WARNINGSome dust created by power sanding, sawing, grind-ing, drilling, and other construction activities containschemicals known to the State of California to causecancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are:

• Lead from lead-based paints.• Crystalline silica from bricks, cement, and

other masonry products.• Arsenic and chromium from chemically treated

lumber.

Your risk from these exposures varies, depending onhow often you do this type of work. To reduce yourexposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilatedarea, and work with approved safety equipment, suchas those dust masks that are specially designed to fil-ter out microscopic particles.

The Model G0550/G0551 motor is wired to oper-ate at 220V only. The planer motors draw the fol-lowing amperage:

Amperage DrawG0550 2 HP..........................................12 AmpsG0551 3 HP..........................................18 Amps

Use the following guidelines when choosing a cir-cuit breaker (circuit breakers rated any higher arenot adequate to protect the circuit):

Circuit Breaker G0550 ........................................15 Amp, 2 PoleG0551 ........................................20 Amp, 2 Pole Figure 1a. NEMA 6-15 plug and receptacle.

Figure 1b. NEMA L6-20 plug and receptacle.

We recommend using a NEMA-style 6-15 plugand outlet with the G0550 as shown in Figure 1aand an L6-20 plug and outlet for the G0551 asshown in Figure 1b. You may also “hard-wire”the planer directly to your panel, provided youplace a disconnect near the machine. Check theelectrical codes in your area for specifics onwiring requirements.

Electrocution or a fire canresult if the machine isnot grounded correctly.Make sure all electricalcircuits are grounded. DONOT use the machine if itis not grounded.

220V OperationWe do not recommend the use of extension cordson 220V equipment. Instead, arrange the place-ment of your equipment and the installed wiring toeliminate the need for extension cords.

If you find it absolutely necessary to use anextension cord at 220V with your Grizzly Planer:

• Make sure the cord is rated for StandardService (grade S) or better.

• The extension cord must also contain aground wire and plug prong.

• Use at least a 16 gauge cord if the cord is 50feet long or less.

• Use at least a 14 gauge cord if the cord isbetween 51-100 feet.

In the event of an electrical short, groundingreduces the risk of electric shock by providing apath of least resistance to disperse electric cur-rent. This tool is equipped with a power cord thathas an equipment-grounding prong. The outletmust be properly installed and grounded in accor-dance with all local codes and ordinances.

Always check to see if the wires in your circuit arecapable of handling the amperage draw fromyour machine, as well as any other machines thatcould be operating on the same circuit. If you areunsure, consult a qualified electrician.

If the circuit breaker trips or the fuse blows regu-larly, your machine may be operating on a circuitthat is close to its amperage draw capacity. However, if an unusual amperage draw does notexist and a power failure still occurs, contact aqualified electrician.

Always disconnectpower to the machinebefore performing main-tenance. Failure to dothis may result in seriouspersonal injury.

Regular periodic maintenance on the ModelG0550/G0551 will ensure optimum performance.Make a habit of inspecting the machine each timeyou use it.

Before each use, look for the following condi-tions:

1. Loose mounting bolts.

2. Worn switch.

3. Worn or damaged cords and plugs.

4. Damaged V-belt.

5. Any other condition that could hamper thesafe operation of this machine.

The table and other non-painted surfaces on yourmachine should be protected against rust and pit-ting. Wiping the table clean after every useensures that moisture from wood dust does notremain on bare metal surfaces.

Tables can be kept rust-free with regular applica-tions of products like SLIPIT® or Boeshield® T-9.For long term storage you may want to considerproducts like Kleen Bore's Rust Guardit™.

To ensure optimum power transmission from themotor to the blade, the V-belts must be in goodcondition (free from cracks, fraying and wear).Check the V-belts at least every 3 months; moreoften if the planer is used daily.

Make sure that the motor pulley and cutterheadpulley are aligned and the V-Belts are properlytensioned.

To align the V-Belt:

1. Disconnect the machine from the powersource!

2. Remove the V-Belt cover.

3. Loosen the bolts that mount the motor to themotor mount bracket.

4. Adjust the position of the motor until the pul-leys are in line, and check the alignment witha straightedge as shown in Figure 19.

Figure 19. Checking pulley alignment.

Figure 20. Tensioning Belt.

Squeeze the V-Belts at their midpoints with mod-erate finger pressure. You should be able todeflect each V-Belt about 3/4". Belts will rarely betoo tight, but will sometimes be too loose.

To tension the V-Belt:

1. Disconnect the machine from the powersource!

2. Insert a wooden lever between the motormount and the top of the planer as shown inFigure 20.

Loosen These Bolts

3. Loosen the two bolts that hold the motor pul-ley assembly to the planer (Figure 19).

4. Lift the motor assembly with the woodenlever until the belt is tensioned correctly.

5. Hold the motor in place and secure the boltsloosened in step 3.

6. Squeeze the belts to check the tension andrepeat steps 2-5 if necessary.

The gearbox is located just behind the handwheelon the right side of the planer. The gearbox trans-fers power from the belt-driven cutterhead to thepower feed rollers. The two-speed transmissionis controlled by a push/pull lever on the right sideof the planer. When engaged, the power feedrollers will move lumber through the planer ateither 16 or 20 feet-per-minute. The center leverposition is neutral.

To inspect the gearbox:

1. Loosen the socket head cap screw on thegearbox cover, and gently pull the cover offthe roll pins that hold it in place.

2. Check the bolts that hold the sprockets inplace. Inspect the drive chains to ensure thatthe retaining clips are in place. Replace theclips if necessary. See Figure 21.

Figure 21. Gearbox.

Since all bearings are sealed and permanentlylubricated, simply leave them alone until theyneed to be replaced. DO NOT lubricate them.

The following is a list of features and partsthat need lubrication:

Columns/Lead Screws—The four columnsshould be lubricated with light machine oil once aweek. The four lead screws should be lubricatedwith general purpose grease once a month. SeeFigure 22.

Worm Gear—The worm gear should be inspect-ed monthly and lubricated when needed.Remove the worm gear box to inspect. See partsdiagram for location.

Chain—The table height adjustment chainshould be inspected monthly and lubricated whenneeded. A good quality bicycle chain lubricantworks well for periodic lubrication.

Gear Box—Gear box oil should be drained afterthe first 20 hours of operation. See Figure 23 &24. Replace with 80W-90 gear oil. Inspect levelsperiodically and change yearly. Replace gear oilmore frequently under heavy use. Fill until oilreaches the top of the filler plug port for correct oillevel.

Drive Chain—The drive chain should be inspect-ed and lubricated monthly. Check the sprocket, the chain and the cotter pin during inspection.Use a general purpose grease. Some chains willhave master links instead of cotter pins.

Feed Rollers—The infeed/outfeed pressuresetscrews double as lubrication ports for therollers. See Figure 25. Add 1-2 drops of lightmachine oil to all ports before each use. Dailylubrication of the feed rollers is crucial to the oper-ation of your planer. Lubricate before start-up.Apply a light oil, making sure that the lubricantpenetrates the bearing.

The species of wood, as well as condition, willaffect planing ability. The harder the wood, themore difficult it will be to plane. Below, we haveincluded below, a list of wood characteristics youmay encounter when planing. The followingdescriptions of defects will give you some possi-ble answers to problems you may encounterwhile planing different materials. Possible solu-tions follow the descriptions.

Chipped Grain—Usually a result of cuttingagainst the grain, or planing wood with knots orexcessive amount of cross grain. Chipped graincan also be caused by dull knives or misalignedchipbreaker. Often, chipped grain can be avoidedby slowing down the feed rate and by taking shal-low cuts. If those options do not work, inspectyour lumber and determine if its grain pattern iscausing the problem. If the wood does not showsubstantial crossgrain, inspect your knives forsharpness and inspect the chipbreaker for properalignment. See the Adjustment Section.

Fuzzy Grain—Usually caused by surfacing lum-ber with too high of a moisture content.Sometimes fuzzy grain is a characteristic of somewoods, such as basswood. Fuzzy grain can alsobe caused by dull knives or an incorrect grindingbevel. Check with a moisture meter. If moisture isgreater than 20%, sticker the wood and allow todry. Otherwise, inspect knife condition.

Glossy Surface—Usually caused by dull knivestaking shallow cuts at a slow feed speed. Surfacegloss will usually be accompanied by overheat-ing. Often, lumber will be scorched and eventual-ly damage to knives will occur. If knives are sharpon inspection, increase feed speed or cuttingdepth.

Snipe—Occurs when board ends have morematerial removed than the rest of the board.Usually caused when one or both of the bedrollers are set too high. Can also be caused bythe chipbreaker or pressure bar being set toohigh. However, small amount of snipe isinevitable.

Snipe can be minimized by proper adjustment ofthe planer components, but complete removal ofsnipe is extremely unlikely. More likely, you willbe able to reduce it to a tolerance of .002". Ifsnipe under that level is a problem, consider plan-ing lumber longer than your intended work lengthand cut off the excess after planing is completed.

Uneven Knife Marks—Uneven knife marks canoccur when the chipbreaker is set too high.Inspect cutterhead bearings if re-adjustment ofthe chipbreaker fails to remedy the situation.

Chatter Marks—Usually caused by incorrectchipbreaker and pressure bar setting heights.Chatter marks can also be caused by running anarrow wood piece through the planer at eitherthe right or left end of the cutterhead. Chatter, likeuneven knife marks, will show in the form of a''washboard'' look. Chatter marks are more likelyto be inconsistent in appearance than unevenknife marks.

Wavy Surface—Caused by poor knife heightadjustment, a wavy surface appears when oneknife is taking deeper cuts than the rest of theknives. Remedy by resetting the knives to a toler-ance within 0.003" of one another.

Pitch & Glue Build-up—Glue and resin build-upon the rollers and cutterhead will cause overheat-ing by decreasing cutting sharpness whileincreasing drag in the feed mechanism. Theresult can include scorched lumber as well asuneven knife marks and chatter.

Chip Marks—Occur when chips are not properlyexpelled from the cutterhead. The knives catchthe chips and drag them across the lumber beingplaned. Chips tend to be random and non-uni-form (as compared to chipped grain). Can becaused by exhaust blockage or too much roombetween the cutterhead and chip deflector. Usinga dust collection system in combination with theplaner can help reduce chip marks. Inspect thechip deflector and readjust (as described earlierin the text).

Always disconnectpower to the machinebefore performing ser-vice adjustments. Failureto do this may result inserious personal injury.

This section is designed to help the operator withadjustments that were made at the factory andthat might also need to be made during the life ofthe machine.

This section is provided for your convenience—itis not a substitute for the Grizzly ServiceDepartment. If any adjustments arise that are notdescribed in this manual, then feel free to call theGrizzly Service Department at (570) 546-9663.

Similarly, if you are unsure of how to perform anyprocedure in this section, the Grizzly ServiceDepartment will be happy to guide you throughthe procedures or help in any other way.

Before attempting to adjust the table, you willneed to construct a gauge block. See Figure 26.Do not use common 2x4 material. Use a hardwood material like maple or oak. A pattern for thisgauge block has been provided for you on page48 of this manual.

A good alternative is to use a Rotocator Figure27. Use the Rotocator whenever the instructionscall for use of the gauge block or feeler gauge.Refer to the current Grizzly catalog for rotocators.

It is important that the cutterhead is parallel to thetable to plane stock perfectly square.

To check the table alignment:

1. Disconnect the machine from the powersource!

2. Place the gauge block on the table underone end of the cutterhead.

3. Turn the handwheel to raise the table untilthe block barely touches the cutterheadbody. The block should not be touchingthe knives. See Figure 28.

4. Slide the block toward the opposite side ofthe cutterhead. Use a feeler gauge to mea-sure the width of the gap, if any, between thetop of the block and the bottom of the cutter-head. If there is a gap, make a note, readingthe distance from the feeler gauge.

5. If the block wedges tightly between the tableand cutterhead when shifting from one sideto the other, repeat steps 1 through 3 above, but start from the opposite end of the cutter-head.

— If the gap difference from one side to theother is greater than 0.004", but less than0.016", go to step 5.

If the gap difference from one side to the other isgreater than 0.016", the table raising chain underthe planer base will need to be adjusted. Pleasecall our Customer Service number for chainadjustment instructions.

To adjust for gap differences:

6. Determine which side of the table must beraised to correct the gap.

7. Locate the two cap screws in the table cast-ing for each of the columns. See Figure 29.Loosen both sets of cap screws for each col-umn on the side you wish to adjust.

8. Push down or pull up the table in the desireddirection. Hold the table in position andretighten the cap screws.

9. Recheck the table to cutterhead parallelismagain. Repeat steps 1- 8 until the deviationis less than 0.004".

The thickness scale, located below the hand-wheel, can be adjusted for accuracy. However, material must be run through the machine toadjust the thickness scale. Make certain you havefollowed the directions in the Operations Sectionfor test running before attempting to make theseadjustments.

To adjust the scale:

1. Adjust the cutterhead height to the approxi-mate thickness of your test lumber. Measurethe lumber with calipers to determine itsexact thickness.

2. Move the cutterhead to 1⁄16" under the thick-ness of your lumber and feed your test boardthrough the planer.

3. Turn the handwheel one half rotation and runthe board through once more. Turn the boardover and repeat.

5. The variation between one side and the othershould not be greater than 0.004". Repeatsteps 1-4 on the other two knives. Again, thevariation between all three knives should notbe greater than 0.004".

Once you have completed inspection on all threeknives, you will able to determine whether or notthere is a need to adjust the knives in the cutter-head. Proceed to the appropriate section, depending upon whether you are using the jackscrews or the springs.

Figure 31. Using the feeler gauge to measure the gap.

The Model G0550/G0551 Planer has a three-knife cutterhead. The cutterhead is located in thehead casting and rotates on two sealed bearings. No lubrication is needed for the life of the bear-ings.

Because of normal use and wear, the knivesmust be periodically sharpened, replaced oradjusted. Adjustment from the factory must alsobe checked prior to use due to possible move-ment during shipment.

To inspect the knives:

1. Disconnect the machine from the powersource!

2. Lower the table and place the gauge block ora Rotocator under one end of the cutterhead.

3. Remove the V-Belt cover and carefully rotatethe belts to turn the cutterhead until the firstknife is at bottom dead center. Adjust the cut-terhead height until the knife barely touchesthe top of gauge block. Note—Rock the cut-terhead back and forth to determine bottomdead center.

4. Slide the gauge block to the opposite side ofthe cutterhead and check the same knife, rocking back and forth to determine bottomdead center.

— If the knife does not contact the gaugeblock, use a feeler gauge to determinethe difference between one side and theother. See Figure 31.

— If the knife bottoms out on the gaugeblock, repeat steps 1-3, but start on theopposite side of the cutterhead.

When making adjustments, all three knivesmust be adjusted the same. DO NOT adjustone knife without adjusting the others aswell. Improper knife height adjustment canresult in damage to knives, poor planer per-formance and possible operator injury.

Always adjust the thickness scale afteradjusting the knives.

Figure 32. Proper knife setting jig placement.

For the best results, it is best to have planerknives sharpened by a professional sharpeningservice which has the grinding and measurementequipment to assure that the knife cutting geom-etry is maintained at optimum levels. Knife sharp-ening is a procedure that requires some care andprecision, otherwise, a set of blades can be easi-ly ruined. Knives should always be ground as aset so they can be properly matched. Unequalmaterial removal can result in an unbalanced cut-terhead which can affect not only planing surfacequality but ultimately the life of the cutterheadbearings.

Your planer knives can be sharpened by a bladehone. See the “Aftermarket Accessories” sub-section at the back of this manual for more infor-mation.

The process of setting the knives in the cutter-head will come into play whenever you sharpenor replace, or after determining that setting is nec-essary during the initial setup.

The knives lock into the cutterhead with wedgetype gibs. Springs under each knife provide anupward pressure to help ease the settingprocess. Jack screws under the knives allow finetuning to help in the setting process.

To set the knives:

1. Disconnect the machine from the powersource!

2. Remove the upper cover to expose the cut-terhead.

3. Choose a knife to begin with and loosen thegib bolts just enough until the springs pushthe knife upward.

Figure 32 illustrates the features of the cutter-head that are mentioned in this section.

Figure 34. Tightening gib bolts in cutterhead.

5. While holding the position of the knife settingjig, adjust the jack screws, located on eachend of the knife, until they make contact withthe bottom of the knife.

6. While holding the position of the knife settingjig, tighten the gib bolts down again in thecutterhead (Figure 34). Tighten the boltsevenly from the middle, working toward theends.

7. Repeat these steps for the other two knives.

The chip breaker is located on the top side of theplaner and extends down around the front of thecutterhead. Its function is to prevent tear-out ordeep, unregulated gouging as the knives removematerial. The chip breaker works by breaking thewoodchips as they are being cut by the cutter-head. The chip breaker also deflects and expelsthe woodchips away from the surface of theboard and out of the planer.

To check the chipbreaker:

1. Disconnect the machine from the powersource!

2. Ensure that the knives are properly adjusted.

3. Place the gauge block on the table directlyunder the cutterhead.

4. Using a 1mm feeler gauge between thegauge block and the cutterhead, raise thetable until one of the knives just touches thefeeler gauge. Rotate the cutterhead by turn-ing the V-belts to be sure the knife is at bot-tom dead center.

5. Lock the table by tightening the table lockknobs.

6. Remove the feeler gauge and slide thegauge block under the chip breaker. SeeFigure 35. The chip breaker should justtouch the top of the gauge block. Slide thegauge block to the opposite end of the chipbreaker and check it in the same manner.

Figure 33. Proper knife setting jig placement.

4. Place the knife setting jig over the knife onthe cutterhead as shown in Figure 33. Theknife setting jig will push the knife into posi-tion in the cutterhead.

The infeed and outfeed rollers move the lumberthrough the planer, and press the lumber flatagainst the planer table.

Set the infeed and outfeed rollers to 0.02"-0.04"below the cutterhead knife edge at bottom deadcenter.

To check roller height:

1. Disconnect the machine from the powersource!

2. Lower the table so the gauge block will fitunder one side of the infeed roller.

3. Raise the table until the gauge block barelytouches the infeed roller. See Figure 37. Donot change the position of the table.

4. Slide the gauge block over so it is under theedge of one of the knives. Turn the cutter-head until one of the knives is at bottomdead center over the gauge block.

5. Measure the clearance between the top ofthe gauge block and the edge of the knifewith a feeler gauge. Note the measurementindicated on the feeler gauge.

Figure 35. Gauge block under chip breaker.

Figure 36. Chip breaker height adjustment.

To adjust the chip breaker:

1. Disconnect the machine from the powersource!

2. If an adjustment is necessary, loosen thelocknuts and turn the setscrews. See Figure36. Stop turning when the bottom of the chipbreaker just touches the gauge block.

3. Tighten both locknuts.

Figure 39. Inspecting bed roller height.

The bed rollers ease stock movement throughthe planer. The height of the bed rollers will varydepending on the types of wood you will be plan-ing. When planing rough stock, set the rollersslightly high to keep the lumber from draggingalong the bed; however, snipe may be unavoid-able. Smooth lumber should be planed with therollers set just above the plane of the table. Thiswill minimize snipe.

To adjust the bed rollers:

1. Ensure that power is disconnected and lay ahigh quality straightedge across both tablerollers. Use a try square to keep the straight-edge perpendicular to the table.

2. Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearancebetween the bottom of the straight edge andthe table. Ideal clearance is between 0.006"and 0.002". Measure in several places. Thismeasurement must be consistent across theentire table. See Figure 39.

6. Repeat steps 1-5 for the opposite side of theroller. Repeat all steps for the outfeed roller.

Feeler gauge measurement should be between0.02"- 0.04"on the infeed and outfeed roller atbottom dead center.

To adjust roller height:

1. Remove the drive chain cover to access theroller adjustments on the drive chain side ofthe planer. A single socket head cap screwholds the drive chain cover on. The belt sideadjustments are already accessible.

2. Loosen the roller adjustment check nuts andturn the roller height setscrews to change theheight of the roller as needed. See Figure38.

3. Check the roller height according to theabove instructions. Continue turning thesetscrew until the roller is properly adjusted.

4. When the roller is set in the correct position, retighten the check nuts you loosened instep 2 above.

5. Check your settings one last time and repeatsteps 1-4 if necessary.

4. Use a wrench to turn the eccentric shafts thatadjust roller height. Stop turning when thetable rollers are at the proper height.

5. Once your roller heights are correct, retight-en all the setscrews.

6. Check the height of the table rollers. Repeatsteps 1-5 until the bed rollers are properlyset.

7. Spin the bed rollers to ensure free move-ment.

3. Loosen the setscrews on both sides ofeach bed roller. See Figure 40.

SetscrewsSetscrews

To be effective, the infeed and outfeed rollersmust put pressure on the workpiece as it feedsthrough the planer. Too little pressure results inslipping boards, too much pressure results injamming.

Experiment with the best pressure settings foryour work situations. Some rough cut lumber willfeed through with relatively few problems, whileother lumber will have more difficulty.

Adjusting roller pressure does not affect height.

To adjust roller pressure:

1. Disconnect the machine from the powersource!

2. Ensure that knives and feed rollers are setcorrectly.

3. Unscrew the three regular pressuresetscrews on top of the planer body. SeeFigure 41.

The chip deflector keeps chips from falling ontothe outfeed roller. It is the orange plastic platelocated under the top cover.

The beveled edge of the chip deflector should beproperly adjusted according to your dust collec-tion setup. However, if the chip deflector is set tooclose to the knives, the rotating cutterhead maypull it in and destroy it.

To adjust the chip deflector:

1. Disconnect the machine from the powersource!

2. Loosen the three deflector mounting bolts.See Figure 43. Make sure the beveled edgeof the deflector faces the cutterhead.

— The edge of the chip deflector should be1⁄16" away from the knife edge if a dust col-lection system is not installed on yourplaner.

— The edge of the chip deflector should be1⁄4" away from the knife edge if a dust col-lection system is in place on your planer.

3. Tighten the chip deflector mounting bolts andmount the upper cover back onto the planer.

4. Remove the springs that are in the setscrewholes. See Figure 42.

5. Check for any dirt or grit, and clean thesprings and setscrews if dirty.

6. Screw the three regular-pressure setscrewsback in until they are flush with the top of thehead casting.

7. Screw the light pressure setscrew (Figure42) until it is approximately 1⁄4" above thehead casting. The feed chain applies addi-tional tension to the right side of the outfeedroller, so the pressure added by the setscrewneed not be as high.
