COUNSELOR’S CORNER – SOCIAL NETWORKING Mrs. Schneider, Washington Middle School Counselor Social networking can be a useful, fun tool for teens to stay in touch with friends. But kids can be cruel and will use networking tools to hurt, embarrass, or harass one another. Parents, if you allow your teen to have any social network site, it’s important to talk to your teen about responsible online behavior. Remember, once your child posts something, it’s out of his/her control and can be copied, pasted, or forwarded by other people.

Tips for talking to teens about Social Networking: Talk to your child about controlling information he/she posts. Remember information can be copied, pasted or forwarded. Disable location services. Set rules about what’s appropriate – focus on positive and avoid negative. Encourage teens to self-reflect before they self-reveal.

Please note that many city ordinances prohibit harassment via electronic devices. State law prohibits harassment. A person as young as age 12 may receive a citation or be arrested depending on the severity of the offense. The top 5 Smart Phone Apps for Families for Monitoring Smart Phone usage:

Study Skills Summer Style Summer break is a time to relax and have fun in the sun! Parents, you can also use this time to encourage your child to continue learning. For example, if you are taking a trip, have your child do some research about the area, calculate mileage and the cost of gas, or keep a journal of each day’s activities. Daily math problems, journaling, and reading are great ways to keep up with academics throughout the summer months. Use math flashcards or grade appropriate workbooks to reinforce basic skills. Keep up with organizational skills and time management by having your child continue to use an agenda or an appointment book. These are skills that your child will need to use their whole life. Have an awesome, safe summer!!!

Social Media Addiction

Recent studies are showing some very negative effects of cell phone use and specifically Social Media and Gaming use. Here is a summary of a few of the negative effects:

How Social Media Addiction is Changing the Brain: Research is showing that the brains of the addicted teens have significantly higher levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter in the cortex that inhibits neurons, than levels of glutamate-glutamine, a neurotransmitter that energizes brain signals. This results in poorer attention and control…more vulnerable to distractions. Given the fact that teens’ brains are still developing adds an even greater sense of urgency to be aware of this problem.

How Social Media Addiction is increasing levels of anxiety and depression and unhealthy sleep habits: Research and information from Mental Health Counselors are indicating that teens who are addicted to Social Media or “Screen Time” are also showing an increase in anxiety and depression. Jean Twenge, a Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University, has noticed similar trends. “In 2011 and 2012, when smartphones were becoming more common among teens, there was a doubling in the suicide rate and tripling in emergency room admissions of self-harm among young girls, and also a 50% increase in the clinical depression rate.”

Social Media Addicted Teens focus on “likes” and comparing themselves to others: The need to be “liked” on social media is “causing teens to make choices they would otherwise not make, including altering their appearance, engage in negative behaviors and accepting risky social media challenges.” They are also more apt to compare themselves to others, leading to lower self-esteem issues. Increase in Cyberbullying: Many teens are using social media in a negative way; using it to bully others with a much larger audience and a greater amount of time to bully. It’s also easier to be less empathetic if you are hiding behind a screen and not face to face. Less face to face social interaction: Good communication skills are one of the top ten employability skills. Teens need daily practice to develop these necessary skills. What can parents do to prevent Social Media addiction and the negative effects of too much screen time? 1. Role Model appropriate screen time habits: How much time do you spend browsing, posting and

engaging with social media? Your children need and want to spend quality time with you. 2. Set a limit for time spent on social media: The US Department of Health recommended that under

the age of 2, there should be no screen time and over that age, two hours per day should be the limit. 3. Make screen time a treat or reward: Screen time can be a great reward or treat for completing daily

assignments, chores, or improving grades or behavior. 4. Keep electronics where you can monitor the use: Less access will also decrease less screen time

and more appropriate usage. It’s never a good idea to allow children to have electronics accessible during bedtime hours.

5. Spend time on a healthy hobby or enjoying nature: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wUYS2WFn8c https://www.bustle.com/articles/144893-7-ways-to-stop-your-social-media-addiction
