The Harm of Gambling

FRIDAY SERMON

USTAZ IBRAHIM KHALIL BIN ABDULLAH Imam

• Which means:• “O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.”

• My respected brothers,• Let us fear Allah with a true taqwa, hopefully with taqwa we will always have plenty of mercy and blessings from Him. The title of the sermon today is The Harm of Gambling.

• My dear brothers,• In this world we live, it is certain and without doubt we want a comfortable life and have strong financial footing. 

• To obtain a comfortable life, good and strong, Islam encourages its followers to find wealth with their own revenue. 

• In addition, Islam has laid halal guidelines that seek to gain the pleasure of Allah. 

• The Prophet (pbuh) said:

• Which means: Seeking halal sustenance is a duty for every Muslim.

• However, there are still Muslims who seek without thinking about halal and haram as long as it brings profit quickly. 

• It does not matter if it is obtained by cheating, stealing, blackmail, bribery, usury etc so long as it is considered one of the fairest ways to get profit. 

• Furthermore, nowadays, the act may be done cunningly by the perpetrator without considering it is as wrong and illegal in Islam. They do it all for the sake of luxury and glamorous lifestyle.

• Among the illegal acts and prohibited by Islam but is still practised by some Muslims is gambling. 

• Generally, gambling is a game that uses money or other things as betting which seems attractive, especially if the pleasure is easily obtained without the need to strive and work hard. 

• Gambling is still around because it is human nature to go after pleasure or luxury. Remember that gambling is an illegal and prohibited act on every Muslims as the word of Allah in Surah Maidah verse 90:

• O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. 

• My dear brothers may Allah bless you,

• At the same time, Muslims must be careful in the enthusiasm to find wealth for fear of being trapped with sinful and wrong acts which is prohibited in Islam.

• Today there are various forms of gambling, whether in a form of games or racing that occurs expressly or hidden. 

• What is certain as long as it contains elements of a betting or speculation and one of the parties will accept a loss, then it is categorized as gambling. 

• Among the elements of gambling is that which can be seen openly is a game of cards, lottery, 4D, sports matches which involves placing bets and using money for participation and as prizes and so on.

• Gambling four digit numbers known as 4D and lottery is the most widely practised by some Muslims, followed by computer gaming and slot machines. 

• This kind of gambling can do harm in the life of the gamblers even worse to the families, communities and countries. 

• Sad to say, there are Muslims who buy lottery in a month filled with blessings and glory, the month of Ramadan. Where is the faith and fear of Allah?

• Therefore we as Muslims should be aware of and avoid oneself and family from slipping into gambling activities such as:

• First: to strengthen the iman, because iman is one of the strongholds that can keep people from wrongdoings.

• Second: increase ones knowledge and appreciation of Islam. Every Muslim must have knowledge of Islam and to live so as not to deviate from the true Islamic teachings and beliefs. 

• To ensure a level of understanding and appreciation of Islam continues to increase, then religious education should be emphasized, especially for children.

• Third: perform enjoining the good and forbidding the evil. 

• The occurrence of disobedience and social ills today is caused by the lack in Muslims to uphold and implement the good and forbidding the evil among them. 

• This indifference to racial harmony and prosperity in the family, society and the State. 

• Indeed  enjoining and forbidding evil is the responsibility of every Muslim to ensure justice, safety and the welfare of society and the State.

• Each of the commands and prohibitions set by Allah SWT shows how beautiful Islam is and it protects the rights of the soul, wealth, ethnicity and so on. 

• While on the surface it looks as a burden but behind it contained various wisdom and mercy for His servants.

• Such is also gambling that can destroy faith, destroy families and self‐identity as Muslims. 

• Therefore, the cooperation and role of all parties is required to liberate the nation and society in this country from the gambling arena.

• My dear brothers,• Let us pray to Allah that we will all be spared from gambling and everything associated with it. 

• Hopefully with this, we will always obtain mercy and blessings of Allah SWT. For those who are involved in gambling, repent to Allah while you are still alive. 

• Are we willing to give food, drink, adornment and accessories from illicit gambling which is haram?

• Do we want to die while gambling? Are we not afraid of the painful punishment from Allah SWT? 

• Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said:

• “There is no benefit for flesh that grew from Haram sources, except that Hell is a better place for that flesh.” 

• Together we reflect on ourselves by appreciate the word of Allah SWT in Surah al‐Baqarah verse 168:

• O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy. 

O servant of Allah, remember that this world is a place for temporary lodging. Truly, hereafter is the everlasting and permanent abode. So let us devote to Allah for obtaining happiness and escape from the punishment of 

hellfire.

• Allah says in Surah Al Ahzab verse 56:

• Which means:“Indeed Allah confers blessing upon the prophet and His angels (ask Him to do so). O! You who have believed, ask Allah to confer blessing upon him and ask Allah to grant him peace.”

• Let us pray that may Allah SWT beplease with the khalifahs ofRasulullah s.a.w i.e Sayyidina AbuBakr al‐Siddiq r.a., Sayyidina Umaral‐Khattab r.a., Sayyinda Uthman ibnAffan r.a., Sayyidina Ali ibn AbiThalib r.a.

• And to his companions who struggle to upholdthe religion of Allah, also to his uncles SayyidinaHamzah and Sayyidina Abbas r.a. and to hisgranchildren Sayyidina Hassan and SayyidinaHussain r.a., his daughters Sayyidatina Fatimah al‐Zahraa’, his wives Sayyidatina Khadijah andSayyidatina Aisyah r.a. and the other wives.Followed by his family, companions, followers ofthe companions and those who come after themfrom time to time until the end of the world.

• O Allah, forgive all Muslims and believers,whether surviving or deceased. O Allah, grantus glory and prosperity to those who fight andspend their wealth in your way such as thosewho pay zakat, waqaf etc.

• Ya Allah, bestow your guidance and help to the leaders and kings of the Muslim countries especially to Abdaka Al‐Harith Lishariatika Al‐Sultan  Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Al‐Sultan Iskandar, the Sultan and ruler for the State of Johor Darul Takzim.

• And to Raja Zarith Sofea Binti Al‐MarhumSultan Idris Shah, Tengku Ismail Ibn SultanIbrahim, Pemangku Raja Johor and, the Princeand Princess, the royal kinship, and allMuslims.
