The History

GRSymphony.orgFor Tickets CALL 616.454.9451 x 4 9

Recognized as one of America’s leading orchestras, the Grand Rapids Symphony celebrates its 86th anniversary this season, a tribute to an enduring partnership with the West Michigan community that has embraced it since the orchestra’s founding in 1930. The Grand Rapids Symphony presents more than 400 performances each year, touching the lives of some 200,000. Nearly half of those who benefit are students, senior citizens and people with disabilities, reached through extensive education and community service programs. Nine concert series are presented with performances designed to capture the imagination of young children and adults alike, featuring a wide range of music and performance styles. These series include the Richard and Helen DeVos Classical, Fox Motors Pops, Nestlé Gerber SymphonicBoom, Porter Hills Coffee Classics, Crowe Horwath Great Eras, Sacred Dimensions, PNC Lollipops, DTE Energy Foundation Family and the D&W Fresh Market Picnic Pops series. Under the guidance of Music Advisor Larry Rachleff, Principal Pops Conductor Bob Bernhardt, Associate Conductor John Varineau, and Music Director Laureate David Lockington, the Symphony continues its search for a new Music Director throughout the 2015-2016 Season with eight renowned guest conductors leading the orchestra in Richard and Helen DeVos Classical series concerts. In January 2015, the Symphony appointed Bob Bernhardt as its new Principal Pops Conductor. The Symphony’s 12th CD recording was released internationally in 2011 on the Nimbus Alliance label, featuring three works by Philip Sawyers. Other highlights include a Grammy Award nomination for “Best Classical Crossover Album” in 2007 for the Invention & Alchemy DVD and CD, featuring “Hip Harpist” Deborah Henson-Conant, and the Symphony’s Carnegie Hall debut to a full house in 2005. As part of its inclusion initiatives, the Symphony presents the annual “Symphony with Soul” community collaboration. The concert features the Grand Rapids Symphony Community Chorus and connects cultures through the shared language of music. Concert proceeds help support the “Mosaic Scholarship Fund,” created in 2005 through a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Scholarships are awarded annually to African-American and Hispanic students, providing instrumental training and mentorship by Symphony musicians. The Symphony reached new and diverse audiences in 2013 with the creation of MySymphony360, a membership program for diverse young professionals. The Grand Rapids Symphony has a long history of commitment to youth education and music participation. This season marks the 55th anniversary of the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony and Classical Orchestra, presented by Meijer. In 2008, the organization established the Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Choruses. For more than 25 years, musician ensembles have performed in West Michigan schools, including the Artist-In-Residence program which partners with 41 schools, reaching into 15 counties and touching the lives of more than 17,000 Kindergarten through sixth-graders. Fifth-Grade Concerts have been presented since 1944, and annually they provide a live symphonic concert experience for more than 15,000 fifth-graders. The Symphony also sponsors the Grand Rapids Bach Festival, and 140-member Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus, which celebrates its 54th season this year, and provides the orchestra for performances by Opera Grand Rapids and the Grand Rapids Ballet Company. The orchestra is heard throughout West Michigan through broadcasts on NPR affiliate Blue Lake Public Radio.

Each year, the GR Symphony strives to provide programming that shares our passion for great music with every corner of our community by removing barriers that prevent some from being able to experience outstanding musical moments. In 2013-2014, we were delighted to launch our Music for Health Initiative that enables our GRS musicians to partner with the music therapists at Spectrum Health’s Neuro Rehabilitation Services. We expanded this program to the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion last season.

With the start of the 2015-2016 season, we are excited to announce that, with thanks to the generous support of the Daniel and Pamella DeVos Foundation, we have created two new programs that will also break down the barriers that prevent many people from attending GR Symphony concerts.

Forget the sitter… experience the Symphony as a family! Now students up to high school seniors are able to attend the GR Symphony for free, with the purchase of a full-price adult ticket. Free for Families tickets are available for Richard and Helen DeVos Classical Series, Fox Motors Pops Series and DTE Energy Foundation

Family Series concerts. Students in college or attending the GR Symphony without an adult are eligible for the Student Passport program.

Principal Pops Conductor

Principal Pops Conductor

BOB BERNHARDT Appointed the Principal Pops Conductor of the Grand Rapids Symphony in January 2015, Bob Bernhardt is instrumental in shaping the orchestra’s popular programming, including the Fox Motors Pops, Nestlé Gerber SymphonicBoom and D&W Fresh Market Picnic Pops series. With 32 years of experience as a Music Director, 36 years as a conductor of Pops, and 34 years in the opera pit, Bob Bernhardt brings a unique perspective and ability each time he is on the podium, and in every genre. Bernhardt first conducted the Grand Rapids Symphony in September 2013, leading the “Boston Pops Tribute Show” and will conduct numerous concerts each season in this role. March 2015 served as his debut as the Grand Rapids Symphony Principal Pops Conductor as he led the orchestra in “The Best of Broadway!” concert, part of the Fox Motors Pops series. He is currently in his 19th season as Principal Pops Conductor of the Louisville Orchestra (and in his 34th consecutive season there), and in his 4th season as Music Director Emeritus and Principal Pops Conductor of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera (where he was Music Director for 19 seasons). He is also Artist-in-Residence at Lee University since 2012. Formerly, he was Principal Conductor/Artistic Director of the Rochester Philharmonic, Music Director and Conductor of the Tucson Symphony, Principal Guest Conductor of Kentucky Opera, Music Director and Conductor of the Amarillo Symphony, and Artistic Director of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta. This season marks his 23rd as a frequent guest of the Boston Pops, which he first conducted at John Williams’ invitation in 1992. Along with Boston, he has been a frequent guest conductor of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (approaching his 10th season as conductor of their Symphony Under the Sky Festival), the Baltimore Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the Cincinnati Pops, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Dallas Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Seattle Symphony, the Pacific Symphony, the Florida Orchestra, the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and the Santa Barbara Symphony. He has been a guest with the St. Louis Symphony, Virginia Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, and many others. In the world of pops, he was worked with scores of stars from Broadway, Rock & Roll, and the American Songbook, from Brian Stokes Mitchell and Kelli O’Hara, to the Beach Boys and Wynonna, to Jason Alexander and Ann Hampton Callaway. And because of his extensive experience and lucky upbringing, he has rarely met music he doesn’t love. A lover of opera, he conducted productions with Kentucky Opera for 18 consecutive seasons, and for 19 seasons with his own company in Chattanooga, as well as many guest conducting engagements with the Nashville Opera. He received his Masters degree with Honors from the University of Southern California’s School of Music, studying primarily with Daniel Lewis. He received his BA-Fine Arts degree from Union College in Schenectady, NY, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Summa cum laude, and an Academic All-American Baseball Player. He lives with his wife, Nora, in Signal Mountain, Tennessee.

DISNEY FANTASIA – LIVE IN CONCERT (2012)

Fantasia (1940) and Fantasia 2000 (1999)In this age of 3D, HD, widescreen, 7.1 surround sound — and that’s just in your living room! — it can be hard to fathom how revolutionary Fantasia was upon its theatrical release in 1940. Neither symphony hall concertgoers nor families headed to the movies to catch the latest Disney cartoon were prepared for the breadth and depth of color and sound that poured forth from the screen. Walt Disney (1901-1966) and conductor Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977), in collaboration with the talents of 1,000-plus artists, musicians, and engineers at the Walt Disney Studio, the RCA Corporation, composer, author, and commentator Deems Taylor (1885-1966), dozens of dancers (including Marge Champion and members of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and Ballet Theatre), and the entire Philadelphia Orchestra, created a watershed cinematic experience that remains a visionary milestone to this day. Sadly, the expense of installing the Fantasound audio playback system in theaters, and the loss of the European market because of World War II, nixed Walt’s dream of an ongoing “Concert Feature,” wherein individual segments would be replaced by new ones. Though the Walt Disney Studio would utilize popular songs in several package films of the ’40s and ’50s, it would remain until 1999 and the release of Fantasia 2000, spearheaded by Walt’s nephew, Roy E. Disney, for a Disney-produced feature-length marriage of classical music and animation to once again reach the screen.

Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, Allegro con brio (1804-08)To begin Fantasia 2000 with a bang, Disney artists chose the opening movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, its short-short-short-long musical motif immediately grabbing the listener’s ear. And it also slyly references the time period of the original Fantasia when this four-note motif, the same rhythm as Morse code for the letter V (“di-di-di-dah”), underscored the “V for Victory!” rallying cry of the Allies in World War II. Computer animation was combined with hand-drawn pastels to create the look of this segment, the abstractions of what might be butterflies and bats paying homage to the abstract animated films of Len Lye and Oskar Fischinger, who had earlier influenced the opening segment of the original Fantasia, Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Here, light battles dark to the repeated rhythm of “di-di-di-dah,” suggesting that victory can’t be far away.

Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68 (“Pastoral”) Allegro, Allegro, Allegretto (1808)Conceived as an Art Deco interpretation of life in mythological Greece, Fantasia’s “Pastoral” segment was originally set to “The Entrance of the Little Fauns,” a brief episode from Gabriel Pierné’s ballet Cydalise et le Chèvre-pied. It soon became apparent that the story artists’ ideas were too great for such a trifle. In searching for a piece of music to support their vision, the Disney artists came across Beethoven’s program for his Sixth Symphony, in which he describes several pastoral episodes (scenes which take place in the country), including, “Happy gathering of country folk; Thunderstorm; Shepherds’ song; cheerful and thankful feelings after the storm.” Stokowski felt that Beethoven was ill-suited to Disney and Art Deco, but Fantasia’s onscreen commentator, composer Deems Taylor, was in favor of the match. Walt liked the idea that so many folks who’d never been exposed to classical music would have an opportunity to experience it as never before. As he put it, “Gee, this’ll make Beethoven!”

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Suite from The Nutcracker, Op. 71a (1892)One of the striking features of Fantasia’s Nutcracker Suite is how memorable the characters are considering how short a time they’re on screen. With personality to spare, these often faceless anthropomorphized flora and fauna (and faeries) remain with us long after the last note of music has faded away. One in particular, Hop Low, the smallest of the mushrooms in the “Chinese Dance,” always elicits sympathetic laughter from the audience – even though he’s onscreen for only a minute! When animating the “Chinese Dance,” artist Art Babbitt kept a copy of the music on his desk to help navigate the play of musical counterpoint. He also admitted to being influenced by the antics of one of The Three Stooges. When asked if he received any assistance with the choreography of the mushrooms, Babbitt replied, “The only choreographic suggestion I ever got came from Walt Disney himself. I had animated the little mushroom taking his bow on the last note of music. Walt suggested he take the bow after. Both ways would have worked, depending on one’s translation of the little guy’s character.”

Claude Debussy (orchestrated by Leopold Stokowski): “Clair de lune” from Suite bergamasque (1890/1905)“Clair de lune” was fully recorded, animated, and shot before being cut from Fantasia, ostensibly to shorten the overall running time of the film. The animation was later edited and released as part of the package film Make Mine Music (1946), accompanied by the popular song “Blue Bayou” (not to be confused with Roy Orbison’s “Blue Bayou”). Fortunately, a work print of the complete, unedited “Clair de lune,” as well as a copy of Stokowski’s original performance, survived and were reunited in a 1996 restoration. Walt saw “Clair de lune” as a segment to stand in contrast to the others around it, a moment of reflection and repose. Its sustained, evocative, slightly mysterious mood, enhanced by remarkably fluid camera work following two herons in flight in the moonlight, reveals the work of a studio at the top of its game.

Igor Stravinsky: Suite from The Firebird (1919 Version)Igor Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird was considered but rejected for use in the original Fantasia in favor of another of his ballets, The Rite of Spring. (Stravinsky was the only living composer to have heard his composition in Fantasia.) But the appeal of The Firebird’s music held fast to the artists at the Disney studio and over the years, when the idea of revisiting Fantasia was brought up, thoughts often returned to this early Stravinsky work. For Fantasia 2000, Disney artists crafted a story far removed from the original scenario of Stravinsky’s ballet: no longer a benevolent, if capricious being, the Firebird is now a frightening, fiery sprit of destruction who seeks to destroy the forest home of a Spring Sprite and her companion elk. The look of the segment taps into Anime sensibilities as well as the real-life eruption of Mount St. Helens, all to the purpose of illustrating nature’s circle of life, death, and rebirth.

Amilcare Ponchielli: “Dance of the Hours” from the opera La Gioconda (1876)Using such diverse touchstones as the animal caricatures of artists T. S. Sullivant and Heinrich Kley, and a George Balanchine ballet for the 1938 film The Goldwyn Follies (where ballerina Vera Zorina emerges effulgent from a reflecting pool), director T. Hee’s anthropomorphic marriage of high art

and low in Dance of the Hours never fails to elicit gales of laughter. This loving parody of classical dance, “a pageant of the hours of the day,” begins with Ostrich Ballet: Morning, in which an ostrich corps de ballet is awakened by Mlle. Upanova (modeled on Ballet Theatre ballerina Irina Baronova). Next comes Hippo Ballet: Afternoon, where Hyacinth Hippo (modeled on stage, radio, and screen actress Hattie Noel, as well as live-action model for Snow White and the Blue Fairy, dancer Marge Champion) makes her first appearance. Elephant Ballet: Evening follows, wherein the corps executes an elaborate bubble dance. (Walt suggested that the “elephants’ trunks can come up and spray like the Beverly Hills fountain.”) Next comes Alligator Ballet: Night. Here, Ben Ali Gator (modeled on Ballet Russe dancer David Lichine) and Hyacinth Hippo (additionally modeled on Lichine’s wife, Tatiana Riabouchinska) dance a pas de deux unrivalled in the history of ballet. A grand finale brings down the house. Literally! Walt continually added gags to Dance of the Hours, but never at the expense of the ballet. “The whole incongruity of the thing,” he said, “is the elephants and hippos doing what graceful people do. Of course, they can use natural props like their trunks.”

Paul Dukas: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (1896-97)Less than a decade after Mickey Mouse’s arrival on the silver screen, Walt Disney felt that the popularity of his alter ego was waning and decided to feature him in a retelling of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s poem, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, accompanied by Paul Dukas’s composition of the same name. A chance meeting between Walt and Leopold Stokowski led to the famed leader of the Philadelphia Orchestra agreeing to conduct at no cost. Disney envisioned a superior offering, with production values far above the usual Mickey Mouse or Silly Symphony cartoon. No expense was spared. Storyboards were done in full color. Mickey’s design was updated to allow for greater expression and, for the first time, his eyes had pupils. Animators studied live-action reference of a UCLA athlete jumping hurdles in order to accurately portray Mickey’s struggles. Layout and color design were planned in great detail in order to convey in images what could not be said with words. By the time The Sorcerer’s Apprentice was completed, its budget was several times that of a normal Silly Symphony. Realizing he couldn’t get a return on his investment with a standalone cartoon, Walt decided to make The Sorcerer’s Apprentice the centerpiece of a “Concert Feature.” “When [Sorcerer] was almost finished,” Stokowski wrote, “Walt said to me: ‘Why don’t we make a bigger picture with all kinds of music?’ and that led to Fantasia.” The Sorcerer’s Apprentice remains not only the seed from which the great “Concert Feature” grew, but perhaps the greatest ten minutes of animated storytelling ever produced. Sir Edward Elgar: Pomp and Circumstance (adapted by Peter Schickele from Pomp and Circumstance Military Marches, Op. 39, Nos. 1 [1901], 2 [1902], 3 [1904/05], and 4 [1907])In looking for a piece of music for Fantasia 2000 that would be familiar to a wide-ranging audience, Disney artists hit upon the idea of using Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No.1, a mainstay at high school and college graduations in the United States, and familiar under various other guises worldwide. Numerous story ideas were considered and rejected, including one that featured a royal procession of Disney princes and princesses presenting their offspring to Donald Duck! After developing and discarding a concept that involved animating every Disney character ever created, it was decided that, since The Sorcerer’s Apprentice gives Mickey Mouse his moment in the spotlight, Donald should have a moment of hope and glory as well. A retelling of the story of Noah’s Ark, with

Donald in the role of the Patriarch, provided plenty of opportunities for marching — two-by-two, of course — as well a variety of possibilities for the frustration-inducing, yet humorous incidents that are the bane of Donald’s existence. That Donald loses and regains his true love in such a grand tapestry only adds to the poignancy of this duck tale.

Ottorino Respighi: Pines of Rome (1924)Respighi’s Pines of Rome was one of the earliest segments of Fantasia 2000 green-lit for production. And it was, according to Roy Disney, “the first musical selection I suggested.” Just as the artists working on the original Fantasia stretched the boundaries of available technology, artists working on Pines of Rome were eager to show what could be accomplished with the then still-new technology of computer animation. (This is in the days before Toy Story!) Inspired by Roy Disney’s tales of piloting through cumulus thunderhead cloud formations, Disney artists combined elements of traditional hand-drawn animation with computer generated characters and environments to create the plausible impossible — a pod of flying humpback whales! As to what happens to the whales, the artists suggest that it’s up to the interpretation of the individual viewer. Roy Disney said, “Certainly it is about hope and rebirth, but there’s also a mystical quality to it that seems to transcend all that.”

GRAND RAPIDS SYMPHONY CHORUS

PEARL SHANGKUANCOVENANT CHAIR

The Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus was organized and founded in 1962 with the guidance and support of Mary Ann Keeler. Today, it is a volunteer organization of 140 members dedicated to achieving excellence in choral presentations. Under the direction of Dr. Pearl Shangkuan since 2004, the chorus has reached an admirable level of artistic choral performance. The chorus performs major works with the orchestra during the Richard and Helen DeVos Classical Series and Fox Motors Pops Series concerts. The Chorus actively seeks new members who are experienced singers and have music reading ability. New singers may join the Chorus throughout the season by private audition which can be arranged by calling the Symphony office at 616.454.9451 x 140. If you enjoy singing and want to be part of an excellent musical ensemble, join us. It’s even more thrilling from the stage!

In her twelfth season as the chorus director of the Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus, Dr. Pearl Shangkuan is a sought-after guest conductor and clinician all across the US and internationally. Recent engagements include making her conducting debut at Carnegie Hall, lecturing at several international conferences and serving as a judge in an international choral competition. A professor of music at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, her choirs have appeared at the American Choral Directors Association conventions as well as toured Asia and Europe. Dr. Shangkuan has a signature choral series with Earthsongs publishing and is also the music editor of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship music series, published by GIA. Studying under pre-eminent American choral conductor and chorus master of the New York Philharmonic, Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt, Dr. Shangkuan received her bachelor of music in church music (summa cum laude) and master of music in choral conducting (with distinction) from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey; and her doctorate in choral conducting from Rutgers University. Dr. Shangkuan and her family live in Grand Rapids.

JEAN SIBELIUS (1865–1957)In Memoriam, Op. 59

Duration: Twelve minutesWritten: 1909-11Movements: OneStyle: Romantic

Art is an important means for shaping a people’s national identity. In the nineteenth century, music contributed significantly to the building of nations. The opera composer Giuseppe Verdi became a symbol of the newly-united Italy. Antonin Dvor̆ák’s music embodied the soul of Bohemia, which later became the Czech Republic. Long established countries like England overcame the dominance of German and French music when they re-established their own traditions in music. Jean Sibelius is the composer most identified with an independent Finland. His biographer, Karl Ekman, states that Sibelius “Stepped into a leading position in Finland’s political front [by] virtue of his ability to interpret in music the thought and purposes that could not be expressed freely in words during the years of oppression. His place in the consciousness of his people, established by his musical interpretation of forms and moods of its mythical and historical past, was given an increased and fuller purport by his placing his gifts at the service of contemporary problems.”

In 1904, one of those contemporary problems was the fact that Russia ruled Finland. The face of that rule was the hated Governor-General Nikolai Bobrikov. On June 16, Eugen Schaumann descended from an upper floor of the Senate House, fired three fatal shots at Bobrikov and then shot himself. Sibelius and his friends were so overjoyed at the death of Bobrikov that they were arrested for displaying “unmotivated joy.” Sibelius decided to write a Requiem Mass for Schaumann.

He never wrote that requiem, but five years later, he may have returned to the idea of honoring Schaumann in a short orchestral work. Sibelius told his daughter that he wrote In Memoriam in memory of Eugen Schaumann but later contradicted himself saying, “The title may give the impression that I was thinking of the death of some particular person when I wrote it. This is not the case, however.”

In Memoriam is a funeral march. The slow, plodding rhythm is similar to Beethoven’s “Marche funebre” from the Eroica Symphony or Chopin’s Funeral March. Sibelius’ In Memoriam is significantly darker than both, however. It uses the power of the orchestra, especially the profound brass, to evoke strong emotion—without a moment of cheer.

Sibelius may or may not have been thinking of a particular person when he wrote In Memoriam. Nevertheless, the Finns used it to honor one of their heroes. In 1957 it was played at Jean Sibelius’ funeral.

ARVO PÄRT (b. 1935)Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten

Duration: Five minutesWritten: 1977Movements: OneStyle: European minimalism

Like many Estonians, Arvo Pärt was caught between two worlds: Fully dominated by the Soviet Union, but European in outlook. As a composer, he faced the same troubles as many artists during Soviet rule. When he wrote music that complied with the dictates of the party, all was well, but when he went against those policies, watch out! So, his Our Garden, for children’s choir and orchestra, and his oratorio The Pace of the World both received a first prize in composition. However, the authorities banned his Credo, mainly because of the text: “I believe in Jesus Christ.”

As a student, Pärt was a facile composer and could easily imitate any style. “He just seemed to shake his sleeve and the notes would fall out,” a schoolmate remarked. During the 1960s, Pärt wrote in a twelve-tone style derived from Schoenberg, but a spiritual and artistic crisis caused him to abandon it. He began to investigate the music of the early church. Finally, after a self-imposed compositional silence—and a conversion to Russian Orthodoxy—Pärt arrived at a new style which he called “tintinnabulation,” derived from the Latin word for “bells.” As Pärt describes it: “Tintinnabulation is an area I sometimes wander into when I am searching for answers—in my life, my music, my work. In my dark hours, I have the certain feeling that everything outside this one thing has no meaning. The complex and many-faceted only confuses me, and I must search for unity. What is it, this one thing, and how do I find my way to it? Traces of this perfect thing appear in many guises—and everything that is unimportant falls away. Tintinnabulation is like this. Here I am alone with silence. I have discovered that it is enough when a single note is beautifully played. This one note, or a silent beat, or a moment of silence, comfort me. I work with very few elements—with one voice, with two voices. I build with the most primitive

materials—with the triad, with one specific tonality. The three notes of a triad are like bells. And that is why I called it tintinnabulation.”

Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten is an early work in Pärt’s new style. He explained the title: “Why did the date of Benjamin Britten’s death—December 4, 1976—touch such a chord in me? . . . Inexplicable feelings of guilt, more than that even, arose in me. I had just discovered Britten for myself. Just before his death I began to appreciate the unusual purity of his music—I had

the impression of the same kind of purity in the ballads of Guillaume de Machaut. And besides, for a long time I had wanted to meet Britten personally—and now it would not come to that.”

The Cantus is beautiful in its simplicity. A single bell begins and sounds throughout the piece. Starting very high, and very softly, the first violins play a descending scale in “A” minor. The second violins enter, playing the same scale, only lower and exactly twice as slow. The violas, cellos and basses do the same, each playing twice slower. Finally, all sections converge on the single, loud pitch of “A.” The bell sounds a final time. Its long decay ends the piece.

JOHANNES BRAHMS (1833-1897)Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45 (German Requiem)

Duration: 70 minutesWritten: 1857-68Movements: SevenStyle: Romantic

No one is certain what prompted Brahms to compose the Requiem. He began it in 1857 but didn’t finish it until 1868. It is likely that he intended it as a memoriam to his great friend and benefactor, Robert Schumann, who died in 1856. It was Robert and Clara Schumann who had encouraged the young Brahms to concentrate on composition rather than a career as a pianist. Additionally, the death of his mother in 1865 has a close association with the completion of the Requiem. The full title of the piece, A German Requiem with Scriptural Text, indicates the most obvious distinction of this great work. The traditional Requiem is a Roman Catholic Mass for the dead. Brahms, a Protestant, abandoned the traditional prayers from the Mass, choosing instead texts from the Bible (as translated by Luther). He specifically avoided a prayer for the dead, which is contrary to Lutheran creed, and left out the “fire and brimstone” of the “Dies Irae” found in the traditional Requiem. By choosing his own texts, Brahms made the Requiem essentially personal, a characteristic that is evident in his sensitive settings of each movement. The dark, unusually low registers, and the use of archaic musical techniques such as counterpoint, fugue, and modal scales, lend an air of reverence and contemplation to the work. Brahms wrote his Requiem in seven movements for baritone and soprano soloists, chorus, and orchestra. The first movement begins with an orchestral section that introduces several of the important vocal themes to follow. It also sets the dark tone of

the piece by excluding the violins and clarinets. The second movement is an adaptation of a work that Brahms had composed earlier in life and then discarded. Melodies based on the Phrygian mode, used in ancient music to portray sorrow and death, gives this movement its distinctive sound. The third and sixth movements include fugues, again an attempt to create a mood of antiquity. The fourth movement, “How Lovely are Thy Dwelling Places,” is a reassuring, soaring chorus, reminiscent of Mendelssohn’s great oratorio, Elijah. Brahms added the fifth movement, for soprano and chorus, after the Requiem’s premiere in 1868, in memory of his mother. The last movement corresponds to the first, except that this time it isn’t those who mourn who are blessed. Rather, it is those “who die in the Lord.” The Requiem ends the way it began, with reassuring tranquility. The Requiem is Brahms’ best-known choral work. Along with Bach’s B Minor Mass and Handel’s Messiah, it is one of the finest examples of choral/orchestral writing in the repertory. In the words of Clara Schumann, “It is a truly tremendous piece of art which moves the entire being in a way little else does.”

DAVID HAMILTON, conductor

MICHAEL W. SMITH

David Hamilton is an accomplished and respected musician, a creative thinker with versatility, technique and artistic passion. He has earned a reputation as a premiere orchestral arranger and has a growing list of credits producing artist recordings, writing songs, playing keyboards and conducting choirs and orchestras. His music spans a wide range of musical genres on recordings from Shania Twain and Ricky Skaggs, to Renee Fleming and Lang Lan, to the Candadian Tenors, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Israel Houghton, Heather Headley, Sandi Patty, Steve Green, Don Moen and many others. He has created usic for the screen as a film composer, arranger and orchestrator and arrangements for the Walt Disney Company, Macy’s, The Boston Pops, The New York Pops and the Nashville Symphony. He has also written and arrange an extensive body of choral music sung by churches across America as part of their weekly and seasonal expression worship. David records in his hometown of Nashville and has recorded with musicians across the world in studios such as the renowned Abbey Road and AIR studios in London, in Prague, and on the Capitol, Warner Brothers and Paramount scoring stages in Los Angeles. Mr. Hamilton is also a gifted conductor. He travels extensively conducting recording sessions and collaborating with artists as a musical director for holiday, pops and choral concerts. He has also conducted at Carnegie Hall and has enjoyed serving as guest conductor for pops concerts with the Nashville Symphony on tour and at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.

“Sometimes you’ve just got to shake things up,” Michael W. Smith says with a smile. After selling more than 15 million albums, scoring 28 No. 1 hits, earning three GRAMMYs and more than 40 Dove Awards, no one would blame the Christian music icon if he decided to coast just a little bit, but that’s just not in his nature. Smith has always had a gift for delivering songs that capture the hearts of the listener and give voice to their thoughts and feelings. During his three-decade career, the Kenova, West Virginia native has shaped the Christian music landscape with such classic songs as “Friends,” which was named the No. 1 Song of All Time by CCM Magazine and “Healing Rain,” a powerful anthem that remains one of the best-loved songs in his extensive repertoire. Whether sharing the gospel on foreign soil or mentoring artists that seek his counsel on balancing family and music, Smith has long had a passion for serving God and serving others. It’s a fire that continues to burn brightly with no sign of abating. “I don’t see retirement anywhere in the Bible,” Smith says with a grin. “It’s a calling. I love to write. I love to play. It’s still the most beautiful place.”

Adding a stunning visual element to the concert experience, these aerialists and acrobats provide a three-dimensional entertainment extravaganza. Fusing the power and majesty of the live orchestra with the best of cirque artistry, Cirque de la Symphonie is the only cirque company in the world that performs exclusively with symphony orchestras. Andrey Moraru is a native of Kiev, Ukraine, and a graduate of the prestigious Kiev Circus School where he trained hand balancing under the legendary Vitold Kuvshinov. Upon graduating with an act fused with both balance and dance, Andrey joined the cast of Le Reve, directed by Franco Dragone in Las Vegas as a hand balancing specialist. After many years with Le Reve, Andrey pursued a solo career, which brought opportunities in Europe for numerous cabarets, variety shows, and circuses, including “Flic Flac” from Germany. He was recently a finalist on America’s Got Talent. Los Angeles has become his new home where he has performed with Symbiotic, Quixotic, and Troupe Vertigo. When not performing, Andrey teaches master hand balancing classes at Cirque School. Andrey’s trademark hand-balancing and acrobatic skills are now a standard part of Cirque de la Symphonie, which includes a mesmerizing acrobatic “adagio” act with partner.

Aloysia Gavre is an incredible aerial performer from the prestigious Ecole National de Cirque, Montreal, with early training from Master Lu-Yi and the Pickle Family Circus School. Her aerial acrobatics and graceful maneuvers on the aerial hoop, suspended high above the stage, add three-dimensional excitement to the symphony and the music hall. Aloysia was the Special Prize Winner at the International Circus Festival in Monte Carlo. A veteran of stage and theater performances worldwide, Aloysia is best known as a veteran of Cirque du Soleil’s “Quidam” and “O.” Her five years with Quidam established her as one of the best aerial artists in the world, and today she shares that experience with others as choreographer for Cirque Mechanics and Troupe Vertigo and as director of Cirque School in Los Angeles. Aloysia’s regular performances with Cirque de la Symphonie and live orchestras take aerial acrobatics to a new level.

Timber Brown is an acrobatic artist based in Las Vegas who specializes in Chinese Pole and Aerial Acrobatics. He began his professional career in 2006 in “Cirque de la Mer” at SeaWorld San Diego and has since performed all over the globe on television and in both public theatrical shows and private corporate events. Notable credits include featured acts in “Peepshow” in Las Vegas, a semifinalist on “America’s Got Talent” — Season 8, “Le Meilleur Artiste” in Paris that features the best acts from around the world, and countless other well received performances. Timber loves to design and build unique and innovative acrobatic apparatus’ and create new acts to showcase his skills. He is the founder of the charity Timber’s Kids which he created to help enable children that come from broken homes to overcome, grow and thrive as they pursue their own dreams.

Autumn Crockett began training in dance and acrobatics at the age of three at DC Dance Factory in her native state of Tennessee. Her exceptional talents soon led to television performances with LeAnn Rimes, Billy Gilman and CeCe Winans. Autumn’s unique combination of contortion, dance and acrobatics was soon recognized by The Edge Performing Arts Center, an elite company in Los Angeles that provided her with a full scholarship. She continued her movement training with Cirque School LA’s professional program. Her career took off soon afterwards, including appearances with Rihanna in the Video Music Awards, the movie I Kissed a Vampire, America’s Got Talent and numerous commercials. She has performed in live stage shows such as Odyssey Dance Theater, Troupe Vertigo, Le Ombre, La Mirada Theater production of “Cats” and for the Academy of TV, Arts & Sciences.

Armando Munoz began his performance career as a Latin dancer. His passion and tenacity lead him to win consecutive medals at both the 2010 & 2011 World Latin Dance Cup Championship in Las Vegas. Additional competitions include being a Finalist in the Mexico Salsa Competition and 3rd Place at the International Salsa Competition in San Francisco. Despite his elite recognition in Latin Dance he longed to fuse his talents with the Circus Arts. He sought aerial training from Master Ivo Gueorguiev from Cirque Du Soleil's Dralion production, and he specialized in Flying Straps and Fabric. This unique combo of skills led him to a dynamic career working with the San Diego Opera, California Ballet Company and Troupe Vertigo. Armando became co-director of the Alma Latina Performing Arts School in San Diego from 2006-2013, and now teaches aerial straps at Cirque School in Hollywood when not performing with Cirque de la Symphonie.

endowmenT fundThe goal of the Endowment Fund is to provide a perpetual base of support for the artistic and financial stability of the Grand Rapids Symphony. The Fund was established with the provision that donations be invested for income and appreciation, with adjusted percent of earnings used for annual operating expenses.

Gifts to the Endowment may take many forms: as an outright gift of cash, securities or property; a gift by will or trust; or a gift by life insurance. For more information, contact Diane Lobbestael, Vice President for Development, at 616.454.9451 x 122.
