From Friday 15 to Sunday 24 June, join us over ten days for Portsmouth’s most exciting arts and cultural experiences this summer. This year we celebrate the theme of FREEDOM, marking the centenary of women’s suffrage and the 100th birthday of Nelson Mandela. We explore ideas of creative freedom in a wide-ranging programme of music, theatre, talks and film and so much more.We are particularly excited to welcome the musical talents of O Duo, The Tallis Scholars and award-winning folk group RURA.We also have a superb line-up of speakers, including Peter Tatchell, Philip Hoare, Henry Hemming and Diane Atkinson. As ever, there will be novel experiences on offer: why not free your inhibitions by learning to run backwards with Retro Running, or make your own bid for freedom from our specially designed Escape Room? With over a hundred events we hope that all festival-goers enjoy an inspiring and liberating ten days in this year`s Portsmouth Festivities programme. We are hugely grateful to our sponsors, creative partners, partner venues, performers and volunteers for all their support. Of course, big thanks to all of you who attend and support our offering to the city. We look forward to seeing you!

An experienced broadcaster, curator and filmmaker, he is Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Southampton, and curator of the Moby-Dick Big Read. Philip is obsessed with the sea. He swims in it every day - winter and summer. We mark the end of the 2018 Festivities with a performance of Stravinsky’s Mass. He wrote ‘I wanted my Mass to be used liturgically; an outright impossibility as far as the Russian Church was concerned, as Orthodox tradition proscribes musical instruments in its services.’ And so, Stravinsky’s Mass demonstrates freedom of expression, freedom of language and freedom of faith.
