Harry was meticulous about routine and stuck to a methodical program that included a good balance of work, family, education and health. When the SABC introduced the SABC TV Race in the 1970’s Harry decided this was for him and that is where he started his runni ng career. The Chapman’s were transferred back to Durban in late 1970’s and settled in Westville. Harry joined Westville Athletic Club a nd started train- ing for the Comrades and completed his first in 1982. He completed 10 Comrades and earned his green number in 1992. Harry was elected onto the Westville Athletic Club Committee in 1983 and filled numerous positions before becoming Chairman in 1986 and again in 1987. It was at this time in the clubs history that our own club house was acquired and Harry was one of the committee that spent many hours in securing the premises. He was then elected as the first Chairman in these premises. Harry was always passionate about what he did and led the team in planning and extending the club that we had acquired to meet the then needs of the growing club. One of Harry’s other passions was that of communication and he ensured that the newsletter, in those days WESTLINK, was produ ced and posted out timeously. Remember that email and the internet was only in its infancy then. Harry was dedicated to the Westville Athletic Club and played a huge role in its development and growth. Westville Athletic Club and running was now well entrenched into the Chapman family and Pat ran her first Comrades in 1988. She also then served on the committee for three years 1990 1993. Pat & Harry decided that they would also move to New Zealand and immigrated in early 2013 to Auckland, and settled close to Julie and her family. IN MEMORY OF Harry James Chapman

Past Chairman of Westville Athletic Club 25th May 1940 to 8th June 2016

Harry was born and educated in Durban but relocated to Johannesburg to further his career in the 1960’s. He married Pat and later settled in Boksburg and had three children, Warren, Julie and Glenn.

Harry was meticulous about routine and stuck to a methodical program that included a good balance of work, family, education and health. When the SABC introduced the SABC TV Race in the 1970’s Harry decided this was for him and that is where he started his running career.

The Chapman’s were transferred back to Durban in late 1970’s and settled in Westville. Harry joined Westville Athletic Club and started train-ing for the Comrades and completed his first in 1982.

One of Harry’s other passions was that of communication and he ensured that the newsletter, in those days WESTLINK, was produced and posted out timeously. Remember that email and the internet was only in its infancy then.

Harry was dedicated to the Westville Athletic Club and played a huge role in its development and growth.

Westville Athletic Club and running was now well entrenched into the Chapman family and Pat ran her first Comrades in 1988. She also then served on the committee for three years 1990 – 1993.

The Chapman children grew up and the boys moved to the UK and Julie went to New Zealand. Pat & Harry decided that they would also move to New Zealand and immigrated in early 2013 to Auckland, and settled close to Julie and her family.

They adapted to the New Zealand life style and were very happy especially as they lived close to their grandchildren. Pat & Harry returned from a holiday to the UK in mid May 2016 which included Glenn’s graduation. Harry celebrated his 76th birthday on 25 May 2016.

Sadly, Harry had a stroke at home on the 8th June 2016 and did not recover.

A message from Martin Erasmus: I had a business trip to Sweden last week and it coincided with the Stockholm Marathon. I gave Comrades a miss as I have already done 12 and to be able to run an international marathon is always a privi lege - it was a toss- up- Comrades was on the 29 th of May and Stockholm 6 days later - doing both was considered… but hey, that would be madness. So after a few days of training runs in beautiful Swedish sunshine and super long days my boss (from Toreboda in Sweden) and I completed the marathon in 3:56. It was a fun day, very well organised and announcers even made mention of the Comrades as some top Swedish runners ran (Comrades) this year and were interviewed about our iconic Ultra - the lady that came 3 rd chatted about her run with loads of people l istening… who knows how many more international runners will be tempted.
