FROM THE RECTOR 15 June 2014 Dear Friends, The gospel for Trinity Sunday this year gives us a glimpse into the mystery of God and his plan for us: ‘God loved the world so much that that he sent his only Son…’ We must go back to the deep life of God if we are to grasp what the love of the Father for human beings brings

about: eternal life for those who believe in Jesus Christ. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS Baptism: We welcome James Horsley and Penelope Bolger into the family of the Church through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at 2:30pm today. Please pray for James and Penelope and their parents and godparents, as they rejoice in sharing with us the Christian faith. Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: Many organists around the world today will play J S Bach’s famous St Anne’s Fugue as a voluntary. Bach’s fugue, which was included in one of Bach’s only published volumes of music, is a triple fugue, with three themes, in three sections: particularly appropriate for Trinity Sunday. The first fugue subject, slow and majestic, has been equated with God, the Almighty Father, and the second, fast and intangible, represents the Holy Ghost. The final fugal subject mixes elements from each, and is a vision of Jesus Christ. The reappearance of the original fugal theme in the third section (in the pedals) is one of the most triumphant moments in all of Bach’s works, and one of greatest moments in any music ever. The name ‘St Anne’ was added to the fugue following the circumstantial (and entirely accidental) similarity between the first fugue subject and the hymn tune ‘St Anne’ most often associated with the text ‘O God, our help in ages past’.

Mothers’ Union (MU): The next meeting on Wednesday 18 June following the 10:00am Eucharist and a cuppa, will hear from Rhonda Speer about her recent trip to Canada. All Welcome! For information, please speak with Deacon Sandra or Margaret Winters. St John’s Pins'n'Needles Group meets next on Tuesday 24 June, 9:30am to 12:30pm in the hall. For information, please speak with Pam Fisher (9939 6330) or Heather Andrews (9971 6132). School Holiday Arrangements: St John’s weekday ministries will be in recess over the school holidays from Monday 30 June to Friday 11 July, including children’s and young people’s activities, and Wednesday Bible Studies. A well-earned break and opportunity to refresh for our many ministry leaders!

services (to include Godly Play at 10:00am). • Deacon Jenny will take the Wednesday Services and look after any

funerals, however, there will be no other weekday services in the holidays; • There will be no evening service on Sunday 6 July. Tom Edwards will sing

Evensong on 13 July.
