Marine Safety for Year 7This term, Year 8 Marine Practices students have been learningabout water safety. Once a week, students make a trip tothe local swimming pool to practice their water skills. Thisincludes how to rescue someone drowning, how to put ona life jacket in water and what it is like to swim fully clothedin water should a boating accident occur. Students have alsobeen learning about potentially dangerous marine creatures inthe Hervey Bay region. Sharks, stonefish and jellyfish are someof the creatures that have been studied from specimens in thelaboratory. Students have learnt why they need to be wary ofthem and what to do if injured by one. These skills are veryimportant for our students should they chose to engage inwater activities now or in the future.

Speech ContestOn Sunday 30 August, Jemma Tennant, Corynne Berry andRochelle Paroz took part in the annual speech contest held atthe University of the Sunshine Coast. This is quite a large eventwhich included many of the languages taught in our schools.

The three girls were required to memorise a fairly long speechin German which included many details about themselves andtheir lives. In addition they were also asked questions to showthat they understood what they had said. Their speakingabilities were judged by native German speakers and it was apleasure to hear the feedback from the judges who spoke veryhighly of their language skills and efforts.

It was a wonderful experience for the girls to be able to use thelanguage they have learnt in the classroom in a real life situation.Congratulations go to all 3 students and to Jemma Tennant forachieving 1st place.
