Gr3 Prix Du CapPAST WINNERS

he aptly named Cuvee Brut heads the Crawford attack and her decent recent form, good draw and Anton Marcus in the saddle suggests

she will go very close. The daughter of Count

Dubois failed at her one and only try at the turn – when unplaced in the 2014 Cape Fillies Guineas. She has since matured beautifully and grown in stature and looks ready to score a deserved first stakes win after two excellent Gr2 placings in the sprints.

Stable jockey Corne Orffer

rides her KZN Fillies Guineas winning coupling, Alexis.

This very capable daughter of Dynasty has had a quiet season so far and had nothing to come when out of the money in the Majorca.

She is the class proven performer around the turn and there should be little to choose between the Crawdord duo.

Flying HighMike Bass won this race

with the excellent Hammie’s Hooker last year and saddles Come Fly With Me for the Devines.

The daughter of Jet Master

has failed to build on her Diana Stakes runner-up finish at the start of the season but should find this more comfortable territory than her last two starts.

Adam Marcus saddles a coupling headed by the Ideal World 4yo, Fear Not.

The Mauritzfontein bred galloper may enjoy the drop down to 1400m and showed nice pace in the Majorca, where she clung on to run fifth and 4,15 lengths behind Inara.

A repeat of that level of performance brings her into the reckoning and a stakes win looks well within her scope.

Marcus’ Crystal Cavern has been rather disappointing.

The daughter of Horse Chestnut has had excuses – her running style can lead to traffic issues in the hurly burly of Cape racing, with its bunching, lack of pace and home run rail options. But she now needs to come to the party and show that she is better than her recent profile suggests.

Cat WomanPaul Reeves’ Sea Cat races

in the Met winner colours and is a decent five-time winning

daughter of Var. She won her penultimate start – a PE feature – quite readily and then showed pace but fell away to 5,50 lengths behind Inara in the Majorca. She will need to be at her peak to feature here.

Justin Snaith has three in the race.

Harvard Crimson ranged up down the inside rail at the 300m marker of the Listed Jamaica Handicap but failed to go through with her effort and ran fourth 2,60 lengths off Gathering Fame.

She has had no luck with the draw but could be more comfortable over the shorter trip here.

The 3yo Petalacould catch her breath here after failing in the Choice Carriers and then finding the 1200m a touch fast last time when staying on for fifth behind stablemate Acaciawood,

The latter has come good, winning 3 of her last 5 starts over the sprints and being out of a Fort Wood mare, should enjoy the extra 200m.

She looks a likely danger off the 53,5kg mark and must be respected.

Big StartTrainer Andre Nel has made

a flying start to his career and saddles School Run and the undefeated Lohnromance in the Plattner flag.

Regular man Aldo Domeyer opts to ride Fear Not for Adam Marcus- so if we trust jockey’s judgement, then these two look to be out of it.

School Run won an MR 84

Handicap over the straight 1200m in December and then followed that up with an excellent second to the highly rated Qing on Met day.

The daughter of Trippi steps up a rung here in terms of competition, but is well drawn and must have a place shout.

Lohnromance has won both her sprint starts in good style but was scratched with on overreach from her last intended start in the Majorca.

She has not raced for 8 weeks and has a 13 draw to overcome – but if she is as good as she is rumoured to be, she may be the value dark horse.

The likely pacemaker is Petty Officer, who is quick of the gates and will be right there early on from her 3 draw.

The 5yo daughter of Royal Air Force is a big girl with a lovely stride but her recent form suggests she may come up a few lengths short on these terms in this company.

Joey Ramsden throws the fit 3yo Visionaire filly Supercilious into the deep end after winning 3 of her last 5 starts.

She has drawn perfectly at pole position and has very decent course and distance credentials to her credit.

Wide GateVarumba has drawn

wide out at 12 and reverts to her own sex after being outgunned in the CTS Million Dollar last time.

She needs to learn to settle in her races and this cost her at her penultimate jump when a 2,65 length third to the decent Amarillo Rose over the course and distance.

The Listed Devon Air Stakes winner Flying Ice has failed to recapture her 2yo form.

After running on fairly smartly for fourth in the Choice Carriers Championship 2,85 lengths behind Silver Mountain, she failed to build on that in the Cape Fillies Guineas.

All The AcesBrett Crawford holds the

aces and much like the staying feature later on, one stable could dominate the race.

Cuvee Brut should hold Alexis – with Lohnromance and Sea Cat the dangers.

ALLEZ FRANCE STAKES at Turffontein last Saturday

Gr3 TOMMY HOTSPUR HANDICAP at Turffontein last Tuesday

his was a low-key non black-type feature but the victory with varied tactics being applied showed that Kissimee is overdue for a stakes win, and that must surely be just around the corner. It is unbelievable to note that Kissimmee has been winless for close

on 16 months, but her recent form has shown a marked upward curve – and given a chance by Met jockey JP van der Merwe in the right conditions on Saturday, proved the right medicine.

With Enchanted Silk a late scratching, the field was reduced to just nine runners and topweighted Vino Veritas went off a 17-20 fanvourite, with former KZN runner Patchit Up Baby at 5-2, with Kissimmee easy to back at 6’s.

Craig Zackey took Celtic Heroine out to lead Paris Princess and Luala, with Patchit Up Baby going well a few lengths off the pace under replacement rider Gavin Lerena.

Vino Veritas and Kissimmee were bringing up the rear early on.

Craig Zackey peeped between his legs at the 600m marker as Celtic Heroine galloped strongly

enny would have grabbed the milestone as a belated gift after enjoying his birthday just days earlier on 4 February. Viking Hero was also his ‘lucky’ 13th winner of the season! The evening’s events demon-strated the highs and lows of

the game, with trainer Sean Tarry and jockey S’manga Khumalo running rampant with 4 and 3 winners respectively, only to suffer the tragedy of losing the Trippi star, Zambezi River.

The inaugural CTS Lanzerac Ready To Run

Stakes winner was euthanised after falling in the sixth race after appearing to suffer an injury. Jockeys S’manga Khumalo and his colleague Matthew Thackeray, who also came down off Majestic Bay, were both badly shaken but seemingly in fair physical order afterwards.

But the night belonged to the good red wine on four legs that is the rare sprinting son of Mullins Bay.

Viking Hero was going nowhere fast earlier in his career, but the commitment of the Grant Maroun team and some natural sounding up have contributed to a sparkling revival that will see him take in the Senor Santa as his next

target. He is a a horse that has to be ridden ‘crook’, and Penny rode a copybook race on Maroun’s instructions – which included a confidence boosting pressure quote of ‘ride him like I told you and you will win’, as he was given a leg up. The Maroun sports psychology worked a charm!

The field was reduced to just nine runners with Mod Barley scratched in the absence of a suitable replacement for the stood-down Khumalo.

After Jade Bay had ripped away at breakneck speed early, Penny allowed Viking Hero to relax and produced him at the right time inside the 250m marker.

The gelding powered home

to win by 0,30 lengths in a snappy 56,52 secs,

Viking Hero was unwanted at 20-1 in the betting and his victory contributed to the evening’s lotto-style Pick 6 payout of R247 328.

Mike Azzie’s Splendid Garden came on strongly for second and showed the benefits in his performance profile with his generally improved behaviour.

The favourite Moofeed, who was bidding for the Hotspur double, also ran on a touch late and was a half-length further back in third, with Aurum Pot running fourth.

This was Viking Hero’s second feature win on the trot,

after grabbing top honours in the Gr3 Lebelo Sprint three runs back.

He has now won 6 races with 19 places from 38 starts for stakes of R708 350 – that is not bad for a horse who took close on two years to win his second race!

A 6yo gelding in the prime of his career, Viking Hero was bred by Barton Hall Stud and is a son of deceased Summerhill stallion Mullins Bay out of the four-time winning All Fired Up mare, Out Of Norway.

He was purchased for R30 000 by the Tawny Syndicate off the 2011 Emperors Palace National Two Year Sale.

RIP Zambezi River.

Trainer Grant Maroun provided 24 year old Jarryd Penny with the first graded race win of his short career when the lightweight booted home the rejuvenated Viking Hero to win the R250 000 Gr3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap at Turffontein on Tuesday evening.

PWinner 99 For Azzman

& Van VuurensBig owners are the cornerstone of any yard, but often come with major pressure. Trainer Mike Azzie has formed a winning combination with Adriaan and Rika Van Vuuren and he would have been thrilled to saddle their 99th winner together when the beautiful grey Kissimmee ran on powerfully to win the R125 000 Allez France Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday.

Twith Patchit Up Baby and Vino Veritas moving up dangerously.

At the 300m Patchit Up Baby loomed and looked a winner, but the flying Azzie grey was in full flight and she came forward strongly.

Kissimmee hit the front with a flourish at the 250m marker and drew off to win going away by two lengths in a time of 138,91 secs.

Patchit Up Baby had looked very dangerous late but had no answers for Kissimmee and had to be content with second.

Zrinski stayed on late to knock Vino Veritas many PA punters out of the Place Accumulator.

High-riding jockey JP van der Merwe said that Kissimmee was no longer so keen – “I was last and she saw switched off beautifully with the pace on. She ran on well,” he said.

Adam Azzie, deputising for his Dad, thanked the Van Vuurens for their support.

The Varsfontein Stud-bred Kissimmee is a 4yo grey daughter of Jet Master out of the Elliodor mare, Whatsinakiss.

A R750 000 National Yearling Sale purchase, Kissimmee has now won 3 times with 9 places from 21 starts, and too her stakes earnings to R298 125.

SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 19th - SUNDAY 21st FEBRUARY 2016 7

CTS Gr3 CHAIRMAN’S CUP at Kenilworth on Saturday

eading his column later in these pages, JR admits that he loves to win these events and he gives all three of his charges a decent winning chance. It is just a sad puzzle why his colleagues are keeping their lot at home – after all, the fifth cheque is a decent

R6 250 and that will pay a few weeks’ bills. The Saturday eight race programme sees

only 75 runners accepted, and this decently endowed feature only 6 of those – including an under sufferance MR 76 galloper.

Whether it is a practical or programming issue, it needs urgent sorting out – not gushy press releases!

Real PainAn old stalwart and a horse that must feel

like a Goodhope Racing mascot, tops the weights.

The magnificent grey King Of Pain hasn’t won a race since dethroning the champion Beach Beauty in the Gr1 Gold Challenge in June 2014.

The son of Greys Inn has never won beyond a mile in his career, but it certainly makes some sense to try his luck at a bit further – his runs in the Met and Queen’s Plate suggesting that

he is finding it tough going in the top echelon these days.

On breeding and banking on the Cape Crawl, he could have the class to outsprint them – doesn’t that just sound ludicrous?

Double BidHis stablemate Coltrane won this race last

year and ran on well in the J&B Urban Honey Stayers when beaten just 1,25 lengths by Ovidio, at level weights.

He had a setback a week prior to that race and he was fancied to go very close – with Anton Marcus up, he must go very close on Saturday – but the pace is a worry.

Third of the Ramsden trio is the Gr2 Gold Bracelet winner Gallica Rose.

The daughter of Silvano finished 2,55 lengths behind Coltrane on Met day and meets him on a half kilo better terms here. She also suffered the misfortune of a stumble.

She tries the 3200m for the first time – and looks likely to stay.

TroubleNothing went the way of Justin Snaith’s

Cape Summer Stayers winner Ovidio on Met day and he ran stone last behind Ovidio. He certainly gets the 3200m but needs to improve

on that run. The Ideal World filly is battling to assert herself and showed pace before dropping out of contention for a 4,80 length unplaced finish in the Urban Honey.

She is fitted with the pacifiers.

Mike Bass’ Three Balloons comes in under sufferance

but has won two of his last three starts over some ground.

He may have scope to improve and could be better than rated.

Coltrane is the choice to make it a double at the expense of King Of Payne and Gallica Rose.

Gr3 Chairman’s CupPAST WINNERS

The Cape Summer Of Champions Season 2015/2016 will close in grand style on Saturday with the much anticipated Cape Town Prawn Festival at Kenilworth Racecourse.

The race meeting includes two Gr 3 events, the Vasco Prix du Cap and the CTS Chairman’s Cup, so there will be good racing to watch, but it is also a family fun day out with plenty of on course entertainment and of course tons of prawns at bargain prices.

The Prix du Cap’s sponsor is Vasco Da Gama, a popular pub in Green Point frequented by sportsmen, sportswomen and sports fans, who enjoy the friendly and festive vibe as well as the superb variety of Portuguese style food on offer. It is very much a horseracing friendly pub, being owned by one of Cape Town’s most passionate racing owners, Bryn Ressell. Vasco have been involved in racing sponsorship before and bring their special vibe to the racecourse.

Prawn Stars At KenilworthCape Thoroughbred Sales (CTS) have brought plenty of excitement to Cape racing, firstly through their innovative inner city Premier Yearling Sale and latterly through the lucrative Sales Races they have put on, which included January’s CTS Million Dollar, by far the richest race in South African history.

Racegoers on Saturday will be able to enjoy succulent prawns for only R149.00 which includes a kilogram of prawns, chips or rice and a choice of peri-peri, lemon butter or garlic butter sauces.

This family fun day will not only include live entertainment, but racegoers on the day can stand a chance to win appliance giveaways. Winners will be drawn throughout the day in the winner’s circle and prize winners will need to be present in order to claim prizes, as well as produce a valid ID or driver’s licence. Gates open at 11H00 and entrance is free.

RTop trainer of stayers Joey Ramsden sets out on a mission to win the marathon R250 000 Gr3 Chairman’s Cup to be run over 3200m at Kenilworth on Saturday. It is a good start that he sends out a trio of big guns – and effectively saddles half the field.

he racing world has been tipped on its head since the start of the 2013-14 season. Empires have fall-en, partnerships we thought might

last forever have faded and Moreira has ridden more winners than any sane judge could have ever imagined.

So in light of Silvestre De Sousa “having a think” about whether to return to Hong Kong full-time – after riding legend Tony Cruz anointed him as the man to take the sword from the stone and challenge Moreira – we offer the cautionary tale of Richard Fourie, who cut short his full-time gig last weekend and returned to South Africa.

Fourie’s is a story that not only illustrates how dramatically the racing landscape has changed in less than three years, it is also a reminder of why it pays on a professional level to strike while the iron is hot and not to take anything for granted in Hong Kong racing.

SurpriseFourie surprised many

when he left here on a high in July 2013, having ridden 34 winners, stating he was going back to South Africa to win a premiership and, once that was sorted out, he would return one day soon.

Injury stopped him winning the title he coveted, but return to Sha Tin he did, but to a parallel universe where Douglas Whyte was no longer king, Neil Callan had become an established rider and Zac Purton, having won his championship and fathered his first child, had taken a chill pill.

When Fourie left there was a sense that his foundation was set – he was young and on the brink of following in the footsteps of the many South African champions to have risen through the ranks, including then-champion Whyte, whenever he returned.

The first thing Fourie’s shock decision sparked was for his young rival in South Africa, Karis Teetan, to come and fill the void he left. Teetan,

like Fourie, is a lightweight – a jockey capable of riding the horses at the lower end of the weight scale – and he slid straight into the slot vacated by his fellow apprentice school graduate, even riding for many of the same stables.

Before Fourie there had been a dearth of western riders capable of getting down below 115 pounds and Teetan hit the ground running in 2013-14, landing a winner at his very first start and impressing with his positivity, both in terms of personality and in the saddle. The biggest shift, and not just for the lightweights either, was just around the corner with Moreira’s arrival, but also at this time, the partnership of trainer John Size and Whyte was slowly being pulled apart.

Rules Are RulesA season earlier, a rule was

brought in to ensure one jockey could not ride too often for a stable – some even dubbed it the Size-Whyte rule – and looking back the rule seems a touch unnecessary.

As Whyte’s support from

Size waned, Moreira arrived and extinguished it almost completely. As an aside, but this fits firmly in the category of how much things can change in less than a year, it was just under 12 months ago when Happy Lucky Dragon Win wrote of how Whyte faced a late career-defining decision of who to ride in the Hong Kong Derby: Luger or Giant Treasure?

He gave up the ride on the winner, and when the two horses fought out the finish in the Group One Stewards’ Cup recently, he wasn’t on either horse. Worse still, he didn’t have a ride in the race.

At one time, Douglas Whyte could have been expected to ride either Giant Treasure or Luger in the Stewards’ Cup – but he didn’t have a ride in the race.

At one time, Douglas Whyte could have been

expected to ride either Giant Treasure or Luger in the Stewards’ Cup – but he didn’t have a ride in the race.

So fast forward to start of this season, to Fourie’s return: there is not only Teetan, but also Moreira, and a hungry bunch of local kids that have continued to develop.

At first Derek Leung Ka-chun, Vincent Ho Chak-yiu and Keith Yeung Ming-lun seemed stunned by Moreira’s dominance – at least before they were protected from the likes of Whyte and Purton, who couldn’t get down to bottom weights – but the shake-up might have been the best thing for them and they now seem more steely in their resolve.

ChangeWhen Fourie wandered

back into the Sha Tin jockeys room after just two seasons away, not only did he see Moreira, but there was also Chad Schofield, capable of riding 115 pounds himself, and of course Teetan – now with two seasons of support.

A back injury certainly limited Fourie’s returns – although when he sought medical attention after it flared up earlier this month, he had already applied to cut short his contract – but it was more about lack of support that saw him opt out of the second half of the season, with just six wins from 217 starts. Maybe the arrival of De Sousa – another natural

lightweight, but with the strength and aggression of a Mixed Martial Arts fighter - was the final straw for Fourie.

De Sousa (apparently, according to the man himself, it’s pronounced “De Sosa” and not “De Sooza” – but hey, what would he know?) is the flavour of the month.

After a win on International Jockeys’ Championship night thrust him into the spotlight, he notched 15 victories from 10 meetings. His support from the bigger stables continues to grow and so has the question, “Why don’t you stay full-time?” The way things can change around here, who knows the world into which [De Sousa] will return? Once on a hot streak, it pays to keep it going, and when weighing his options, it might pay for de Sousa to consider how much things can change in the space of 12 months.

Same goes for De Sousa’s role back “home” in England, where he scrapped his way to an unlikely championship without the support of a major stable. De Sousa is probably thinking he can have his cake and eat it too – compete for a second straight title and come back for a longer stint next time. The British season ends in early November and that is a good time to come back, but the way things can change around here, who knows the world into which he will return?

World Of Change – And More Change

Hong Kong in 2013 was a safer place in many ways: booksellers specialising in Chinese politics went about their business, street hawkers in Mong Kok sold their fishballs for Lunar New Year without batons being wielded or bricks being thrown and lightweight jockeys lived without the threat of having their rides stolen by the ruthless Brazilian Joao Moreira.

SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 19th - SUNDAY 21st FEBRUARY 2016 9

ith a bit of rain overnight, Sunday dawned mild and breezy – a rare treat for a mid-February day in the Cape. The venue of Val de Vie is situated a wheel-turningly pleasant 60 odd km from Cape Town with the route winding past several

wine estates for an early celebratory / late commiseratory drink. Access through the main gate had been speeded up this year (definite thumbs up there guys) and it was interesting to drive through the estate and note all the developments since my last visit.

LogisticsThe stabling complex was situated in the

same spot as last year – across the car park from the main Polo Club restaurant - and Jenny van der Hoff and her team had done sterling work to produce a veritable rabbit out of a hat and conjure an entire stable yard out of nothing. Last year’s lovely pop up café under the trees was back, even though the coffee vendor did disappear disappointingly early.

In the main building, big sales favourite Cally Hotson had set up shop in the foyer and hadn’t even finished unpacking before she was inundated with treasure hunters. The terraces had been partially covered by a large Bedouin tent, which was an inspired touch, affording a good view of the polo fields and yearling parade as well as respite from the sun. There was no VIP lunch this year – instead everyone was left to sample the wares from the Polo Bar and you could either sit in the main restaurant, picnic out on the terrace or find a cosy spot in the ballroom, which lent a laid-back, Bohemian air. The sales ring had been laid out at the end of main building – between the ballroom and the polo pavilion – which made the layout a lot more spacious and was a lot more user-friendly for the horses. The Val de Vie team had done a beautiful job of decorating the venue and in keeping with the surroundings, it was stylish and welcoming. It was fun to watch some of the polo, particularly as some of the polo crowd stayed to watch some of the sale, adding to the ‘day out in the country’ feel.

The HorsesBut enough about the setting, what about

the horses? With a comfortable 118 yearlings catalogued, of which 11 were Select, there was plenty of time to wander around the sales yard, catch up with friends and even pull out a horse or two before the main event got under way. Although the day started fairly quietly, the golf buggies were kept busy, ferrying an increasing number of people to and from the stable yard and there was an interesting spread of trainers and buyers from across the country.

Malan du Toit and his trusty team were there to caretake any fractious youngsters, with Copper King in particular doing a sterling job. Despite a fairly lengthy walk from the stabling complex to the sales ring, the yearlings coped admirably, with only one hiccup all day when Daytona’s lot 114 broke loose from his handler and went for a gallop across the polo fields.

The saleBack at ‘HQ’, formalities kicked off promptly

at 2:30 with Alec Laird securing the first lot, a Gimmethegreenlight colt from Varsfontein for

R180k. By and large the select section of the catalogue delivered and was where most of the interest was centred. Bearing in mind that it was a regional sale and that the sales company can do no more than facilitate what they are given, it seemed for the most part that those who were prepared to bring good, commercial horses, realised good, commercial prices, with the middle and lower brackets struggling and reserves forcing many to leave the sales ring unsold.

What the figures sayOf the 118 horses catalogued, there were 11

withdrawals, 3 vendor buy backs and 33 horses that failed to find new homes. The aggregate was R9,92 million (down from last year’s figure of R15,78 million), the average was down from R192k to R139k) and the median dropped from R115k to R100k. However, there was a new record set for the sale at R1,5 million (up on last year’s highest price of R1,2 million). Varsfontein As Agent were the leading vendors, consigning 3 lots for a total of R1,69 million, while Adriaan Van Vuuren’s Misty Meadows topped the buyers list, signing for 3 lots for a total of R1 620 000. Var was the leading sire by aggregate, followed by Tiger Ridge and What A Winter. The price by average painted a slightly different picture, with Var still on top, followed by Captain Al and Trippi

TBA CEO Kevin Woolward felt there were several mitigating factors, including the fact that there were more horses catalogued than last year, with 11 Select yearlings compared to last year’s 30. The crucial middle and lower market was largely missing and he felt that the state of the economy may have played a role. As usual, there were many lessons learnt and with breeders feeling that the sale comes too early in the year, among the changes for next year, the TBA will be giving serious consideration to moving the date. There have been a number of staff changes at the organisation with particular attention being paid to the bookkeeping side of things. Kevin confirmed that payment is demanded by 30 days. Any payments later than 45 days will be charged interest, after 50 days a final demand will be issued and anything over 60 days will be repossessed.

Talking horsesThe talking horses of the sale also delivered,

with Varsfontein consigning the sales topping filly and colt. As it’s polite to let ladies go first, I’ll start with the filly. Princess Peach (by Captain Al out of the Badger Land mare, Princess Tobin) was the last of the eleven Select Yearlings on offer and was knocked down to Glen Kotzen for R700k. Susan Kalmanson confirmed that Princess Tobin was purchased at a dispersal sale for the late Peter Mills. “It’s a proven nick and as a full sister to a graded winner, Princess Peach has already got paddock value,” she said. Princess Peach was a high quality, correct, athletic and racy filly with a good walk and looked worth every cent of her purchase price. I believe Princess Tobin currently has a Master Of My Fate filly at foot. Changing into her TBA Chairman’s hat, Susan commented that the market had been tough, with strong competition for good horses, but that overall they were satisfied with the prices they realised.

Satisfied purchaser Glen Kotzen said

Princess Peach was his pick of the sale and cheekily added that although he’d have liked to get her for a bit less, he still felt he’d got a steal. “If she’d been at the CTS Book 1, I would have had to go a lot more. She’s got enough value in the pedigree to go straight to the paddock, so I’m very happy.”

Game changerThe sales topping colt also

came from the Select Section of the catalogue in lot 9. Named Varlocity (by Var out of Star Deputy) the robust chestnut colt is a half brother to Gr1 winner War Horse and Supreme Cup winner Deputy Jud and he comes with a good story as he was bred by Varsfontein’s assistant stud manager and his wife, Jaco and Carolyn Erasmus. .

Star Deputy was owned in partnership by Messrs Ratner and Salzner and originally trained by David Payne and latterly by Snaith Racing when Payne emigrated to Australia. The story goes that the connections were desperate for the filly to earn black type, which she did in the 2002 Listed Queen Palm Handicap. Her next start was in the Gold Circle Oaks, where she fell after the pull up and broke her fetlock. The connections spent a fortune on costly surgeries to save her life and when the time came they felt she deserved a home at Varsfontein and approached stud manager Carl de Vos. Carl asked whether Jaco could have the mare, the connections said yes and the rest is fast becoming history. With some assistance from Carl, Star Deputy was sent to visit Victory Moon and produced the Gr1 winning War Horse in 2009. War Horse, originally known as Batian, fetched R275k on the inaugural Cape Premier Yearling Sale. Star Deputy’s 2010 foal was a colt by Black Minnaloushe named Cat in Command who sold for

R225k at the 2012 National Yearling Sale and now has 5 wins to his credit. In 2011 Star Deputy produced a strapping chestnut colt by Judpot who would go on to be named Deputy Jud and sweep all before him to win the 2015 Supreme Cup for Adriaan van Vuuren and Michael Azzie.

Special from the word go

While stud management jobs may not be the most glamorous in the world, they do offer perks such as working in the outdoors and the opportunity to supplement your income by breeding your own horses. With the R450k they received for Deputy Jud at the 2013 National Sales, Jaco and Carolyn put the money back into their mare and booked her to Var. Jaco explains, “The mare has staying blood and was one of those relentless gallopers, so she needs speed, which is what we’ve got from Var. I designed this foal to be my Variety Club – a galloping miler - and he’s been special from the word go.”

“The mare has been through hell and back, but despite everything, she’s as honest as they come and takes every year. In 2013, she scanned in foal at 35 days and then colicked and had to have a colic op. Her system went toxic and for three days it was touch and go, but somehow they pulled her through. Under those circumstances a mare will usually lose the foal, but when we scanned her again, he’d doubled in size – he’d not only survived, he’d thrived! He was a great, big bull of a horse. He weighed 62 kgs at birth and from the moment he got up, there was just something about him. With some horses you just know.”

“He’s also got the most incredible temperament. Most weanlings won’t come anywhere near you, but he

would come right up out of the group. He has this way of resting his head into your body and there’s a spot behind his ear that he loves you to scratch. He’s totally bombproof.”

Special connection“After Deputy Jud I’m just

so grateful to Adriaan van Vuuren and Michael Azzie. In fact, Adriaan’s daughter Kyla chose Deputy Jud and when this colt came up for sale I sent him an email and said I thought this was quite special. Adriaan replied that he unfortunately couldn’t make the sale, but when I saw Mike here, I knew.”

Varlocity had attracted a lot of pre-sale attention, so there was spirited bidding once he entered the ring, but the hammer fell the way of Michael Azzie on behalf of Misty Meadows at R1,5 million. After the sale Azzie commented, “We’ve obviously got Deputy Jud back home and although we’ve been struggling with a few niggles, we think very highly of him. I mentioned this colt to Adriaan and we decided that if he looked like a horse we’d buy him and we were fortunate to secure him.”

Jaco and Carolyn had the choice between offering the colt at the CTS Book 1 or the Val de Vie sale and chose to stick with the TBA. It seems their loyalty has been richly rewarded. The pair were hoping for around R800k for the colt and are understandably over the moon with the sales topping R1,5 million, which is a life-changing sum of money for a young family like themselves and Jaco proudly announced that his wife would be sleeping next to a millionaire on Sunday night!

It is an awfully long way from the sales ring to the race track, so this may only be the beginning of the story, but as beginnings go, it seems a pretty good one.

With a new team and new venue, the BSA Cape regional sale made a solid return at Val de Vie in 2015.

There were teething problems to be sure, but the team promised to grow and improve and Valentine’s day 2016 gave them the opportunity to deliver on that promise.

Lala won two races over sprints but showed she had the ability to win over further when a two-length second to Olma in the Gr3 Flamboyant Stakes recently.

Sweet love wasn’t the only thing in the air on Valentine’s Day at Sha Tin Racecourse, with an unexpected spike in betting turnover and attendance for the meeting. On a card that really didn’t look all that appetising as a betting medium the Jockey Club enjoyed a hangover of the best kind as the Year Of the Monkey spilt over into every lovebird’s favourite day. Betting bucked the season’s trend, rising by over HK$100 million on last year’s comparative meeting. The crowd was up by almost a third. What are we doing wrong in SA?

SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 19th - SUNDAY 21st FEBRUARY 2016 11

P E R S O N A L I T Y O F T H E W E E K

Jessica Slack

They say every horse should be loved by a little girl at least once in its life and if you had to ask any horse girl what she wants, the answer is usually a stud farm full of wonderful horses. With a beautiful and historic stud farm outside Kimberley, two exceptionally promising young stallions, paddocks full of blue-blooded broodmares and her first homebred Gr1 winner in the bag, someone who is living that dream is Jessica Slack.

Mauritzfontein past and present

Mauritzfontein was originally purchased by Harry and Bridget Oppenheimer in 1943 with a view to becoming a stud farm as “a shared interest in marriage” and the farm repaid the enormous energy and enthusiasm they poured into by producing an honour roll of champions. While Mrs O’s passing in October 2013 may have signalled the end of one era, having Jessica at the helm has marked the start of a new one. Taking over the reins of a 70 year old operation that has produced six July winners, a plethora of Oaks champions, a Triple Tiara winner and the incomparable Horse Chestnut might prove daunting for some, but as the old saying goes, ‘Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them’ and Jessica falls firmly in the first category.

With her classical Audrey Hepburn looks topped off with her infectious enthusiasm and impeccable grace, the diminutive Jessica not only has a firm sense of personal style and fun, but is proving to have a very sure touch on the breeding and racing operation as well. Resisting the temptation to fiddle with what is clearly a winning formula, she has astutely kept the tried and tested recipe, choosing instead to bring it up to date with a few deft twists. The first significant change is that Mauritzfontein now operates as a commercial enterprise. Secondly, it has joined forces with her mum, Mary Slack’s Wilgerbosdrift. “Although the farms run and operate separately, we breed under one name: ‘Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein’”. As Mary Slack also leant heavily on Mauritzfontein when she started out, this is also continuing something of a family tradition and Jess agrees. “Mum and I own Mauritzfontein together, and I rely heavily on her for advice on many things. Mauritzfontein is also really excite d about Soft Falling Rain and Flower Alley and we jumped at buying shares which incidentally sold like hotcakes!”

Mauritzfontein’s resident sire Ideal World is off the mark in no uncertain terms with first season produce Smart Call proving a startling flagbearer. Not only does she have multiple Gr1 wins to her credit, she is also standing on the threshold of an international campaign.

In addition, Mauritzfontein’s other stallion barn resident is the exciting Byword whose first yearlings have gone on sale in 2016 to great acclaim and things are looking very rosy indeed. Jessica talks us through her first two years at the helm.

Continuing legacy“Grandma passed away almost

2 1/2 years ago now. It’s pretty amazing what she and grandpa built and it’s a privilege to be part of it. All the staff are so wonderful and so kind – not only Guy Murdoch, but Nigel and Gail Page and everyone really, so at the moment I’m just learning from them. I am clever enough only to seek advice from experts. Guy, Mum, Jehan and Mike (de Kock) are all people I admire and respect. I rely on their advice and guidance.”

“It’s not a case of reinventing the wheel, although it’s obviously different with us now being commercial. We downsized initially – Grandma raced everything she bred and did not ever sell yearlings. Most, if not all the fillies returned to the farm after racing and so there were way too many mares. We also sold a lot of horses out of training too. Then we’ve slowly been trying to buy a couple of new fillies a year to try and get new blood back into the farm. That’s how Mauritzfontein started. My grandparents bought a few beautifully bred fillies in England and they became foundation mares, so we’re trying to get back to that winning formula.”

“We’ve currently got around 60-70 mares. We keep probably 6 or 7 fillies a year, everything else gets sold - if we can!” she laughs. “Our rule is that we sell every colt, so there’s never any fear that we’re keeping any of the best for ourselves and if you ever do see us racing a colt or a gelding, it’s generally because there was something wrong with it, or it was thrown off a sale or never made it onto one,” she says with refreshing honesty. “Jehan Malherbe has been unbelievably helpful and kind and has been a kind of ‘go to’ in terms of advice and sales and I have to give him a mention – he’s been amazing.”

Smart Call and winning the Met“It’s kind of amazing. It was

very special. Smart Call was the first horse that Grandma sent to Alec, who incidentally trained my

first winner, which made it feel extra special. It still hasn’t sunk in to be completely honest. I thought it would be great if she could run a place. When I looked at all the horses in the parade ring before the race, I was in awe – they all looked amazing. It still feels like a dream and my sisters and I are sure that Grandma must have had something to do with it. She would have really loved that. The first call I got after the race was from Boetetjies, who is one of the amazing guys who work at the farm. They bred Smart Call, it was their victory and I just wish Smart Call knew how proud and happy she had made everyone.”

“I was sorry Weichong couldn’t ride her in the Met – he’s worked on Smart Call her whole career and really loves her. Weichong and JP were in contact before the race and I noticed that JP got on and patted her just the same way Weichong always does, so that made me smile. I think Weichong was probably just as excited as us when she won.

“I saw him last week and it seems he doesn’t have to have an op and he seems positive and optimistic about recovering, so that’s great. That’s not to take anything away from JP, who rode a perfect race. He was a star, and we were really lucky that he agreed to ride her at the last minute. I am so pleased that his first Group 1 win, was on Smart Call, it made the win even more wonderful.”

Export“We’ve had a discussion about

it – I know it’s a serious slog, it’s a ridiculous route and the whole thing is a pain, but she is the perfect filly in terms of temperament and we feel if we don’t try, we’ll regret it. Alec’s going to spend as much time as he can with her. Steven (Jell) kindly said he’d help. Mike de Kock has trained many horses from Abington and has more experience than anyone with the travelling. He has been incredibly kind and helpful and so this is very much a “team effort”. We’ve been looking at every route we can. At the moment it looks like Mauritius is the only way out of here, so we’re waiting for them to get enough horses to ship. Alec’s always been very keen to take her to the Arc or possibly the Prix de l’Opera, but it may not be feasible if our timing gets too tight. We have to hope and pray that she travels well and gets there early enough.

All being well, we’re still on track for the Breeders Cup. The fillies race is on turf over 2000m and if all goes well, we’ll definitely give it a go. Banks Hill won it in 2001 and it would be amazing if Smart Call could follow in her grandmother’s footsteps. At this stage, it’s a very big dream, but then I believe that’s what racing is all about.”

What it means for the farm

“It’s been amazing really. Ideal World had his biggest book of mares last year, so I think people have had faith and seen good things, and there have been a lot of bookings since the Paddock Stakes and the Met which is wonderful. We’re really, really lucky. I know there’s a mountain of choice, in terms of well-bred stallions and new kids on the block, so now we need to keep going and I hope that he has a Group winning colt sometime soon. Smart Call has put Ideal World in the spot light, and we are all over the moon with excitement. It’s hard to find a better bred stallion, and we have all had huge faith in him, but now it’s cast in stone and the morale on the farm could not be better. It is possible that Ideal World may be getting an over dose of celebratory carrots, but then he deserves them!”

“We’re very happy to keep his fee low – if he does go up, it will only be fractionally - we’re not going to make him an expensive stallion. For people to travel a mare all the way to Kimberley, we know they’re really committed and we don’t want to scare anyone off with a giant stud fee. Plus I want lots of people have Ideal World champions. Luckily he’s so easy and so lovely. Whether he covers one a day or a whole bunch – he just takes it in his stride. He is heaven.”

The Byword Bonus

The incentive which was recently launched is a R500,000 bonus to the best Byword Stakes winner at the end of their three year old career. It is applicable only to his first two crops and only to horses that have passed through the sales ring. There is R400k to the owner, R100k to the trainer and a free Byword service to the breeder.

They say every horse should be loved by All being well, we’re still on track Jess explains, “With so many amazingly bred stallions on offer, The Byword Syndicate felt that for people to have faith in a freshman sire and ship horses all the way to Kimberley, we had to have something to catch their attention. Instead of paying dividends from his first two seasons, the syndicate decided to reinvest the money and offer a bonus to give people something extra to look forward to.”

Like his neighbour, Byword also has a good temperament. “He’s got a real presence about him,” says Jess. “Sometimes great horses have that way of looking off into the distance – he does that all the time – he’s a bit of a poser! By all accounts the Bywords are doing well and all the foals at the farm are beautifully put together. Even mares that usually produce very light foals are throwing very strong-looking Bywords, so we’re really thrilled. His mares list is improving and growing each year so I have no doubt that he is only going to get better and better.”

“We’re really lucky – both stallions are nice, relaxed, friendly types and only too happy to have their head rubbed or get a carrot. And both cover well, are very fertile and very gentlemanly. They are a pleasure to work with and Guy constantly reminds me how incredible lucky we are.”

National Draft“We’ve got 28 yearlings on

Nationals, which is our biggest draft so far, but it’s only our third National sale. We’re delighted to be offering some really nice horses. We’ve got a full sister to Smart Call’s dam called Crown Office who has the most stunning Tiger Ridge colt I’ve ever seen. There’s a Dynasty colt out of Flirtation – she’s one of my favourites, so obviously I love him and I admit to being completely biased! His name is Big Parade. There’s a really nice Captain Al colt who is a spectacular roany colour. He’s called Captain Kangaroo and is one of Guy’s picks. We have a beautifully bred Silvano colt, whose looks match his pedigree. Those are some of my favourites, but I’m delighted with our draft as a whole, hopefully there is something for everyone and it’s definitely our best one so far.”

Future ambitions“I think I must be the luckiest

person. I have been able to join an incredible team, and so I need to learn everything I can from them. We hope to constantly upgrade our stock and breed the best, fastest, toughest horses we can. I am not interested in numbers, just quality. Grandma and Grandpa set some pretty high standards, we want to live up to those and take the next steps -

and to breed champions of course!”

12 SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 19th - SUNDAY 21st FEBRUARY 2016

AMSDEN’SAMBLINGSI attended the sale at Val da Vie on Sunday and was alarmed

at the number of horses that either did not attract a bid or never reached their reserve prices.

So sufficient horses are available (possibly too many?) but fail to attract the required market to ensure that more than 10 runners participate in races.

Is this because of economic reasons or has the sport of kings lost its glamour to attract potential buyers?

I have been racing since 1965 but do not believe that I’m an expert but would prefer to provoke thought on the subject.

Historically, racing was the only medium in which South Africans could wage a bet.

Racing now competes with Casinos, Lotteries , sports betting etc and has to share the pie it once owned entirely. The bookmaker rings (Gold and Silver) hummed at every race meeting with punters running between the rings after sighting a betting move in one of the rings. This created quite an exciting atmosphere but unfortunately the bookies never contributed sufficiently to the welfare of the sport.

Venues like Hong Kong who only have tote facilities have a thriving industry as a result of that decision.

Terrance Millard said that he never wanted more than 60 horses in his stable. Some trainers now have more than 150 horses in their stables. Some of them enter 5 or more horses in a race but only race the best drawn horse.

As the topic of field sizes was not an issue in the old days , I didn’t note how often a horse would run in a year compared to the c urrent situation . Perhaps someone more knowledgeable could inform us. If so, was it because horses were sounder then or were training facilities comparatively better. But it is a known fact that a horse could win up to 5 races before meeting the wrath of the handicapper and therefore avoid the reluctance of trainers to enter winning horses too often. Quality horses who are worthy of being followed are what made the sport in those days and not just the feature race days like the Met and Durban July.

To compete with the Lottery etc racing has now adopted the “winner takes all” attitude and together with the MR system have made betting more of a lottery than a science.

Newcomers to the sport who want to wage a conservative bet eg Place accumulator no longer get the 4th placed horse in large fields and have to accept that couplings do not apply in Jackpots etc. Not the way to attract new followers to the sport.

We , the purists , love horses so much that we will never stop supporting the game but , in view of the circumstances , we have to be pro-active to continue the sport that our children will enjoy as we did.

Lastly, as an industry, thousands of people are employed in the game and the state receives vast amounts of taxes.

The RA should use some of their funds to subsidize owners who support smaller trainers for their survival (employees as well) so as to attract larger fields.

The straight-shooting and much loved Molly, now in his 69th year, hopes to be back on the track for Classic Day on 2 April and was typically full of positivity this past weekend.

Molly Back For Classic Day

e had a fantastic Met day and Justin Snaith’s tally was quite remarkable. He had a huge amount of runners but it was still a spectacular achievement and well done to him.

Short HeadsI must say that it hurt a little to get beaten a

short head in the Cape Flying Championship by my good mate, Brett Crawford. Many short heads have gone my way and Met day has usually been lucky for me. However, during the past few years, short heads have not been going our way.

But we had a few good seconds. Coltrane had a minor setback a week before his run and this might have cost him finishing that bit closer in the J&B Stayers race. I am very much looking forward to running all our stayers this weekend. It is good to have a few of them as we have been a bit short of staying horses the past couple of years. There is nothing better than training a really good stayer and it always gives me a huge amount of satisfaction.

Setting SaleThere are a number of sales going on.

It must have been tough for the TBA this weekend. They had to take on Valentine’s Day, Soccer Super Sunday, the International Cricket final and Six Nations rugby. I know sales dates are formulated far in advance, as is the racing

ailey puts his heart and soul into the job both for the good of the industry and for the lives of his pride

and joy, the apprentices, and admitted to being thrilled by Van der Hoven’s Million Dollar win and the turnaround in fortunes it has brought to his career.

However, he explained, the Academy would not be viable as a learning institution were it not for its funding structure. The racing industry would instead have to revert to the old system of apprentices being indentured to trainers.

The Academy budgets for expenditure per annum of R13,174,063 per year.

The breakdown of this amount is 51% on salaries, 6,4% on running costs of the Cape Town Academy, 4,8% on the Port Elizabeth Academy, 6,3% on the Stables and horses at the Academy, 5,7% to the kitchen, 4,7% on Property costs, 4,1% on electricity, 2,5% on vehicles and 14,5% on other costs such as transport to and from races etc.

The 51% for salaries might seem high, but it compares

programme. Racing, judging on the size of our fields, is going to have to start being a lot more flexible and so is a certain sales company.

CTS have proven that they are flexible and the opposition is going to have to start doing the same if they want to keep going.

It is not just about the trainers being at the sales and buying horses: one needs the potential owner there as well. Sadly, there was just far too much world class sport to ignore.

Thankfully the weather has started to cool down a little bit here and I think the horses are enjoying it. Coats are still shiny as we head into our last feature race weekend.

As I said earlier, we had a good record in the Chairman’s and other staying races, including the PE Derby, and I love to win these. Fingers crossed we can sign off on a winning note. All three of our runners must have a lively chance.

London Ho’I am off to London for a few days and will

then head to Australia for the Melbourne Premier Sale. It is a lovely sale to attend with

top quality yearlings on show. I just hope it is not too hot as the weather seems to follow the sales around. Thankfully, Cape Tho-roughbred Sales are held under cover and with air conditioning – a huge plus factor when viewing yearlings.

It is time to start following the Joburg programme.

We could well be taking a couple up for the sprint races. I am very much looking forward to getting my old friend, Red Ray, back. It will be an emotional reunion. The family have been good to me and let’s hope the big fellow comes back as good as ever. I am certainly excited at the prospect of training him again.

I will be having a quiet couple of days in London and I cannot express how much I am looking forward to it. The past few weeks have been particularly hectic. Once I head to Australia, it will be nose to the grindstone again with many yearling to view, something I particularly enjoy.

Colonel Avo will be steering the ship while I am over the water.

It has been a while since I have put pen to paper. Life has been hectic with not a spare moment, writes Joey Ramsden.

WRacing, judging on the size

of our fields, is going to have to start being a lot

more flexible - and so is a certain sales company

very favourably to other training institutions.

Bailey points out research would show schools and colleges spend probably between 65% to 68% on salaries and added the Academy runs on a tight ship and has a “very sleek” staff.

The Racing Operators (Gold Circle, Phumelela and Kenilworth Racing) subsidise the Academy to the tune of R6,7 million per year, which equates to about 50% of the required budget.

Therefore if the parents or guardians of the apprentices were required to make up the shortfall, they would need to contribute R6,5 million in total, and the current 37 apprentices countrywide would be charged training fees of R175,000 per annum.

This would in most cases be impossible and some are unable to even afford the reduced fees charged. In fact the current training fees in total contribute only R530,000, or 4%, to the expenditure budget.

This means the Academy are left with a shortfall of close to R6 million, or 46% of the budget.

Therefore the riding fee and stakes money accumulated through the race riding of the

apprentices is a vital contributor to the running of the institution.

The apprentices, upon signing their indentures, agree two-thirds (67%) of their income will be put towards the Academy’s expenditure budget and the other third (33%) goes into a personal savings account. Whilst a good University Student will graduate with zero money to take home, a good riding apprentice can expect to leave the Academy with over R200,000 in his back pocket.

However, even with this funding plan in place, the Academy have a problem because the apprentices’ riding income contributes only about R2,95 million per year, which covers only 22% of the total expenditure budget. The Academy were still left with about a R3 million shortfall (24% of the budget).

Bailey’s unremitting appeals for help to the Board of Higher Education eventually led to a visit by cabinet minister Blade Nzimande in 2012. The latter was so impressed with what he saw, including the seamless integration of the students, he immediately contacted CATHSSETA. Consequently the Academy have received a government grant ever since.

Bailey’s efforts also saw funding contributions being made by the gambling boards.

The 24% shortfall has thus been covered, while necessary upgrades to the facility have been possible and the Academy have also been able to come in line with global trends in professional sport by providing the apprentices with biokineticists, gymn facilities, a state of the art equisizer etc.

Bailey also pointed out an apprentice will on average take two years before earning any income, while it is only the cream who actually pay their way.

Ironically, Van der Hoven would have left the Academy with very little at the end of his five years, which were drawing to a close at the time of his miracle Million Dollar win.

However, his indentures have now been extended into a sixth year to allow him to reach 50 winners, because history has shown apprentices who have been granted their licences without losing their claim have never made it in this toughest of professions.

SAJA Defends Position

South African Jockeys Academy (SAJA) Headmaster Graham Bailey has poured energy into his important role in the industry since starting in 2009 and has brought about many positive changes, but has often had to endure negative feedback based on false information. And the latest bout has been the mumblings about the perceived unfairness pertaining to apprentice Heavelon van der Hoven having to pay a large proportion of his CTS Million Dollar prize money back to the Academy.

broken collar bone. Fortunately the incident took place after the finish line and no other horses or riders were injured.

The on course vet examined Winter Breeze and although she was reported unsound on her off fore, she survived the incident relatively unscathed. It is the fourth time Strydom has broken his collar bone.

While this sort of injury normally takes 6-8 weeks to heal, complications can extend the recovery period and he relates that the last time he suffered a broken collar bone, it took nearly 6 months to heal. At this stage his biggest concern is missing Dubai, but if all goes well, he hopes to be back in action in time to ride on World Cup night.

He had a hyperbaric treatment on Monday and was scheduled to see a shoulder specialist in the course of this week.

Strydom made mention of the Vaal’s medical team, trainers Louis Goosen and Michael Azzie and SAJA riding master Gary Waterston for their assistance at the scene of the accident as well as long time friend Barry Redford for all his help.

Race To Be Back For World Cup

THE 1650m HK$800 000 race proved a real thriller for SA racing fans in general, with young Chad riding a bold race on Ho Lee Horse to beat Dad Glyn on Entrusting, with Dougie Whyte third on Super Silks.

To make matters even more interesting, Mauritian born former SA based Karis Teetan ran fifth on True Comment.

Glyn was not to be outdone and was in the winner’s enclosure two races later on Vanilla for Caspar Frownes.

Chad has been based at Sha Tin as a club jockey since last September, with Glyn based in Sydney.

With the current shortage of riders, Glyn was called upon by the Jockey Club to ride on Sunday – presenting a first for Hong Kong racing, although both have ridden against each other many times in Australia.

It is not the first time that a father-son combination have been licensed at the same time, though – Hong Kong legend Tony Cruz began his career in 1973-74 while his father Johnny still held a licence, but they never rode in the same race.

gave us confidence to acquire the horse last year. He’s also been very helpful with advice since.

“Liquid Mercury is a sound and honest horse and he’s settled in nicely here in the desert. I told Christophe he could ride it 1kg overweight as I knew it was too light for him. We believed Liquid Mercury was much better than rated and having the stable jockey ride him was preferred, even if he was overweight.

“As I said yesterday, we didn’t want to step Liquid Mercury into a distance race like this so soon, but we had no choice and he came through his test zestfully, he won with

something in hand.” Mike wasn’t sure about the quality of the field, but it should be noted that the second horse, Code Of Honour was the runner-up to Vercingetorix in the 2014 Ford Taurus Trophy over 1800m and on that alone can be no slouch.

“We have two options with Luiquid Mercury. We’ll consider the Nad Al Sheba Trophy over 2810m or the Dubai City of Gold over 2410m for him next. Golden Soul is a contender for the Nad Al Sheba Trophy too. We were impressed with the way he stayed on tonight in the Gulf News Trophy, he is a nice horse and will make improvement.’’

Mike congratulated Gaynor Rupert of Drakenstein Stud with her first winner in Dubai and said: “Liquid Mercury is by Trippi and I am surprised that he has such good stamina. The important thing is that our breeders and horses in South Africa are top class, they prove it almost week after week!”

Mike also had praise for the grey’s groom, Thomas Ncume, this week’s ‘Man In The Mirror’.

He told: “Thomas gave us confidence every day. He wouldn’t know about Liquid Mercury getting beat. He said early in the week that he was going to be in Andrew Watkins winners’ photo and that he wanted to look ‘better than Michael Jackson’. He bought himself a smart new suit and even got some white gloves for the occasion. That’s confidence for you!”www.mikedekockracing.com

There were smile s all round in the winner’s enclosure at Meydan on Thursday night after Liquid Mercury had galloped to a commanding win in the $US175,000 Gulf News Handicap over 2435m on turf under Christophe Soumillon.

NImpact Report (EIR) received from the Capital Property Fund in September 2014 complied with stringent regulations and adequately addressed concerns raised during an appeal.

Capital has since merged with JSE listed Fortress Income Fund, which will now develop the project. It found that public participation process followed in the environmental impact assessment process was more than compliant with EIA regulations and it outlined stringent parameters for development in response to objections raised.

As a result, appeals lodged in response to the environmental authorisation granted in May 2015 were dismissed and the original decision was upheld.

Eye-catching OpenerScottsville 7th February

A maiden juvenile plate over 1000m got proceedings underway in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday and here we saw a smart performance from the Mike De Kock trained newcomer AL HAWRAA. Sent off at the prohibitive odds at 1/5, the daughter of New Approach lost two lengths at the start and very quickly found herself detached at the rear. Once into stride though she quickly made up the ground, and was already at the front 400m out. She ran on strongly from there onwards and with the rest some nine lengths adrift she easily accounted for QUEENIE by two and a half with some in hand.

The faster of the two 1000m events was not surprisingly the MR77 Handicap won by BELLICOSITY. Nibbled at on course into 5/1 from 7’s, the Fort Beluga gelding made all. He was challenged strongly by the running on A P STRIKE below the distance, but he did have that one held by a length at the wire.

Another to win well from the front on this card was PROMISSORY in the faster of the two maiden plates over 1200m. He stepped on the gas going through the 400m and with the remainder well beaten he comfortably accounted for the running on THE MONEY MAN by a length and a half.TITBITS

The uneasy favourite SILKEN (18/10 out to 3/1) was baulked for a run 400m out when third beaten a length and a quar-ter in the maiden plate over 2000m.

Oh So EasyFairview 8th February

They raced on the poly track on Monday where the fastest of the three 1000m events was the boy’s division of the maiden plate won by GREEN GRASS. Sent off fourth in the betting market at 5/1, the son of Seventh Rock was soon up handy. He was ridden to lead going through the 200m and comfortably accounted for the 11/10 favourite SPORTSTRADER by a length and a half.

There was also three races run over 1900m and quickest against the clock in these was SCARLET BERRY in the MR89 Handicap. Always handy in what soon became a strung out field, Grant Paddock’s charge got up late to deny GLOBAL EXPRESS (led 1200m).

The lucky last was a MR76 Handicap over 1200m and here the locals were sent home happy when BELLA SPUMANTE did the business. An incredibly easy winner on her first start in the province last time out, Alan Greeff’s charge raced third, and was always travelling well. She struck the front 200m out, and eased down at the finish won with plenty in hand by a length and three quarters.TITBITS

The 3yo HARMSTON HERALD was flying at the finish when only failing to land the girl’s division of the maiden plate over 1000m by the narrowest of margins.SLEWSGATE also ran on very strongly late in the MR72 Handicap over 1300m and he did get up to win by that very same margin.DREAMFOREST showed considerable improvement when winning the MR68 Handicap over 1900m going away by three and a half.

Three From SevenKenilworth 9th February

The faster of the two 1000m races in Cape Town on Tuesday was the MR70 Handicap won by SAILS SET. Sent off second favourite at 28/10, Brett Crawford’s charge raced in midfield during the early part of the race. She put her head in front 100m out and won well by three quarters from the nibbled at outsider SUN AT MIDNIGHT.

The only other distance to stage more than one race was 1400m and in the faster of these two handicaps, a MR97 affair, the 3yo MIDNITE ZONE registered his second career victory. The third of three winners on the seven race program for trainer Brett Crawford, the son of Trippi was always handy. He was ridden to lead as they approached the 100m marker and won going away from a very useful older horse in SAIL SOUTH.

In terms of distance the easiest victory on the card was recorded by PERSIAN SILK when opening her account in the maiden plate over 1200m. Another to race handy, the Captain Al filly struck the front going through the 400m and only having to be pushed out in the closing stages of the race won going away by four.TITBITS

PREOCCUPATION came from the back when winning the MR67 Handicap over 1800m going away by a length and a quarter.

NAP BETS* Fancied ** Strongly fancied

*** Very strongly fancied

By just one hundredth of a second the faster of the two juvenile plates over 1000m on Tuesday evening was the boys’ affair won by the newcomer HE’S A VAR. Taken straight to the front by Sherman Brown, Leon Erasmus’ charge led throughout. He kept on strongly at the business end of the race and won fair and square from the running on favourite RIVARINE.

There were four races run over 1000m in total and the fastest of these was the bill topping Gr3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap won by the rank outsider of the nine horse party VIKING HERO. Freely available at 20/1 on the off, the Mullins Bay gelding raced in the rear early on. The field was always tightly bunched though, and running

on best of all over the final 400m he got up very late to deny SPLENDID GARDEN.

The best bet on the card for many was TROPHY WIFE in the pinnacle stakes and in what proved to be the faster of the two 1600m events she did indeed do the business. Always in the red, the well weighted daughter of Tiger Ridge raced sixth of the seven for most of the journey. She made up the ground quickly when asked for her effort and with the rest well beaten she comfortably accounted for FORTITUDE by a length.TITBITS

Racing for the first time since finishing third on debut a year ago, MOMBELA won the maiden plate over 1160m going away by three.

After the scratching of OLMA the Sean Tarry trained IN OTHER WORDS looked to be a good thing in the conditions plate on Wednesday afternoon and so it proved to be. Eventually sent off at 8/10 in what was the fastest of the five 1600m events on the card, the daughter of Trippi raced third for most of the trip. She put her head in front 200m out and won going away from MAMASITA (led 300m) by two. Interestingly, In Other Words has now won all five starts on the poly whilst she has not managed to win in two outings on turf.

The 3yo SCARLET RIVERA was all the rage to win the girl’s division of the maiden 1600m and in what proved to be the slowest of the 5 x 1600m races she did indeed do the business.

Taken straight to the front by Anthony Delpech, the Go Deputy filly (sweating) led throughout. She found extra when challenged early in the straight and only having to be pushed out won with some in hand by a length and three quarters.

The faster of the two 1200m races was the MR78 Handicap where PETER PIPER scored a very easy victory. Another to make all Dennis Bosch’s charge led by just a length and a quarter for most of the journey. He quickened well early in the straight and won with authority by three and a quarter.TITBITS

The 3yo CAROLINE’S CALL won the maiden plate over 1000m very comfortably by a length and a half.

ernstein, who died in 2011, is not only the sire of 2015 Gr1 Breeders ’ Cup Mile winner, Tepin, but also o f t h e n o w Gainesway-based

Karakontie, who won the same race one year earlier. The horse was a dual champion sire in Argentina, whose top runners in that country included Horse Of The Year, Storm Mayor.

A full brother to Gr3 winner Caress (whose multiple Gr1 winning son Sky Mesa has more than 50 black type winners to his credit), the Gr3 winning Bernstein lacked nothing in terms of pedigree when he retired to stud. He lived up to expectations, even if he never quite became a commercial standout, with his 90 stakes winners

including more than 20 Gr1 winners (with the majority of Bernstein’s top flight wins coming in South America). His sire, Storm Cat, was an exceptional stallion and dual US champion, whose many high class sire sons include triple champion Giant’s Causeway – sire of Saturday’s Gr3 Sam F Davis Stakes winner Destin.

Bernstein (who is bred on similar terms to another sire success in Harlan’s Holiday) also shares his sire with the likes of Hennessy, Tale Of The Cat, Stormy Atlantic, Storm Boot, Harlan, Forest Wildcat and Tiger Ridge – among others.

PowerfulBernstein’s female line is

equally powerful. Not only was he a full brother to the above mentioned Caress

and ill-fated Gr3 Gardenia Handicap heroine, Cat Attack, but his half brother, Della Francesca, (by Danzig) won the Gr2 Gallinule Stakes and ran third to champion Rock Of Gibraltar in the Gr1 Irish 2000 Guineas.

Bernstein, who traces back to the mighty matron La Troienne, is also very closely related to dual Gr3 Derby winner, Wiseman’s Ferry, the sire of charismatic dual US Horse Of The Year, Wise Dan, Wiseman’s Ferry being a son of Storm Cat horse Hennessy and Emmaus (a daughter of La Affirmed).

La Affirmed (Affirmed), dam of Bernstein and second dam of Wiseman’s Ferry, in turn, is herself a three parts sister to US Champion 2YO, Outstandingly (by Affirmed’s sire Exclusive Native). The latter is the fourth dam of

one of Europe’s top 2yos of 2015, Lumiere, winner of the Gr1 Cheveley Park Stakes and a daughter of the Storm Cat line horse Shamardal.

Sparkling GemHowever it is arguably his

fourth dam, Busanda, who has been the gem in this family.

The daughter of Triple Crown winner and champion sire, War Admiral, not only was herself an outstanding racemare but left behind a remarkable legacy which has seen her make her mark in stud books all around the globe. A winner of ten of her 65 outings, the tough Busanda won both the Alabama Stakes and Suburban Handicap (over males), with both races at various times receiving Grade One status.

She was equally successful at stud, and is the dam of Horse Of The Year and leading sire, Buckpasser (by Tom Fool), widely recognised as one of the most successful broodmare sires of all time. Top stallions out of Buckpasser mares include Al Mufti, El Gran Senor (damsire of Empire Maker), Miswaki (damsire of Galileo), Northern Guest, Private Account, Seeking The Gold (grandsire of Dubawi) and Woodman (broodmare sire of More Than Ready), and Buckpasser’s daughter,

Lassie Dear, is the second dam of hugely influential US champion sire, A P Indy and his successful half brothers Honor Grades and Summer Squall. Another Buckpasser daughter, Spring Adieu, is the second dam of Danehill (Danzig) and the influence of this great champion continues to grow, with numerous outstanding performers inbred to the 1966 US Horse Of The Year. However, Busanda’s influence does not stop with Buckpasser and Bernstein and their numerous top class descendants. She also produced Gr1 Futurity Stakes winner, Bupers (Double Jay) while her daughter, Navsup, is the dam of Gr1 Woodward Stakes hero, Polish Navy (Danzig), whose offspring included Gr1 Kentucky Derby winner, Sea Hero.

Bupers’ daughter, My Bupers, produced the great racemare My Juliet (Gallant Romeo) – USA’s Champion Sprinter of 1976 and a winner of no fewer than 24 races. My Bupers is also the fourth dam of South African champion, Kimberley Mine (Fort Wood).

Splendid StuffBusanda’s daughter, Oak

Cluster, made her mark in South Africa.

She is the third dam of ill-fated champion sprinter Splendid Ann (Raise A

Man) and the second dam of successful sire and broodmare sire Complete Warrior (Dewan). The sire of seven Grade One winners (including record breaking filly Wainui),

Complete Warrior is also the broodmare sire of last season’s champion sire and seven times champion 2yo sire, Captain Al. A son of former champion sire, Al Mufti, Captain Al, whose half sister, Shadow Dancing, is both a Gr1 winner and producer, is intensely inbred to Busanda, with his sire being out of a daughter of Buckpasser and his broodmare sire being a great grandson of the former Suburban Handicap winner.

Other top class performers inbred to this truly remarkable matriarch include the Gr1 winners Clever Trevor, Stormy Kiss, champion Storm Mayor and Unshaded.

Outstanding horses inbred to her son Buckpasser are too many to mention but they include the likes of Air Force Blue (War Front), Angus (Northern Guest), Aptitude (A P Indy), Astronomer Royal (Danzig),Chiselling (Woodman), Corinthian (Pulpit), Frankel (Galileo), Frosted (Tapit), Golden Lilac (Galileo), My Flag (Easy Goer), Night Of Thunder (Dubawi), Roderic O’Connor (Galileo) and Tonalist (Tapit), among many others.

The Busanda Effect

BEclipse Champion Turf Female of 2015, Tepin, who made a winning reappearance on Saturday when successful in the Gr3 Endeavour Stakes, is a daughter of one of Storm Cat’s most underrated and best bred sire sons, writes Sarah Whitelaw.

Captain Al

THE Eric Sands trained Streak Of Silver made it two wins from his last four outings, and his second win in just five starts, when he landed the spoils in a handicap over 1400m at Kenilworth last Tuesday.

Rated by connections as a very nice, the promising 3yo son of Silvano looks destined for bigger and better things.

The Highlands Farm bred Potala Palace and Streak Of Silver are both out of the talented Alzao mare Alignment, who was narrowly beaten in the Gr3 Prestige

Stakes. The talented half brothers are from one of the greatest families in the stud book, and trace back to the magnificent founder mare Simon’s Shoes.

Numerous classic winners trace back to this mighty matron including Irish 2000 Guineas winner and legendary sire Sadler’s Wells, Golan, North Light, Windsor Slipper and Godiva.

Other notable performers in this family include champion Thatch (sire of former top SA sire Golden Thatch) and the outstanding stallions Fairy

King and Nureyev. This is also the family of ill-fated sire sensation Northern Meteor and the hugely promising young sire Smart Missile, who is currently one of the leading first crop sires in Australia.

Gr1 Premier’s Champion Stakes winner Potala Palace (a son of Sadler’s Wells’ great champion grandson Singspiel) will be represented by some eye catching yearlings in 2017 –when, no doubt, this family’s influence will have grown further still.

Potala Palace Relative Looks Progressive

Highlands Farm’s exciting young sire Potala Palace looks to have a very promising half brother to his credit.
