words expressed in the epistle to the Philippians chapter 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in

INTERVIEW
Interview with the new Life Orientation teacher: Mr. McCallum.
Mpho Mbulawa: What was your first impression of the school?
Mr. McCallum: When I first arrived at the school, my first impression was how peaceful the school was.
It brought a sense of serenity and tranquillity when first stepping on the holy grounds. The school is
aesthetically pleasing from its archaic architecture to the meticulous fine statues and wooden floors carrying
so much school history. The school truly leaves a huge impression.
Mpho Mbulawa: Were you nervous when you first arrived?
Mr. McCallum: I was extremely nervous. I thought I made a mistake because it was my first time teaching
high school students but fortunately after my first few periods with the students, all that nervousness
washed away.
Mpho Mbulawa: Why are you passionate about teaching?
Mr. McCallum: I love children, I love communicating with children, I love helping them and impacting
their lives in whatever way I can. I always try to make my classes fun and I provide my learners a space
where they can be free and express themselves.
Mpho Mbulawa: What benefits can be found at St Ursula’s?
Mr. McCallum: The school provides a small and intimate atmosphere, the teachers are extremely caring
towards their students, the atmosphere provided by the school is peaceful, allowing learners to focus on
themselves and their future. Many of the learners within St Ursula’s will agree that the school provides an
atmosphere where learners can easily connect with each other and form close bonds.
Mpho Mbulawa: Please briefly tell us about yourself.
Mr. McCallum: I have been married for twenty-seven years and I have three sons, I previously taught
at Maragon Ruimsig for seventeen years so teaching has always been a part of me.
Mpho Mbulawa: Where do you think the school will be in five to ten years?
Mr. McCallum: I truly believe this school is a gem, I believe it is an undiscovered gem within the West
Rand. It is a place that creates leaders, pioneers and visionaries. Our sports and culture is expanding and
our academics is soaring. I believe this school has the potential to be one of the best schools, not only
within the West Rand, but also within our country.

NEWS FROM THE PRIMARY SCHOOL
Our new afternoon clubs are up and running with lots of enthusiasm from both the
learners and the teachers involved.
Reading Club: The reading club had many children attending the first meeting, all bubbling
with excitement to dive in and have fun with books!
The Grade 2 - 4 group started reading The Dog’s Secret. They are now waiting
with bated breath for the next time they get together to see if Tracker, the lost
dog, will be found, thanks to the LOST DOG posters they created… watch this
space!
Gr 3’s, Ayanda and Kgathli,
engrossed in the story.
Art Club: Mrs Nys’s Art Club drew the masses for their first meeting this week. The Grade 1 -3’s gathered with much
excitement, crayons at the ready, to tackle their first project.
Welcome back to all the learners, parents and staff! We trust you had a relaxing break and are ready and raring to dive into
this final term.
Term 4 is going to be a very busy one with many events planned, so please keep an eye on your D6 communications for any
reminders and news updates.
We welcome all the Pre-school learners, parents and teachers to their new home at the Primary school. Our school grounds
are abuzz with all the little voices and we are so happy to have them here.
Senior phase parents, please remember that this is an exam term and your children need to start with exam preparation from
DAY ONE. Please help them to set up a study space, away from TV and cell phone distractions, and to get into a study routine
which will assist them in preparing for the end of the term.
We wish you all the best for this busy, final term. God bless.

NEWS FROM THE PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Children love playing with water, why not learn while doing it. Mrs
Fouchè and her class had a wonderful time seeing how the different
containers and amounts fit into each other, learning about
conversions from millilitres to litres.
BALLET TEA – SATURDAY, 9 NOVEMBER
Please keep this date free and look out for an invitation that will soon be coming home
with your daughter. More information to follow!
IMPORTANT NOTICE: CHANGE OF DATES!
Parents and Guardians, please note that it has been decided to move the concert date from
Saturday, 26 October to SATURDAY, 23 NOVEMBER, to give the children a little more time to
prepare.
The Grade R graduation ceremony will also take place on the same morning. More information
regarding the program for the day will be communicated soon.
THEME FOR THE WEEK 14 - 18 OCTOBER
All Grades – Birds
During the coming week, we will be learning about birds. We will talk about where they live, what they eat,
and about the many different varieties of birds that exist. If you have access to a bird book, it would be
wonderful to sit and page through it with your child, looking at the pictures and discussing the different birds
that have been so fascinatingly created by God.
There is a spectacular variety of shape and colour that makes up the bird species. It is almost impossible to
teach the children about them all.
THEME FOR THE WEEK 21 - 25
OCTOBER All Grades - Reptiles
During the week ahead, the children will learn about reptiles. It is usually with squeals of delight and awe that
children approach any reptile and most adults recoil. Children will eagerly move forward, to touch, feel and
hold these often-elusive creatures.
Reptiles are cold-blooded, and are covered in protective scales. They lay eggs and are born on land, and are virtually independent from birth. Crocodiles, snakes, lizards, chameleons, and various types of ‘dragons’, are some of the creatures that are part of the reptile species. If you are able to, we would encourage you to take your children to visit a pet store that specialises in reptiles. It is always beneficial for children to experience the topic of their school theme, in some way, outside of school, as this reinforces all that they have learned.
