Worldat War
The Allies’ victory over the Central Powers came soon after the United States
entered the war.
Germany tried to push into Belgium and France.
– Both sides used trench warfare that cost millions of lives and resulted in stalemate.
Germany used submarines to stop Great Britain from receiving supplies.
– Germany attacked unarmed American ships, causing the United States to enter the war.
United States joined the Allies in 1917, giving them a fresh advantage. Germany was pushed out of France.
Central Powers collapsed by November 1918.
The Treaty of Versailles changed the map of Europe and created resentment.
Treaty of Versailles
League of Nations
Nationalities
Proposed by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson as an organization where countries could solve problem peacefully
Land was taken from Germany and Russia, and Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Empire were split. Seven new countries were created.
Germany Punished
Germany had to accept blame for starting the war, slash its army size, give up colonies, and pay for war damages.
Instead of leading to lasting peace, the treaty caused resentment that set the stage for further conflict.
