Psalm 25:1-10 P To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. C O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. P Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame; they shall be ashamed who are wantonly

treacherous. C Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. P Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the

day long. C Remember your mercy, O LORD, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. P Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love

remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O LORD! C Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. P He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. C All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his

covenant and his testimonies.

LITURGY NOTATIONS

Prelude Music helps draw us into an attitude of prayer and praise. Processional Hymn We are a "singing church," so we follow the advice of the apostle Paul to teach and admonish "one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord" (Colossians 3:16). This hymn may be one of praise, prayer, or reflection on the season of the church year.

Invocation P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

Confession of Sins and Absolution Matthew 16:25; Jeremiah 15:19 P Jesus said, “Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will

find it.” Let us empty ourselves of our fears and failures, confessing our sins and asking God to fill us with His peace.

C Far be it, O Lord, that I should not deny myself, take up my cross, and follow You. By Your cross and resurrection give to me Your forgiveness and assurance of new life by Your grace. Sin consumes me, for I am sinful from birth. Take away my selfish desires and fill me with Your love. Help me proclaim Your love in loving service to others. Amen.

P Thus says the Lord, “If you return, I will restore you.” Upon this your confession, I as a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Song of Praise “10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)” J Myrin & M Redmam

Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul, Worship His holy name, Sing like never before, O my soul, I'll worship Your holy name

The sun comes up it's a new day dawning It's time to sing Your song again Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me Let me be singing when the evening comes

Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul, Worship His holy name, Sing like never before, O my soul, I'll worship Your holy name

You're rich in love and You're slow to anger Your name is great and Your heart is kind For all Your goodness I will keep on singing Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul, Worship His holy name, Sing like never before, O my soul, I'll worship Your holy name

And on that day when my strength is failing The end draws near and my time has come Still my soul will sing Your praise unending Ten thousand years and then forevermore

Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul, Worship His holy name, Sing like never before, O my soul, I'll worship Your holy name (Repeat)

Worship Your holy name, Lord I’ll worship Your holy name

Invocation From the Latin “to call upon.” The spoken words at the beginning of the service remind us of our Baptism Confession We examine ourselves and publicly confess our sins. Such a confession at the beginning of the service provides a climate of acceptance. In spite of our sins, we are accepted by God, and in turn we can accept each other. *I John 1:8-10 [Rom. 7:14-8:4] Absolution Christ said to his disciples, "If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven"*. The pastor speaks for God and announces God's cleansing forgiveness to those who made confession. *John 20:23.

Old Testament Reading Genesis 12:1-7 Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” So Abram went, as the LORD had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God!

Epistle Reading 2 Corinthians 8:1-7, 9:6-11 We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own free will, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints— and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. Accordingly, we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace. But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also… The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for all your generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.

L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God!

Gospel Reading Mark 10:35-45

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 10th chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord.

And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to [Jesus] and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon “Shaped by Jesus toward: Joyful Service and Generous Giving”

Verse 2 If you cannot speak like angels, If you cannot preach like Paul, You can tell the love of Jesus, You can say He died for all. If you cannot rouse the wicked, With the Judgement's dread alarms, You can lead the little children, To the Savior's waiting arms.

“This Life therefore is not righteousness, but growth in righteousness, not health, but healing, not being but becoming, not rest but exercise.

We are not yet what we shall be, but we are growing toward it, the process is not yet finished.”

-Martin Luther

Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of the Church P Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their

The Apostles’ Creed Written by St. Ambrose in about 390 AD in honor of the 12 Apostles and their confession of faith. Prayer of the Church Since God’s people are called to ‘pray without ceasing’ (1 Thess. 5:17), we take this time to collect all our prayers to pray with one heart and mind as the people of God. Offering Our words reflect the words God spoke to Abraham, “I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” (Genesis 12:2)

Offering Music “Jesus Paid It All” I hear the Savior say, Thy strength indeed is small Child of weakness watch and pray, Find in Me thine all in all

Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow

Lord now indeed I find, Thy pow'r and Thine alone Can change the leper's spots, And melt the heart of stone

Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow

And when before the throne, I stand in Him complete Jesus died my soul to save, My lips shall still repeat

Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow

Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow, He washed it white as snow, He washed it white as snow

Oh praise the One Who paid my debt, And raised this life up from the dead (REAPET 6X) Jesus.

A Thank you, Lord, for blessing us so that we may be a blessing to others.

+ SACRAMENT +

P The Lord who called us in our Baptism and summoned us in His Word to follow where He leads now invites us to His supper. We gather at His table, assured of His presence and grateful for His sacrifice. Christ comes to us in the bread and wine. We are forgiven and strengthened for service.

C Amen.

Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9–13)

P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Communion Confession P The Lord’s Supper is God’s gift for Christians who are properly instructed. (1 Cor. 10:17; Act

2:42) In communing, we want people to receive Christ’s body and blood for their good. (1 Cor. 11:23-32) This means that as you come to the Lord’s Table you affirm with each communicant that Jesus is your Savior and Lord; and with Lutheran Christians you confess:

C I recognize and confess that I am a sinner. I repent of my sin and ask God’s forgiveness. C I believe that Jesus Christ is my only Lord and Savior from sin, Satan and death. C I believe that the risen Christ is really present in the Sacrament and, under the form of the

bread and wine, I receive His true body and blood for the forgiveness of my sin and the strengthening of my faith and life. (Augsburg Confession – Article X)

LITURGY NOTATIONS

Agnus Dei Agnus Dei is a Latin phrase meaning "Lamb of God." John the Baptist spoke these words as he pointed to Jesus coming toward him (John 1:29). As Christ comes to us in the Holy Supper, we recognize him as the Lamb of God sacrificed for us to free us from the bondage of sin and death. * John 1:29; Is. 53:7. Prayer of Thanks Once again, we express our appreciation to our gracious God for giving us this Holy Meal through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. * Pss. 107: Benediction The blessing spoken by the pastor is the Aaronic benediction, the blessing God first gave to Aaron and the other priests to speak to the people of Israel. Jesus Christ, our High Priest, has come to us in a special way through this Holy Meal. The blessing is God's promise that Christ will go with us as we leave the church and return to the world to serve Him. We say "Amen" to affirm the blessing; "So be it -- it is true!" * Numbers 6:23-27.

Journey of DiscipleshipDon’t think of this as your Spiritual GPA, think of it as your Spiritual GPS. You are not being graded by God. And you are on a journey of faith. It only makes sense to check in, at least occasionally, to see where you have been and where you are going.

If your compasses show positive movement forward, don’t get complacent or proud. Remember it’s about what Jesus is doing in your life. Give Him the glory!

If your compasses show you’re kind of stuck or moving in the wrong direction, don’t despair. Remember it’s about what Jesus is doing in your life. Keep your eyes on His promises and see what He is going to do next!

This is just the next small step on a life-long journey of discipleship, a journey we’re on together!

Review your GPS results with someone who can point you back to Jesus and His love for you. In that discipling relationship, ask:

What’s Jesus speaking into my life?

What response is Jesus shaping in me?

What promise from Jesus am I holding onto?
