Raymond Cattell was born on 20 March1905, in Hilltop, West Bromwich, a small
town in England, where his father's familywas involved in inventing new parts forengines, automobiles, and othermachines.
He entered the field of psychology almostagainst his own better judgment.After working in a hospital during WW I, hedecided that understanding humanbehavior and interaction is the only way toget beyond the irrationality of the times .

While a graduate student at LondonUniversity, he was hired as a researchassistant to Charles Spearman.Cattell theorized the existence of fluidand crystallized intelligences to explainhuman cognitive ability, and authoredthe Culture Fair Intelligence Test tominimize the bias of written language
and cultural background inintelligence testing.

One of the most important results of
Cattell's application of factor analysiswas his discovery of 16 factors underlyinghuman personality. He called thesefactors "source traits" because hebelieved they provide the underlyingsource for the surface behaviors we thinkof as personality. This theory ofpersonality factors and the instrumentused to measure them are knownrespectively as the 16 personality factormodel and the 16PF Questionnaire .
