"Lets Get Acquainted"

When JACK & CAROL DECOSTE graduated from the very first NNJSDA sponsored Square Dance Class in Plainfield in 1959 they never dreamed they'd one day be head couple of the very same Association. Soon after graduation they followed the advice of an instructor who told the class to "Get out and dance and enjoy themselves at different clubs - but that they could also show their appreciation for this wonderful couple activity by giving of themselves at the various clubs they might join." This they took to heart by becoming presidents of the Pioneer Square Dancers (Bell Labs) in 1960 and later its delegates. Recognizing good leadership when they saw it, the Plainfield Promenaders pressed Jack and Carol into serving their club - first as presidents in 62 and the following year as its delegates. After a year as treasurers in the Metuchen Square Dance Club, they were asked to become vice-presidents of the NNJSDA. Here they served for two years as Chairman of the Beginners Classes (a job they were well suited for) before taking over the helm this past June as our 8th Presidents.

ISLE SQUARES -- Oakwood, Staten Island, N.Y. 2 & 4 Wednesdays Oakwood Heights Church Hall, 345 Guyon Ave.

Our Season Roundup was a huge success....a buffet supper with lots of excellent food and 13 squares to help see that most of the food was eaten. Glenn Cooke called a terrific dance as always, winding up the season and leaving us in a happy frame of mind. It will indeed be difficult to equal or surpass the job done by the Cliffords, Duncans, Olives, Cofanos and Babs Stephenson. Our third dance of the new season, Oct. 11, will be our "Mission- ary dance" and we hope all members will attend with any couples interested in joining our classes this year. Hope to see all of you at our dances.

We enjoyed having you dance with us through the summer. Jim Flamer made us forget the heat in the enjoyment of dancing. Our thanks also to Bruce Vertun and Jim Marshall who called during Jim's vacation...and to all who came and danced. The annual picnic was a grand day - between swimming, eating, dancing, boating and egg tossing everyone was entertained. We were all deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Al- fretta Jones in mid August. We had looked forward to having both Mort and Alfretta as our Head Couple this year. Our new officers were installed in June at our annual dinner dance at the Spring Rock Country Club with Al Brundage calling. Our drawing for the Jug End Weekend went to Victor Haubner. Summer dancing at the Hullabaloo was enjoyed by many...those lights sure made things whiter than white.

We were all shocked and deeply saddener by the death of Kay Wallin in an automobile accident in August. Kay & Axel were past-presidents and although they'd moved to Long Island were frequent visitors at Hi Taw dances. We will all miss her.

Starting on Sept. 12 we are back to our regular schedule with Hal Holmes first Tuesdays, Beulah Samec second, Dick Jones 3rd Tuesdays (Not Nov. 21), Al Brundage 4th Wed. and 5th Tuesdays guest callers. Should be a real swinging year! Come join us for the fun!!! Cedar Hill School Gym

A backward glance reminds us that in May we held a testimonial dance for newly elected presidents of NNJSDA, Jack & Carol DeCoste. We were pleased that so many of our friends joined with us in making this a very- special occasion. A most delicious covered dish supper was enjoyed on May 23, at which time our new officers were installed. The Bernardsville Woman's Club also visited us and participated in some of the dancing.

12 couples pinned the Bell Labs banner in July. A delegation attended the National and had a superb time. Their tales of dancing almost around the clock have all the rest of us feeling we missed something great.

For our Beginners Class info' see page 7. Now looking ahead, we invite all of you to come dance with us whenever you are able. We are antici-pating particularly a special dance Oct. 24 with national caller Bob Yerington from Iowa at the mike. Hope you'll note the date and our ad.

HILL CITY SQUARES -- Summit, N.J. 1,3,4 Thursdays Wilson School, Beekman Terrace

Starting Sept. 21 we'll dance 1,3,4, Thursdays except Thanksgiving and only on Dec. 7. We're really looking forward to the coming season with Manny Amor as our regular caller and extend an invitation to all to help enjoy his fun calling. Special dances will be held Nov.30 and Feb. 29 with our old friend, Jim Cargill. As "Big Daddy's" many followers know, dates with him are worth putting down in advance to make sure they aren't missed.

Yes we will have a Beginners Class - see page 7. It is with deep regret that we (particularly the old timers) note the passing of our neighboring square dance club, the Bell Labs Squares. The Memories of good times en-joyed at the Bell Labs since it's start in 1951 will linger on for many years. reporters - Jamie & Louise Jamison 635-5086

METUCHEN SQUARE DANCE CLUB -- Metuchen, N.J. 1 & 3 Saturdays Moss School, Simpson St.

Visitors are always welcome and warmly received, presidents - Frank & Hazel Preston VA6-3884

GARDEN STATE SQUARE DANCE CAMPERS

Our most ambitious project, Camporee '67, saw over 90 camping families, from all parts of the U.S., Florida, California, Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa as well as locally, at Lebanon State Forest for the June 23 to July 2 week plus. Campers stayed for all or part of the time attending the Camporee and later the National. National S/D Camper presidents Herb & Tilda John-son came from Wisconsin. Herb, being a caller, was put to work with club callers Shoffner, Winter and Rismiller. Ken Johnson, also from Wis. also helped keep 20 plus squares going at our Saturday night Jamboree. Others who pitched in were Dick Bechtel and Art Seele from Pa. and Irwin Dorfmann from N.Y. The round dancing was most competently and interestingly pre-sented by the Longs and Tirrells. All in all the club's first effort at national hosting was quite a success - but only because so many of the mem-bers worked for months to get the sampsite, equip it with tent, showers, lights, etc., and take care of all the myriad other details that had to be done. The rest of the summer activities included a weekend at Cedar Ridge Camp near Liberty, N.Y. made notable by lots of rain and a 4 AM "Dawn Dance", a longer trip to Brandywine Meadows on-the edge of the Penna. Dutch country, a Round Dance weekend at We-Got-Um and our finale at PinebrookCarnp, North Branch, N.Y. which was highlighted by a camper cookout with the club fur- nishing hamburgers, corn and watermelon. Folk dancing had quite a boost this summer due to the fine teaching abilities of Jerry & Sarah Oelberg, we were able to schedule a F/D workshop every campout.

RAMAPO SQUARES -- Oakland, N.J. 2 & 4 Saturdays Heights School, Seminole Avenue

To touch on only the highlights of another busy S/D Summer...Our June picnic was held at Ringwood State Park where we squared up in the old barn. This led to an invitation to again dance at the Barn in August as part of a conference of N.J. State officials who visited Ringwood that day on an in-spection tour. Our afternoon of S & R dancing was followed by supper at Shepherd's Lake. At a meeting of our Executive Committee held at the sum-mer home of our Chiefs Bill & Rath Buhler some fine plans for our coming season were lined up. Surprising what good water skiers some of these square dancers are!

Several new features have been added to our 2 & 4 dances. Round Dance enthusiasts will be happy to know that for a half hour, 8-8:30, before each dance Doc & Peg Tirrell will teach rounds including the ROM. Another "new" is that "coffee and" will be served in the school cafeteria after the dance. Our new callers, Beulah Samec and Lee Kopman, will coordinate efforts in their alternating sessions to give us a consistently fine dance program throughout the season.

Don't forget to circle November 11th - Veterans Day - on your calendar. Big Daddy Jim Cargill will call this special benefit dance. Proceeds to be donated to the USO by RAMAPO. Reporter - Vi Clapp 337-7578

In the Fall, a square-dancer's fancy turns to -- where else? -- a square dance! A cordial welcome is extended to all who dance for pleasure to be with us on lucky Friday, October 13, for our first dance of the new season. As usual, Jim Flamer will be at the mike at 8:30 PM to lead us through an evening of pleasure. And don't forget, every dance is followed by free coffee and buns. You don't have to be expert to enjoy yourself at a Tena-fly Squares' dance. Why not resolve to be with us this year?

TENAKILL TWIRLERS -- Cresskill, N.J. 3rd Friday Bryan School, Brookside Ave.

During the summer many of our members travelled far and wide including a 7800 jaunt by prexys Lyle & Edna Hopper, but most were home and ready to square up at the first dance Sept. 15. Even before that, the Triple T's made their final trip to the Paramus Cloverleafs - 30 couples have earned their TTT badges and had a lot of fun in the process. Her many friends have been delighted to see Alice Fulmer dancing again, fully recovered from her eye surgery.

In these days of higher prices we feel Tenakill is unique in offering all who pay the $12 membership fee the privilege of either joining our beginners claSs or square dancing every 3rd Friday to Chip Hendrickson Sept. - June, attending folk dance workshops under the Brombergs 2nd Wed, coming to the Round Dance class conducted by the Tirrells 3rd Mondays and/ or joining in any workshops by the Brombergs or FulmeTs!!! See you in Cresskill. reporter - Dorothy Pullman 568-5138

SHONGUM MOUNTAINEERS -- Morris Plains, N.J. every Tuesday County Buildings 6:30 to 8 PM Teen-age Club

Business as usual - we danced all summer! High spots have been our publicity booth at the Morris County Fair and our first award in the 4H State Square Dance contest at Flemington Fair. We're planning a big teen dance at Randolph Elementary School, Mt. Freedom on the 23 of Sept. with Ken Casazza calling. Every teen dancer in the state is invited.

The idea of a club uniform is catching on. The girls are making them-selves check gingham dresses with matching hair bands and are giving their partners matching bow ties. The boys wear white shirts and black pants. Looks real sharp! For our Beginners Class see page 7. president - Russ Deats III JU4-5404; Reporter Ed Knight 895-2559
