Canada, it must assure goodwages. At the same time, the Govern-ment must assure a good workingenvironment. Our mining industry will beable to afford these constraints only ifit is more productive and technically moreadvanced than its competitors.

My view is that it would beirresponsible to create either a political oreconomic climate which would make itimpossible for mining companies tocontinue to play a vital role in Ontarioseconomy. Industry is an essentialelement of society and must be enabledto operate effectively and efficiently, withdue regard for its proper and appropriaterole.

The Government of Ontario intends toprovide what help it can to assist thenickel industry through this difficulteconomic period. It is not, however, theintention of this Government to becomeclosely involved in the financing oroperating of the industry.

The Government proposes to defer, forfive years, the disallowance of foreignprocessing costs in the assessment of themining tax on the producer. This step istaken so as not to deplete the cash flowof the companies involved in thesedifficult times, and to ensure they havethe necessary financial resources tosustain employment in Ontario.

Along with this proposed allowance forout-of-Canada processing, the Govern-ment will, by Order-in-Council, grant(Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited) afurther four-year exemption under Section113 of The Mining Act. During this timeperiod, we intend to explore with thecompany all means of assuring continuedand stable employment in Sudbury. Weare taking this step with due considerationof the economic realities. It is theprudent thing to do today, in light of thecurrent difficult situation.

The Government will also considerchanges to The Mining Tax Act which,by changing the tax treatment of explora-tion expenses, would make explorationas attractive in years of low metal pricesas it is in boom times. It is our hope thatthis can be done without increasing taxallowances over the long term. Explora-tion activity in Ontario is vital, for theindustry and all those who benefit by it- which means each and every one ofus in this Province.

The following statement was issued byL. Edward Grubb, chairman and chiefofficer of International Nickel:

The Ministers comprehensivestatement on the Ontario mining industryrecognizes both the short and long termproblems which this industry faces, andstresses particularly the benefits ofmining to Northern Ontario. Hisannouncement regarding the deferral forfive years of the disallowance of foreignprocessing costs in the assessment ofmining taxes is welcome news during adifficult period for the nickel industry.Inco, of course, fully processes the greatbulk of its nickel production in Canadaand all of its copper production.

Until we have had an opportunity tostudy the amendments to the regulations,we are not in a position to comment onthe impact on Inco. Nevertheless, we areconfident that this development will be ofmeaningful benefit. Speaking generally,we believe it will contribute to thestability of the Ontario mining industryand of the communities which thatindustry supports.'

Happy Valentines Day

Most of us, when recalling our schooldays, remember with mixed emotionsthose annual occasions when the teacherfinally opened the big, gaily decoratedvalentines box that, for perhaps the weekprevious, had conspicuously graced aprominent nook in the classroom, silentlycompelling young boys and girls aliketo furtively deposit their often handmadevalentines.

Today, Valentine's Day is stillacknowledged with classroom exchangesbut as adults, we've turned to the moresophisticated practise of giving candies,flowers, and "storebought" valentines.

Our familiar Valentine's Day, borrowedfrom ancient Rome, had its foundation ona pagan festival of love, held on February15, and celebrated by Romans honouringthe wolf which had nursed Romulus andRemus, the twins who later founded thecity of Rome. Known as "Lupercalia"derived from " lupus", the Latin word for"wolf" -. part of the ceremony consistedof putting girls' names in a box andhaving the boys draw them out, thussupposedly pairing off couples for thenext year.

As far back as 496, Pope Gelasiuschanged "Lupercalia" on February 15, toSt. Valentine's Day on February 14,dedicated to the memory of an earlypriest of Rome who was tortured andbeheaded on February 14 in the year 270,during the persecution of Christians inthe reign of Emperor Claudis II.

I.O.R.P.Captures All-PlantsSafety Awardfor Fifth Time

Kirkwood takes mine laurels

For the fifth time in seven years, theIron Ore Recovery Plant has captured thecoveted all-plants safety award I Animpressive accomplishment that willprobably stand for a long time to comebefore being equalled.

The all-mines safety award was claimedby Kirkwood mine for the second time.Kirkwood last won the award back in1972, with Copper Cliff North minewinning it the next two years.

The two large trophies are awardedannually to the mine and plant with themost outstanding safety record for theyear. The all-mines trophy was firstawarded in 1961, while the all-plantstrophy made its appearance in 1969.

The awards are based on statisticscompiled over a twelve-month period,and the champions are determined by therelative standing of the mine or plant.The three determining factors are lost-time injury frequency, accident frequencyand accident severity, all per millionman - hours.

George Nowlan, manager of the l.O.R.P.,was very proud of his plant's achievement."Even though the award is for the wholeplant, we couldn't have won it withoutevery single employee thinking andpromoting safety every day," said George."We hope to have this trophy for a longtime to come."

Manager of the Garson-Kirkwood area,Paul Parker, was naturally very proud ofKirkwood's accomplishment. "We maybe a small mine, but it still took a greatdeal of effort on everyone's part to obtainour safety record," stated Paul.

Congratulations to the winners - let'ssee if we can make 1976 an even saferyear.

;A Schnauzer'best friend..

Registered as Hexenbraus Honey ', left, andRhapsody's Pretty Little Poppy", the two

Miniature Schnauzers are called "Honey' and"Poppy" for short.

Hexenbrau's Honey, Rhapsody's PrettyLittle Poppy, and Hi Buttons of GayMeadows. Sounds like a roll call at youraverage race track, right? Wrong! Thenames belong to three MiniatureSchnauzers who, in turn, belong to JohnKozlich, senior draftsman with Inco'smines exploration department in CopperCliff.

A couple of years ago, with healthproblems preventing physically strenuoushobbies, John ventured into the world ofdogs and breeding at the suggestion ofwife, Mickey, who felt having a dog wouldpromote exercise and help to pass theidle hours,

The search was on.

"I wanted something rare enough onthis continent to make ownership a matterof justifiable pride. After visiting manybreeders and assessing several breeds,I took to the Miniature Schnauzer. Littledid wife Mickey realize that she wouldend up being kennel labour, and I,management"

And thus the beginning of RhapsodyKennels Reg'd., located at the Kozlichhome on Claudia Court in Sudbury.

At time of writing, John and Mickeyhave six Schnauzers, their own threefemale adults, plus three of the sweetestlittle puppies you've ever seen!

About the breed itself . . . the MiniatureSchnauzer is of German origin and isderived from crossing small specimensof the Standard Schnauzer with theAffenpinscher. The Miniature wasexhibited as a distinct breed as early as1899, and resembles the StandardSchnauzer, varying somewhat in colour,and being, as a rule, less aggressive intemperament. Actually, what it is, is abig dog in a small frame. Size variesfrom 12 to 14 inches.

Although in German the word"Schnauzer" means "argumentative", thedog's name comes from the Germanword "Schnauzbart", which means"a bearded mouth".

The typical Miniature is hardy, active,intelligent, and fond of children. His sizemakes him ideal for town living, and hiscrisp, tangleresistant, nonshedding coatmakes him the housekeeper's delight.He's seldom addicted to wanderlust, andas a rule, is not a fighter, though he canstand up for himself when necessary.

admirably suited to fill this role underalmost any circumstances, since goodhealth, good temperament, and anattractive appearance combine to forma pleasing personality.

As a professional breeder, John haslearned that "it's impossible to assessthe breeding potential by appearancealone, just as it's impossible to judgebreeding value by pedigree alone". It'sgot to be a combination of the two.

'Some of our weekends are spent atvarious dog shows, either as spectatorsor as exhibitors, which keeps us in touchwith other breeders, and the public. Theserious breeder is anxious to competewith other entrants, in an attempt toimprove the breed. Many a dog looksexceptional at home, but only throughcomparison with worthy competition canone decide if he is truly outstanding.'Showing' gives the breeders a chanceto see one another's accomplishments,and helps to better evaluate their ownbreeding programmes. A truly great dog,kept at home, can never be of benefitto the breed".

"Dog showing or obedience trainingcan be very rewarding to those whoseactivity is restricted due to physicalreasons, affording plenty of action, butnot so strenuous as, perhaps, hockey ortennis".

John admits that he could certainlyexpand his "shop" by taking on otherbreeds, but feels he'd be defeating his

The sun was bright, the air crisp andeveryone's spirits were high as the firstannual Inca Loppet got underway. What'sa loppet? Well, the word "loppet" comesfrom the Norwegian language andtranslates roughly into "everyoneparticipates in a skiing outing." Which isexactly what happened.

About 150 hardy people in all agegroups braved the 40-below cold to travel

the fifteen-kilometer course. It startedand ended at the Suomi Ranta Hall, onthe shores of Long Lake, just south ofSudbury.

Unlike competitive racing, where theparticipants go all out to try and win, theloppet is more of a recreational event.It gives skiers a chance to see thecountryside and appreciate the silenceand beauty of our natural wilderness.But you are mistaken if you think cross-country skiing isn't strenuous! Accordingto experts, cross-country skiing is oneof the best all round exercises! You usethe muscles in all parts of your body!

The day started with a pancakebreakfast at 8:00 a.m. It was a welcomerepast for everyone at that time in themorning since it was minus 40 on theCelsius scale! Suffice to say, it was cold!After the usual kibitzing as to whattype of wax to use, most people couldbe seen applying their own 'secretblend."

Almost $9000awarded to94 employees!

It might be the dead of winter witheverything silent and frozen, but you'd neverknow it with all the activity and hot ideas inthis month's edition of the suggestion plan.Almost $9,000 were awarded to 94 OntarioDivision employees for their suggestedimprovements to safety and operations.

Albert Ouellet, Copper Cliff North mine,was again in first place and collected $3,930for devising a method to fabricate a strongerholding handle on the RB83 stoper.

Maurice Gratton, an employee withmaintenance construction, figured out away to add stop blocks to scooptram boomassemblies, and put a cheque for $1 ,1 20 inhis pocket.

At Crean Hill mine, Peter York andRonald Kelly put their heads together anddevised a method of setting marks whenrecapping drum hoists. They split $655.

Regent Castonguay, Levack mine,pocketed $275 for suggesting that a spacerbe used between a borehole casting and thepipe.

Murray Veno, Copper Cliff smelter, wasawarded $240 for proposing revisions to thelimit arm of the number two casting buildingcrane.

Louis Labelle, Levack mine, picked up$175 for his idea to enlarge the number twoSymons crusher discharge chute.

Also at Levack mine, Armand Brideaupocketed $165 for proposing modificationsto the back of shaft compartments tofacilitate easier rope changing.

Aurel Bourget, Copper Cliff North mine,suggested that air movers be fabricated.

Edward Pitton,Creighton mine, devised a method ofchanging bushings on scooptram bucketpins. At Garson mine, Gerard Sanchedesigned a safety stabihzer on At'as Copcomachines. Roger Walker, Creighton mine,picked up his money for suggesting that the6800 eve tugger hoist be relocated.

CLADDING THE

Nickel stainless steels great strength, rigid-ity and durable, pleasing appearance havemade it pre-eminent among architecturalmetals. These properties nowfindtheirhigh-est levels of expression in the worlds tallestfree-standing structure. The 1815-foot-highON Tower, now nearing completion onTorontos waterfront has been designed fora 300-year life. Prime architectural consid-erations in its construction have been theminimizing of maintenance requirementssince repair and replacement are very diffi-cult and costly in a structure of this type.

Stainless steel is extensively used, bothfor its good looks and for its proven ability toreduce the need for maintenance in manVhard-to-reach locations. Its most conspicu-ous application is as the exterior claddingfor the seven-storey Sky Pod at the 1100-

1200-foot lev& which contains indoor andoutdoor observation decks, a revolving res-taurant, TV and FM transmitting studios to-gether with microwave and mechanicalareas.

Long term fatigue resistance was adetermining factor in the choice of 18:8stainless steel since the curtain wall skin willbe subjected to considerable oscillationdue to air turbulence. says Edward Bard-win, Associated Project Architect. The roof-ing, floors and waRs for this building in thesky were produced and installed by Robert-son Building Systems Ltd. of Hamilton,Ontario, working as a major sub-contractorto Foundation Company of Canada Limited,the Manager Contractor for the project.

greater stresses than walls at or nearground level.

Testing conducted on a scale model ofthe tower in the Boundary Layer WindTunnel of the University of Western Ontarioindicated that the curtain wall would facewind pressures of up to 55 pounds persquare foot and wind suctions of up to 60pounds per square foot. The suction pres-sures occur around ^ of its circumference.

The high wind loads made the control ofairflow and the need for strength and rigidityof supreme importance. The higher suctionloads meant that all parts of the wall systemwould be stressed.

Robertson adapted standard buildingcomponents to meet these conditions anddeveloped a curtain wall combining highstrength and rigidity with the ability to resistpenetration by rain and the flow of heat, airand water vapour.

To clad the Sky Pod and elevator machinerooms, Robertson installed 30,000 squarefeet of stainless steel curtain wall backed upby special insulation and an inside galvan-ized steel liner sheet. These were attachedby specially-curved Z-bar spacers which, inturn, were fastened to the structural steel.

Air and water vapour flow are restrict-ed by galvanized steel liners, and 2-inchthick fibreglass insulation between innerand outer skins restricts heat flow by con-duction.

The curtain wall exterior consists of .036in. thick stainless steel sheet, roll-formed tothe Robertson V-beam profile with 1^ in.deep flutes, that provides the necessarystrength and rigidity. The sheets carry theattractive and durable Imperial finish devel-oped by Atlas Steels Company especiaflyfor architectural application, and first usedfor the cladding of the 57-storey CommerceCourt Bank Tower.

We chose the Imperial finish because it isnon-specular, says Mr. Baldwin. It pro-vides a pleasing reflection by day and atnight, when the Pod will be illuminated byfloodlights shining upwards from its lowerrim, we need a surface that will give a diffusereflection.

Structural testing of the exterior curtainwall covered static and dynamic loads aswell as air and moisture infiltration tests. Per-formance proved to be well within pre-scribed acceptable limits. A final staticpressure of 100 pounds per square footsuction load was applied to the wall to dem-onstrate a safety factor of 1.33 over designstress. No damage resulted from this struc-tural loading.

Additional design problems had to be.solved in producing the special sloped

louvers that enclose an air intake plena forthe broadcast transmission levels and coun-teract the effects of negative pressure.

The area to be covered took the form of acone, 108 feet in diameter at the top and 140feet at the base, necessitating the use oftapered panels to span the 28 foot distancebetween upper and lower circumferences.

Robertson produced and installed acladding assembly consisting of a total of383 pan and cap flashing sections fabri-cated from .048 in. thickness stainless steel.The cap sections are 4 ins, deep and con-tain 7/16 in. diameter holes along each webto provide a 15% free air flow. Stainless steelfasteners are used throughout the assemblyto join the sections together and to fastenthem to structural support members.

Robertson has also installed a teflon-coated gloss fibre fabric dacron radome toenclose the microwave area at the base ofthe pod. Stainless steel panels of .048 in.thickness with special louvered openingsfor air intakes are also installed here as asoffit system. They have been designed tohelp maintain a constant airflow to keep theradome inflated.

Significant use of stainless steel has beenmade in areas that Mr. Baldwin describes asimpossible to maintain." These include

floodlighting boxes that are built into theconcrete walls and the enclosures for the

window washing cable equalizer sheavesthat are set into concrete flooring.

One of stainless steels architectural attri-butes is a non-staining characteristic-nothing washes off its surface that can stainmaterials used at lower levels. This proper-ty, and the metals superior stiffness, haveresulted in its use at the very top of the towerfor the four lightning rods on the top of the335-foot antenna mast.

The rods were fabricated from 2 in. IPSpipe by Dominion Lightning Rod Co. Ltd. ofDundas (Ontario), and mounted on stainlesssteel pipe flanges that are bolted to theframework of the mast. As the photographshows, the lightning rods and associatedgrounding system are already on activeservice.

Designed to accomodate 96 cars on sx separate tracks, the thaw shed is used duringthe winter months to thaw ore and concentrtes which freezes in railway cars during theirtransit to Copper Cliff, and thawing is necessary to permit faster and more efficient dumping.Temperature in the shed is maintained at approximately 85° C. during thawing operations.Thawing time is determined by the length of time cars have been in transit and the severity ofthe temperature and wind conditions,

'I just do it for pleasure, says Hans, but ever since my sonHerman became interested, I don't have to go looking for a buddy." Hans is a member of theDolphine Aquatic Club, based in Sudbury, and also instructs a course in scuba diving at theFalconbridge radar base. How do you get a 12-ton Grangesberg orecar underground without slinging it underneath the cage? Nothing to it, as this photograph shows. Fitted with skids, this 300cubic foot unit was moved underground viathe Creighton number three shaft ramp. It isexpected that the first Grangesberg train,complete with twelve cars, will be in operation at Creighton mine later this year. A second train is planned at Creighton for the latter part of 1977. A total of 97 Grangesbergore cars are now on hand at all Sudbury areamining operations. The cars are in use with20 and 23-ton trolley locomotives.

Mention the word diamonds, and mostpeople will think of the sparkling white gemstones that are used in jewellery. Alas, this isnot the most common type of diamond Infact, for every gem quality stone there maybe thousands of small diamonds that lookmuch like coarse beach sand. These are in-dustrial diamonds. At Inco industrial dia-monds are used in drill bits for explorationand development diamond drilling. The dia-monds for all drill bits are purchased andgraded in the Copper Cliff bit shop byDorothy Bell and Birdie McHugh. Dorothy

is responsible for buying the diamonds fromdealers in North Bay, Toronto and New York,and they are weighed and sorted beforeshipment to Toronto, where they are set intobits. Dorothy and Birdie handle an average of2200 bits every month and ship them to Incoexploration crews all over the world. In 1975alone, over $72000 was spent on the pur-chase of diamonds, and that doesnt includethe cost of bits.After a diamond bit has wornout, it is sent back to Toronto, and the re-maining diamonds are removed and shippedto Copper Cliff where Dorothy and Birdie sortthe diamonds for size, quality and value. Imagine her surprise when she received a call on New Year's eve, telling her that shehad won $25,000! The last ship of the season to transit the Welland Ship Canal is spending the winter docked inPort Colborne. The 730-foot Canada Steamship Lines "Tadoussac" made her last run fromHamilton and is now at her berth at the R and P dock. This marks the official closing of theWelland Canal, although the bridges may yet see a few lifts in Port Colborne as wnter fleetvessels get nto position for the long layoff until April According to Seaway officials, transit inthe canal was up by 898 this year compared to 1 974. By the way. last year the canal closedthe latest in history, January 17.

Clearing snow from over 600 track switches within the Copper Cliff complex presents a majorhousekeeping problem for Inco's transportation department, In order to improve the effi-ciency of this cleaning operation, two motorized "Switchbrooms" are now in service to helpminimize the impact of snow storms on critical train movements. Main feature of the rotatingbroom is that the numerous sections of one-inch rubber hose are able to clear the snow frombetween the rails and movable switch points, down to the top of the railroad ties.

"Jock" Eadie, storeman at Creighton mine,is in the process of forming a pipe and kiltband in the Lively-Walden area. Known asthe "Walden Highianders' Jock's band hasalready recruited fifteen interested young-sters, and practice sessions are held twiceweekly at the Lively Legion Hall. Grants tooutfit the youngsters have been receivedfrom the Wintario Lottery, The Town of Wal-den, the Creighton-Lively Fish arid Game As-sociation, the Knights of Columbus, theLively Branch of the Canadian Legion andfrom interested local business establish-ments. We can sure use the money, saysJock, ' would you believe it takes $1 000 tooutfit a piper and over $800 for a drummer?All told, over $15,000 are required to com-pletely outfit the newly-formed band. We'vehad a large number of private donations,'comments Jock, "and the way things aregoing, we should be able to raise the re-quired amount."

International star of stage and screen, Yvonne DeCarlo was in Sudbury recently to play thelead in the Sudbury Theatre Centre's production of 'Dames at Sea." While in the city, shetook time out from her busy schedule to tour Inco facilities in the district. On her tour, she vis-ited Copper Cliff North mine, where she signed the visitors' book. North mine superintendentGrant Bertrim, left, maintenance mechanic Wally Emerson and general foreman DaleClarke watched as Yvonne penned her famous signature in above picture. Yvonne thentravelled to different levels of the mine and observed mechanized mining operations andequipment. "That underground trip was quite an experience' quipped Yvonne, "as a matterof fact, I wasn't aware of the scope of an underground operation.' She later visited Clarabellemill, the Copper Cliff smelter and the Copper Cliff copper refinery. At the copper refinery, be-low. Yvonne took a close look at a rack of copper anodes, while Bill Brown, administrativeassistant, explained how anodes are produced. "I'm really impressed with the wholeoperation,' said Yvonne, and I hope that I can return if I'm ever in this area again."

Touring the Port Colborne nickel refinery recently were members of the "Bollkubb' hockeyteam from Sweden, and refinery employee Bill Burgess was on hand to answer the manyquestions proposed by the youthful group. During their stay in Port Colborne, the Swedesplayed six exhibition games, including two against the Port Colborne team. They wound uptheir tour with a record of one win and five losses. Needless to say the visitors had a busyschedule, including trips to the locks at Thorold and to Niagara Falls, including lunch at theSkylon Tower. Highlight of the tour was a trip to Toronto to watch the Toronto Maple Leafsplay the Detroit Red Wings. Last year the Port Colborne team visited Sweden; this year theSwedish team completed the exchange.

Ray Huhtala, supervisor of equipment rent-als, proudly displays his "Certificate ofAchievement" which was given to him by anumber of his co-workers. "It's really anaward for standing up under pressure," saysRay, pointing out that the recent cold spellplayed havoc with rental equipment at Incoproperties. "Our phones were practicallyringing off the wall," he stated, "but, asusual, we managed to look after ourrequirements."

Installing new plug-ins at the Copper Cliffsmelter parking lot are electricians GlenGanton, in bucket, and Tom Signoretti.They're working out of an aerial basket truck,equipped with an hydraulic boom, capable ofreaching 40 to 45 feet above the ground.Inco's power department operates threetrucks similar to this one, two with single andone with a double basket. They're used tomaintain and install electrical cable through-out company property and are liable to beseen at any of the plants and mines in Sud-bury district.

Ian Gray, director of field exploration, left, and Will Lambo, supervisor of special studies,both from the Toronto office, do some global finger walking to illustrate the distance Incodelegates will have to travel for the third annual seminar of the corporate exploration group, tobe held February 16 to 19 in Sudbury. Present for the seminar will be regional managers andother key personnel from Inco's overseas exploration bases along with many field and minesexploration professionals from Inco's Canadian operations. According to Ian Gray, regionalmanagers will discuss factors that affect mineral resource development in their respectiveareas and also give an account of Inco's exploration activities in these areas. Staff fromToronto and Copper Cliff will discuss factors that help determine exploration objectives forspecific mineral targets. Following the seminar, overseas staff will visit an underground minein the Sudbury area and also a winter drill camp. Thereafter, regional managers and Torontostaff will refine regional exploration objectives and discuss management and administrativepractices and procedures in Toronto on February 23 and 24.

This 35-ton capacity Haulpak is discharginga load of rockfill into the 7-foot diameter raiseborer hole at the Copper Cliff South mine, Todate, nearly one million tons have beentransfered from the Clarabelle Open Pit intomined-out stoping areas at the South minesince commencement of the backfill pro-gram in late Spring, 1975.

Inco personnel are getting ready for the sec-ond annual Underground Operators Con-ference, to be held February 23 to 26 at Vald'Or, Quebec. George Johnston, centre,superintendent of industrial engineering,mines and mills, discusses one of the lncotechnical papers to be given at the con-ference with Gary Chlcquen, left, mine gen-eral foreman, Frood mine, and Wilt Roch-etort, mine general foreman, Creightonmine. Gary will present a paper on groundsupport, while Wilf's presentation will dealwith the introduction of electric load-haul-dump equipment at Inco. Claude Plette,divisional planner, Creighton mine, will alsoattend the conference and his talk will coverelectric-hydraulic drilling at Inco mines. Lastyear's Underground Conference was held inSudbury and drew over 300 delegates fromacross Canada and the United States, It washosted by the Sudbury Branch of the Cana-dian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Inco ranks were well represented during the recent 89th annual Northern Ontario curlingbonspiel when 128 competing rinks from across Northern Ontario played at the Coniston,Copper Cliff, Falconbridge, Idylwylde and Sudbury curling rinks. Logo Writer- Hector MacKinnonover 39 years of accident-free service

This month's logo, penned by HectorMacK irinon, is a tribute to 39½ years ofaccident-free service, certainly worthy ofspecial mention.

Hector, a stationary engineer at Garsonmine, joined the company in 1936 atFrood mine, and two years later trans-ferred to Garson mine, where he's beenever since. His entire career at Inco hasbeen totally accident-free . . . nodressings, no injuries, not a scratch, ever,in almost 40 years!

Always a safety-conscious man, Hector

attributes his record to not only "a lot ofluck" but also the constant care andawareness that go into such a fineachievement.

A Garsonite since 1942, Hector ismarried with two sons, John and Stewart,and a daughter, Mary Jane, WifeElizabeth's two brothers are both Incoites- John Len nie is at Frood mine, andDave Lennie retired two years ago asarea manager, Levack.

As well, Hector's four brothers are allwith Inco - John Albert's with security at

Con iston, Ken's at the Iron Ore RecoveryPlant, and Rod and Frank are both at thecopper refinery.

In addition, Hector's sister, AnnieMacKay's husband, Neil, is an Incopensioner, retired from Frood mine threeyears ago.

With no plans for retirement, Hector ishoping to celebrate 40 years with thecompany and 40 years without anaccident this coming June.

Congratulations, Hector!
