Meet Phyllis Sweeney and her Tin Lizzie! They came out to kick off the 90th Flagler Beach Birthday Bash on 4-11-15. Attendees arriving at the museum for a free Downtown Historic Walking Tour admired the 1911 Model T “Torpedo Run- about” which sported a clever birthday card (L). Many visitors enjoyed talking with Phyllis and her husband Bob, about Lizzie, history, and the Museum. Meanwhile, Museum staff and local restaurants were prepping for their 2nd Annual Food & Wine Tasting, “Cheer at the Pier!” The afternoon was tasty, toasty, breezy, tuneful and successful due to the work and donations of so many people, especially Co-Chair Kim Carney and new Museum Event Coordinator Denise Collins (photo below, story page 7). Late last month, Scott Fais called us from Channel 13 to say he was working on a new series about Florida Piers. We happily offered info about our iconic Flagler Beach landmark, AND offered tips about local shops and restaurants within walking distance, as requested. (Note: Where can’t you walk to in laid-back charming Flagler Beach, right?)

Scott arrived, guided by our Tourism Associate Amy Lukasik. He visited the pier’s (and Museum’s!) Surf 97.3 closet-sized radio station (photo below) and interviewed city staffer Rodney Harshbarger (photo bottom right). While at the pier, unfortunate but much-needed after-noon rains arrived. A short trot to the museum allowed Scott to protect his recording equipment and talk to Tourism Liaison Karen Young. Later Scott phoned us “thanks” and said he knew one thing for sure: That he would be back!

Special thanks to the “Weather Committee” for holding off the rain until after our 2nd Annual Cheer at the Pier & City Birthday Bash on April 11th. With kites soaring overhead, over 400 guests sipped and sampled tasty treats. Cooling breezes, pan-oramic seaside views, and toe-tapping tunes added up to a delightful way to enjoy the pier. We couldn’t have done it without our fantastic volunteers who deserve this “group hug” for making the day a success...along with our guests! ~Director Teri Pruden

Cheers to You All! Besides another well-deserved tip of the cap to our

“Special Ops Weather Committee” for holding off the day’s raindrops until after our 2nd Annual Cheer @ the Pier, we owe a round of thank yous to our generous cash and in-kind sponsors (poster below,) followed by a toast to the restaurants and their crews (poster created by CurlyTail at right) who shared sensational tastes and treats!

Listed far right are the great businesses who donated gift cards or other services. Museum members and fans, if you know a business here, applaud and thank them. If you aren’t a customer yet, now is a great time to stop by to see what these businesses are all about! Join me as we thank and appreciate them all. ~Director Teri Pruden

A special thank you to Carla Cline, MJ Elwood, and St. Augustine’s Sue & Richard of We-Kite for the awesome over-head show of fantastic kites that gaily soared above for all at the 2015 Cheer at the Pier to enjoy! PS: It seems that someone is always forgotten at “thank you time” and it is often the person, business, or group who most de-serves recognition. Help Preserve Local History

Reflected in our motto “From the Stone Age to the Space Age,” is the Museum’s connection with twin astronauts, Mark and Scott Kelly. You may recall that Flagler Beach’s first city flag was created just to ride aboard the space shuttle Endeavor in 2001 with Mark Kelly. Former Flagler Beach residents Richard and Patricia Kelly brought the Museum to the twin’s attention, which also resulted in private speaking engagements and much more!

And now, Scott Kelly has blasted off into space for a year-long stay on the International Space Station -- the longest stay in history for an American.

What makes this trip even more unique is that an unprec-edented Twins Study will be conducted. Ten separate medi-cal investigations involving Scott Kelly conducted aboard the space shuttle, will also be performed on his twin, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, here on Earth.

As Scott Kelly related during a recent National Public Radio interview with Arun Rath, the Twin Study idea originated during a meeting when Scott was prepping for an upcoming press conference to announce the space mission. He asked how he should respond if anyone inquired if there would be any comparative studies between him and his brother, noting that he will have flown about 540 days, compared to Mark’s 54 days.

That sparked the interest of staff at NASA’s Human Research Program (HRP) who realized that conducting a study of astronaut twins was indeed a rare opportunity and jumped at the chance to join with the National Space Biomedical Research Institute to ask potential researchers for investigation proposals.

The Twins Study will include ten separate research investigations in the areas of Human Physiology (effects of spaceflight environ-ment on human organs), Behavioral Health (effects on perception, reasoning, decision making, and alertness), Microbiology/Microbiome (dietary differences and stressors and their effect on organisms in the GI tract), and Molecular/Omics (how genes in cells are turned on and off as a result of spaceflight, how stressors like radiation, confinement and microgravity prompt changes in proteins and me-tabolites gathered in body fluid samples).

The investigations have been proposed by a variety of scientific entities and universities that will coordinate to share data and analysis as one large, integrated research team, according to NASA’s website (https://www.nasa.gov/content/twins-study/), which states “These investigations will provide broader insight into the subtle effects and changes that may occur in spaceflight as compared to Earth by studying two individuals who have the same genetics, but are in different environments for one year.”

Dr. Jon Charles, chief of the HRP’s International Science Of-fice stated that "this is a once-in-a-space-program opportunity”, and will contribute to the mission of the HRP which is to reduce the risk to astronauts during long duration space flight. Laura Niles of the International Space Station Program Science Office reported further that the data will contribute to genetic research and future human health studies here on Earth.

We are so proud of the historic contributions that Mark and Scott Kelly are making to science as they participate in this multi-faceted research project involving national cooperation between univer-

sity, corporate, and government laboratory expertise.

To learn more, check out our Gift Shop Book Shelf. For adults, there is a touching family background on the Kellys, and Mark’s wife, Gabrielle Giffords in the book “Gabby – A Story of Courage and Hope” written by the couple with author Jeffrey Zaslow. For youth, we have Mark’s Mousetronaut’s books and the latest: “Astrotwins: Project Blastoff” about a pair of twins who spend the summer building a rocket to orbit the Earth, which will encourage kids’ interest in science and dreaming big! ~Virginia Giaramita

T h e F l a g l e r B e a c h Museum is wheelchair accessible.

Sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.

Congratulations to the Museum for a great ranking that resulted in a state grant for 2014-2015 from the Florida Department of Cultural Affairs. We are thankful for the state’s support.

Welcome Denise Collins, who has joined the Flagler Beach Historical Museum as Fundraising and Special Events Coordinator!

Denise is a self-proclaimed “avid history enthusiast” who appreciates the Museum’s mission of preserving the history of our beach community and educating residents and visitors. In fact, Denise is a professional educator having taught third grade at Imagine School in Town Center for three years and currently home schools a small group of local children ranging from second to fifth grade. Denise’s enthusiasm for education will enhance the value she brings to her responsibilities in this new position. The ‘teacher’ in her would like to increase involve-ment at the Museum by young people, and sees the museum as a “place where our local youth can come to learn about where they live and be inspired to get involved in preserving and sharing the history”.

Denise’s duties as Fundraising and Special Events Coordinator will include organizing events including the Museum’s annual gala, with the assistance of our hard-working Gala Committee, valued members, volunteers, and community partners. Her organizational and communication skills honed in the classroom and developed dur-ing her earlier 10-year career as a flight attendant with Delta Airlines, and previous event-planning experience, will be invaluable to making our events successful.

Denise is excited to be a part of the Flagler Beach Historical Museum team and feels “there is an energy here that is positively contagious! Everyone loves what they do and wants wholeheartedly to see this museum flourish.” With that type of enthusiasm, Denise is sure to contribute greatly to our Museum’s success! ~Virginia Giaramita

Many thanks to the wonderful friends who come out to our events and photograph our attendees and volunteers. Their help gains us many more photos of guests enjoying their participation, but -- it does make it difficult to identify individuals and caption each photo with their names.

Facebook also has increased photo collection for us, but has made it more difficult than ever to give photographer credit in print as they have been posted and re-posted from near and far. We make every effort to use only photos we know the origins of, and in this issue, we especially want to thank Cindy Dalecki, Brett Howard, Linda Shaw Jones, and Doc Ed Siarkowicz.

Ed’s photos often have a white runner with his Ed Shark Photography on the side or bottom. Museum Board Directors’ Cindy and Linda’s photos often go unattributed with their blessing. And our latest volunteer Brett Howard will be credited on his photos. You can find info on Brett at B&D Productions Photography. For corrections or missing attributions, call Teri at (386) 439-6262.
