    CHAPTER I

    INTRODUCTION

    1.1 BACKGROUNDEducation market is now thriving on the back of theworkforce proving itself equal to their

    counterpartselsewhereintheworldin productivity. Giventhe predominantlyyoung population,

    theeducation marketis boundtoacceleraterapidly. The muchsoughtafterIndianworkforcethat

    has propelled India to the top of several global competitive indices is not only attracting

    prospectiveemployerstothecountry butalsotheeducationsystem behindthisworkforceisnow

    driving a prolific education market. It seems to be a boom time for the education industry in

    India as the concept of business through education catches up with the Indian market. And

    management stream seems to the most popular flavorofeducation for thegraduates in India.

    MBA educationhasgainedenough momentum inthe pastdecadeandfollowingfacts provethis

    point

    No of MBA colleges: Morethan 100 reputedcolleges

    Total seats available: More than 70,000 seats in both CAT & MAT and other

    competitiveexams.

    No of candidates sitting for various MBA entrance examination

    -Intheyear1998-50000

    -Intheyear2010-290000

    Thissharp spurtinthegrowthofMBA collegeshasareason. Therearealotofadvantagestoan

    MBA graduate- salarywise and growthwise. On one hand there is little scope of research

    projects in various post graduate courses, full with rot learning, while on the other hand a

    managementeducationenablesto provide many practicalaspectsofthe business. Thesecourses

    provide students a good business sense that helps them to provide a strategic direction to a

    business and sometimes cultivate the spirit of entrepreneurship among them. All in all

    managementcourses provideaholisticapproachin planningandexecutingstrategies. Weoften

    comeacrossvarioussuccessstoriesof the studentsafterdoing MBA, IIM getters beingat the

    limelightin mediaastheycompletetheircoursesandgethandsome packages. Livingstandards,

    socialesteem, betteremploymentavenues, multiplefunctionalroleswhicharenot possible ina

    technicalcourseadds furtherglamour toa post MBA life. All these reasonscorrespond fora

    fiercecompetitionamongst students tograb a seat inoneof thegood business schoolsof the

    country. And manyeducationalsocietiesare leveraging thisopportunity by introducingat least

    one B- School in the listofcollegesrun by them. Thus thecolleges providingadegree in the

    fieldofbusiness managementarealso mushroomingwithafast pace.

    Butthefirststep towardssuccessforanyaspiring managerstartsfrom preparationstocrackthe

    entranceexaminationstoreachup tothedream MBA College. Sincetherearecurrentlyalotof

    playersinthe market providingthese preparations/trainingservices,studentsareoftenconfused,

    wheretogo. Thecurrent projectisaimedatstudyingallthe parametersoftheservices provided

    tothestudentsandanalyzing the factorsresponsible forgood performanceof the institute ina

    particularlocality.

    1.2SCOPE OF THE PROJECTAsthegrowthincolleges providingadiploma/degreein managementaswellasinthenumberof

    studentsapplyingforthesecourseshas beentremendousinthe pastdecade,thereisacutthroat

    competition for the seats in the elite institutions in the country. Further the awareness spread

    through various media sources such as news channels, internet, and counseling sessions etc.

    result infuellingadesiretocracktheentranceexaminationsforthese prestigiouscolleges, ina

    runtogeta betterlife. Thisresultsin providingafurtherboosttothenumberoftrainers,aswell

    as the already increasing number of students. These different players have various kinds of

    offeringsforthestudentsinreferencetothecourses. They providethestudentsawidevarietyof

    coursestochoosefrom rangingfrom durationofaround 18 monthstoassmallas 4 months. The

    brand image foreachof the playersdiffers indifferentregionsof thecountryand it makes the

    decision morecomplicated;whichonetojoin? Asaresultstudentsareoftenconfusedwhereto

    goand mostofthetimes basetheirdecisiononfactorssuchasconvenience, presenceoffriends,

    recommendations by relatives etc. This project is undertakenwith an intention to study the

    various parameters of service delivery in the Jammu region and to collect feed back of the

    studentswith a particular reference to Career Launcher, Jammu center. This may provide the

    researcheran ideaaboutwhat isexpected by thestudentsorwhat is promised to them before

    takingadmissionsandwhatreally isdeliveredaftertheyhaveenrolled. Thestudy may provide

    someguidancetothestudentsto basetheirdecisionofenrollmentand mayalso proveasaneye

    openerforCareerLauncherJammutoimproveormodifytheirservicedelivery.

    1.3 INTRODUCTION OF CLIENTCareer Launcher India Limited (CL) isaneducationservice providerinAsiawith presencein

    over 130 locations across India, Middle East and the United States. CL provides test-prep

    educationtoenableschoolandcollegestudentsgainadmissionto professionalcourses. Itisalso

    actively involved in the fieldofmainstream education, mainly through itsgrowingnetworkof

    play schools and secondary schools. Ananda, CL's playschools, and 'Indus World School', its

    K12 schools,are CL'sextension into mainstream educationalongwith business school 'Indus

    World SchoolofBusiness'. Skill School,is CareerLauncher'sventureintoformalvocationaland

    skilleducation,thataimsatemployabilityenhancementofthe Indianworkforce.

    The company also runs a publication unitwhich takes care of two magazines. Management

    Compassisaimedatundergraduatestudents,aspiringtoenterthecorporateworld by makingit

    toa B-schoolofrepute. Educareaimedatstudentsofclasses VIII to XII. Itclaimsto behighly

    beneficial forclearingconfusionaboutwhatstream tochooseafterclass X orwhatsubjects to

    choose in college. The company also provides career advisory services through its product

    Future map,acareerguidance program whichhelpsstudentsofStd. IX to XII chooseacareer

    bestsuitedforthem onthe basisoftheiraptitude, personalityandinterest.

    The major competitors of Cl are T.I.M.E, IMS, and BULLS EYE etc. The Test Preparation

    division providesguidanceandtest-prep services toschoolstudentsaswellasstudents leaving

    collegeandaspiringtotakeup graduate professionalcoursesin Indiaorabroad.

    i. To find out expectations of students preparing for MBA entranceexaminations in terms of academics, infrastructure and support

    servicesand prices provided bythe Institute.

    ii. Tofindoutthe perceptionofstudentsforCareerLauncherasa brandin Jammu.

    iii. Tofindoutactualdeliveryofservices by CareerLauncherin Jammu.iv. Tocompare thedeliveryofservicesamongothersimilar Institutes in

    Jammuwith CareerLauncherJammucenter.

    Certain studentswere contacted before the commencement of the research project about their

    problemsintakingadecision.

    1.6DATA COLLECTION DESIGNTypeof survey: Mall Intercept survey respective colleges/Schools/Institutes in Jammuwere

    visited to collect the information about the project. The Mall Intercept survey was chosen

    becauseofthefollowingreasons:

    High flexibility of data collection: Theinvestigatorhadtointeractwiththerespondents present

    at,sothatthequestionnairecan beadministeredwithoutanycomplexityofdifficulty

    Diversity of questions: there was moderate variety of questions to be asked from the

    respondents.

    Sample control: mall intercept survey was helpful to reach the specified units/respondents

    effectivelyandefficiently.

    Quantity of data: A high amount of data was required regarding expectations and actual

    deliveryofservices.

    beenenrolledinanyinstitute.

    For this project, the target population is undergraduate students studying different courses in

    variouscollegesin Jammucity.

    Nodatabaseorsampling framewas present before thecommencementof the project. Thus the

    researcheswouldcreateadatabasehimselfduringthecourseofproject.

    Sampling unit

    Variouscolleges in Jammu Cityanddifferent institutes providingcoaching forMBA entrance

    examinations.

    Sampling element

    The individuals who would give appropriate responses to the questionnaire would be the

    sampling element. In this project the responseswere taken from studentswho are currently

    enrolledina particularinstituteaswellthosewhoareseriousaspirantsforMBA courseandare

    willingtojoinanyoneoftheexisting playersin Jammu.

    Sampling Technique

    Nosamplingtechniquewasusedforobtainingthedetailsofthe projectsin CL. Itwasactuallya

    censussurvey.

    Sample Size Samplesizerefers totheno.ofsamplingunits to be included in thestudy. For

    this projectthesamplesizewas 93.

    Study material:-STUDENTS PERCEPTION ON VARIOUS PARAMETERS:

    Outoftotalsampleof93 studentsthesurveyresultsstatethataround 11% ofthetotalnumberof

    students isveryconfidentonthestudy material provided by CL toallstudents. Maximum (62)

    studentsareconfidentand believethatthestudy material issufficient.However15% areofthe

    opinionthatstudy materialisnottheonlyimportantfactorforsuccessinentranceexaminations

    andtheydonotdifferentiate between CLsstudymaterialandthatofothersimilarinstitutes.

    6% ofthetotalnumberofstudents believesthat CL materialisnotenoughto prepareforMBA

    EntranceExaminationsandtheydofeeltheneedforexternal material. A verysmallfractionof

    students (1%) stronglydisagree that CL material is notenough to prepare from and theywill

    definitelygoforsomeotherexternal material.

    Outoftotalsampleof93 studentsthesurveyresultsstatethataround 11% ofthetotalnumberof

    students isveryconfidentonthestudy material provided by CL toallstudents. Maximum (48)

    studentsareconfidentand believe that thestudy material is relevant.However 23% areof the

    neutralopinionthatstudy materialisneitherrelevantnorirrelevantfactorforsuccessinentrance

    examinationsandtheydonotdifferentiate between CLsstudy materialandthatofothersimilar

    institutes. Thesestudents may be primarily preparing forsomespecificexaminationsand may

    haverespondedtothisquestiononlyinthelightofthesespecificexaminations.

    Conclusion note: MAT is less difficult and syllabus

    11% ofthetotalnumberofstudents believesthat CL material isnotrelevantenoughto prepare

    forall MBA EntranceExaminationsand theydo feel theneed forexternal material.However

    nobody amongst all students feel that the material is highly irrelevant for all MBA Entrance

    Examinations.

    STUDENTS PERCEPTION ON ONLINE SUPPORT PROVIDED BY CL

    Outoftotalsampleof93 studentsthesurveyresultsstatethataround 14% ofthetotalnumberof

    studentsisveryconfidentaboutonlinesupport provided by CL toitsstudents. Maximum (52%)

    students are confident and believe that the online support provided by CL is better than that

    provided byanyotherinstitute.

    However25% areoftheneutralopinionabouttheonlinesupport provided by CL.

    5% of the totalnumberofstudentsdisagreesandanother 4% stronglydisagreewith the belief

    that CL onlinesupportis betterthanthat provided byanyotherplayerinthe business.

    Note: the perception of the students is based on their evaluation of the websites of various

    players in the business or they may have a friend/relative enrolled in another institute or

    themselves may be registered for online facilities provided by other institutes.

    promotionalactivitiesconducted by CL in Jammu. Thesestudents maynot beexposedtovarious

    mediaas theyhaveavernacular backgroundor beforejoining CL they maynot bevery much

    interestedintheactivitieswhich mayactually beconducted by CL

    16% of the total number of students disagrees and another 8% strongly disagree with the

    statementthat CL actuallyconductsvarious promotionalactivitiesin Jammu. Thesestudentsalso

    reportedthatthe promotionalactivities,ifatallconductedlackcreativeeffortandtherefore may
