The other has split its two with each game decided by four points or less. And the two are tied for the most Ivy League titles with 18, looking to gain an edge toward winning another championship on national television on ESPNU. Dartmouth has made winning look easy to start the 2019 campaign, outscoring the opposition by a 73-9 margin with a defense that leads the FCS in fewest points allowed. Last week, the Big Green handled Colgate — a team that reached the FCS quarterfinals last year — in the first meeting be- tween the two in eight years. The 38-3 final provided the largest margin of victory for either team over the other in their 26-game history. It was a breakout game for QB Jared Gerbino, who is quickly shedding his ‘wildcat quarterback’ label this season. The senior completed 12-of-16 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns, all of which are career highs. The 193 yards more than triple what he had amassed in any game previously. Gerbino showed he could throw the ball down- field after throwing for a mere 39 yards on eight completions in the opener as he completed five passes of at least 30 yards, three of which put points on the board. Sophomore TE Robbie Mangas had three of those 30-plus yard grabs, including a 34- yard touchdown. The first score came on a 30-yard toss to WR Hunter Hagdorn, and the longest of the night was a perfectly placed throw in the end zone to WR Drew Estrada from 40 yards out. While not one Big Green runner had even 50 yards on the ground, Dartmouth still managed 175 with RB Dakari Falconer racking up 49 on six car- ries, all during the 97-yard, fourth-quarter march for the final touchdown. Zack Bair added 40 on six carries plus caught a team-high five passes for 41 yards, while Caylin Parker ran for a 4-yard score among his 37 yards. The defense was just as impressive, denying Colgate the chance to move the chains on fourth down four different times. DL Jackson Perry was in on three of those tackles, two of which were sacks. Dartmouth as a team got to the Raider QB four times after coming up empty at Jacksonville in the season opener. Although the Big Green D was on the field for 35 minutes, they played fresh the entire game with Buddy Teevens — who needs two more wins to reach 100 at Dartmouth — shuttling in numerous players throughout the night. A total of 24 players had at least one tackle with Perry leading the way with nine and LB Jack Traynor and CB Isaiah John- son adding eight apiece. As much as the offensive line was a question mark prior to the season with four starters having graduated, place kicking was an unknown as well. Connor Davis, who had some difficulties with the duties last year as a freshman, has started his sophomore season strong, converting all 10 PAT op- portunities and also booting a 39-yard field goal last week as time expired for halftime. His performance garnered him the Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week, Dartmouth’s first such honor in just over two years. THE SERIES QUAKERS LEAD 48-36-2 Buddy Teevens is 6-12 against the Quakers over- all with a 4-6 mark at Franklin Field. Penn coach Ray Priore is 1-3 versus Dartmouth. Since Ivy play officially began in 1956, Penn holds a 33-30 advantage. Dartmouth won 20 of the first 26 games before Penn took 26 of the next 32, but the Green have since won four of the last five meetings. The Quakers own the longest winning streak in the series at 11 games from 1942-56. Dartmouth is 17-31-1 at Franklin Field but have won its last two contests at the venue. Scouting the QuakersPenn’s season-opening loss was perhaps more

impressive than its victory last week as the Quakers were nipped by a single point at Delaware, a team which is currently ranked in the top 20 in the nation-al FCS polls. But last week Penn held off a winless Lafayette team on the road by a mere four points.

Marching the ball up and down the field has not been a problem as the Quakers average nearly 500 yards a game. Nick Robinson lines up behind center, throwing for 463 yards at a nearly 70 percent completion rate with five touchdowns and one pick.

The running game belongs to Karekin Brooks, who leads the nation in rushing by a wide margin, averaging 180 yards, including his third career 200-yard game (202) last week. He hasn’t had much luck with the Big Green defense in the past, however, with 106 rushing yards and one touchdown on 27 carries in three games against Dartmouth. And he has had only one run longer than nine yards (11), that coming as a freshman.

Ryan Cragun does the yeoman’s work among the receivers with 16 grabs for 273 yards and two TDs. The next leading receiver is Tyler Herrick with eight catches for 75 yards, and Brooks has hauled in six throws out of the backfield.

Penn has been quite good against the run, yielding just 102 yards per game, but the opposition has averaged over 270 yards through the air at a 68 percent completion rate. Linebackers Zach Evans (16 tackles) and Brian O’Neill (14) are generally in the middle of the action, with the latter registering a pair of sacks. All of that passing has helped the Quakers lead the FCS in sacks per game (5.0) with nine differ-ent players having a hand in that number.

The kicking game features David Perkins who has converted all 7 PATs but missed his lone field goal at-tempt, Jake Haggard who boomed a pair of punts over 50 yards last week, and Drew Brennan on kicking off, though he performed the punting duties in week one.

Ray Priore, in his fifth year at the helm of the Quakers, earned the Ivy League Coach of the Year award in his first season and led the Quakers to a share of the conference crown in each of his first two years. This is his 33rd season on the Penn staff, help-ing secure 10 Ivy titles in 28 seasons as an assistant with his last 16 as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach.

Last Year Against PennDartmouth jumped out to a 13-0 lead early in the

second quarter before the Quakers closed the gap to six points shortly before halftime. But the second half was painted Green as Derek Kyler threw three TD passes and Connor Davis booted a career-long 44-yard field goal before Penn tacked on an incon-sequential touchdown in the final 20 seconds. Kyler finished the game with 221 passing yards on 18-of-21 throws, and the Big Green racked up 186 yards on the ground as well despite not one player collecting more than 37.

The last game at Franklin Field was a bit more memorable as Dartmouth came away victorious on the game’s final play. Trailing 13-10 with 5:37 to go, the Green traversed 80 yards in 15 plays, the last being a one-yard bull run into the end zone by Jared Gerbino for a 16-13 victory as time expired.

15 Straight Non-League VictoriesWith the 38-3 win over Colgate last week,

Dartmouth has now won its last 15 non-conference games dating back to the 2014 season, beginning with a 24-21 victory over Holy Cross. It is the lon-gest such win streak for the Big Green during the Ivy League era that began in 1956. You would have to go back to the 1922-28 seasons to find a longer win streak against teams that did not eventually form the Ivy league — nearly twice that of the current streak (26). Oh, and the last five wins in the streak have been by a combined 190-23 tally.

Putting on the WinsSince the start of the 2014 season, Dartmouth

was won 40 games and lost only 12, the best overall record amongst Ivy League teams in that span, two games ahead of Harvard. The Crimson has a slight edge in conference games (26-10 compared to the Big Green’s 24-11), but Dartmouth has won eight or more contests in four of the last five years; no other Ancient Eight squad has accomplished that more than twice.

Outside Looking InDartmouth finds itself pressing its nose against

the window of the STATS FCS Top 25 poll as the Green are listed as the first team among the others receiving votes. The team just ahead of them hap-pens to be Princeton, the only Ivy League team in the top 25. Last year, Dartmouth ended the season 18th in the STATS poll and 15th in the coaches’ poll.

Special Teams Player of the WeekThanks to a perfect night kicking the football

against Colgate, Connor Davis was selected as the Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week. The sophomore (and son of the 1993 Lou Groza Award winner as college football’s best kicker, Judd Davis) converted all of his PATs as well as his lone field goal attempt from 39 yards as time expired in the first half. He is not just the first Big Green player to earn the honor in two years, but first Dartmouth place kicker to be honored since Alex Gakenheimer in November of 2014.

Buddying Up to 100 VictoriesWith the 2-0 start to the 2019 season, Buddy

Teevens enters the Ivy League opener with a 98-92-

2 record at Dartmouth, leaving him two wins shy of 100. Only one other Big Green coach has won more than 60 games at the helm of the program, that be-ing the legendary Bob Blackman, whose name also graces the endowed coaching position inhabited by Teevens. Blackman won 104 contests, so if Dartmouth can at least repeat its record from a year ago, Teevens would surpass Blackman as the school’s winningest football coach.

Defensive DominationAfter two games, Dartmouth leads the FCS in

fewest points allowed (4.5 per game), a year after finishing second in the category (12.0). The Big Green also rank in the top 10 in passing yards allowed (126.5, second), red zone defense (50.0 percent, second), total defense (287.5, ninth) and team passing efficiency defense (108.46, 10th).

Gerbino Lets It FlyEntering the game with just 22 completions and

210 yards to his ledger in 18 games at quarterback, Jared Gerbino was given the opportunity to air it out against Colgate, and he did with great success. The former wildcat QB connected on 12-of-16 throws for 193 yards and three touchdowns, all three of which went for at least 30 yards. All told, five of his passes went for 30 or more yards, the longest a 40-yard bomb in the end zone to WR Drew Estrada. His pass efficiency rating of 207.36 and completion percentage (74.1) would both rank second in the FCS, but he is three pass attempts shy of the minimum qualification.

Mangas Hits 100Sophomore TE Robbie Mangas got a chance to

dip his toes into the receiving waters last year, catch-ing five passes for 80 yards as a rookie. Against Col-gate, he surpasses that yardage on just three catches of 34, 35 and 36 yards. The “short” one took him to the end zone, and his 105 yards gave Dartmouth a 100-yard receiver for the second straight week and matched the team’s 100-yard receiving games from last season — two.

Perry Plugs the GapsColgate attempted six fourth-down plays on

Sept. 28, and four times the Big Green defense was up to the task. More often than not, it was DL Jackson Perry that stood in the way of the Raiders picking up a first down as he made a stop on three of those four denials — all in the first half — including two sacks. The last of the three tackles was a 7-yard sack as he swatted the ball loose, which LB Naeem Morgan scooped up and set up the field goal as the half expired.

Running the WealthThe Dartmouth running game, which ranked

12th in the FCS last year at over 250 yards a game, is piling up the yards once again (208.0 per game, 23rd nationally). But the Big Green don’t feature a workhorse like Penn’s Karekin Brooks. Instead, Dart-mouth has five players averaging between 26 and 50 yards per game, led by junior Dakari Falconer. He led the Green on the ground against Colgate on a mere six carries totaling 49 yards — all of which came during one possession in the fourth quarter.

HEAD COACHBuddy Teevens ’79, who

as a player led Dartmouth to the 1978 Ivy League championship, has won three more conference titles in 19 years as the Big Green head coach. He first earned consecutive crowns in 1990 and ’91 in his first stint, then guided Dartmouth to

its league-record 18th Ivy League title in 2015.A native of Pembroke, Mass., Teevens was a

standout quarterback for the Big Green as he was named the Ivy League Player of the Year and an honorable mention All-American while leading Dartmouth to the league title as a senior in 1978. He also lettered in hockey, helping the Big Green to a third-place finish at the 1979 NCAA championship.

Teevens began his coaching career at DePauw before becoming the offensive coordinator at Bos-ton University in 1980. His first head coaching gig came at Maine, posting the first consecutive win-ning seasons (6-5 in ’85, 7-4 in ’86) there in 21 years.

After his first tour at his alma mater, he served five years as Tulane’s head coach. He was instru-mental in building the foundation that allowed the program to achieve perfection in 1998 with an 11-0 record. Teevens then spent two years as the offensive coordinator at Illinois before three bowl seasons with the Florida Gators in 1999-2001.

Prior to his return to Dartmouth, Teevens was the head coach at Stanford for three years.

Semifinalist for Campbell TrophyLinebacker Jack Traynor was named as one

of the semifinalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, known as the academic Heisman for college football. The fifth-year senior is an engineering major with a 3.68 GPA and twice has been named to each of the All-Ivy League First Team (unanimous-ly), the Academic All-Ivy League Fall Team and the FCS Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team. He celebrated the honor by collecting his 200th career tackle with his first of eight stops in the 38-3 win over Colgate. Traynor is the first Big Green player with 200 tackles in a career in six years.

Swann SongPreseason All-America CB Isiah Swann has yet

to make his 2019 debut, having sat out the first two games while nursing a minor injury. The senior is tied for the Dartmouth record for career intercep-tions with 13 after leading all of Division I (FBS and FCS) last year with nine picks. Though his services have not been needed in the first two games as the Big Green shut down the opposing passing games, he is expected to play — will be a welcome addition to the defensive backfield — against the Quakers.

Shut-Down DefenseA year ago, Dartmouth had one of the best

defenses in the FCS, ranking second in the country in fewest points allowed per game (12.0) and rushing average (79.7). That defense has led to opponents finding it difficult to rack up big numbers. Not one opposing player has run for 100 yards in a game in the last 22 games, and only one amassed 100 receiv-ing yards in a contest last year. Also, no quarterback threw for 300 yards against the Dartmouth defense in 2018. Here are the most recent players to top those marks against the Big Green D:

100 Rushing YardsCharlie Voelker, Princeton (111) Nov. 19, 2016100 Receiving YardsReid Klubnik, Yale (124) Oct. 5, 2018300 Passing YardsChad Kanoff, Princeton (444) Nov. 18, 2017

Season-Opening DominationDartmouth has won 10 consecutive season open-

ers with the 35-6 win at Jacksonville on Sept. 21, and usually the Big Green have won going away. Only twice has the opponent been within single digits at the end of the game, and the average margin of vic-tory is nearly 21 points. And the combined score of the last three season openers? 114-13.

Swift VictoryIn this day and age of media timeouts during

essentially every game, it was quite surprising that the 35-6 win at Jacksonville barely lasted even two and a half hours. The official game time of 2:33 was the fastest game for Dartmouth since a 17-13 win at Cornell on Nov. 5, 2016 took exactly 2:30. Average time of a Big Green game since the start of the 2016 season? Two hours, 59 minutes and 50 seconds.

Estrada Posts Career DaySenior WR Drew Estrada did just about

everything for the Big Green in the 35-6 victory at

Jacksonville, leading the team (and setting career highs) in yardage for rushing (79), receiving (104) punt returns (52) and all-purpose (235). His 62-yard run (a career long) to start the game set the tone, and he recorded his first 100-yard receiving game, the first by a Big Green player in nearly a full calen-dar year (Drew Hunnicutt had exactly 100 against Penn on Sept. 29 last year). Estrada also caught two touchdown passes, matching his career total enter-ing the game, and his 235 all-purpose yards are the 10th most ever at Dartmouth.

First Career Catch Goes for SixThat’s points, not yards. Sophomore tight end

Joe Kramer hauled in a five-yard toss from Jared Gerbino in the first quarter at Jacksonville, which was not just his first career touchdown, but first career catch. He is the fifth Big Green player in the last three seasons to reach the end zone with his first career reception, joining Jake Guidone, Derek Kyler and Robbie Mangas from last year, plus Cam Poole from the 2017 campaign. And while it wasn’t a touchdown and it doesn’t count as a reception in

the stats, J.J. Jefferies’ snare of a pass on a two-point conversion last year was the only throw he caught in his career. Biggest common denominator? Five of the six players listed here are tight ends. So which one is the outlier?

Punt Cross UpNo Dartmouth player had blocked a punt since

Matthew Shearin got a hand on a Brown boot in the 2016 season. Junior Tanner Cross put an end to that drought at Jacksonville, completely thwarting a Dol-phin punt, which was fallen on 22 yards behind the line of scrimmage to set up the Big Green’s second touchdown of the day.

Brief DayDavis Brief got a relaxing trip to Florida as the

senior punter was not called upon even once to per-form his duties against Jacksonville. It was just the third time in the last 28 seasons that Dartmouth did not punt even once in a game. The last time was in a 41-20 win at Penn in 2015, while the other came in a 43-20 season-opening triumph at Bucknell in 2010.

Co-CaptainsFor just the second time in the past decade,

Dartmouth will feature only two captains leading the squad — seniors Isiah Swann and Jack Traynor.

708 Wins All-TimeLast year, Dartmouth won its 700th game, becom-

ing just the sixth FCS team to reach the milestone. That win came two games after playing its 1,200th contest as well. Now after 1,211 games in the 138th season, the Big Green have posted a record of 708-457-46, a winning percentage of .604. Only 20 FCS teams can boast a win percentage of .600 or better.

Preseason PollThe Ivy League Preseason Media Poll was

revealed last month with Dartmouth pegged to finish where it did last year — second. But if there is one thing Big Green fans have learned over the past decade, it is that the media has a tendency to under-estimate the Hanoverians; Dartmouth has finished higher than its prognosticated place in nine of the last 10 years, including last year when the team was predicted to finish sixth.

For the second straight year, Yale was picked to take home the title with nine of the 17 first-place votes. Dartmouth received two votes for the top spot, but last year’s champion, Princeton, had four yet was listed third in the poll. Bad news for Yale: Over the past 22 years, the media has correctly picked the champion just three times — Penn in 2003, and Harvard in 2008 and 2015. The complete poll can be found on page seven of these notes.

The Experience FactorDartmouth has half of its total starters on offense

and defense returning to the field in 2019 with five on offense and six on defense. Despite the gradua-tion of Rashaad Cooper, more than 60 percent of the rushing yards are back on the roster this year (1,589 of 2,547, 62.4 percent). All but 21 of the 1,626 pass-ing yards return, and most of the receivers are back in the fold, representing 70 percent (1,139) of those yards. The biggest loss is on the offensive line, which had the same five starters in all 10 games last year with only one returning in 2019. On defense, three of the top five tacklers moved on, but the Big Green still have more than 60 percent (259 of 689) of last year’s stops on this year’s active roster.

Still All-Time Ivy ChampsSince the Ivy League began play in 1956, no other

school in the conference has won more football titles than Dartmouth with 18. The last time an Ancient Eight squad had more crowns than the Big Green was in 1961 when Yale had the grand total of two. The next season, Dartmouth equaled that total and has never looked up at another team since. But Penn

picked up its 18th championship in 2017 to match the Green, putting the 56-year streak in jeopardy should Penn win the race this year.

Returning All-Ivy PerformersLast year, the Big Green claimed a total of 17

players who earned All-Ivy honors, eight of whom made the first team. Three of the first-teamers are back — all on the defensive side — in DL Jackson Perry, CB Isiah Swann and LB Jack Traynor.

Two of the five second-teamers return as well, DL David Chalmers and QB Jared Gerbino.

Swann Preseason All-AmericanAfter earning consensus All-America honors

last year for leading all of Division I (FCS and FBS) and setting a school record with nine interceptions, CB Isiah Swann unsurprisingly has been named a preseason first-team All-American by STATS and

several other organizations. In addition, Swann is on STATS’ watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the top defensive player in the FCS. Last year, Swann finished fifth in the voting for the award, the highest finish for any Big Green defender ever.

Traynor Preseason Player of the YearPhil Steele released its three preseason All-Ivy

League teams with a dozen Big Green players listed, led by LB Jack Traynor was anointed the preseason defensive player of the year. Traynor has twice been named to the postseason All-Ivy League First Team unanimously. Joining Traynor on the first team are CB Isiah Swann, QB Derek Kyler and LS Grant Jaffe. The second team was graced by DL David Chalmers, WR Hunter Hagdorn TE Connor Rempel, DL Niko Lalos and S Ryan Roegge. Third-teamers included OL Zach Sammartino, LB Nigel Alexander and PK Connor Davis.

Hagdorn Looking to Climb ChartsJunior wide receiver Hunter Hagdorn enters

the 2019 campaign with 122 receptions and 1,523 receiving yards, placing him 10th on Dartmouth’s career lists for each category. He needs only 14 more catches to move into the top five, but the top spot would be an extremely tall order as he trails Jay Bar-nard ’04 by 94. With 477 more yards through the air, he would become just the sixth player in Big Green history with 2,000 to his name.

National PollsDartmouth found itself in the end-of-year polls

last year — 15th by the AFCA and 18th by STATS. The AFCA ranking was the highest for the Big Green since the Division I classification split into two subdivisions in 1978. It was also the fourth time Dartmouth finished the year ranked with the other years being 1990 (17th), 1996 (17th) and 2015 (23rd).

And finally, with Princeton ranked above the Green, it was the first time two Ivy League programs were ranked in the top 15 in any poll. This year, Dart-mouth continues to receive votes in both polls, but has not cracked the top 25.

2018 Comeback Player of the YearLast year, the Mayo Clinic in association with the

Associated Press, awarded three inaugural Comeback Player of the Year awards across all of college football to players that overcame severe injuries or illnesses to return to the field and make an impact on their team. One of those three awards went to DL Seth Simmer, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the spring of his freshman year. Originally told he would not play football again, he had the surgery to remove about 90 percent of the tumor, though it left him unable to hear in his left ear and took out his balancing nerve, forcing him to learn to walk again. After missing the 2017 season, he returned last year to contribute 11 tackles, including a key sack on a safety in the epic battle against Princeton.

Simmer isn’t the only Big Green player to go through a severe life-threatening illness; sophomore DL Alex Schmidt suffered a stroke at the age of 17. After a three-day stint in the hospital, he had to undergo speech therapy and went through numerous tests before being cleared to play football again dur-ing his senior year of high school.

One of the Last to Kick OffThe Ivy League football schedule always starts a

couple of weeks after the rest of Division I. But after being the absolute last team to kick off the season in five of the last seven years, Dartmouth gets a few

hours head start on three other Ivy teams this year, with Brown, Harvard and Princeton all starting their games between 3 and 6 p.m.

2018 RecapI imagine most people remember quite a bit

from last year, but if you are like me, you still need a little refresher on how things shook out:• Dartmouth finished the season 9-1 overall and 6-1

in conference play to finish second, trailing only a 10-0 Princeton team.

• The Big Green traveled to Princeton to take on the Tigers in one of the most anticipated games in recent Ivy memory with both teams sporting 7-0 records entering the contest. Princeton won the defensive struggle, 14-9.

• Over the last two years, Dartmouth has lost just three games, none by more than five points. And seven of the Green’s last eight losses have been by eight points or fewer.

• Dartmouth began the year destroying teams, winning each of its first five contests by at least 20 points with an average margin of nearly 30 points.

• Two of those victories were by shutout — 41-0 over Georgetown and 42-0 against Sacred Heart.

• The Big Green earned its first win over Harvard in 14 years and first home win over the Crimson in a quarter century, exorcising that demon with a 24-17 triumph.

• The only team to top 20 points against Dartmouth was Cornell in a 35-24 road victory the week after the tough loss at Princeton.

• That win over the Big Red extended Dartmouth’s personal winning streak against Cornell to 10, its longest against any Ivy League opponent currently.

Showdown at Yankee StadiumAs part of not only the 150th anniversary of

college football but also the 250th anniversary of the founding of Dartmouth College, the Big Green will host Princeton in a rematch of last year’s epic battle. The game is set for Nov. 9 at Yankee Stadium, mark-ing the second time in three years that Dartmouth will play a football game at an MLB stadium. Two years ago, the Green defeated Brown at Fenway Park, 33-10. This will be the first football game at Yankee Stadium for Dartmouth.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Senior Drew Estrada racked up a career-high 235 all-purpose yards and caught a pair of touchdown passes to lead visit-ing Dartmouth (1-0) to a 35-6 victory in its season opener at Jacksonville (1-2) on Saturday afternoon. The victory was the Big Green’s 10th straight on opening day and 14th consecutive against a team from outside of the Ivy League.

Estrada did just about everything for Dartmouth, catching six passes for 104 yards — his first career 100-yard game — rushing three times for 79 yards and returning a pair of punts for 52 more. Sopho-more tight end Joe Kramer hauled in two touchdown tosses as well — the first two catches of his career.

Three Big Green quarterbacks all proved effec-tive in guiding the offense as the trio combined to complete 21-of-27 passes for 186 yards and four touchdowns while rushing 13 times for 62 yards. Senior Jared Gerbino connected on a steady diet of short passes, hitting on 8-of-11 throws for 39 yards and two scores, while junior Derek Kyler aired it out a bit more with 111 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 7-of-9 passes. Senior Jake Pallotta took over in the fourth quarter and was 6-of-7 for 36 yards.

“I was very pleased to see all three quarterbacks run the offense well throughout the game,” said Buddy Teevens, the Robert L. Blackman Head Foot-ball Coach. “Jared threw the ball effectively, Derek got a chance to show he can run the ball as well, and Jake kept the guys focused in the fourth quarter and continued to move the ball. We were a little careless with the football [the Big Green fumbled three times and lost it once], which we hadn’t done during the preseason, so that’s something we’ll need to tighten up.”

The Dartmouth offense scored touchdowns on five of its first six possessions, quickly taking com-mand of the game and leaving no doubt as to the outcome. Estrada got things rolling right off the bat by galloping 62 yards on a jet sweep on the game’s very first play from scrimmage. Four plays later, se-nior Caylin Parker pounded the ball across the goal line from a yard out and sophomore Connor Davis banged the ball off the upright and through for a 7-0 Big Green lead barely two minutes into the contest.

Estrada made his presence known again on the first punt return after Jacksonville was stymied on its first possession, returning the kick 32 yards deep into Dolphin territory. But the Green came up empty for the only time in the half when Jackson-

ville’s Clark Nasser stopped sophomore Zack Bair short of the marker on a 4th-and-1 run.

Although the Dolphins were able to advance the ball to midfield, junior Tanner Cross blocked a punt to give Dartmouth excellent field position once again. The Big Green took advantage of it this time, covering the 28 yards in seven plays, culminating on a 5-yard scoring strike from Gerbino to sophomore tight end Joe Kramer, his first career catch, with under two minutes left in the opening quarter.

Jacksonville pushed into the red zone on its next possession, thanks to a 44-yard bomb from Calvin Turner to B.J. Byrd, but the drive stalled at the 11 on downs. Kyler took over behind center and promptly guided Dartmouth 89 yards down the field in just nine plays. A 12-yard pass on 3rd-and-9 to Bair kept the drive alive, and Estrada put the points on the board by hauling in a 26-yard throw in the end zone.

Gerbino returned for the following drive and methodically marched Dartmouth 13 plays down the field for another touchdown in the final two minutes of the half. Three times the Big Green converted on third down, the last being a 3-yard toss to Kramer in the back corner of the end zone and a 28-0 lead, which is how it stood at the intermission.

Dartmouth extended its lead to 35-0 on its first possession of the second half as Kyler threaded a needle between two defenders into the arms of Estrada for six points on the 13-yard connection.

Jacksonville’s lone points of the afternoon came on the ensuing drive that bridged the third and fourth quarters, lasting more than eight and a half minutes. Twice the Dolphins converted on 4th-and-long before Craige Saxton made a one-handed grab on a five-yard pass for a touchdown. The point after glanced off the left upright, however, and left Jacksonville with six points.

Dartmouth essentially ran out the clock over two drives, gobbling up nearly 11 minutes on the clock. Only a fumble inside the Dolphin 5 kept the Big Green from putting more points on the board.

The defense had a steady game with senior safety Ryan Roegge leading Dartmouth with seven tackles, while senior linebacker Nigel Alexander and sopho-more nickelback John Pupel each had five. All three had one of their tackles go for a loss, as did linemen Jackson Perry and Seth Walter.

The Big Green finished the game with 427 yards of offense while the Dolphins posted 294, more than 200 of which came after falling behind by the 28-0 score.

HANOVER, N.H. — Jared Gerbino completed 12-of-16 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns — all career highs — and the Dartmouth defense made four stops on the fourth down as the Big Green (2-0) was in control from the start and defeated visiting Colgate (0-5) in Dartmouth’s home opener. The victory was the 15th straight for the Green against a non-conference opponent, their longest such streak since the Ivy League began play in 1956.

The Big Green racked up 440 yards of offense with a balanced mix of rushing (175) and passing (265) with sophomore tight end Robbie Mangas needing just three catches to record the first 100-yard game of his career with 105 yards, the last a 34-yard touchdown grab.

Gerbino, mostly a wildcat quarterback during his Dartmouth career with over 1,000 rushing yards to his credit, already has posted personal highs passing the ball in a season after just two games. He completed his first 10 passes of the night, leading the Green on touchdown drives on each of their first three possessions.

But it was the defense that set the tone early when nose guard David Chalmers broke through the line on a 4th-and-1 play on the game’s first possession to stop the Colgate runner for a loss and turn the ball over on downs. Gerbino then took the offense 58 yards in seven plays, the last a 30-yard toss to Hunter Hagdorn for a touchdown not even six minutes into the contest.

Gerbino went right back to work on the next drive with the big play a 36-yard toss over the defense to Mangas into the red zone. Caylin Parker took it from there with a pair of 4-yard runs, the second of which he waltzed into the end zone for a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter.

Another defensive stop on fourth down — this time courtesy of a Jackson Perry sack at the Big Green 31 — led to the third Dartmouth touchdown drive in three tries. Two Gerbino tosses to Zack Bair gobbled up 20 yards, Parker picked up nine with a run and Drew Estrada hauled in a 40-yard bomb in the end zone for the six points. Connor Davis added

the extra point, and the Big Green enjoyed a 21-0 lead with 9:27 left in the half.

Although the Big Green could not go 4-for-4 on touchdown drives as punter Davis Brief made his first appearance of the season, Dartmouth got one last chance to score before the intermission. Perry and Niko Lalos sacked the Colgate quarterback on fourth down and jarred the ball loose with Naeem Morgan gobbling it up at the Dartmouth 41 with 44 seconds on the clock. Derek Kyler came on to run the two-minute offense and completed 4-of-6 throws to the Raider 22. On the final play of the half, Davis booted a 39-yard field goal through the uprights for a 24-0 lead at the break.

Colgate finally dented the scoreboard in the third quarter, but netted just three points after a drive that took just over half of the quarter. A 27-yard Chris Puzzi field goal thwarted the shutout.

Dartmouth answered right back, however, quickly moving 75 yards in just six plays, culminat-ing witih another long scoring strike from Gerbino. Mangas was on the receiving end from 34 yards out with 2:57 left in the third quarter.

The defense had one more stand in it, deny-ing Colgate after it reached the 1-yard line. Four plays later, the Big Green took over on downs, then proceeded to march 97 yards in 11 plays with Kyler at the helm. Keegan McHugh took the honor of making the 1-yard dive into the end zone for his first career touchdown, capping the scoring with 4:19 to play.

Perry led the stout Dartmouth defense with nine tackles and 1.5 sacks, while Jack Traynor and Isaiah Johnson each collected eight stops. Safety Ryan Roegge broke up three passes and would have had an acrobatic interception in the first half, but it was negated due to a roughing-the-passer penalty.

Despite the fact that Colgate held the ball for over 35 minutes, it managed just 281 yards of of-fense. Noah Rothman connected on only 13-of-30 throws for 130 yards while being sacked four times. Alex Mathews led the rushing attack with 74 yards on 19 carries.
