CoversThroughout this research we have noticed that the majority of covers have chosen to shown a face on the cover. This has been done through using different mediums; illustration, photography and collage.

The striking colours on the publications suggest that they were influenced by the cultural aspects of that time.

Art Deco from the 1920s heavily influenced the design and layouts in the first half of the decade. 1935 was when the decline in Art Deco started.

KEN Magazine

KEN Magazine was a political magazine that was very controversial. It “was to tell the inside story on world events”. [Time magazine online]

It had been found to be linked with the communist party. Within a year of it starting, it had been closed by the government due to federal investigation.

It has a cultural significance as it was published during the start of the Second World War and produced stories about what was going on.

McCall’s Magazine• McCall’s was started in 1873 but was popular

during the 1930s.

• Aimed at Women.

• Format was changed over the years and became known as “ 3 magazines in 1”.

• Feminine layout – softer colours, lighter type.

• Featured Women on the front covers.

• First women’s magazine to feature stories / novel extracts by authors.

Authors for the magazine included: Alice Adams, Ray Bradbury, Gelett Burgess, Willa Cather, Jack Finney, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Barbara Garson, John Steinbeck, Tim O’Brien, Anne Tyler and Kurt Vonnegut.

DesignerTheodore G. Haupt• He was born on 11th October 1902 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

• Modernist art.

• Haupt was an American Painter Illustrator who worked in New York as a Graphic Designer for magazines such as ‘The New Yorker’ and ‘Vanity Fair’. He was also one of the many artists hired for the WPA .

• The WPA was created to be apart of President Roosevelts’ New Deal. To help their artists earn an income, as it was difficult for everyone to provide after the Great Depression, especially artists.
