IT IS SAID that a chain is no stronger than its weakest link. This can apply to any manufacturing process. But when it comes to food and beverages it is of vital importance that the material is handled in a correct way throughout production. What we eat and drink must be completely safe and it, of course, should taste exactly as we expect it to. Trelleborg’s range of hoses in black, blue, red, rubber or polyethylene film, is a continually increasing collection that is expanding with the growth of the food market where regulations are becoming stricter. A hose must endure heat and various cleaning processes. Some of them even need to withstand an explosion! Read about Trelleborg’s hose collection for any occasion on page 6.

the point where the Atlantic meets

the North Sea, the hilly and treeless Shetland archipelago forms the northernmost outpost of Scotland. In fact, the capital, Lerwick, is situated further north than Norway’s capital, Oslo.

Since the late 1970s, Shetland has provided a pivotal spot for the North Sea oil and gas industry, which today forms an important backbone of the Shetland economy. Two multimillion-pound oil and gas projects are currently under way: construction of the new Shetland Gas Plant and the refurbishing of the Sullom Voe oil and liquefied gas terminal – one of the largest in Europe.

This has created a huge influx of workers. But where do you house more than 2,500 workers on an island short on hotel beds? The simple solution turned out to be “floatels”: hotels that float on the water. These were rented in from various sources, providing an extra 1,000 beds.

Three floatels are now moored in Lerwick and one in Scalloway, on the west coast of the Central Mainland. Bibby Maritime Ltd. Of Liverpool, England, owns two of the floatels, including Bibby Challenge, a floatel berthed in Scalloway to house Sullom Voe workers. It has 337 single-berth bedrooms as well as a kitchen, restaurant, gymnasium, recreation rooms, reception and laundry facilities, and provides a comfortable home away from home for the temporary workforce.

However, the Shetland climate can be extremely windy. Local marine consultant Captain Zander Simpson of Shetland Maritime Ltd.

was contracted by Bibby Maritime to provide a safe, secure mooring for the floatel, including fendering that could withstand the roughest conditions. “The docking of the floatel demanded a high-quality fendering system capable of providing a safe and reliable cushion between the vessel and quay,” Simpson says.

AFTER DOING HIS RESEARCH, Simpson contacted Robert Mason, responsible for the fender rental service, at Trelleborg Offshore & Construction. “Trelleborg is an outstanding provider of fenders, and rental is a very cost-effective solution,” Simpson explains. “Robert was very helpful and even travelled to Shetland to oversee the fenders’ arrival in May last year.”

uses six Trelleborg 3.0 x 1.5 meter pneumatic fenders, which are rented for two years. Pneumatic fenders provide a safe, low-maintenance, high-performance mooring alternative, and the Shetland winter has indeed put them to the test, with almost four months of nonstop severe winds pushing Bibby Challenge onto the jetty. Simpson says: “It’s been as good a test as the Trelleborg fenders probably will ever get. They have stood up well to the extreme conditions.”

Trelleborg is better known in the marine industry for fixed fenders. “We’re probably the world No. 1 there,” Mason says. “Now we need to spread the word about our pneumatic fenders and our rental service. I’m looking forward to spreading the success we’ve had in the UK to new markets.”

ertrude Stein famously wrote “A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose,” but where the food and beverage industry is concerned, a hose is not a hose is not a hose is not a hose. With such a broad range of applications

in the industry – from dairies to distilleries to grain silos – a wide variety of hoses have been developed to answer various requirements.

“Trelleborg has been offering hoses to this industry for more than 25 years, and some of our earliest products are still in the catalog,” says Christine Dhiersat, Product Manager. Dhiersat is based at the Trelleborg Industrial Solutions facility in Clermont-Ferrand, France, where all the development and production of food and beverage hoses takes place.

“Development begins with the end users,” she says. “We try to connect their necessary requirements – say, high temperatures or resistance to fats or increased flexibility. Then we start thinking about what rubber solutions could be the best fit.”

Olivier Libes, Marketing & Product Development Manager, says that initially Trelleborg tried to fulfill those requirements through its existing product range. “But there were special cases, applications that required either flexibility or environmental controls or security,” he says. “So the whole range of hoses has been designed to address such needs. We use the best rubber compound, tube, cover and construction for the application.”

The list of considerations for a hose can be long, even beyond hygiene. For example, fats and oils can cause a rubber compound to deteriorate, reducing the elasticity of a hose. The hoses must be able to withstand various cleaning processes, including the use of steam and chemicals such as nitric acid. If the hose handles dry material, like grain or sugar, it needs to be abrasion-resistant on the inside while abrasion-resistance on the outside is a requirement for outdoor applications. Lighter hoses make handling easier for workers and create a safer work environment. High temperatures, of more than 80 degrees Celsius, age hoses faster.

Different applications require different hoses. For the dairy industry, where everything must be kept extremely clean, Trelleborg has developed blue covers to prevent the hoses from leaving black marks on the floor. The Vinitrell hose (above), with its red, nonstick, surface is optimized for use in wine making.

And there are other concerns. “With dry products, for example sugar or milk powder, there can be an electrical risk, which can cause an explosion,” says Libes. “Typically these dry goods are moved at high speeds in a dry atmosphere, so a charge develops between the particles, and the electricity accumulates inside the hose. So we developed Trellvac AL EC with special electrical properties – the EC stands for ‘electrical conductivity’. The hose is designed to conduct the electrical charge in the hose to a steel connection and safely into the ground.”

Another, perhaps surprising, consideration in hose design is whether the hose leaves marks on the floor as it is moved about. “Black hoses, like tires, leave marks,” explains Dhiersat. “Most of the hoses were black at first, but then we introduced blue covers, especially for the dairy industry, where everything must be kept extremely clean.”

But even the blue hoses were not a universal so lu-tion. “Wine makers used to use Citerdial, the hose designed for milk and other fluids,” says Dhiersat. “But we learned that spillage of red wine on the floor would cause the covers of the blue hoses to turn very dark. So we developed special hoses for wine that have a red cover and don’t have this problem.”

Above and left: The white inner tube of a hose is passing through the process of reinforcement. The reinforcement, called braid, gives the hose pressure resistance and stability.

One of those hoses, Vinitrell, also features a nonstick surface on the cover. Dhiersat explains, “Rubber has good grip. But when you, say, empty a vat to fill another, this requires a lot of handling of the hoses from one end of a cellar to the other. Our customers said that it was difficult to move the hoses around, so we helped find a solution – a nonstick cover.”

HOSE HANDLING in the dairy industry, too, has inspired new Trelleborg hoses. “We developed Lactadial to improve on the weight of Citerdial,” says Dhiersat. A milk collection hose must be unloaded by a worker from a truck and pulled over to, for example, a connecting tank.

“We wanted to find a way to make it lighter but still keep the characteristics that make Citerdial popular,” Dhiersat says. “So we changed the steel helix to a plastic helix, which reduced the weight but kept the flexibility and the long lifespan. For unloading milk from a truck we offer Alikler D, which again uses a plastic helix. A truck that drives over a steel helix flattens the hose, but with plastic ones, the helix breaks. The round shape of a hose gets restored by pressure in the hose.”

Alcohol production presents its own challenges for hoses. For example,

Fitting fittingsOlivier Libes, Marketing & Product Development Manager at the Trelleborg Industrial Solutions fluid handling solutions operation, says that Trelleborg’s focus within the food and beverage sector is not limited to hoses. “We have made a lot of technical improvements for hose fittings,” he says. “Diameter reduction is a very important issue. Hose fittings that make the diameter too small can create technical problems in some dry applications because this can create turbulence in the flow and a starting point for sparks or abrasion.

“We also offer specially developed nuts. Some are covered with a rub-ber ring to protect their ends and prevent a coupling from breaking if it is dropped. A patented rubber-covered nut provides a better grip and helps stop burns when they become hot,” he says.

in some distillery applications there are occasions when alcohol stays in the hose for a period of time. “One of the things about alcohol is that it tends to extract things from rubber compounds, so the alcohol may end up having a different taste,” Dhiersat says. “We’ve solved the problem with UPE, a polyethylene film inside the hose that prevents extraction.”

Similarly, Libes explains, Trelleborg is now working to improve the smell of its hoses. “Natural rubber has a very specific smell,” he says. “We use natural rubber because it is softer and more flexible than any synthetic rubber compound. But we are really looking to reduce that inner smell, which is especially important to wine producers.”

Dhiersat adds, “We must meet stringent regulations in sourcing materials for our hoses, since they will be used in food applications. Regulations are getting more and more strict, so we must stay informed, and the choice of materials is be coming more limited.”

Perhaps so, but the array of hoses is nevertheless increasing. “Food applications are a growing market,” Libes says.

Ancient or modern? Big city or seaside? Ski vacation or sunshine

holiday? Don’t worry, there’s no need to choose: Turkey has

something for everyone.

WITH EUROPE TO THE WEST, Asia to the east, Russia to the north and the Middle East to the south, Turkey – with its 74 million inhabitants – is necessarily a country of blends: of geography, culture and history dating from the days of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires.

Turkey’s Mediterranean climate features warm, dry summers that attract millions of tourists to its holiday resorts. During the 1980s, Turkey began to invest heavily in tourism, which has become a flourishing industry. More than 30 million foreign visitors come to the country every year. Most are attracted to the sandy beaches in Side, Belek and Alanya that stretch for miles, as well as the swimming coves on the coast of the Bodrum Peninsula.

The most popular city among tourists is Antalya, closely followed by Istanbul, which has more than 13 million inhabitants, thus making it Europe’s largest city – although half of the city is in fact located in Asia. This world metropolis is intense and energetic. Its tastes, smells and impressions are quickly etched into the mind, especially after a visit to the gigantic bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) in the old

quarter of the city. The bazaar is easy to find but difficult to navigate, with teeming shops lining the narrow streets, selling food, clothes and souvenirs. Don’t forget to bargain if you decide to buy something, and if you’re buying a carpet, feel free to have a cup of Turkish tea with the shopkeeper.

BUT TURKEY HAS MORE to offer than big cities, warmth and sunshine. There are, in fact, a number of ski resorts in the country, and more are being developed at a rapid pace. You can enjoy a day of skiing followed by a little sweet and warm çay (tea) and a visit to a hamam – a classic Turkish bath. In Eastern Turkey, near the city of Kayseri, is Erciyes, the highest peak in Asia Minor, standing at 3,916 meters high, which offers top-grade skiing at wallet-friendly prices. Another major ski resort is located at Mount Palandöken, near the city of Erzurum, served by daily flights from both Ankara and Istanbul.

No matter where in the country you might be traveling, food is plentiful. It is commonplace in Turkey to order numerous small

dishes known as meze, which are served with various dips. For many people, kebabs are what come to mind when thinking about Turkish food, but various forms of ground meats are also popular, particularly minced lamb (köfte). The usual ingredients in Turkish cuisine are lamb, fish, rice, eggplant, yogurt, cucumber and onions, spiced with cumin, garlic and fresh herbs such as mint and chilies. Desserts usually include some fresh fruit or sweet baklava, filled with pistachios and honey.

Visitors to Turkey should bear a few things in mind. The country’s many mosques are generally open to visitors, but it’s important to dress conservatively. Women should cover their hair and wear long sleeves and a long skirt or trousers. In

addition, it’s important to be respectful, especially to the elderly. Learning a few Turkish phrases, such as hello (merhaba) and thank you (teşekkür ederim), will be much appreciated.

FROM TURKEY WITH LOVE General Manager Cafer Kıș joined Trelleborg Sealing Solutions in Turkey a year ago. The sales office was established in April 2012.

What are the best things about Turkey?“Turkey is a blend of Europe and Asia. You’ll also find remnants from different historical ages – from the Ancient Greek and Roman eras right through to the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. This diversity has contributed to our multicultural nature – something that has influenced the philosophy, music, food and architecture of modern Turkey.

I love visiting the mysterious Cappadocia region in the center of Turkey and relaxing on the beaches in the south or west in the summer. My favorite resort is Kaș. And don’t forget Mount Nemrut (see main picture), where you can watch the sun setting over the extensive ruins of King Antiochus’s tomb.”

What are your favourite things to do in Istanbul?“Istanbul is a city that is always alive, during the day and at night. Everywhere you go you’ll find parts of our history, like Hagia Sophia, a church built in 532 that’s now a museum. It sits opposite the Blue Mosque, which was built in the 17th century. I like to visit the Grand Bazaar, which is so big it’s easy to get lost. After all that, I know I’ll be hungry and tired, and it’s easy to find a good place to eat on just about every corner.

I like eating fish by the Bosphorus, visiting the Old City or strolling on the famous İstiklal Avenue. If I have time, I like to explore the Bosphorus by ferry. I don’t like the traffic jams on the bridges, but travelling over one of the bridges very early in the morning or very late in the night can be really relaxing.”

BETTER BUSINESS [MEDELA AG]

SWISS-BASED MEDELA AG produces a world-leading range of breast pumping and feeding solutions. The company also funds research into human milk and breastfeeding.

“Most health research focuses on just a few areas, such as cancer or Alzheimer’s disease,” says Martin Elbel, Head of Corporate Communications at Medela. “This is obviously vital, but it means that hardly any money goes to fields such as breastfeeding and lactation.”

Medela has funded research into these areas for almost 20 years. It has a long-standing relationship with the University of Western Australia (UWA) and also collaborates with other universities, hospitals and research institutions globally.

SILICONE SOLUTIONSTrelleborg Sealing Solutions in Stein am Rhein, Switzerland, has been a supplier to Medela from the early 1990s and has contributed to the component design of more than 40 engineered-molded sili-cone components for Medela’s breastfeeding solutions, including numerous parts for its breast pumps and silicone breast shields.

“Both companies are connected by good and intensive cooperation in daily business, but also in the continuous improvement of products and in new projects,” says Gotthard Suter, Strategic Procurement Manager at Medela. “We see Trelleborg as a professional liquid silicone rubber manufacturer with a full toolbox of knowledge in production. We collaborate closely on designs, and Trelleborg always comes up with options in component design and manufacturing processes.

“Quality is vital in our breast pumping equipment, and from Trelleborg quality is high and stable. The components we require are never simple, but Trelleborg is able to effectively meet our require-ments for complex solutions.”

insttittutionns globally.

“Although lactation and breastfeeding have existed as long as the human race, we can still discover something new,” says Elbel.

There are more than five times as many components in breast milk as in formula, and no formula can duplicate the properties of breast milk. The World Health Organization recommends that mothers breastfeed their babies for six months. The benefits of breastfeeding are numerous: the baby receives nutrition exactly as required, and breast milk prevents the growth of certain harmful intestinal bacteria and reduces infections.

“At Medela, we want to encourage mum to feed her baby as long as possible with her own milk, and we provide

the products to do so,” says Elbel.Discoveries in the way that babies suckle have directly

influenced Medela’s products. Its breast pumps recreate the two phases babies nurse in. Initially babies suck rapidly and shallowly to stimulate the milk ejection reflex; then they switch to a slower and deeper suck.

“WE WORKED WITH Professor Peter Hartmann, an internationally renowned specialist in the field of breastfeeding and milk synthesis, and his Human Lactation Research Group at UWA,” Elbel says. “Since the mid-1990s, Medela has applied Hartmann’s breakthrough research, which finally resulted in the development of an exclusive pumping pattern called two-phase expression. It closely mimics a baby’s natural nursing rhythm to maximize milk output when using a breast pump.”

A new key focus area for Medela is the feeding of breast milk to premature babies.

Although the benefits of breast milk are even more important to preterm infants, these infants are often not capable of feeding from the breast at birth and even when they are, the mother’s body sometimes may not be ready to produce sufficient milk.

“Often a premature baby will need to be fed enterally and with a bottle,” says Elbel. “However, feeding from a traditional feeder is nothing like feeding from the breast.”

Through ultrasound imaging research it was discovered that milk flow is influenced by a vacuum produced by the baby through specific tongue movement.

“Analysis of the

way baby sucks and takes milk on the breast led to the development of two similar feeding systems, one for term babies and one for use with premature babies,” continues Elbel. “The teat of our Calma and our Calmita incorporates a vacuum-controlled valve that only triggers a flow of milk when the infant moves his or her tongue downward to create a sufficiently strong intraoral vacuum in the same way as the maternal breast opens the milk passageways under those conditions.

“CALMITA TEACHES a premature baby how to suck properly, making it easier for the baby to transfer to the breast and encourage maximum milk flow from mum. This combined with effective breast pumping to stimulate milk production, even in mothers who are not quite ready, can mean premature babies can benefit from their mother’s milk as soon as possible and in as high a volume as possible.”

Medela’s breast pumps recreate the two phases babies nurse in; from a rapid to a slower, deeper suck.

T-TIME 2-2014 15

A LITTLE SECURITY is a valuable thing in life, according to Linus, the blanket-obsessed pal of Charlie Brown in the “Peanuts” comic strip. Security is equally valued in real life, notably when the “blanket” in question is part of modern printing equipment. Printing blankets are polymer-coated composite fabrics used to transfer printing ink from the plate to the printing surface, and the process to make them has traditionally entailed the use of combustible chemicals.

Back when the offset web press for paper printing was developed in 1904, environmental considerations were not a high priority. But expectations have changed in the past 110 years; chemical solvents once used for preparing printing blankets are increasingly recognized as undesirable. Applications have also changed. Printing machines used to just churn out hundreds of thousands of newspapers now specialty machines are used to produce sophisticated packaging and for metal-decorated applications.

With more than half a century of experience in producing blankets for digital and offset presses, Trelleborg leads the world in this industry and is sensitive to both environmental issues as well as quality and performance considerations.

“ATTENTION TO the environment, health and safety is a duty for Trelleborg,” says Biagio Montano, Environment Health & Safety Plant Engineering Manager at Trelleborg Coated Systems in Lodi Vecchio, Italy. Although traditional technology for printing blanket production requires solvents, Trelleborg always operated in accordance with local laws and regulations, being at the forefront of respecting the environment and controlling its manufacturing process to achieve very low emissions.

Solventless solutions began to appear toward the end of the last decade. Trelleborg decided to develop its own solventless solution, incorporating not only the latest in printing technology but also customer expectations in terms of quality, speed and flexibility. In addition, the trend to larger cylinders prompted Trelleborg’s decision to design into its new Solventless Roller Head Line the capability of producing the largest blanket on the market at 2.7 meters.

SOLVENTLESS ROLLER HEAD LINE

The Solventless Roller Head Line marks a revolutionary approach to the

rubber coating process for printing, delivering cutting-edge double-coated rubber substrates without the need for solvents. Its 3.2-meter,

three-roll calendering equipment is the largest of its kind currently in production

and a full 30 percent larger than the next nearest alternative.

Producing such a large printing blanket roll is not simply a question of making the cylinder longer. “This was a massive project in terms of complexity, dimensions, time, impact on the site, automation sophistication and controls on every parameter,” explains Montano. “We have moved production technology of printing blankets from spreading and coating to extrusion and calendering, completely changing the working process.”

The new line was introduced in early 2013. By the end of 2014, the Solventless Roller Head Line will account for 70 percent of Trelleborg’s blanket production at the Lodi Vecchio facility and will reach 100 percent within five years. The reason for not switching the whole line

right away, explains Montano, is that Trelleborg makes 70 different types of printing blankets

for different applications, and it would have been difficult to switch such a

complex and wide range of products immediately.

Where the change has occurred, the results have been dramatic. In the Lodi Vecchio printing blankets manufacturing facility, use of solvents had

averaged about 150,000 liters daily. During 2013 this was reduced

by about 30 percent. In 2014 it is expected to drop by 50 percent and

in 2015, the reduction will be up to 70 percent. The potential to provide customer

satisfaction has increased equally as dramatically. The number of production phases has decreased from 19 to 11, with a clear added value to customers in terms of efficiency and time savings. The thickness of the rubber blanket is much more controlled, and surface finishing has improved. Other initiatives by Trelleborg Coated Systems include a plan for 2014 to replace its air compressors with low-energy consumption and variable speed motor versions. This will reduce electrical consumption by about 10 percent and decrease emissions of CO2.

Blanket-loving Linus and his environmentally-sensitive friend Charlie Brown would probably approve.

THE SOLUTIONThe absence of solvents means the roller head devel-oped by Trelleborg has reduced the environmental impacts, but its benefits don’t stop there. By eliminat-ing eight steps in the rubber coating process, reduc-ing them from 19 down to 11, the Trelleborg solution increases blanket production speed while improving product quality. The resulting product is a win-win for customers, the community and the company alike.

AT FIRST GLANCE the Pit Stop Line from Trelleborg Wheel Systems is just a thin orange band hiding inside a solid rubber tire. But for the forklift industry, the Pit Stop Line represents a new era in tire management – maximizing tire life, raising productivity, improving safety and reducing environmental impact.

The Pit Stop Line from Trelleborg is developed to end the uncertainty about when to replace a solid tire, and it does this in the simplest way possible: visually. The orange line appears on a tire when it wears down; telling the operator there is an estimated tire life of 80 to 100 hours remaining. This gives ample time for

tire replacement to be scheduled when it is most convenient for the user. To replace

a solid tire on a forklift in a busy factory or warehouse means taking a valuable

machine out of service for a period of time. If tire replacement can be incorporated with

planned maintenance routines, it delivers users two huge benefits. Firstly, it minimizes the length of time forklifts are out of service, and it avoids taking machines out of service prematurely for tire replacement. Both scenarios cost time and money. With millions of forklift trucks in service globally, this new tire feature has the potential to offer considerable savings and efficiencies for owners and operators of forklift fleets.

The Trelleborg design team analyzed thousands of used solid tires and discovered that

they had on average been replaced with around 25 percent of residual use still in them.

Gianluca Abbati, Research and Development Director at Trelleborg Wheel Systems, says, “Many people judge when to replace their solid tires based on their experience of and the rules applied to car tires. Lots of users think rules are the same and that tread-pattern wear for replacement of solid tires is the same as on pneumatic tires. In fact the two products are very different and cannot be compared.”

WHEN THE TREAD pattern on a solid tire disappears it may be only 50 percent worn and can continue to perform well beyond the point where a treaded road tire would need to be changed. The Pit Stop Line completely removes that misconception and ensures that tires are used for their whole life, giving customers maximum value and machine uptime.

The design team took 18 months to develop the Pit Stop Line feature from concept to production, utilizing rigorous testing. At a manufacturing level, the challenge was to create the orange pigment band of the correct thickness in a specific position within the tire – a challenge made more difficult by the size variations of the Trelleborg range of tires.

“As well as being consistent in position we had to be certain that the band would not adversely affect tire performance,” explains Abbati, outlining the underlying challenge of ensuring performance. “As a key supplier to leading global OEM forklift producers we have to be 100 percent certain that our products will continue to deliver industry-leading performance to their customers.”

For users there are many obvious benefits. Abbati explains that being able to use a tire

for its whole life has a direct effect on costs, in reduced downtime and longer maintenance intervals as well as savings on tire replacement and service costs; Pit Stop Line can reduce running costs in excess of 20 percent.

There are other benefits to be gained, including safety. The incorporation of the orange line helps to simplify tire inspection routines by giving a clear indication of tire condition. It supports the ETRTO (The European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation) Manual recommendation on tire safety and will make it possible, for the first time, to have 100 percent accurate tire safety checks. The Pit Stop Line helps prevent tires being replaced too late as well as too early. This is particularly relevant for the 3 to 5 percent of people who use tires well beyond the safe wear limit. Such users “risk accidents and damage to the forklift,” Abbati says, as the truck clearance with the ground becomes too small.

Another clear advance is the reduced impact on the environment by maximizing the life of the tires. This means fewer raw materials are used and less waste is created. It also means reducing the impact of transportation, packaging and more. Trelleborg estimates that globally as many as 400,000 fewer tires could be required, adding up to an industry wide reduction of 1,900,000 kilograms of CO2 annually from transportation.

This deceptively simple concept contributes to safety, it is cost-effective, and it ends the uncertainty about when a tire really has reached the end of the road. Deceptively simple maybe, but as another Italian innovator, Leonardo da Vinci, once said, “La semplicità è la più grande sofisticatezza” – simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

SOLID TIRESTrelleborg is the world’s largest producer of solid tires. These tires are typically used on

forklift and other materials handling applications. Solid tires are used on

machines because they offer greater load carrying capacity, excellent stability,

damage resistance and improved life.

SOLVING HANDLING SYSTEMS are designed to effortlessly move loads of as much as 5,000 tons. The Finland-based company, established more than 35 years ago, specializes in both manual and automated handling systems using air bearings and wheels. Their customers can be found around the world in the transformer, paper and workshop industries, among others.

Air bearings are pneumatic elements that can be positioned under heavy loads and moved in any direction. They make little noise and are gentle on floors, due to their low friction and low surface pressure. Air bearings operate using

air film technology, whereby a thin air film is

created

between a floor surface and the air bearing. This technique virtually eliminates friction so heavy loads can be moved with very little force.

To further improve air bearing performance, Solving turned to its longtime coating partner, Trelleborg, for the latest in engineered fabric. Since late 2013, Trelleborg has been supplying Solving with engineered fabric for its air bearings located under the Solving Mover transporter.

“HAVING LOOKED INTO Solving’s manufacturing process and application, we were able to assess their needs to create a tailor-made solution to fully match their requirements,” says Johan Frithiof, General Manager within Trelleborg Coated Systems. “This both improves the capacity of the air bearings and lowers the air consumption, resulting in our highest performance air bearing elastomer yet.”

Trelleborg’s advanced fabric helped Solving optimize performance and increase load

capacity. “With Trelleborg’s stronger fabric we can increase the pressure,”

says Anders Heikius, R&D Manager of Mechanical Design for Solving. This in turn improves air bearing performance, which is critical for reducing costly downtime in demanding factory environments.

“The improved performance is beneficial for our customers, and it gives Solving an advantage over our competitors,” says Heikius.

says McDonald, speaking from her office in Sydney, Australia. “For innovators, it’s really important to find a balance between right-brained and left-brained thinking. It’s equally important to note that people can increase their ability to think innovatively – and raise their InQ.”

McDonald is the author of the book Innovation: How Innovators Think, Act and Change Our World, published in 2013 by Kogan Page. The book contains interviews with more than 100 international thought leaders, including such figures as Fiorenzo Omenetto – head of an ultrafast optics lab that uses silk, Juan Cano-Arribí – founder of Plantel that offers affordable innovation tools, and David Schafran – CEO of EyeNetra that’s developed a smartphone diagnostic for eye tests.

“The idea of InQ – Innovation Quotient – came to me during a yoga session,”

Innovation is available as a traditional paperback book. But it also comes in an enhanced online version with a format that is itself inventive, using SmartMark “interactive bookmarks” that let readers share comments about specific passages.

“We wanted to use innovative technology to showcase these interviews about innovation,” McDonald says. “We wanted to walk the walk, not just talk the talk.”

McDonald is an entrepreneur herself, co-founder with her husband Michael of KimmiC (rhymes with “gimmick”), a company that concentrates on transformational technologies such as FlatWorld, which enables “seamless, simple and secure dynamic collaboration” anywhere on the planet. The concept of a “flat world” comes from the American journalist Thomas Friedman, who described how globalization has leveled the playing field in business, with traditional borders no longer mattering as they did in the past.

In today’s Global Digital Economy, or GDE, intercon-nected technologies are giving people unprecedented access to a vast range of business opportunities, McDonald says. And people are becoming aware that it’s a whole new world based not on physical infrastructure but on knowledge.

“Businesses are no longer limited by location,” McDonald says. “They can virtually access anything and anyone, any place and any time. You can be a mini-multinational on a pay-as-you-go basis, without the need for an expensive infrastructure setup.”

Innovators are as individual as their projects, says McDonald, but people with a high “InQ” share certain general characteristics. “They’re all questers,” she says. “They’re audacious, they’re brave, and they look for fellow travellers they can collaborate with on an innovative journey.”

Collaboration is key, she says. In the context of business, she says, “everyone involved in the process needs to feel safe to share their ideas. Innovation is about fixing a problem. It’s not about fixing blame, or being right or wrong, so there should be no preconceptions about the outcome.”

Also, McDonald says, “there’s huge potential in collaborating between different departments. By brainstorming with colleagues who have different areas of experience and expertise, ideas present themselves that both parties can benefit from.”

Her advice: “Collaborate and cooperate as much as possible. Find your inner child, and let him or her out to play.”

ADDITIONALLY, “EUREKA!” MOMENTS don’t always occur in a professional setting, she says. “Some innovators meditate. Some jog. My husband gets some of his best ideas while baking bread. More than a few jam on their musical instruments. So many of the innovators I interviewed were involved with music in one way or another. We likened innovation to jazz: It’s when you’re riffing with other people that the majesty of the ‘music’ really happens.”

Lastly, what does she think the future will bring?“I think some of the greatest changes are going to come

from something as seemingly simple as improving access to education,” McDonald says. “Nations need to have a vision that involves innovation, the way Nordic countries do. When it comes to innovation, the Nordics are kicking everyone’s butt. There needs to be a supportive national system, with health care, education, transportation and easily affordable mobile data. Governments need to acknowledge the importance of this.”

Also, she predicts, “the next life-changing innovation may well come from an unexpected corner of the globe. Developing countries are coming online, and they’re going to be competitors as well as consumers.”
