SWAP MEET April 22nd This, our fourth swap meet promises to be the biggest and best yet! Jim

Werner will provide us details during the meeting with special thanks to Bruce Domeck for the venue BASH UPDATE Old saying, “Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.” I don’t know much about

fruit flies but I know that June 3rd is only a half a dozen weeks away! I never realized how much prep

work and the size of the team necessary for a successful event until I became involved in it this year. Thankfully, Alice Verginia, Leo, Danny, Sylvia, Russell, Greg Bowman, Jim Werner, Mike Schneiger, Jim Lay and Don Minnche came forword and all is going well. Expect an update during the May 2017 meeting as we are of course requesting the indespensible services of Jim French and the BSCC Ladies Club supporting the surrounding Gazibo Services. See you Thursday! Gary Rumrill [email protected] (502) 239-6366

05a. ASK MR. BENTWRENCH

Ask Mr. Bentwrench 1) Plug wires - I need a comma and a space between '...degrades originals, aftermarket sets... 2) My closing blue links all got joined. I guess just throw in a space between them to break them out. kinda obvious. Dear Mr. Bentwrench – It’s already another spring and time for my annual tune-up. Figuring on a new set of points and a condenser and of course a new set of plugs. Might even get that cap and rotor too I found on sale too. After all, it’s already been 1,000 miles since my last tune-up and it’s running a bit rough again. Did I miss

anything? – Hit & Miss Dear Hit & Miss – Yeah, about 40 years of technological advances! What you’re ready for is a complete

Electronic Ignition Make Over. Electronic ‘breakerless’ ignitions replace traditional points in our older cars and upgrade the later OEM Lucas

electronics especially for reliability. Basically, just simple electronic trigger switch mechanisms with more consistency and precision than mechanical points with their chronically inconsistent gaps, fatiguing condensers and a propensity to sometimes float at high RPM. The advantage gained is a consistently better dwell that allows the coil sufficient time to fully saturate before the more precise trigger event to collapse the coil’s

primary field. It’s actually this critical field collapse that triggers the magical jump up in voltage from the coil’s saturated ‘primary’ low voltage (12v) windings to the coil’s ‘secondary’ high voltage (15-45kv) windings that instantaneously shorts to any ground… but with any luck, across a plug gap with a strong, bright, crisp spark.

Well, that’s the theoretical design goal anyway! Of course, this is key to top performance from idle to red line. There are two types. The most common, affordable and easiest to retrofit is the magnetic type. There are optical types too that use a slotted rotor disc that operates much like a camera shutter and are preferred by the hot track car and bike crowd but takes some fitting and start at about 3x the price! Two popular brands for the basic magnetic style triggers are Pertronix (US) and AccuSpark (UK). The Pertronix basic kit probably because they are US based and have one to fit practically ANYTHING for about $75 and installs easily and in under an hour and with only one beer! The basic AccuSpark trigger can be found for a bit less and both vendors also offers a complete line of complementary ignition system upgrades from rotors, caps, distributors, coils, wires and even plugs and all well priced in various prepackaged combinations. They should have something to fit all the most popular makes and models. Here is a bit about rotors. Off the shelf parts house rotors today are all now just cheap Chinese plastic FULL of carbon black with poor metal work to boot. Carbon is conductive and can promote ‘tracking’ in the circuit.

Today, spend the extra bucks on a quality, carbon free RED rotor. For the same reasons, watch out for too cheap Chinese distributor caps too! Are “Sport Coils” worth it? Yes, because usually they are just simply better made and with more internal windings. Specifically, many are usually fully ‘potted’ in epoxy for severe duty heat and vibration and with a typical ‘40,000 Volt’ (claimed) output that is MORE than enough for any compression ratio up to 12:1. There are many hot looking ‘sport coils’ to choose from that are just fine for us at very reasonable prices. Some even

look dead stock for the show car guys. If you still have your original, stock, oil filled coil, its old and tired. Change it out!

Page 6: 16 - 12 DEC 2016 BSCC NEWSLETTER NF...Announcement: Charles and Alice Curnick announced that their cabin in Gatlinburg, TN did not sustain any damage in the devastating wildfires that

05b. ASK MR. BENTWRENCH continued Are fancy plug wires all just marketing ‘voodoo’? No, although simple replacement wires are completely

serviceable and would probably make a noticeable improvement over anybody’s old and degraded originals aftermarket sets, offer modern technology with superior insulation and more advanced cores. Besides, they LOOK faster already in the oversized diameters and in all the cool colors! The debate about spark plug choice is about as hotly debated as choice of oil so I won’t say much. Choose

your favorite name brand within your specified heat range in a ‘first line’ grade from a real parts house over ‘second line’ plugs made for Walmart. I’m REALLY liking the new iridium’s as the sumbitches still look like new after 100,000 miles! If you can find them in your size, they will probably be the last set of plugs you will ever put in your little British runny. Depending upon the current condition of your engine and your use or abuse, feel free to bump the heat rating up/down as needed to match your specific state of tune. Start with one step hotter to help cover up pesky oily plug problems and definitely one step colder if you are reading high heat signs on your plug tips. Nobody wants to hole a piston! However, it is important to note that the number systems going up or down for hotter/colder does differ between brands so get it right! Nobody gives a second thought about their distributor… but should! Our original Lucas early type 22D through the common (points) 24D/25D to the late (electronic) 45D all wear very poorly and quickly. Typically, at the bronze shaft bushing causing some WILD variations in dynamic timing throughout the entire RPM range and we’re talking as much as 8-10° +/- here! Kinda defeats the purpose of having a full complement of perfectly matched trick ignition components when the distributor shaft is out taking a walk! Fortunately, aftermarket replacements already with electronic triggers, red rotors and quality caps fitted can be had for right at $100 shipped from AccuSpark. If you’re still running an original, even with ‘low miles’, a new electronic distributor

package should probably be on the top of your short list. In summary, I believe most of all our cars here would benefit from a complete electronic ignition make over. For example, complete package deals from AccuSpark are readily available that include a complete brand new electronic distributor, ‘sport’ coil, premium plug wires and fancy plugs and all usually found on ebay.UK for well under $200USD shipped for any car! This strikes me as a very solid bang for the buck for any of our old cars… and just in time for another great driving season! For further study and applications, see

Pertronix at http://pertronix.com/ , AccuSpark at http://www.accuspark.co.uk/ & maybe even take a peek at C5 Ignitions optical race designs at

http://www.c5ignitions.com/c5-technology.html

If I don’t know the answer… I just make one up!

10 TRIUMPH SPITFIRE FOR SALE: SOLD

Purchased by Russell Mills Batch Low Number 700 Mr. Werner. I found this group on FB and was intrigued. I moved to Salem IN about 15 years ago. My wife and I brought

our humble project car ('62 Spitfire) with us. Unfortunately, it has remained garaged ever since. I suspect that you may

have some Triumph folks in your group. I'm not trying to sell the car. My main interest is to find it a home where it can

be taken care of, as it is the earliest serial number that I have ever seen on a Spit. Perhaps you could put me in touch with
