A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3

My dear parish family, June is the month of the Sacred Heart. For many years now the Society of Jesus, better known as the Jesuits, through the work of the Apostleship of Prayer, has promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart. Associated with this devotion is the Sacred Heart image, always ringed with thorns, crowned with a cross, a visible scar recalling its being pierced by a spear as Jesus hung on the cross, flames atop the Heart, symbolic of our Lord’s burning love for us. The Apostleship of Prayer promotes the practice of making a Daily Offering, which is to say, beginning the day by saying a prayer with which we offer to God all our joys and sorrows, our thoughts, words, and deeds, our work and recreation, all we are and all we have. It used to be common among Catholics to use or hear the expression “Offer it up,” usually in time of trial: this headache or anxiety or sadness just won’t go away, so “Offer it up.” Grace Urbanski, Director of the Children’s Ministry at the Apostleship of Prayer, in a fine reflection on Jesus’ multiplication of the loaves and fishes, explains the meaning of this venerable saying. She recalls that in the miracle of the loaves and fishes, Jesus took something seemingly pa-thetic and inadequate to the task at hand and used it to satisfy thousands of hungry people. “This,” she writes, “is why ‘offer it up’ are three of the most powerful words I know.” When we offer Jesus anything in prayer, we can be confident that He’ll transform it for the benefit of many. We may not see the fruit of our offering, but knowing His power and wisdom and love, we trust He’ll bring great good out of our meager sorrow, joy, or work offered up to Him. Check out www.apostleshipofprayer.org, and think about making some sort of Morning Of-fering part of your days. There’s one of the cover of this bulletin, and you can find others on the Apostleship of Prayer website. And next time you’re feeling overwhelmed or wondering what it’s all about, offer it up in prayer, and know that God will transform and use what you’ve offered for the good of countless souls. With love and prayers Fr. Charles Fink

STEWARDSHIP FINANCIAL REPORT For the week of June 29, 2016

The Year of Mercy

In today’s First Reading and the Gospel we see God’s abundant mercy in action. Two sons are restored to life, two mothers are comforted, and their physical lives are restored. These readings remind us of the Spiritual Work of Mercy, Praying for the Dead. This excerpt is from Beautiful Mercy the book from our Book Group: “It is a great work of mercy we can extend to our de-ceased loved ones, to remember them with love and to pray with the words of St Paul, ‘[May God] who has began a good work in you…bring it to completion’ (Philippian1:6)” We pray for the souls in purgatory and that all souls see the face of God. Our Consolation Ministry helps families pre-pare their departed loved ones ’funeral litur-gy, this is also a way to pray for the dead. This ministry of comfort and peace is a beautiful way to live out the Spiritual works of Mercy. If you think you may be interested in being part of this ministry call the Rectory and speak to Loraine. One of the prayers we pray at the end of each decade of the Rosary is, O my Jesus, forgive us our sins; save us from the fires of hell and lead all souls to heaven especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Join us in pray-ing The Rosary in June on these dates: June 8, 16, 20, and 28.

New Book Discussion will be starting on June 8. Our group will be reading First Comes Love; Finding Your Family in the Church by Scott Hahn! To preor-der a book, call Beth at 363-2416 by June 3 or order from Amazon. All are welcome!

WHAT CATHOLICS BELIEVE; WHY THEY BELIEVE IT Introduction

To the unbeliever who fancies himself a man of reason, Catholicism is a tissue of superstition and ignorance. To the fundamentalist Christian, it is cor-rupted by centuries of non-biblical accretions. The media find in the Catholic Church a wonderful source of scandal and caricature. Even many Catholics seem to love hating their Church. What could be more fun at lunch or dinner or in casual conversation than reliving the horrors of growing up Catholic? Amazing, then, that such a pathetic institution can claim the allegiance of millions of otherwise intelligent people, produce the likes of Mother Teresa of Calcutta and John Paul II, comfort thousands in their need every day, be home to people of every race and nation, and survive two thousand years amidst the wreckage of countless fallen empires. Surely this strange creature, the Catholic Church, is worth scrutinizing. In the weeks to come, I will be examining some of the most commonly ex-pressed objections to the Church and the faith she professes. My hope is that those of you who believe will come away with a better understanding of our faith and of its depth, breadth, beauty, and cogency. Beyond this, I hope that you will share these short essays with your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers, should the opportunity to do so present itself. Especially if they are skeptics, but assuming they are fair-minded, I think they will come to realize that, even if they cannot quite accept everything the Church stands for, nevertheless Catholicism is not the mass of foolishness it is often made out to be. Next week, in fact for the next month or so, we will take a look at why we believe in God, at some of the objections to such belief, and what can be said in answer to those objections. I hope you will come along for the ride. You are in for a fascinating and stimulating journey.

I said “being “ a catechist, because it is to do with life. A person guides another towards Jesus through

their words, life and testimony. “Being” a catechist re-quires love, an ever stronger love for Christ, love for his holy people. And this love necessarily begins

A little humor from Father Fink

Not what we are looking for in the collection basket.

On the weekend of June 11-12, the Rev. Matthew Considine, S.M.M. of the Montfort Missionaries will be at Our Lady of Snow to preach for the an-nual Mission Cooperative Collection. The Montfort Missionaries are an international community of religious priests and brothers. In addition to ministries in the Diocese of Hartford, Rockville Centre and Brooklyn, their members serve in over 30 countries around the world. They have been assigned this year by the Diocese to speak on behalf of the Church’s missionary activ-ity and seek your assistance. Your generosity will enable them to continue their direct efforts at evangelization and also in the formation of priests and religious.
