With a full day still ahead, we set off to explore Trogir, a traditional old town with cobbled streets, ancient buildings and a picturesque feel – rather like a miniature version of Split itself. Trogir was a lovely place to spend a day and well worth a visit. We took a mini walking tour to see as much as we could, stopping in the lovely old town square for a drink in the sunshine. Even though it was early October the sun was out and temperatures were mid-20s – a lovely contrast to our chilly English weather! After wandering around the pretty harbour it was off to our hotel, The Radisson Blu, around an hour-and-a-half’s drive away. Set right on the beach just 3km from Split’s city centre, the hotel is easily accessible by local bus or taxi, which are both very efficient and affordable. A relaxing dinner at the Radisson’s beach bar was a great way to end our first day, watching the sun go down over the coastline with a chilled glass of white wine. The following morning we were up early to visit Split’s ancient city centre, a walled UNESCO World Heritage Site full of beautiful architecture. During an informative walking tour we learned that the historic city was founded in 295AD by the Roman Emperor Diocletian, whose palace still remains within the city walls. Split’s city centre is a hive of activity with local markets, boutiques and cafés lining the cobbled streets. Stopping for a late lunch of fresh salad and a glass of Grappa (the national tipple) at a pavement café, we noticed a strong Italian influence on the menu with plenty of seafood listed in the majority of dishes – delicious! Next it was off to the Makarska Riviera, a pretty neighbouring area with a big open bay and a long seafront promenade. Easily reached by car or bus in around an hour, Makarska is an idyllic getaway with a real seaside feel and beautiful scenery all around, perfect for day trips. There were several dinner venues to choose from around the harbour area, all of which offered excellent value and variety. That evening we enjoyed a delicious fresh fish accompanied by a bottle of the local beer which was really light and refreshing. That afternoon we hit the beach and had a dip in the ocean (which was still warm, even in October!) before our final evening out. I fell in love with Hvar and would highly recommend a visit, particularly when twinned with either Split or Makarska, which we had also enjoyed so much.
