-1962

The Second Annual Homecoming of Culver High School was held Friday, November 29, in the gym in conjunction with the Culver-Bremen basketball game. Between the B-Team and Varsity games, the candidates for Homecoming Queen, selected by their respective classes, were introduced. They mounted the stairs to the stage passing through the honor guard formed by both Varsity teams.

The Queen was still unknown, as she is selected in secret by the Varsity team. W ith the announcem ent of the Q ueen’s name, her escort placed the crown upon the head of Freshman Marilee H errm ann and presented her with a bouquet of white baby roses. The Queen and her court remained on stage during the first half of the Bremen-Culver game and reigned over the after-game dance.

Queen Marilee poses happily in her green satin formal.

The Indians made Homecoming a complete success by winning the Bremen-Culver game!

The four candidates look lovely as they pose in their evening dresses.

VJustiy BasebcJHThe Indians became M arshall County Champs for the second year in a row. Ten out of eleven teams bowed to the mighty bats of the defending County Champs.

Culver started the season with a 5— 0 victory over the Aubbee Braves. Sam Lowry hurled a no-hitter and was helped on offense by Paul W hite’s two hits.

In the second game the Indians staged a sixth-inning rally to beat N orth Caston 9—4. Lowry again was the winning pitcher, while Carter led the offense with 3 hits.

Lapaz was the first county team to fall before the Indians. In the 7— 2 battle, Paul Liette was the winning pitcher.

Tyner fell to the Culver team 10— 0 in the Indian’s second county game. Lowry was the winning pitcher and smacked two home runs for his own cause.

The Indians journeyed to N orth Caston to win their fifth game by a score of 11— 5. Lowry, in relief for Liette, was credited with the win while Jim Lewis collected three hits to aid the Culver team.

Culver’s only loss was at the hands of the Lapaz Vikings. In the 1— 0 contest, Liette got two hits to lead the weak attack, while Lowry received the loss.

T he Indians, still determined to win the champion-

ship, downed Tyner 4— 0. Lewis was the winning pitcher, while Jim Boswell swatted 3 hits.

West lost to the Culver nine, 9— 1 as Lowry pitched another fine game. Although no Culver batter got more than one hit, the Indians monopolized on many walks.

Culver defeated South Caston 12— 5 to capture its eighth win of the season. Lewis was the winning pitcher and he was backed by a well balanced Culver offense.

West fell to the Indians for the second time by a score of 12— 2. Lowry obtained the pitching honors while Jim Boswell got 4 hits to lead the team to victory.

Culver and Lapaz tied for the title of Marshall County Champs; both had a record of 5 wins and 1 loss. In the hard fought play-off game, the Indians staged a last-inning rally of 5 runs to beat the V ikings 9— 5. Lowry went the distance on the mound while collecting 3 hits to lead the team to the cham pionship.

Lowry was voted “Most Valuable Player” by his team members for the fabulous job he did during the season.

Oto&-CouttiujAs the students were returning to Culver High last fall, the cross-country team was already in the process of conditioning themselves for the hard season in front of them. T heir practices m eant m uch hard work and running many miles. There were three lettermen returning to the squad this year. These were Tom Yocom, George W right, and Doug Lindvall.

This year the team split the number of victories and losses evenly with a total of five each way. Culver’s participation in the county cross-country meet ended by receiving third place, scoring behind Triton and Bremen. We had three consistent runners on the team as in all meets; the finishing order was Tom Yocom in first place, George W right in second, and Paul H atten finishing third for the Culver line-up.

This year major letter awards were presented to Tom Yocom, George, Wright, Phil Scruggs, Ned Davis, Ron Babcock, Doug Lindvall, and Danny Haenes. PtOuA ofy Owt/TkCtJiwlWith two games remaining on a tough schedule, the hot-shooting Indians boasted a record of 15 victories as oppossed to only 5 losses. Five of last year’s lettermen returned to the Culver roster this year. These are Paul White, Ned Davis,, Sam Lowry, Jim Boswell, and Dave Lemar.

The Tribe journeyed to Aubbee for the first win of many. In a 77—63 contest, Sam Lowry hit 24 points to begin a high scoring season. Bob Eustis, a recruit from Valparaiso High School, added 15 points to the Culver offense.

South Central proved a worthy foe by downing the Indians, 69—50. The Indians, who played good ball for three quarters, lost pace to the hot-handed Rosenbaum who tallied 36 points to lead the hosts. Sam Lowry scored the 17 points to lead Culver’s slow offense.

With reserves playing half the game, the Tribe still doubled Tyner’s offense, 62—31. Jumping to a 34— 13 half-time lead, host Tyner became the second victim of Culver’s highly improved team. Sam Lowry and Jim Boswell led the well balanced attack with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

In the first home game of the season, Culver avenged last year’s sectional loss to Plymouth by easily gliding past the Pilgrims, 68—58. Lowry, again the leading scorer with 19 points, was aided by Eustis and Lindvall having 13 and 10 points apiece.

Culver earned their second home victory by beating Bremen, 69—52. Roeder’s 19 points for the foes were counterbalanced by Lowry’s 20 markers. Paul White and Jim Boswell each contributed 10 points.

A tragic blow was given to the Indians as they journeyed to Knox and received an overtime loss. The final score was a deceiving 74—68. Sam Lowry’s 18 points were surpassed only by the 22 points credited to Knox’s Buckey. Eustis and White added 15 and 14 points respectively to the well-fought attempt.

The following night, the Indians played host to the North Judson Blue Jays. In a close contest, the Tribe nipped the Blue Jays by 3 points, 60—57. High game scorers were Sam Lowry, with 17 points, followed by Jim Boswell with 14 points. This was Culver’s fifth win.

Highly rated North Caston traveled to Culver only to be beaten, 74— 73. Ned Davis got 17 points in the final period to make a spectacular ending to an exciting game. Davis got a total 20 points but Sam Lowry again overscored all his teammates with 25 points.

With Sam Lowry blazing the home nets with 36 points, the Culver team was able to keep a lead over Rochester throughout the entire game. At the game, the scoreboard showed Culver’s winning score as 69—61. Lowry’s spectacular shooting performance was aided by Ned Davis’s 11 points.

Walkerton fell to the visiting Indians, 81—62. Although

Culver’s offense was evenly distributed, Paul White was awarded shooting honors with 18 points. Ned Davis, Sam Lowry, Dave Lemar, Bob Eustis, and Jim Boswell added 14, 13, 12, 11, and 11, respectively.

During the Christmas holidays, a four-way tourney was held at Argos with Argos, Mentone, Triton, and Culver participating. The first evening’s action saw Mentone beat Triton and Culver beat Argos. In the 64—55 tilt, Sam Lowry and Paul White scored 17 and 13 points each to clear the path to the championship match. Tension mounted as Triton beat Argos in the consolation game Saturday night. Although Doc Fod predicted the Indians to fall before Mentone, the Indians proved themselves worthy to be the first winner of the Argos invitational tourney. Lowry again lead all scorers in the 68—57 battle by getting 29 points.

With Culver defending a winning streak, the crowd packed Plymouth’s Cenntenial Gym to see LaPaz fall as Culver’s 7th straight victim. Lowry, Davis, and White scored a total of 55 points in the 70—60 tilt, with Lowry getting 23, and Davis and White getting 16 points apiece.

Triton came close to being the only county school to beat Culver thus far this year, but in furious fourth quarter, Culver managed a 61—60 victory. In the nip and tuck battle, Lowry donated 22 points to the worthy cause.

For the second time this season, Culver saw fit to stomp Argos into the Dragon’s home floor. The final totals were 54 for Argos and 78 for the Tribe. Donating to the score, Lowry, Lemar, White, and Boswell gave 21, 13, 12, and 12, respectively.

New Paris came to the reservation looking for a win but went home dissappointed. The Indians became the second team this year to beat the Elkart County Champs by scalping them 69—63.

The Indians went to Pioneer Regional to receive their third loss of the year, 58—50. Lowry led the attack with 15 points. Boswell and Lemar followed with 10 points and 8 points respectively.

Winamac journeyed to Culver to hand the Indians their final loss on the home court. As the whistle blew, the final score was 80—65. Boswell led all scorers with 21 , points. Lemar and White also got into the scoring with 14 points and 10 points.

With the important part of a tough schedule ahead, Coach Crosley and his Indians deserve congratulations for boasting a 15—5 record. At one point in the season, the team held a ten-game winning streak.

Coach Bottorff’s Papooses possessed an even record by getting 9 wins and 9 losses. This proves Culver’s potential ability in future years will be great. Hopes are high for the remaining part of this season and for many seasons to come.

NOT AT THE TOP, BUT CLIMBINGIn the fall of 1960 we began the ascent. Leading us that academic year were our class of

ficers: Bob Carter, president; Ned Davis, vice president; Betty Everett, secretary; and Martha McAllister, treasurer. Our representatives on the Student Council were Martha McAllister and Paul White. As “Freshies” we had only one project, selling fudge. In order to save our funds, we did not have a class party. Truly our treasury was not overflowing, but we were still climbing.

The following year, as we continued our upward journey, our class officers were Sam Lowry, president; Janet Beck, vice president; Betty Everett, secretary; and Lucy Osborn, treasurer. Susie Gardner and Paul White were elected to the Student Council. Now that we were Sophomores our activities broadened. Although we continued to sell fudge, we also fattened our purse by raking leaves in the community. Later in the year we sponsored a doublefeatured movie. We were so successful that we were soon able to purchase a bond and let our money make money for us. As we traveled even higher, we felt that we had been extremely “Wise Fools” (Sophomores).

We scrambled with more enthusiasm now, for as we craned our necks to look up, we could see a peak in the distance. In front of our class were our officers, Paul White, president; Bob Carter, vice president; Janet Beck, secretary; Ann Wagoner, treasurer. Pam Phelps and Bob Carter represented us on the Student Council. Becoming a little anxious to be on our way, we chose the class play “Jump Over the Moon Although financially the play didn’t split the seams of our purse, theatrically it was a success. At the season’s first basketball pep rally, we Juniors’ ingenious construction of the “Culverizer” won us the traveling silver loving-cup for the best display. Even with all of these honors, we were forced to turn our minds once again to money matters. Our next project was sponsoring dances after the home basketball games. We felt ourselves rising in prestige as we topped the financial goal set by all the previous classes. Day by day we became more impatient until our class rings finally arrived; now we could prove that we were really Juniors. In the spring, grateful for the day off, our U.S. History class thoroughly enjoyed an educational day at our state capitol. When March rolled around and “Porky Pig” seemed just the right size, we went into the restaurant business for a day to serve the Junior Ham Supper. Porky surely tasted good. At the end of the basketball season, we sponsored a giant record hop which was directed by disc-jockey Jack Myers. Now that our bank roll had reached considerable size, we honored the Class of 1963* with a prom. We spent the entire day decorating the gym to fit the mood of our theme, “Misty.” As we danced around the floor that night, we realized that we were now only one step from our goal.

We felt as if we were on top of the world; we were Seniors at last. Inasmuch as we were no longer the followers but the leaders, our class officers stood foremost in the school. They were Paul White, president; Sam Lowry, vice president; Janet Beck, secretary; and Ann Wagoner, treasurer. On the Student Council were Martha McAllister and Sam Lowry. In retrospect our class chose the motto, “It matters not how long we live, but how.” For our class flower we selected the white rose to enhance our class colors, midnight blue and silver. To start the year out right, we sold over $4,400 worth of magazines which surpassed our goal by almost $1,000. Determined not to lose the traveling loving-cup, we won again by displaying a replica of the Wright brothers’ first plane to encourage our basketball team to “Fly Wright to Victory.” This marked the start of the basketball season during which we sold concessions at all the home games. For the first time a senior class was allowed to present a play, so everyone worked hard to make Clementine a great success. On March 22, we finally departed on our hard-earned senior trip to Washington, Williamsburg, and New York City. On the morning of the sixth day, tired but happy, we arrived home with many exciting experiences to relate. Our next expectation was the prom. This year we were the honored guests of the Class of 1965. As we danced around the floor of the beautifully decorated gym, we noted that before long our parents and guests would be seated on this same floor to watch us graduate. While we attempted to savor every second, time flew past. On May 29 as we were called forth to receive our diplomas, we finally realized that, although we were at the peak of our adolescent life, we had experienced only a small portion of the magnificent mount that lay before us. We had struggled together to secure this point, but from here we would travel our separate paths to scale the mountain of tomorrows.

We, the members of the Class of 1964, wish to express our heart-felt appreciation to our parents, the faculty of Culver High School, and our many friends in the community for their advice, encouragement, and confidence during the past four years.
