Matt MannCoach of Swimming
by way of Ga!:tder, London, Hamburg,Amsterdam, Oslo and Copenhagen. July11 at 4:30 pm we were met at the air-port and escorted to the Olympic Vil-lage, which was to be our headquartersduring the time of the contests. Wewere assigned quarters and soon retiredin order to be ready for our practice ses-sions which were about to begin. Thefollowing day we assembled with theentire US Olympic Team to be officiallywelcomed by the Finnish OrganizingCommittee.
Our practice sessions began July 13,and ranged from 5:00 am to 8:30 pm,being held twice daily according to thetime allotted to our team. It was not un-common to have from three to six na-tions practicing in the pool at the sametime; and it was most interesting andinstructive to observe the different stylesof swimming, and hear the commentsduring these practice periods.

The weather for the first few days ofpractice was cold and rainy, but thewater was heated. The dressing roomswere neat and well taken care of (bywomen attendants, much to the embar-rassment of our boys).
The competition was keen and thefield large and varied. Each event re-quired heats, semi-finals, and finals. Insome of the events there were as manyas 45 nations entered. We raced at 8:30in the morning and again at 8:00 thatsame evening. We had a splendid groupof boys, cooperative and eager and able,as the results showed.
Every Olympic record was shatteredduring the progress of the meet. TheUS team won six out of eight swimmingand diving events and lost the other twoby a whisker. France, with contestantsin everyone of the final swimmingevents, was always a threat. Japan quali-fied many men but failed to win anygold medals for the first time in years.Hungary, South Africa, Australia, Eng-land, Russia, Czechoslovakia and Brazil(a newcomer) all showed capable per-formers and reached the finals.
There isn't any doubt that the mostthrilling final on the program was the800-meters relay in which our four boys-Moore, Woolsey, Konno, and Mc-Lane--di,d a tremendous job of beatinga crack Japanese team which had beenpreparing for this race for many years.I congratulate these boys, all of them.
The Finns d,id a great job of organiz-ing this big affair, and it was BIG! Thefacilities were excellent. The pool wasfifty meters long with separate divingfacilities, and the surroundings werebeautifully landscaped with comfortableseating arrangements. The people of
Michael PeppeCoach of Diving
Helsinki were polite, friendly, and smil-ing. They seemed especially fond of ourAmerican boys.
The foreign swimmers are gainingfast. Their facilities are improving con-sistently and the interest is increasingrapidly. It is not just one nation likeJapan to whom we must look for ourkeen competition. We must now takecognizance of growing strength in allthe Scandinavian countries, as well asEngland, France, Australia, South Afri-ca, Italy, Russia, Brazil and elsewhere.
The US Olympic Committee is to becommended for their excellent job ofassembling, transporting, feeding, andhousing this great team. All of thecoaching and managerial personnel areindeed grateful to our competitors fortheir splendid spirit and marvelous per-formances. These athletes did a greatdeal to overcome the feeling of animos-ity often felt toward our countrymen.

A great deal of credit must be givento T. Nelson Metcalf, AdministrationChairman, Jim Simms of the Transpor-tation Committee, Charles Ornstein ofthe Food and Housing Committee, andall other committeemen who were in-strumental in adding to the comfort ofthe members.
The Finnish people were most coop-erative and were always ready and will-ling to do anything for us. We werehoused in the Nurses' Home, which is alarge modern elevator-serviced building. Its spacious auditorium was used severaltimes weekly to show very fine moviesto the competitors.
