U.S. Armament Corp, after 2 years of research and development, withthe original plans and specifications has brought back to life the historicalModel “1877 Bulldog Gatling ” gun.Thismuseum quality gun ischambered in the original 45-70 Govt. Caliber. The maximum firingrate of 1000 rounds per minute is about twice of the typical U.S. machinegunof WorldWar II.The 1877 Bulldogwas the first production model tohave its barrels and breech section fully enclosed in a cylindrical housing,giving the gun the appearance of a small cannon. The Rear sight movesup and down in a groove in the cascabel plate. The Bulldog is equippedwith a Bruce Feed Gravity Feed system (not a magazine) which holds 40 rounds in parallel and is fed with wooden feed blocks. The Bulldogmodel has 5-18 1/4” barrels with an overall length of 34”. The gunweighs 135 pounds and the tripod an additional 135 lbs. The tripodmount includes beautiful brass and iron components with legs of solid

ash wood. The Bulldog was the first rear crank gun that Gatling everproduced. Every hand turn of the rear crank produces a complete revolution of the 5 barrel unit thus firing the gun 5 times.Once therounds are fired, they are automatically ejected from the gun. At the rearof the gun, there are adjustments for windage aswell as elevation.

The original 1877 Bulldog Gun was tested for accuracy and scored an incredible 996 direct hits out of one thousand rounds at a distance of 500 yards.

The Bulldog comes with 3 original type transit chests, 5 wooden loadingblocks capable of holding 20rounds each,modern safety system, operatingand technical manual, 1- Bolt Disassembly Tool and 5-Alignment Tools for re-assembly after cleaning. It also comes with a 1 year limitedwarranty on all parts and labor.

atling conceived the idea of his gun andbegan work in 1861 with a prototype beingmade in 1861. The gun was demonstrated in1862 and a patent, No 36836, for “Improve-ment in Revolving Battery-Guns”, wasgranted on November 4, 1862. This gun wasa crude predecessor of what was to becomeone of the most significant firing mechanismsof all ordnance history.

After a successful demonstration inIndianapolis in 1862, Gatling contractedwith Miles Greenwood and Company inCincinnati, Ohio to produce 6 weaponsbased on the 1862 patent.

Gatling continued to perfect his gun bydesigning a breech system that would allowthe cartridge to be inserted and withdrawn

from a chamber that was an integral partof the barrel requiring the breech mechanismto have a reciprocal motion. This led to thedesign of theModel 1865, the precursor of alllater Gatling guns. Gatling continued to refinethe operation andmechanism of his gun.

The Model 1877 "Bulldog" was the firstGatling gun to feature a fully enclosedbronze housing over the barrels and breech.The "Bulldog" was a five-barrel .45 cal.tripod mounted weapon. A few weremounted on a light cavalry cart. A rearmounting hand crank permitted a very highrate of fire of up to 1,000 rpm, almost twice therate of a typical WorldWar II machine gun.

Bruce feed, named after it's inventor, L.F.Bruce, permitted the Gatling gun to be

loaded directly from 20 round cardboardcartons or wooden feed blocks into a two slotvertical bar. When one slot emptied, gravityforced a full slot over the feed hopper.

By alternately loading the empty slot, acontinuous fire could be sustained. TheBruce feed was a favorite of the U.S. Army.

The Gatling gun was the beginning of thestate-of-the-art manually operated guns thatflourished until Hiram Maxim took the nextstep with fully automatic guns, but Gatling’soperating principal lives on today in Vulcansand Miniguns.

Richard Gatling pursued and promotedmany new inventions until he died inFebruary 1903, at the age of 84.

HistoryDr. Richard Jordan Gatling was born in Hertford County, NorthCarolina in 1818 and came from a family of inventors. In 1847-1848, he studied medicine at Laporte, Indiana and the following yearhe entered Ohio Medical College from which he received his degree.
