15 Years of BlessingsMission in Uganda Celebrates AnniversaryCelebrating the fifteenth anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Uganda recalls memories of events the SNDs shared during these years. Sisters Mary Janet Stamm and Delrita Glaser from the Covington province, and Sisters Jane Marie McHugh and Margaret Mary Scott from the California province arrived in Uganda on July 13, 1995. Their letters and e-mails preserve details of their experiences in Uganda. This issue of The Pulse shares some highlights of that correspondence.

FIRST WEEKSThe sisters’ first days in Uganda were spent in Kampala. When they arrived in Buseesa, only three sections of the rectangular compound were completed. Two sisters slept in storage rooms and two in guest bedrooms. The actual building took over a year and a half to complete. Sister Mary Delrita wrote, “I swept and swept and mopped the dining/sitting room and swept again. A Message from

the ProvincialSamaritan at a Mass and shared this story. “Bag-Lady Sally" lived in his neighborhood. He and his friends played tricks on her that weren’t nice. One night when he went home for supper, he saw Sally's cart outside his house. He went in and she was sitting at the dining room table. His mother was waiting on her. He tried to sneak out, but his mother made him sit at the table next to Sally. He said that seeing his mother serve this “outcast” woman taught him more about who Jesus was than any theology he learned in the seminary. This striking story of serving Jesus in our neighbor, especially the least, reminds me that this is why we do what we do. Each of us, in our own way, hopes to love Jesus and to serve him, especially in the least of our brothers and sisters. We pray for God’s abundant blessings on you and those you love. We are grateful for our partnership with you in the mission of Jesus.

The Holy Spirit was busy this summer at the provincial house as many of our Sisters and some of our Associates made retreat. We have been blessed with good retreat directors assisting us to be renewed in our love for Jesus and his mission.

Many of our sponsored ministries are in the midst of major growth. St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead received a community partnership award from the Chamber of Commerce and dedicated the new Center for Health, Education and Research, which we share with Morehead State University and the University of Kentucky. St. Charles Care Center is in the midst of the capital campaign to build personal care beds and update the facilities to better serve our senior population. Notre Dame Academy welcomes a new principal, Dr. Laura Koehl and a very large freshman class. Julie Learning Center is nearly at capacity

for this new school year, and our new Notre Dame Urban Education Center had a very successful Summer Session with many children and volunteers. We also rejoice with the Diocesan Catholic Children’s Home as they move forward with their new building. Our Mission in Uganda continues to grow. We are praying for rain so that they can have the water they need to live. Our 4th of July Social was a big success, and we are grateful to our benefactors and friends. Four of our sisters and one of our Associates made a summer mission trip to New Orleans. They shared the following: A Redemptorist priest preached on the Gospel of the Good

Laura Pitstick was born in Jamestown, Ohio, on January 15, 1919. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame and on August 16, 1938, professed her vows. Sister Mary Joann was an elementary school teacher and principal for many years. She also served as a supervisor and consultant for the schools of the Diocese of Covington. She was known for her creativity and gift for training teachers. Sister Mary Bernard Clare Budde commented, “Sister Joann was very spiritual and radiated goodness. She loved children and no child ever fell through the cracks. That was what made her such a great teacher and principal." Most of Sister Mary Joann’s teaching career was spent at St. John and St. Augustine Schools in Covington, and Sacred Heart in Bellevue, Kentucky. When she was principal of St. Columban in Loveland, Ohio, the school earned the national Blue Ribbon Award, the highest award a school can achieve in the United States. In 1983, Sister Mary Joann was honored with the Thomas More College Distinguished Alumni Award for her "outstanding and meritorious service." In 1971, Sister Mary Joann was installed as the fifth provincial of the Sisters of Notre Dame, a position she held for twelve years. Sister Marla Monahan, current provincial, explained, “Sister Mary Joann loved God with all her heart, loved her community, and loved to serve God's people. She shared her loving heart with many people. She understood the challenges and blessings of being provincial, and I know she prayed for me every day." Her years as provincial were marked by the renovation of the chapel at St. Joseph Heights including a new altar, the addition of the Joseph Hall wing, and the conversion of the third floor dormitories to individual bedrooms. Sister Mary Joann had a great talent for coordinating special activities for residents at St. Charles Care Center, which she did for five years, and then for sisters in the provincial house. “She was the creative one,” smiles Sister Mary Bernard Clare, her assistant succeeding Sister Mary Eleanor. “I loved helping her plan and

prepare each of the activities, and the sisters enjoyed every one of them.” Sister had a theme for each of the activities. The last one before her death was entitled “Thanksgiving.” The next one, a few days after her death, she had named “The Last Hurrah.” Sister Mary Joann Pitstick died peacefully on Pentecost Sunday, May 23. Her death was her “last huarrah,” which turned into a heavenly alleluia!

Every year, International Women’s Day, a national holiday celebrated in Uganda, is marked in major cities by parades, demonstrations, and rallies. At Notre Dame Academy in Uganda, we strive to make this holiday meaningful for our all-women student body. This year we held a Fine Arts Day. Each dormitory acted as a team and prepared a short play in English, song-and-dance routine, and fashion show focusing on the dignity of women and their contributions to society. The unique fashions that adorned each model, usually the youngest freshman, were all-natural materials made of grasses, toilet paper, banana leaves, and feathers. The result was a totally enjoyable afternoon spent in mutual appreciation, laughter, and generalized fun. The dormitory deemed the best by a panel of judges was awarded sweeties (candy) all around.

Interns Help St. Julie Farm Go GreenSt. Julie Mission Farm boasts extensive gardens of bananas, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, beans, cassava, tomatoes, onions, pineapples, paw-paws, and other fruits and vegetables. Our animal department cares for chickens, pigs, goats, rabbits and bees, providing our school community with quality eggs several times a week and meat twice a month. The honey is considered a treat by both children and adults. The farm provides jobs to many women and some men from the local area, approximately thirty in all, who would otherwise be unemployed. This past term we were blessed to have two young, enthusiastic interns to help with the convent garden. Nassolo Grace and Matia Habert from RUCID Agricultural Training College were in their final period of training. They managed to transform our simple little garden into a high-yielding plot of many attractions. Thanks to our interns, trellises were constructed, compost piles produced, beds of varied

shapes dug, fertilized, and elevated for planting different vegetables and fruits. Our cucumbers now hang from a meshwork made of twigs, eliminating the need for stooping to the ground when picking and decreasing the risk of insect and water damage. Grace and Habert introduced a unique method of watering during the rainy season: bottles are filled with water and then turned upside-down in the soil of the eggplant plot. They release water very slowly close to the roots and nothing is wasted in runoff. Our interns were committed to all organic materials, so fertilization was done with plant and animal wastes, and pesticides were made from hot peppers and spices. We were impressed by the long hours of labor put in by our eager workers as well as by the beautiful yields obtained. We thank God for the dedication and hard work of Grace and Habert.

St. Julie School was finally ready. The sisters wrote, “…the 31st of January proved to be a day filled with promise – the promise of a new hope extended to the thirty-nine sets of parents and children who arrived at St. Julie School by 11 a.m.…The classroom was arranged with forty student desks and chairs…the students sat in their little desks, their faces were beaming and were eager to learn.” In the Buseesa area many children had never held a book, so the first students of St. Julie School were excited when the school library opened. While the first four students were trained in how to choose and check out a book, the others crammed at the door eagerly waiting their turn. During the first weeks, many of the children were taking to their beds with various ailments. Sister Mary Delrita, a registered nurse, diagnosed the mysterious illness: homesickness combined with too much free time. At home, the children's time was consumed with chores and care of younger siblings. At school, they had free time. Solution: “We now have a teacher…to teach the children games which they can play in their free time." When a mother came to make a partial payment of school fees, she said, “You know, Sister, money is very hard to come by…Ever since we heard that our child was accepted to your school, the family has not taken any sugar nor eaten any meat. The money is set aside so my daughter will have a chance to better her life.” Near the end of the first year, the children at St. Julie School were asked why they liked their new school. Some of their responses: "...because they teach very well and speak English...because we eat good food...because we are in peace, we are not fighting...because the sisters are teaching us about God...because the sisters love the children." As soon as St. Julie School opened, we began thinking about

• 7

providing education at the

secondary level. Additional sisters from the United States came, and with native teachers, Notre Dame Academy welcomed its first students. A sister wrote, “Most native visitors to our school are impressed with the equipment we have, which is very simple by American standards.” For one of the science experiments, Sister commented that “the hardest item to produce for these classrooms was HOT water since we have no electricity and keeping the water really hot can be a task!...I can hardly wait to get to the chapter on electricity.” Within a few years, a science block was constructed and computers, using solar power, were introduced. The sisters were also receiving instruction in the Runyoro language and have worked hard at their language lessons. It is most apparent in their meeting with the people at church, along the road, and with those who stop by the convent. The people are delighted to hear greetings in their own language, and brief “conversations” ensue.

COMMITMENT From the very beginning, the sisters were missioned to Uganda from the provinces of Kentucky and California and later from Chardon, Ohio, Germany, and India, and now the newly professed Ugandan sisters have a strong commitment to the people and the ministry. Shortly after arriving in Buseesa, one of the sisters wrote: "I’m convinced we’ve come to the right place to do God’s work...I’m happy that the SNDs said yes to this mission and happier that I was chosen to be part of the beginnings." The commitment is from the sisters back home, families of the sisters, and many generous benefactors who consistently supported the Uganda mission by their prayers and donations. The Province is most grateful for these sisters who take seriously the words of Jesus, “Whatever you do to

others, you do to me.”

Shirley Schmitz has been with JLC since 2000. She had just retired from Children, Inc. as Director of School-Age Services. When I discovered that she would be looking for something new, I called her immediately, Shirley has been involved in some way with children since 1977 when she began teaching Kindergarten and Preschool. Her reputation with children preceded her, so I knew what I was getting. Shirley is calm and patient with children, no matter the circumstance, and it is obvious that she respects them as people first and foremost. It isn't a day or two before the children love her and she has them wrapped around her finger. Shirley is a great gift to JLC and we are lucky to share each day with her. Shirley has been married for 41 years to Don and has a son, Mike, who teaches Math at a local university

It’s fresh start for a new school year at Notre Dame Academy. The doors opened on August 18 to welcome nearly 180 freshmen, making it one of the largest classes of the past two decades. It is also the beginning of a new administration with Dr. Laura Koehl, the first lay principal, Mrs. Molly Mullee, assistant principal, and seven new faculty members. Another first this year: NDA will now host its own soccer games. Thanks to the Bob Stevens family, the SNDs have been provided front row seating with two benches on the Height’s side of the field. The coaches offered a soccer clinic for the sisters to meet the team and learn the essentials of the game to guarantee the sisters' viewing enjoyment. The field itself was initiated during a special event on August 21. During halftime of the varsity soccer game against Lexington Catholic, former soccer coaches were recognized along with the members of the 2004 State Soccer Team. As faculty and staff initiate a new school year, they are once more reminded of God’s goodness and provident care that continues to embrace the NDA community.

On July 9th, twenty Associates and two Sisters visited Morehead, Kentucky, home to several

associates and sisters who minister at St. Claire Regional Medical Center. Sister Margaret Mary Mouch greeted us with a history of the hospital, starting with the sisters’ arrival in 1963. We learned that St. Claire offers state-of-the art medical care and numerous outreach services to an eleven county area, having expanded several times over the years. We visited various departments: cardiac rehab, radiology, the birthing center, emergency, employee administration and viewed a short video presentation by one of the hospital administrators. In the course of the tour, we met all the SND sisters, who were hard at work in their jobs. We also enjoyed an opportunity to visit the newly opened education building across the street from the hospital, which brings both Morehead State University and University of Kentucky Medical Center into training partnerships with St. Claire. Later, the Associates and Sisters gathered in the beautiful hospital chapel for a prayer service, prepared by Associates Mary Ann Robinson and Mary Ann Stulz. Four of us stayed overnight for a service project at Christian Social Services, Inc., an interfaith organization started by the Glenmary Sisters. Kay Stiner, the director, gave us a tour and history of the organization, and we spent several hours packing food boxes to be given to those in need. We worked in the thrift store, straightening, stocking and mingling with the shoppers. We were all so impressed by the scope of services radiating from this small community. It was an awesome trip for the Associates, seeing the work women religious have accomplished in health care ministry, particularly in an area where Catholics are few and were initially rejected.

Charlie's Club, the senior day-care at St. Charles Care Center, helps many northern Kentucky families care for elderly members. Opened in 1986 in response to community need, Charlie’s Club is licensed as an Adult Day health model. While enjoying a day filled with nutritious meals, snacks, social, and religious activities, participants may also have their health care needs met by two registered nurses; get a “do” in the beauty shop; and receive help from licensed therapists and a podiatrist, all conveniently in the same building. Through the years, Club participants have come from varied backgrounds and professions, which provides for sharing of great memories and stimulating camaraderie. Family caregivers who work outside the home or just need a break appreciate the services, saying “The Day Club is great! Mother loves it. Thank you, God, and thank you, St. Charles!” “I feel very comfortable having my Dad attend ‘The Club’ on a daily basis. It’s that personal touch that matters.” “God sends us angels when we need them most. You are angels. Thank you!” Plans for new and updated space is part of St. Charles’ addition now under design. Eagerly anticipating the future, staff and members continue to enjoy every day at Charlie’s Club.

NDUEC Opens To Great SuccessNotre Dame Urban Education Center opened its doors on June 7, 2010. Over thirty children benefited from the tutoring and fun activities during the six-week summer program. Sister Mary Lynette Shelton, NDUEC Director, explained, “The children told us they learned a lot from the tutors and enjoyed the variety of people working with them. Of course, they loved the Wii system, art projects and music.” Volunteer Carol Weber stated, “The Center has a great sense of community, so the children and volunteers quickly developed a strong feeling of belonging.” She added, “Too bad the summer program is ending. The kids really enjoyed learning.” “Summer and fun go together,” volunteer Doris Wilmhoff commented. “By playing the Pizza Game to understand fractions and using a deck of cards to master multiplication tables, the children realized learning can be fun.” Mrs. Wilmhoff continued, “It is amazing to see an eighth grader not wanting to leave. She wanted to keep practicing her math.” Over eighty-five volunteers contributed to NDUEC’s success this summer, helping to prepare the children to start school in the fall. Many volunteers will be back in September. To join them, contact Mary Gray, Volunteer Coordinator, at 859-261-4487 or [email protected].

The provincial house bustled with activity as everyone welcomed six Sisters of Notre Dame from Germany. They were on a pilgrimage to the U. S. provinces where the first German sisters settled over 125 years ago. The visitors, along with Sisters Maria Christina and Mary Joell, attended Mass at Mother of God Church and visited the site where the first provincial house stood. Both the Cincinnati Cathedral and Covington Cathedral Basilica were on the must-see list, as well as the Diocesan Catholic Children's Home. Dessert was provided by various inner-city convents to the pilgrim sisters as they became acquainted with each mission. The itinerary also included the Freedom Center, where a piece of the Berlin wall is exhibited, and The Cincinnati Pops Goes to the Oscars at River Bend Music Center. After visiting Covington, the sisters went on to visit the Chardon, Ohio, province.

Serving Those in Need: A Mission to New OrleansSisters Mary Claire Engbersen, Jolene Flynn, Shannon Kriege, Ruth Lubbers and Associate Susan Von Handorf, were in New Orleans from July 6 - 16 volunteering at the Rebuild Center, an area homeless day shelter. The Center is a collaborative endeavor by the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Lantern Light Ministry, the Jesuits’ Father Harry Tompson Center, Catholic Charities of New Orleans, and the Vincentians at St. Joseph Church where the Center is located. Clients are provided a safe place from 8 a.m. till 2:30 p.m. They receive mail, medical attention, legal advice, and take care of personal needs. Sister Vera Butler also spearheaded the creation of the Tulane/Canal Neighborhood Development Corporation making the neighborhood more stable after Hurricane Katrina. Through grants, blighted properties were purchased, new homes were built, and future home owners were helped to become mortgage-ready. The Covington volunteers helped with the preparation of more than 170 meals a day, patient intake in the medical building, and office paperwork. Sister Mary Shannon reflected on the experience, “The Center is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all those who come. The staff not only responds to the guests' physical needs but also to their spiritual, emotional, and psychological needs. I noticed their needs are met with great love, respect, and compassion.” Sister added, “I hope I made a difference in someone’s life those two weeks.” Sue Von Handorf noted, “We saw the face of the ‘poor,’ the face of Christ. I wondered just who was serving whom.” Those from Covington felt truly blessed by the experience.

BBHS also welcomes Terry Bray, new girls' soccer coach, and Josh Feldman, new girls' basketball coach.

Hispanic Catholic Ministry, Dayton, OHThe Dayton chapter of LULAC, the largest national Latino organization, teamed up with two Wright State University education classes for a unique summer learning program for both teachers and students. Graduate students working on their M.Ed. came to our new space at St. Mary’s Center and pretested the children, then followed up with one-on-one individualized tutoring. On the final day the children were given certificates and learning games to take home.

Diocesan Catholic Children's Home, Ft. Mitchell, KYGround-breaking for a multi-purpose building was held on July 28, with over 100 people in attendance, including past residents, local politicians, Board members, volunteers, and donors. DCCH was awarded the Small Business Success Award from the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.

St. Agnes, Fort Wright, KYDuring the 2009-2010 school year, St. Agnes School was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School, a National School of Excellence. Principal Ms. Linda Groh commented, "We've always known St. Agnes was a Blue Ribbon School. Now everyone knows it." This year's theme is "Christ Be Our Light" and our goal is to instruct students in the beliefs of our faith, motivate them toward Christian Service Projects, and build a community where all are welcome.

St. Augustine School, Covington, KY As part of St. Augustine School's participation in "Healthy Challenge Week," first and second graders learned about the NuVal system, nutritional value of foods, during a field trip to the Florence Meijer's. In conjunction with the "Five a Day" program sponsored by the Northern Kentucky Health Department, students learned the importance of eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. The school received donations from the Health Department and also purchased extra snack items providing students with five servings of fruits and vegetables a day for one week. The students then had a better sense of what it takes to eat a more healthy diet. Despite all the new things the students learned about the foods they ate, for many of the first and second graders the highlight of the trip was the visit to the lobster tank at Meijer's.

Holy Trinity Child Development, Newport, KY Preschool activities began on August 16. We look forward to a great year, full of fun, exploration, and education. Fall Family Theater Night will be held on October 9, 2010 at 4 p.m. at Holy Trinity Junior High, Newport. Cincinnati Children’s Theater/Art Reach will present “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” Our children will sing and dance and afterwards there will be food, games, and prizes. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3 to 12. Please call Sister Judith Neiwahner at 859-491-7621 to purchase tickets.

Prince of Peace, Covington, KY Believing in the advantages of a community of learners, Prince of Peace School in Covington has formed multi-level classrooms in both the traditional and Montessori programs. This year, we have one kindergarten; three primary rooms, grades 1-3, one traditional and two Montessori; three intermediate rooms, grades 4-6, one traditional and two Montessori; and two junior high rooms, grades 7 and 8. The gift of new technology in the lab and classrooms, coupled with the school-wide emphasis on a community of learners, adds new excitement to the start of the new year.

When you hear the fireworks on the Ohio River and see the hundreds of thousands of people on or around the riverbanks for Riverfest, you know one thing;

it’s the end of summer. In Cincinnati, that may not be a bad thing; the dog days are over. But it is also means it’s a time of change, as the hillsides turn from summer green to bright autumn colors. Fall reminds you of a canvas painted by Monet or Pissarro, it makes you appreciate the beauty there can be in change. Change can also be an exciting thing. We saw that this year with the opening of the Notre Dame Urban Education Center. Children were excited about a place to learn over the summer. Somewhere deep down they knew this was helping them scholastically, but they were also together with friends and enjoying themselves rather than just sitting at home in front of a television. It was a good change. We decided not to fight Mother Nature this year and moved 4th of July indoors. Ironically, the sun shone bright, there was not a drop of rain, and it was very warm. Well, at least Mother Nature thought it was a good change! The Ugandan Mission Office will now be working together with the Mission Advancement Office and a new committee has been formed. Working by committee is a change for the Mission Office. In the past, the office was operated by a director and an assistant and we have been blessed with great leadership. I can hear the fireworks and am excited. The Sisters of Notre Dame always have welcomed change, seeing the beauty and opportunity it brings. Enjoy the beauty of this wonderful season and join us in welcoming change.

Sister Mary Rachel Nerone: The Face of the Uganda Mission Office

Sister Mary Rachel Nerone spent every afternoon for six years at her Mission Office desk at the provincial house. She sent out thank you notes, called donors, planned visits to schools and parishes, shipped packages, and everything else she could do to help the mission in Uganda from here in the United States. She truly believed in the work being done in Buseesa, and she loved the work she

did here to support the mission. While she led the Mission Office, Sister Mary Rachel brought the Uganda mission to parishes and schools in the Dioceses of Covington, Cincinnati, and Lexington, by giving presentations herself or scheduling other sisters. She worked tirelessly with principals to help students become mission-minded and find a connection with children their age in another part of the world. She promoted the sponsorship program, not only because of the need, but also because of her commitment to the program. Every time someone became a sponsor, Sister would find the right student and send a letter from the student along with a photo. She worked together with the Ludlow Knights of Columbus on the annual Pancake Breakfast, making it an “event” every winter. The Covington province of the Sisters of Notre Dame is grateful to Sister Mary Rachel for her dedicated service to the Mission Office. “Sister Rachel is an amazing person,” explained Sister Mary Magdelyn Strittholt, Mission Office Assistant. “She connected with Uganda and did everything she could for them. When she went on talks she just knew how to connect with people,” she added, “and people responded to her.” Mention Uganda and the smile on Sister Mary Rachel's face speaks volumes about how pleased she is with the progress St. Julie Mission has made since its humble beginnings.

The Sisters of Notre Dame are very excited about the future of the Mission Office under the direction of Barbara Kruze and are pleased to announce the newly formed St. Julie Mission, Uganda/Covington Province Committee:Sister Mary Margaret Droege, Director of Mission EducationSister Mary Joell Overman, Director of Donor DevelopmentBarbara Kruze, Director of Mission AdvancementSister Mary Rachel Nerone, AdvisorSister Mary Magdelyn Strittholt, Administrative Assistant for Mission Office

NDUEC Receives Technology Grant

The Rascob Foundation has pledged $20,000 to Notre Dame Urban Education Center for needed technology. Feeling abundantly blessed by God, John J. and Helena S. Rascob established the Rascob Foundation for Catholic Activities in 1945 in order to support works of the Catholic Church. “When building, build forever,” was Helena Rascob’s directive. With the help of the Rascob Foundation, NDUEC has now begun its work, building the future of urban children.

Our Fourth of July Festival was a great success! Many of our friends and families came out to spend the holiday with us and, of course, what did everyone notice? . . . It didn’t rain!

The Sun Shown BrightOn Our 4th of July Festival

The Silent Auction was so large it had to be spread into two rooms and everyone had to stop and look again. Was that really an All-Terrain-Vehicle parked in the corner? There wasn’t a child in attendance who wasn’t urging their father, "Please bid, Daddy, please bid." The most important part of the 4th of July Festival was that friends and families came together. That’s the history of this event. Sit with any of the sisters and they will tell stories of when their families gathered under a tree laughing while enjoying their fried chicken dinner, or former students who always came back with their families year after year. That’s what the 4th of July Festival really means. We thank all our friends and families for joining us again and making it such a special day. See you again next year!

Our guests enjoyed the usual games, both inside and out. Friends and families gathered together under tents to enjoy the lovely day over a cool drink, burger and fries, and ice cream, while checking if that pull tab they just bought was a winner. Children continually pulled parents and grandparents over to play one more game. This year children of all ages wanted their faces painted with incredible images like butterflies, the Cincinnati Reds logo, and skeletons, to name a few. Of course, 4th of July wouldn’t be the same if the piglet didn’t escape from the petting zoo!

Sister Marla Monahan and the Sisters of Notre Dame welcomed Sister Debra Marie Wischmeyer with great joy and gratitude as a perpetually professed member of the Congregation. Sister Debra Marie professed her vows on August 1 during the Eucharistic liturgy celebrated by the Most Reverend Roger J. Foys, Bishop of Covington,

at St. Agnes Church. In his homily, Bishop Foys said, "[Sister Debra Marie] gives her life unconditionally to the Lord, the Gospel, and the Church. It is wonderful that we are here today to witness." Besides the clergy and sisters, Sister Debra Marie’s mother, brothers, sisters, and other family members and friends were present for the joyful celebration. Following the liturgy, the celebration continued at the provincial house. Sister Debra Marie was radiant as she spoke of her journey to the day of her final profession as a Sister of Notre Dame. “I was not nervous at all," explains Sister Debra Marie. "I was very firm in my conviction." Congratulating the new Sister of Notre Dame, Bishop Foys thanked Sister Debra Marie for hearing "the call and more importantly answering. Your vocation is a great gift to the Sisters of Notre Dame and to the Church."
