HELP THE FOOD PANTRY The food pantry needs donations, and in February they would like to receive donations of canned fruit in addition to other foods. They can always use canned meats like tuna and chicken, soups, and other foods. The box for donations is right by the front door. Please pop a couple of extra items into your cart for the pantry.

CREEKSIDE RESIDENTS NEED YOU! Creekside residents need more coloring books geared toward adults and more of the puzzle books we've been donating. They can also use colored pencils and colored pens for the coloring books. Please place the items in the box at the front door near the food pantry box. Remember that Creekside dementia and Alzheimer's residents can use your unneeded baby dolls and teddy bears that are clean and in good condition. They get comfort from those that their brains can no longer provide. And don't forget that you can visit the residents as well!

Reflection on Today’s

Readings

It’s so great when we don’t have to think hard to understand the readings we have on Sunday. The first reading tells us we have a choice: good or not good. What God tells us to do is good, and He will never tell us to do something unjust. In our world today, sometimes we see God’s words twisted around to try to convince us to do or think something unjust or unkind. If we go back to the original text, we’ll see the truth: do good, follow God. The responsorial psalm tells us we can be blameless if we walk in the law of the Lord. It reminds us that God has told us what the rules are; it’s up to us to observe them wholeheartedly. Paul adds that all that is wisdom is eternal. God has given it to us ages before we even got here, and the Holy Spirit reveals it to us. We have only to listen. But then Jesus comes in our Gospel and challenges us. He says He didn’t come to abolish the Law but to fufill it. He tells his listeners to be more righteous than the scribes or Pharisees. From our modern point of view, we know that’s pretty easy since the Pharisees weren’t good guys. They obeyed the “letter of the Law” while completely ignoring the spirit of it. Jesus’ audience didn’t realize how the scribes and Pharisees twisted the law to their own ends. In our world, that’s called “spin”, and it’s used almost anywhere we look. We see it in advertising, in politics, even in some churches. Good becomes bad and bad becomes good. Jesus sets His first challenge: Don’t kill people. In fact, don’t even get angry with them. Don’t call them names. Make peace with them. Yeah, but some people are idiots. Jesus says no. Don’t say it. Don’t even think it. Don’t let someone tell you it’s okay. Then He talks about marriage and relationships. Don’t commit adultery. In fact, don’t even look at other people lustfully. Don’t get divorced unless the marriage was unlawful to begin with. That’s tough in a world where we’ve heard people say, “Well, if the marriage doesn’t work out, we can always get divorced.” Jesus says, nope, not an option. Ouch. Then he gives us the final and most difficult challenge: “Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ’No’ mean No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.” Say what you mean, and mean what you say. Don’t spin, don’t cross your fingers, don’t tell people what they want to hear. Tell the truth. Do what you say you’ll do. Yes, it’s great when the writings are easy to understand, like they are today. But we have real work if we want to follow Jesus. And we do want to follow Him and His teachings.

Right now, we’re in Ordinary Time. Lent will be here in less than two weeks, but here are some ideas from Our Sunday Visitor we can use now or any time:

1. Create Your Own Novena A novena, nine days of private or public prayer

intended to obtain a special grace, favor, or blessing has long been a part of the Church’s devotions. You can find novenas for everything from world peace to healing, most of which are directed to end on a particular feast day of Mary, Jesus, or a prominent saint.

2. Keep A Gratitude Journal Some scientific studies have shown that people who

regularly “count their blessings” are happier than those who don’t. Often we are so focused on the negatives in our lives we overlook the positives.

3. Focus on God’s Abundance We don’t always look at finding pennies or dimes on

the ground as a big deal, but we can start being joyful when we find little things. Or we can enjoy and thank God for experiences like a kind word from a stranger.

4. Act Out Your Faith One of the reasons our faith can become stale is

because it can become too cerebral. Instead of “doing,” we spend most of our time “thinking.” So put your faith in action. During Ordinary Time, simplifying, eliminating, and giving away those things that we no longer use can become a great act of faith … and a great faith-builder. 5. Read something with moral value

Have you ever read “Mr. Blue” by Myles Connolly, “In This House of Brede” by Rumer Godden, or “The Shack” by William P. Young? In the weeks when the Church is not preparing for something special, we have the time to read what others have written about God, faith, and the meaning of life.

6. Keep the Sabbath Without the pressure of holidays and holy days, we

can design our own personal practices that make Sunday a day to anticipate. Find something you and your family can enjoy and save that activity for the Sabbath. And remember: family is not only people related by blood. Some families are people united only by faith, common experience, or other reasons.

Ordinary Time is only ordinary if we think of it that way. If we consider these weeks not as long boring stretches between the good stuff, but as a time to try new things and refocus our energies on our spiritual growth, Ordinary Time can become one of our favorite — and most rewarding — times of year.
