Hobo auto races.
On the Tuesday following the event, the Women of the Ku Klax Klan issued the following resolution against
holding the races:
There comes a time in everybody's life and in human relations when the individual or society must set a
standard for the individual or community. Anything good or beautiful is uplifting, morally or spiritually.
Anything less is degrading and a downward trend soon leads to destruction of desire for better things.
Every child should be taught to admire and emulate a manly man and a womanly woman, to respect Sunday, the
day of rest and beautiful ideals, and to enjoy clean pleasures and to refrain from giving pain to others.
A child learns by seeing, hearing, imitating.
There has been much question as to the desirability of the so-called entertainment, known as “hobo
races,", given at various times and places in the recent past. The one last Sunday resulted in much
suffering to several young boys and their parents. It is never one person alone who is hurt if he has
anyone who loves him.
The entire idea and plan is one of recklessness. The hobo is not a desirable type of individual to
imitate; the drivers may not be expert or even dependable; the desired effect is toward the ridiculous.
A man who will deliberately enter such a race, or the person who will deliberately go to see such a race
is responsible for his own safety. But children run to a scene of excitement without any thought of
personal danger and must be protected as far as possible by human society.
In the case of Sunday, and the unfortunate accident, boys who were in the public park, a place supposed to
be safe for children, were attracted to the fence and across it and into danger and untold suffering for
some. As women interested in children particularly, and in social betterment in general, we ask that
public opinion will make a recurrence of such dangerous events and undesirable public attractions on
Sunday an impossibility.— Women of the Ku Klux Klan.
As a result of this, promoters of the races at Windfall, IN, built a substantial fence around the infield
enclosure and restricted spectators to this area.

On the 22nd July, it was reported that ‘“We will make Berrien county and the Twin Cities the quietest

Sheriff Fred C.Franz, Monday [20th], that there shall be no more auto races allowed in Benton Harbor. The
racers declare that if they cannot race, all other forms of Sunday diversion also will be taboo. The
sheriff clamped down the lid on auto races after the big Sunday exhibition.’

Kokomo, IN
26th July 1925
Races were stopped on the orders of Governor Ed Jackson. Sheriff Joseph Lindley was called on the Saturday
afternoon by the governor and told that protests had been made by citizens in the neighbourhood of the
speedway against the races and was asked if he could stop the races which were scheduled for the Sunday.
The governor offered further aid in case the sheriff anticipated trouble. Track manager and part-owner
Earl Richardson said that he had no desire to break the law in holding his races, but felt that he had
been treated much the same as the managers of races at Winchester who were compelled to call off a program
there because of the governor’s orders. The Winchester owners had protested that their track had been
singled out to be stopped while others in the state were not. The names of the persons who signed the
petition were not made public.

Fallon Fairgrounds, NV
30th August 1925
Harland Rich was killed testing his Chevrolet on the track. The track was in the process of being prepared
for upcoming races, and machinery had been left on the circuit. Every lap Rich had to swerve around it,
but eventually lost control, crashed through a wooden fence, rolled multiple times before coming to rest
in a cemetery. Inspection of the wreckage suggested that the steering rod had crystallised, a flaw
introduced in metalworking which can reduce the strength of the bit, and that the rod snapped when
turning.

Foster handed his car over to Harold Masterson, who
then finished the race.
Promoter H.A.Morrow advertised that 30-40 cars would turn up to qualify, so when the crowd of over 4000
saw only four cars turn out on track, they became restive. A group of fans made their way to the box
office to demand the return of their $1.50, so Morrow made himself scarce, disappearing with the money.
When the race was over, the drivers, police and other creditors, with the exception of the Fair
Association whom had collected their ground rental earlier in the day, were left empty handed. A party of
fans from Roanoke, headed by Edward J.Speer, filed an affidavit in the court of Justice of the Peace
Everett Hattery, charging Morrow with obtaining money under false pretences.
