A New Adult Education Class, “Solutions to
Homelessness” will begin on January 6th.
Amy Besola, Brocc and Lynne Snyder will
facilitate the class. We hope to have leaders
from our community working to solve this
pervasive issue come and share. Please
consider dropping off warm coats, hats and
gloves at POM and pray for those sleeping outside in this cold, rainy
and wintery weather. Mark your calendars and join in the conversation
in January.
On January 28th, the Annual Meeting will be held
in the Sanctuary following morning worship.
Reports will be received from the Pastors, Elders,
Deacons and small groups. The 2017 year-end
financials and 2018 Budget will be presented. We
will also honor those who have entered eternal rest
during 2017. Plan to attend to rejoice in the work of
the Lord through Calvary Presbyterian Church.

Have you ever heard of celebrating “Good Riddance Day”? It is celebrated around New Year’s Day. Participants write down unpleasant, painful, or embarrassing memories from the past year and throw them into an industrial-strength shredder. Or if you prefer, you can also take a sledge hammer and smash your good riddance item, like a cell phone, for instance. The U.S. event is based after a Latin American
tradition in which New Year's revelers stuffed dolls with objects representing bad memories before setting them on fire. One of the Good Riddance Day organizers said, "It really is this need we have, even when the world is crazy, to say, 'You know what? I'm gonna let go of the things that have been dragging me down and going to look forward with a sense of hope and the possibility of change. Either for myself personally or the world.' As we reflect on the year past, perhaps we have regrets, unfinished business, or failure to which we might
want to say ‘good riddance’. The Apostle Paul wrote:
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal
to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:14).
In 2017 the elders and deacons collaborated on a new Mission Statement for Calvary:
“To embrace our Christian faith and encourage all generations
into a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ.”
We have not always done this in the past, but if Calvary wants to grow and thrive for another 125 years on
the Plateau, we need to find creative ways to live into this mission. Please be praying for the Youth Ministry
Task Force which is forming to carry on our senior high group and pray for/consider/research new ways of
fulfilling our mission.
Please pray for the formation of a new “Long Range Planning Team” that will begin first with an assessment
of the property, but eventually move on to consider other areas of church life.
Please pray for our newly elected elders and deacons who will be installed this month, and those whose
service is ongoing. They need God’s guidance to fulfill their calling.
Please plan to join us for the Annual Congregational Meeting on January 28th, immediately following
worship, as we look back—not to say “good riddance” but to say “Praise our faithful God, from whom all
blessings flow!”

The Christian Education and Church Life Teams provided the light lunch honoring the Luchi
Family after worship and Elders provided a Christmas Dinner for the Senior High Youth
Group on December 17.
Elder Dan Grigsby concluded his position as Clerk of Session on December 31. He and Debi
will be moving to Virginia soon after the New Year. We wish them well on their journey and for God’s
blessing in closing down their home here and opening their new one closer to their children and
grandchildren.
Likewise on December 31 Elder Jodine Burke completed two terms (6 years) of service on Session. She
faithfully gave of her time and talents chairing Personnel Ministry and the Finance Ministry Teams,
significant for sure. Her guiding desire: what was best for Calvary, leaving “big shoes to fill.”
Church Life Ministry Team says, “Thank you” to the congregation for helping them celebrate monthly
during 2017 with birthday and anniversary cake. They will be providing other ways in honoring special days
in 2018. Surprises in store!
SAVE THESE DATES - The six Wednesdays of Lent, beginning on February 14 to March 21 for the always
favorite Lenten Soup Suppers in the Fellowship Hall starting at 5:30 P.M. Sign-up sheets will be available
mid-January on the Welcome Table in the Narthex.
Newly elected leaders for Calvary will be Ordained and Installed on Sunday, January 7 & 14 during
the 9:30 A.M. service.
Elders for a 2-year term, Class of 2019: Dick Johnson and Cherie Murchie, Clerk of Session
Elders for a 3-year term, Class of 2020: Mark Delmarter, Jackie McDonnell and Brocc Snyder
Deacons for a 3-year term, Class of 2020: Linda Eastwood and Carol Reed.
The Nominating Committee will be meeting in January to fill the open positions of one Deacon, one-year term, and 2
Deacons for a 2-year term. Please be in prayer for God’s call to these positions. The Nominating Committee members
are Al Reiter, Joan Johnson, Sara Griggs, Heidi Russell and Pastor Lynell.

Please share some of your best recipes with us. Recipes may be submitted online
(See Instructions Below), via email, or on paper. Please include a ‘Note’ to include
information such as why the recipe is a favorite, did a special person give you the
recipe or did you find it in a magazine or cookbook, or is there a particular time of
year or celebration when you usually make the recipe, etc. that will make the
cookbook more interesting. We will have opportunities to pre-order books
sometime after the New Year. The cookbooks should be ready to print in April and available in June.
Although we have requested certain types of recipes during certain months you may submit recipes in any
category (including This & That) at any time.

Session Highlights from the December 11th Meeting. Some of the following items were presented and if needed, approved: Accepted written reports from staff and ministry teams. Adopted the 2018 Budget of $246,285.00 which will be presented in detail
at the Congregational meeting on January 28. Approved the roll-over of 2017 study leave into 2018 for Pastor Lynell Caudillo. Adopted the updated Children, Youth and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy. Approved the formation of a Task Force for Calvary Youth Ministries. Approved the development for a Long-Range planning committee for facility maintenance and
improvement.

Who Wrote the Book of Love?
“I wonder, wonder, who, who-oo-ooh, who, who wrote the book of love?” That’s the first line of an old song,
but most likely not asking about the Bible.
There are about 40 authors accredited with writing the books of the Bible. You’re likely familiar with the Apostle Paul who wrote
at least 14 of the books of the New Testament and John who wrote five other New Testament books. Did you know that Moses
was the author of the first 5 books of the Old Testament, and possibly Job as well? Apparently, Job is a bit of a mystery. Nobody
knows for sure who wrote Job or when, but it is believed to be the oldest, written even before Genesis in 1445 BC.
In days of long ago, there were no books or written stories, but there were great storytellers who passed the stories down from
generation to generation. The stories were widely known, and storytellers were not allowed to embellish or make any changes.
The stories told of their ancestors—their heritage, their accomplishments, their travels, and even their deaths.
As we begin a new year, perhaps it’s time to tell your own story or write it down. Everyone has unique experiences, hopes,
dreams, and it’s fascinating to learn about the lives of the people you see in the pews next to you each Sunday. There’s still room
in the Lenten Devotional for several more devotions written by our own congregation. The deadline has been extended, but time
is drawing nearer to publication. The booklets will be made available at the beginning of Lent. Please participate. More
information is on the welcome table in the narthex.
Another line from the Book of Love song ponders: “Was it someone from above?” It makes you think;
how did 40 diverse strangers write such a perfectly harmonious book we call The Bible? The answer is
simple…God’s hands molded the words together. Likewise, God’s hands have shaped your lives and the
lessons you’ve learned are meant to be shared.
If you are considering providing flowers for any upcoming Sunday in 2018, please take a
moment to sign-up in the Flower Notebook on the Welcome Table in the church Lobby. Look
for a date that you can share arrangements for a loved one’s birthday, wedding anniversary,
memorial remembrance, or traditional holidays throughout the year. Your special occasion
will be noted in the weekly bulletins. Thank you!

Will the Youth Group continue? YES! Will it “look” the same as it has in the past? Probably not. . .but this is a new year, which will
reflect some new changes. The Session has approved the formation of a Youth Ministry Task Force—comprised of a variety of
people, including some youth to meet regularly in the new year. This group will be involved in the following tasks:
1 - Commit to pray daily for our youth, and for God’s guidance as we discern God’s will regarding the future of youth ministry at
CPC. Be open to what God will do in and through us with no preconceived notions of what the outcome will be.
2 - Commit to participate in a once monthly gathering of the Task Force and as a task force member agree to come to the meetings
prepared. Assignments may be given to members to research various aspects of Youth Ministry, etc. We may read and discuss a
book together. Some are already reading Sustainable Youth Ministry by DeVries.
3 - Commit to participate at least once a month in the Sunday evening youth group meeting from 6:30-8:30 P.M.
4 - Other activities as determined by the Task Force.
So. . .Senior High Youth Group will continue meeting weekly on Sundays starting at 6:30. The goal is to serve this group and
“hang in there with them” through June, for sure, and hopefully beyond that.
The Middle School and 3-4-5 Groups will be meeting perhaps monthly or more often depending on interest and leadership.
What can YOU do to help? PRAY! EVERYONE CAN DO THIS!
1– Pray that God will guide and bring new leadership who love youth and commit to share Jesus with them!
2—Check the weekly bulletin—there will be opportunities to help supply food for a meal or help out as a drive for an activity.
3—Continue to support the Blessing Box! The youth group and Deacons will monitor and re-supply the box with your donations.
We are thankful for the youth who come to Calvary—they are bright, creative, committed to Christ! It is our responsibility to care
for and disciple them in their faith journeys. We intend to do just that, with your prayers and practical help.

Volunteer Nursery Care Coordinator needed beginning this
month! There still will be paid helpers, but we need an adult
to coordinate their schedules and to also recruit one adult
volunteer to be available to assist each Sunday on a rotating
basis. Training materials and guidelines provided. If you are

Many thanks from the Blanket Card Committee for all your support during this 25th year of the project! A total of $1,955.00 was raised, every penny of which will go to Church

New Class Begins! “By HeART & Hand” Bible Journaling group is forming on Thursday,
January 25 at 7 P.M. in Calvary’s Fellowship Hall and plans to meet monthly throughout
2018. If you are interested in learning how to have scripture “stick” for you, then this
combination of drawing and/or brush work, fonts, and color may be just what you are
looking for to knowing His Word better. During these monthly gatherings you will learn
techniques on how to bring scripture to life in your Bible. No previous artistic ability is
necessary, God will inspire your creations!
This group is open to anyone in the community, so invite your friends to join you. For the first session, just
bring your own beverage, a couple of sharp pencils and 10 sheets of plan white bond paper with you. This
group will be hosted by Megan Brech and Eva Dietz. (Sorry, no child care available.)

Calvary will be the check-in point for POM Winter Shelter from Dec. 1 - Feb. 28, 2018 from 6:30-7:15 P.M. using the NE classroom of our CE Building. A van will transport those in need to various host churches.
Calvary continues to fill up the Enumclaw Food Bank Basket in the Narthex with the “ITEMS OF THE
MONTH”. At the end of each month all the items collected will be taken to the food bank located in the City
of Enumclaw building next to the Senior Center on Cole Street.
By supporting this project we are celebrating our Legacy of Serving Others in God’s Name.

From The Eagle’s Nest
I spent some time reflecting upon 2017 and what would be some good news to share. Yes, we had some ups and some downs. We can choose to evaluate the “downs” and try to learn from them. We can also choose to look at what worked well and take advantage of our strengths.
The highlights of 2017, at least for me, were the 125th Anniversary events. If I try to look at what made them so special, a few thoughts come to mind: music, connections, and good food. We are always blessed to have such a wonderful music department. That is true all year round, not just this last year. I appreciated the Cantata, the jazz ensemble and the many fine anthems and bells music. In each of the special events, people really connected with one another. It was also nice to see folks who came back for our Homecoming. And last, but not least, the good food. I have to admit coffee and food are motivators for me and probably for most of us.
This brings me to the point of my article: Let’s Toot Our Horn. I think we could make more use of our Calvary website and Facebook page. If we use photos from events to help advertise future happenings, it would likely bring in others. Another suggestion would be to write a short piece on something that you had particularly enjoyed. Then we could put this on those websites to let others know what we have to offer. We already have some of this, but I think we could add more.
One other thing comes to mind. I do not think we are doing much related to inviting others to come either to church services or to our special events. The one exception was the Fashion Show. I did see other ladies there because they came with a Calvary member. If we all have had good times at Calvary, it is my guess that others would as well.
We have a lot to offer. So let’s make a new year’s resolution to TOOT OUR HORNS
