SECTION 1: SAFETY

AWAY. All children and visitors should bekept a safe distance from work area.

6. MAKE WORKSHOP CHILD PROOF withpadlocks, master switches, or by remov-ing starter keys.

7. DON’T FORCE TOOL. It will do the jobbetter and safer at the rate for which it wasdesigned.

8. USE RIGHT TOOL. Don’t force tool orattachment to do a job for which it was notdesigned.

1. KEEP GUARDS IN PLACE and in workingorder.

2. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS ANDWRENCHES. Form habit of checking tosee that keys and adjusting wrenches areremoved from tool before turning on.

3. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Clutteredareas and benches invite accidents.

4. DON’T USE IN DANGEROUS ENVIRON-MENT. Don’t use power tools in damp orwet locations, or where any flammable ornoxious fumes may exist. Keep work areawell lighted.

9. USE PROPER EXTENSION CORD. Makesure your extension cord is in good condi-tion. Conductor size should be in accor-dance with the chart below. The amperagerating should be listed on the motor or toolnameplate. An undersized cord will causea drop in line voltage resulting in loss ofpower and overheating. Your extensioncord must also contain a ground wire andplug pin. Always repair or replace exten-sion cords if they become damaged.

10. WEAR PROPER APPAREL. Do not wearloose clothing, gloves, neckties, rings,bracelets, or other jewelry which may getcaught in moving parts. Non-slip footwearis recommended. Wear protective haircovering to contain long hair.

11. ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES. Alsouse face or dust mask if cutting operationis dusty. Everyday eyeglasses only haveimpact resistant lenses, they are NOTsafety glasses.

12. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise tohold work when practical. It’s safer thanusing your hand and frees both hands tooperate tool.

ing and balance at all times.

14. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keeptools sharp and clean for best and safestperformance. Follow instructions for lubri-cating and changing accessories.

15. DISCONNECT TOOLS before servicingand changing accessories, such as blades,bits, cutters, and the like.

16. REDUCE THE RISK OF UNINTENTION-AL STARTING. Make sure switch is in offposition before plugging in.

17. USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES.Consult the owner’s manual for recom-mended accessories. The use of improperaccessories may cause risk of injury.

18. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before fur-ther use of the tool, a guard or other partthat is damaged should be carefullychecked to determine that it will operateproperly and perform its intended function.Check for alignment of moving parts, bind-ing of moving parts, breakage of parts,mounting, and any other conditions thatmay affect its operation. A guard or otherpart that is damaged should be properlyrepaired or replaced.

19. NEVER LEAVE TOOL RUNNING UNAT-TENDED. TURN POWER OFF. Don’tleave tool until it comes to a complete stop.

Additional Safety Instructions For Bandsaws

No list of safety guidelines can be com-plete. Every shop environment is different.Always consider safety first, as it applies toyour individual working conditions. Usethis and other machinery with caution andrespect. Failure to do so could result inserious personal injury, damage to equip-ment or poor work results.

7. ALWAYS FEED STOCK EVENLY ANDSMOOTHLY. Do not force or twist bladewhile cutting, especially when sawingsmall radii.

8. THIS MACHINE IS NOT DESIGNED TOCUT METAL or other material exceptwood.

9. BLADE SHOULD BE RUNNING AT FULLSPEED before beginning a cut.

10. DO NOT MANUALLY STOP OR SLOWBLADE after turning the saw off. Allow it tocome to a complete stop before you leaveit unattended.

11. ALL INSPECTIONS, ADJUSTMENTS,AND MAINTENANCE ARE TO BE DONEWITH THE POWER OFF and the plugpulled from the outlet. Wait for all movingparts to come to a complete stop.

12. HABITS – GOOD AND BAD – ARE HARDTO BREAK. Develop good habits in yourshop and safety will become secondnature to you.

1. DO NOT OPERATE WITH DULL ORBADLY WORN BLADES. Dull bladesrequire more effort to use and are difficultto control. Inspect blades before each use.

2. NEVER POSITION FINGERS ORTHUMBS IN LINE WITH THE CUT.Serious personal injury could occur.

3. DO NOT OPERATE THIS BANDSAWWITHOUT WHEEL, PULLEY, ANDBLADE GUARDS IN PLACE.

4. WHEN REPLACING BLADES, make sureteeth face down toward the table. Theforce of the cut is always down. Make surethe blade is properly tensioned.

5. CUTS SHOULD ALWAYS BE FULLYSUPPORTED by the table or some type ofsupport fixture. Always support round stockin a V-block.

6. DO NOT BACK WORKPIECE AWAY fromthe blade while the saw is running. Planyour cuts so you always cut out of thewood. If you need to back the work out,turn the bandsaw off and wait for the bladeto come to a complete stop. Do not twist orput excessive stress on the blade whilebacking work away.

Like all power tools, there is danger asso-ciated with bandsaws. Accidents are fre-quently caused by lack of familiarity or fail-ure to pay attention. Use this tool withrespect and caution to lessen the possibil-ity of operator injury. If normal safety pre-cautions are overlooked or ignored, seriouspersonal injury may occur.

220V Operation

The motor supplied with the G1019Z can be oper-ated at either 110V or 220V. The motor comesprewired for 110V.

If converting to operate at 220V, a suitable 220Vplug must be wired in. Refer to the wiring diagraminsert supplied with this manual. When operatingat 220V, we recommend using a NEMA-style 6L-15 plug and outlet. See Figure 2. Check the elec-trical codes in your area for specifics on wiringrequirements.

Under normal use, the motor draws approximate-ly 6 amps @ 220V. We recommend a 10 amp cir-cuit breaker. This should be satisfactory for nor-mal use while providing enough protectionagainst damage caused by power surges.

SECTION 2: CIRCUIT REQUIREMENTS

110V Operation

The G1019Z Bandsaw motor is prewired to oper-ate at 110V. See Figure 1. Under normal 110Vuse, the motor draws approximately 12 amps. Werecommend a 15 amp circuit breaker or a 15 ampslow-blow fuse.

We also recommend that the circuit you useshould be dedicated, (i.e., the G1019Z shouldprovide the only draw from that circuit). If frequentcircuit failures occur when using the bandsaw,contact our Service Department or your localelectrical contractor.

Grounding

In the event of an electrical short, grounding pro-vides a path of least resistance for electric currentto reduce the risk of electric shock. This tool isequipped with an electric cord having an equip-ment-grounding conductor. The plug must beplugged into a matching outlet that is properlyinstalled and grounded in accordance with alllocal codes and ordinances.

Improper connections of the electrical-groundingconductor can result in risk of electric shock. Theconductor with green or green and yellow stripedinsulation is the electrical grounding conductor. Ifrepair or replacement of the electric cord or plugis necessary, do not connect the equipmentgrounding conductor to a live terminal.

Should it be necessary to use an extension cord,make sure the cord is rated Hard Service (gradeS) or better. Refer to chart in the SafetyInstructions section to determine the minimumgauge for the extension cord. The extension cordmust also contain a ground wire and plug pin.Always repair or replace extension cords whenthey become worn or damaged.

We do not recommend the use of extension cordson 220V equipment. It is much better to arrangethe placement of your equipment and the installedwiring to eliminate the need for extension cords.

Extension Cords

We have covered some basic electricalrequirements for the safe operation of yourBandsaw. These requirements are not nec-essarily comprehensive. You must be surethat your particular electrical configurationcomplies with local and state codes. Ensurecompliance by checking with your localmunicipality or a licensed electrician.

This equipment must begrounded. Verify that anyexisting electrical outletand circuit you intend toplug into is actuallygrounded. Under no cir-cumstances should thegrounding pin from anythree-pronged plug beremoved. Serious injurymay occur.

When used accordingto the guidelines stated in this manual, you canexpect years of trouble-free, enjoyable operation,and proof of Grizzly’s commitment to customersatisfaction.

The Model G1019Z is intended for home andmedium-duty professional use. The G1019Z fea-tures cast iron construction for rigidity andstrength, a solid cast iron table, an open steelstand, fence and miter gauge. A 2" dust port and1⁄2" blade are also included. The electrical pack-age consists of a 3450 R.P.M., 1 H.P. capacitorstart motor, locking toggle switch and cord set. Allrunning parts utilize shielded ball bearings, whichrequire no lubrication for the life of the bearings.

We are also pleased to provide this manual withthe Model G1019Z. It was written to guide youthrough assembly, review safety considerations,and cover general operating procedures. Unpacking

The Model G1019Z Bandsaw is shipped from themanufacturer in a carefully packed carton. If youdiscover the machine is damaged after you’vesigned for delivery, please call Customer Serviceimmediately for advice.

Save the containers and all packing materials forpossible inspection by the carrier or their agent.Otherwise filing a freight claim can be difficult.

Clean up Site Considerations

The unpainted surfaces are coated with a waxy oilto protect them from corrosion during shipment.Remove this protective coating with a solventcleaner or citrus-based degreaser such asGrizzly’s G7895 Degreaser. Avoid chlorine-basedsolvents as they may damage painted surfacesshould they come in contact. Always follow theusage instructions on the product you choose forclean up.

FLOOR LOADYour G1019Z Bandsaw represents a moderatelylarge weight load in a small footprint. Most com-mercial or home shop floors should be sufficientto carry the weight of the G1019Z. If you questionthe strength of your floor, you can opt to reinforceit.

WORKING CLEARANCESWorking clearances can be thought of as the dis-tances between machines and obstacles thatallow safe operation of every machine without lim-itation. Consider existing and anticipated machineneeds, size of material to be processed througheach machine, and space for auxiliary standsand/or work tables. Also consider the relativeposition of each machine to one another for effi-cient material handling. Be sure to allow yourselfsufficient room to safely run your machines in anyforeseeable operation.

LIGHTING AND OUTLETSLighting should be bright enough to eliminateshadow and prevent eye strain. Electrical circuitsshould be dedicated or large enough to handlecombined motor amp loads. Outlets should belocated near each machine so power or extensioncords are not obstructing high-traffic areas. Besure to observe local electrical codes for properinstallation of new lighting, outlets, or circuits.

Do not use gasoline orother petroleum-basedsolvents to clean with.They have low flashpoints which makesthem extremely flamma-ble. A risk of explosionand burning exists ifthese products areused. Serious personalinjury may occur.

Do not smoke while usingsolvents. A risk of explo-sion or fire exists and mayresult in serious personalinjury.

Many of the solventscommonly used to cleanmachinery can be toxicwhen inhaled or ingest-ed. Always work in well-ventilated areas far frompotential ignition sourceswhen dealing with sol-vents. Use care when dis-posing of waste rags andtowels to be sure they donot create fire or environ-mental hazards.

Make your shop “child safe.”Ensure that your workplaceis inaccessible to children byclosing and locking allentrances when you areaway. Never allow visitors inyour shop when assembling,adjusting or operating equip-ment.

SECTION 4: ASSEMBLY

Beginning Assembly

Most of your G1019Z Bandsaw has been assem-bled at the factory, but some parts must beassembled or installed after delivery. We haveorganized the assembly process into steps.Please follow along in the order presented here.

TOOLS REQUIRED: You will need an adjustablesquare, 10mm, 12mm and 14mm open endwrenches and a Phillips® and regular screwdriver.

Keep clothing rolled upand out of the way ofmachinery and keephair pulled back.

Wear safety glasses dur-ing the entire assemblyprocess. Failure to com-ply may result in seriouspersonal injury.

Some metal parts mayhave sharp edges onthem after they areformed. Please examinethe edges of all metalparts before handlingthem. Failure to do socould result in injury.

Disconnect power to themachine when perform-ing any maintenance orassembly. Failure to dothis may result in seriouspersonal injury.

Stand

To begin stand assembly, keep all the stand partswithin easy reach. To ease assembly, build thestand upside down on a bench and then place itupright on the floor.

1. Place the stand top upside down on yourbench.

2. Attach each of the four legs to the stand topwith carriage bolts, washers and nuts pro-vided. Do not over tighten. The legs attachto the outside of the stand top. See Figure3.

3. Position the two upper stand braces and fin-ish installing the carriage bolts. Do not overtighten.

4. Attach each of the four braces to the standlegs with carriage bolts, washers and nutsprovided. Do not over tighten. The bracesattach to the inside of the legs. See Figure 3.

5. Press one 5⁄16"-18 x 1⁄2" hex bolt into eachrubber foot. Use the washers and nuts sup-plied to attach a rubber foot onto each of thestand legs.

6. Flip the stand right side up and place on thefloor. Check to see if the stand is symmetri-cal from two adjacent sides. Adjust if nec-essary and tighten all nuts.

Motor

The motor attaches to the back of the lower band-saw unit. To install the motor:

1. Slide the motor pulley onto the motor shaftso the larger diameter pulley is closest tothe motor. Line up the keyways and slidethe key into the keyway. Insert the setscrewand tighten. Pulley alignment will be done inStep 5.

2. Support the motor and insert the motor pul-ley through the hole in the back of the band-saw unit.

3. Align the mounting holes and attach each ofthree cap screws, lock washers and fenderwashers through the bandsaw unit and intothe motor. Leave the cap screws loose formotor adjustment. See Figure 5.

4. Slip the V-belt onto the grooves of the wheeland motor pulleys. Remember, this is a twospeed bandsaw. Be sure that the pulleysyou choose are aligned. Do not try to forcethe V-belt onto non-aligned grooves. See“Changing Speeds” in the Operations sec-tion to select the proper speed.

Cap Screws

1. Place the bandsaw on the stand and alignthe four holes in the base over the fourmounting holes in the stand.

2. Secure the bandsaw base to the stand withthe four hex bolts, nuts and washers provid-ed. See Figure 4.

Bandsaw Unit

This bandsaw is relatively heavy and awk-ward to handle. We strongly recommendthat you get assistance. The bandsaw unitis also very unstable until it is permanentlymounted to the stand. Use care so thebandsaw unit does not tip.

The switch is premounted on the bandsaw unitand features a lock-out key. To lock-out theswitch, move the switch to the off position andthen pull out the key. See Figure 7a. The band-saw cannot be turned on without first inserting thekey back into the switch.

Switch5. Check for proper pulley alignment by plac-ing a straightedge on the outside edge ofthe upper pulley so that it overlaps themotor pulley. If the straightedge touchesboth pulleys evenly, the pulleys are aligned.If the straightedge does not touch both pul-leys evenly, the pulleys are not aligned.Loosen one or both of the pulley setscrewson their shafts and slide the pulleys towardalignment. Remember to retighten thesetscrews when finished. See Figure 6.

6. Adjust V-Belt tension by sliding the motoralong the mounting slots. Proper tension isachieved when the belt can be deflectedroughly 1/2" with moderate finger pressure.

7. Tighten the socket head cap screwssecurely. Recheck belt tension and pulleyalignment.

To connect the switch to the motor:

1. Plug the male end into the female end asshown in Figure 7b.

6. Secure the table to the support bracket bysecuring the two trunnion knobs onto thetrunnion bolts. Remember to position thetable so that the miter slot is to the right ofthe blade as you face the front of the band-saw. See Figure 10.

7. Place the table insert in the table top andplace the tapered pin so it fits snugly in thehole on the side of the table. Do not useexcessive force.

NOTICEThe tapered table pin must be in position inthe table when operating the bandsaw. Thismaintains the table surface flush with no edgefor the workpiece to catch on.

Table and TableSupport Bracket

The bandsaw table secures to the table trunnions.The trunnions mount to the table support bracketand the table support bracket mounts to the band-saw unit. The trunnions are premounted to thetable. To mount the bandsaw table:

1. Remove the two table support bracketmounting bolts from the bandsaw body.

2. Insert the alignment pin that positions thetable support bracket to the bandsaw body.Place the table bracket on the body over thealignment pin and secure it to the bandsawwith the two bolts. See Figure 8.

3. Thread the locknut onto the table stop boltand thread the bolt into the table supportbracket. See Figure 9. Bolt adjustments arecovered in the “Table Adjustments” sectionbeginning on page 18.

4. Remove tapered pin from the table.

5. Slip the table past the blade through thetable slot, rotate the table 90°, and set thetable trunnions onto the bracket. Make surethe trunnion bolts drop through the supportbracket.

Fence

When installing the fence, notice that the frontedge of the table has two threaded holes. Theseholes accept the round spacers and socket headcap screws that attach the fence rail to the table.

1. Secure the fence rail to the table with thetwo socket head cap screws and spacersprovided. Ensure that the slot in the raillines up with the miter gauge slot in thetable. See Figure 11.

2. Mount the fence on the left side of the bladeby setting the fence onto the table and rail.

3. Insert and tighten the fence locking knob tosecure the fence at the desired distancefrom the blade.

A 1⁄2" blade is included with the bandsaw and isalready installed on the machine. Refer to “BladeTensioning” and “Blade Tracking” on pages 16and 17 before starting the machine. Also, theOperations section contains instructions onselecting and changing blades.

This concludes the assembly process. Please DONOT operate this saw until you have read thisentire manual.

SECTION 5: ADJUSTMENTS

General control and adjustment locations areshown in Figures 12, 13 & 14 and are describedbelow.

A. These two knobs secure the upper andlower wheel covers. The covers should onlybe opened to change a blade or make anadjustment to blade tracking. Always dis-connect power before opening.

B. This is the paddle switch that controls themotor. To turn the motor on, flip the paddleto the up position. To turn the motor off,push the paddle to the down position.

C. This knob locks the rip fence in position.

D. These trunnion knobs are used to lock thetable in position.

E. The miter gauge slides in the milled groovein the table and can be set at 45° left andright. Use the miter gauge for crosscuttingand miter-cutting.

Now, direct your attention to the controls locatedaround the backside of the upper cover of thesaw. See Figure 13.

F. This knob is used to control blade tension.Turning clockwise increases tension;counter-clockwise decreases tension.

G. This knob controls blade tracking. Note thatthe knob has a locknut to lock tracking inplace.

The controls for the blade guide are shown inFigure 14. The blade guide should always bepositioned so there is minimal space between theguide and the top of the workpiece.

H. This knob locks the upper blade guideassembly in position. The upper guideshould be adjusted to within 1⁄4" of the work-piece for optimum blade support. Do notoperate bandsaw without locking the guidepost knob.

I. These spring-loaded bolts apply pressureagainst the U-clamp to prevent the guidepost from dropping when the upper bladeguide knob is loosened.

Proper blade tension is important for optimumbandsaw performance. See Figure 13 for band-saw tension controls. To increase blade tension,turn the blade tension knob clockwise. To reduceblade tension, turn the blade tension knobcounter-clockwise.

Since a variety of blades will work well with thissaw, final blade tension ultimately depends on thetype and size of blade you use. Thin bladesrequire less tension than wide blades. Too muchtension will result in blade breakage.

Do not make adjustments while the band-saw is running. Ensure that the switch is off,power is disconnected, and moving partshave stopped before making adjustments.Check adjustments while power is still dis-connected by manually turning the bandsawwheel by hand.

A properly tensioned blade will track the cuttingline accurately and the cut will be smoother.

Proper blade tension can best be achieved bydetermining the amount of blade deflection:

1. Ensure that the power is off and the saw isunplugged. Raise the upper guide assem-bly all the way and lock in place.

2. Press, with moderate pressure, on the faceof the blade with your thumb.

3. Turn the tensioning knob to adjust theamount of tension. The blade should deflectabout 1/4".

If the tension seems correct, make all of the otheradjustments to the saw and test run it. If the bladeis not cutting properly, the tension may be incor-rect and readjustment may be needed.

Remember to reduce the blade tension when thebandsaw is not in use, this will help prevent pre-mature breakage of the blade and deformation ofthe rubber tires.

Blade Tracking

The bandsaw blade is dangerously sharp.Use extreme caution when working near thesaw blade. Failure to exercise care couldresult in severe injury.

Whenever changing a blade or adjusting tensionand tracking, the upper and lower blade supportbearings and guide blocks must be re-adjusted.Always adjust the assemblies away from theblade before installing a new blade or makingblade tracking adjustments. After blade tensionand tracking are set correctly, re-adjust the upperand lower support bearings and guide blockassemblies into position. See Figure 15 for upperblade guide and Figure 16 for lower blade guide.

Support Bearings

The support bearings back-up the blade duringthe sawing operation. To adjust the support bear-ings, loosen the thumbscrews securing the sup-port bearing shafts. See Figure 17. Adjust theshafts in or out so that the upper and lower sup-port bearings are within 1/64" of the back edge ofthe blade. Retighten the thumbscrews.

Blade Guides

The blade should track so the body of the blade iscentered on the upper wheel and tire. The rubbertire is slightly crowned in the middle which helpskeep the blade centered and avoids having theteeth of the blade come in contact with the tirematerial. See Figure 13 for bandsaw trackingcontrols.

To adjust blade tracking:

1. Disconnect the bandsaw from the powersource.

2. Adjust the upper and lower guide blocksand support bearings away from the blade.

3. Loosen the locknut on the tracking controlknob and turn the knob clockwise orcounter-clockwise while turning the upperwheel by hand. When turning the wheel by

hand, ensure that there are no sharpedges to cut your hand.

4. Turn the upper wheel and tracking knobuntil the blade is centered on the upperwheel and tire. Turn the wheel at least threemore full turns to ensure that the blade istracking in its final position.

5. Retighten the locknut and double checkblade tracking.

6. Install the upper wheel cover.

Guide Blocks

For optimum support, the guide block assembliesshould be adjusted so they are just behind thegullet line (the hollow points) of the blade. Toadjust the guide block assemblies, loosen thethumbscrews securing the guide block yokeassemblies. Move in or out in relation to the bladegullets. Once adjusted, retighten the thumbscrew.

Now adjust the guide blocks. Loosen the guideblock thumbscrews and adjust each block so it isabout 0.004" from the blade. This is about thesame thickness as a piece of typing paper.Retighten the thumbscrews and turn the upperwheel by hand through a complete revolution ofthe blade length to ensure that the blade weldpasses through the guide blocks unhindered.

Eccentric Guide Post

There is an eccentric on the lower end of theguide post where the the guide assembly attach-es. This is held to the post by a setscrew and canbe loosened and tightened with an Allen® wrench.Figure 15A.

The eccentric allows the upper blade guideassembly to be moved to accommodate variousblade sizes and wheel configurations.

Loosen the knob on the guide post. Rotate theguide block assembly on the guide post so theblade is directly in the center of the guide blocklegs. Retighten the knob and make sure theassembly didn’t move. If needed, adjust theeccentric on the post to make the assemblyaccommodate the blade.

Table Adjustments

The bandsaw table will tilt left 10° and right 45°from horizontal. When tilting the table to the right,the positive stop adjusting bolt automaticallyindexes the table perpendicular to the blade.

To tilt the table to the right:

1. Loosen the two trunnion knobs below thetable trunnions. See Figure 18 for location.

2. Position the table to the desired angle.Refer to the angle gauge on the front tablesupport trunnion.

3. Tighten the trunnion knobs.

To tilt the table to the left:

1. Loosen the two trunnion knobs below thetable trunnions.

2. Tilt the table to the right enough to gainclearance to the positive stop bolt. Loosenthe lock nut, then remove the positive stopbolt.

3. The table will now tilt left to approximately10°. See Figure 19.

4. When the left tilt operation is complete, rein-stall the positive stop bolt.

Trunnion Knobs

To adjust the positive stop so the table will be per-pendicular (90°) to the blade:

1. Loosen two trunnion knobs and the locknutsecuring the positive stop adjusting bolt.

2. Raise the upper blade guide assembly andplace a 6" adjustable square or try-squareon the table against the blade. See Figure20. Adjust the positive stop adjusting bolt sothat the table is positioned at a 90° angle tothe blade.

3. Secure the trunnion knobs and lock the pos-itive adjusting bolt by tightening the locknut.Ensure that the bolt does not turn whiletightening the locknut. Set the angle pointerto zero for future reference.

Blade Lead

Blade lead occurs when you are attempting astraight cut and the blade wanders to one side orthe other. This usually happens (1) if the bladetension isn’t correct, (2) if the teeth are dull on oneside, or (3) if the teeth are heavier on one side ofthe blade than the other.

If you don’t have time to switch blades or readjustyour bandsaw, you can temporarily compensatefor blade lead by slightly rotating your table. To dothis, rotate the table to match the angle that yourblade is leading. Your purpose in doing this is to“trick” your bandsaw into cutting straight.

If you are having blade lead problems with yourmiter gauge, do the same thing by slightly rotatingyour table so the miter slot matches the angle thatthe blade is leading.

The table should also be 90° to the back of theblade. If the table is not perpendicular to the backof the blade, shim the table in the desired direc-tion with washers. Remove the trunnion bolts andadd washers between the table and trunnion sothe table tilts in the desired direction. Electricalwashers are very thin and will allow fine adjust-ment.

The table can be shifted side to side to properlyalign the miter slot and the blade:

1. Loosen the 6 trunnion bolts underneath thetable.

2. Use the largest width blade availableinstalled in the machine. Lay a straightedgealong side the blade and inspect it closely tomake sure it is parallel to the blade. Makesure there is no deflection of the blade fromthe straightedge. Measure the distancebetween the edge of the miter gauge slotand the straightedge at points A and B. SeeFigure 21. Distance A should be approxi-mately equal to distance B. Adjust the tableslightly until these distances are equal.

3. Secure the table and ensure that unwantedshifting did not occur during retightening.After all adjustments are made, cut a testpiece of wood using the miter gauge andmeasure to see if the cut was square. If itwasn’t, adjust the table accordingly until youcan cut a test piece of wood square.

Fence operation is controlled by the threadedknob located on the front of the fence. The knob,when screwed tight, locks the fence to the frontrail. To change the fence position, loosen theknob and slide the fence along the rail. Use a tapemeasure or ruler to position the fence from theblade.

Loosen the motor mounting bolts and move themotor accordingly to slacken the V-Belt. It shouldnow be easy to move the belt onto the pulleys ofchoice. Adjust belt tension and check the align-ment according to the instructions in theAdjustments Section. Refer to Figure 22 to deter-mine which pulley pair is required for the desiredblade speed.

Once assembly is complete, adjustments aredone to your satisfaction and tools are safely putaway, you are ready to test run the machine.

Turn on the power supply at the main panel.Press the switch in the START position. Makesure that your finger is poised on the switch topress in the STOP position, just in case there’s aproblem. The bandsaw should run smoothly, withlittle or no vibration or rubbing noises. Strange orunnatural noises should be investigated and cor-rected before operating the machine further.

If you cannot easily locate the source of anunusual noise or vibration, contact our ServiceDepartment for help.

Test Run

DO NOT attempt to investigate or adjust themachine while it is running. Wait until themachine is turned off, unplugged and allworking parts have come to a stop beforeyou do anything! Serious personal injurywill result.

SECTION 6: OPERATIONS

There are many interrelated adjustment points toconsider when operating this type of saw.Therefore, cutting results can be somewhatunpredictable if some or all of the crucial adjust-ments are neglected. Here are a few simplethings you can do to increase the predictability ofyour bandsaw’s performance:

1. Always use a sharp, high-quality blade.Although you might save a few dollars ini-tially, buying a cheap blade will give youcheap results. As a rule, spending morenow will save you money later.

2. Use the right blade for the job. Resawingwith a 1/8" blade or doing scrollwork with a3/4" blade are extreme examples of usingthe wrong blade for the job.

3. Allow the saw to cut. Don’t force the work-piece into the blade. When cutting curves orirregular shapes, remember that whilenegotiating a curve, the blade should still becutting the wood. Simply turning the work-piece will only bind the blade and couldcause it to break.

4. Maintain your bandsaw in top condition.See Section 7 of this manual for mainte-nance procedures.

When removing or installing blades, make surethe power is disconnected and moving parts havecome to a complete stop.

To remove the blade:

1. Back guide block assemblies and supportbearings away from the blade and raise theguide post up and away from the table.

2. Release blade tension by turning the bladetension knob counter-clockwise.

3. Remove table insert and tapered table pin.

4. Remove top and bottom wheel covers.

5. Loosen the two blade guard mounting boltsand slide the guard off of the mountingstuds.

6. Pull blade straight off the wheels, rotate 90°and feed along the table through the tableslot.

To install the blade:

1. Hold blade in both hands so the teeth of theblade in your right hand are pointing down.

2. Feed blade into the slot in the table. Turnthe blade 90° and position over the top andbottom wheels. The teeth of the blade mustbe pointing down toward the table.

3. Apply tension to the blade by turning thetension control knob. Rotate the upperwheel slowly by hand as tension is appliedto allow the blade to center itself on thewheel. Adjust tracking if needed. See“Blade Tension” and “Blade Tracking” inSection 5 for details.

4. Re-adjust upper and lower blade guidesand support bearings as stated in theAdjustment section.

Changing Blades

A bandsaw blade is a delicate piece of steel thatis subjected to tremendous strain. Be sure youuse quality blades of the proper width for the var-ious types of cutting operations.

Always use the widest blade possible for theworkpiece you are cutting. Use narrow bladesonly for sawing small, abrupt curves and for fine,delicate work. Bandsaw blades can be purchasedwelded, set and sharpened ready-for-use frommost saw shops. We also supply bandsaw bladesin widths of 1/8", 3⁄16", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", and 3/4", for thissaw. Please refer to our current catalog for pricesand ordering information.

Always use good quality saw blades that aresharp and choose the right blade for the job.Using a dull or poor quality blade, or the wrongsize or type, often produces unsatisfactory results

Many conditions may cause blade breakage.Breakage is, in some cases, unavoidable, since itis the natural result of the peculiar stresses towhich bandsaw blades are subjected. Bladebreakage is also due to avoidable causes.Avoidable breakage is most often the result ofpoor care or judgement on the part of the opera-tor. The most common causes of blade breakageare: (1) faulty alignment and adjustment of theguides; (2) forcing or twisting a wide blade arounda tight curve or short radius; (3) feeding too fast;(4) tooth dullness or absence of sufficient set; (5)excessive blade tension; (6) upper blade guideassembly set too high above the workpiece; (7)using a blade with a lumpy or improperly finishedweld; and (8), continuously running the bandsawwhen not in use.

The Grizzly G1019Z 14" Bandsaw uses 98"blades.

Ripping is the process of cutting a board into twoor more thinner boards, generally in a directionalong its length. The maximum board width thatcan be ripped is limited by the distance betweenthe blade and the support column. Maximum cut-ting width for this bandsaw is 141⁄4".

The important consideration when ripping is bladeselection. Generally, the wider the blade, the bet-ter. In most applications, a hook or skip tooth stylewill be sufficient. Also, since most ripped lumberwill be planed or sanded smooth, you can chooseblades with fewer teeth-per-inch. While bladeswith fewer teeth-per-inch produce rougher cuts,these types of blades offer larger gullet capacitiesfor clearing sawdust, produce less heat, and yieldmore horsepower per tooth.

To perform ripping operations:

1. The bandsaw must be adjusted correctly.See “Blade Tension” and “Blade Tracking”in Section 5.

2. The table must be square to the blade. See“Table Adjustment” in Section 5.

3. Use the widest blade available. The blademust also be in good condition.

4. Use a fence to guide work.

5. Draw a reference line on the edge of theboard.

When cutting curves, simultaneously feed andturn the stock carefully so that the blade followsthe layout line without being twisted. If a curve isso abrupt that it is necessary to repeatedly backup and cut a new kerf, use either a narrower bladeor a blade with more set.

Always make short cuts first, then proceed to thelonger cuts. Relief cuts will also reduce thechance that the blade will be pinched or twisted.Relief cuts are cuts made through the waste por-tion of the workpiece and are stopped at the lay-out line. As you cut along the layout line, wastewood is released from the workpiece, alleviatingany pressure on the back of the blade. Relief cutsalso make backing the workpiece out easier, ifneeded. Figure 24 lists blade widths and corre-sponding minimum radii each blade will cut.

Cutting CurvesStacked Cuts

One of the benefits of a bandsaw is its ability tocut multiple copies of a particular shape by stack-ing a number of workpieces together.

Before making stacked cuts, it is essential toensure that both the table and the blade are prop-erly adjusted to 90°. Otherwise, any error will becompounded with each piece cut from the top tothe bottom of the stack.

To complete a stacked cut:

1. Align your pieces from top to bottom toensure that each piece has adequate scrapto provide a clean, unhampered cut.

2. Using brads in the waste portion of eachpiece, secure all the pieces together.

3. Lay out the shape you intend to cut on theface of the top piece.

4. Make relief cuts perpendicular to the outlineof your intended shape in areas wherechanges in blade direction could pinch theblade against the wood.

5. Cut the stack as though you were cutting asingle piece. Follow your layout line with theblade kerf on the waste side of your line.

To resaw lumber, follow the procedure below:

1. The blade must be adjusted correctly andthe table must be square to the blade. SeeSection 5.

2. Use the widest blade that will fit this saw(3/4"). The blade must also be in good con-dition.

3. Use the fence or a pivot block to guide thework. If using a pivot block, clamp the blockto the table next to the fence at the desireddistance from the blade and mark the line ofcut on the workpiece. Follow the mark dur-ing cutting while using the pivot block as aguide.

4. Feed work slowly and evenly.

When using a fence to guide the board, the actu-al line of cut may not always be parallel to thefence. In fact, most bandsaw blades will not cutexactly parallel to the fence. There are usually anumber of reasons for this: teeth are set heavieron one side than the other, teeth are dull on oneside, or blade tension is too tight or too loose.

If the blade wanders off the line of cut when usingthe fence, consider using a pivot block.

IMPORTANT: Do not force the wood into theblade during cutting. This will distort the blade,cause excessive heat and often results in bladebreakage as well as miscut lumber.

Resawing

Resawing is the process of cutting a board alongits thickness into two or more thinner boards.Each new board is the same width and length asthe original board, but the thickness is less. Themaximum board width that can be resawn on thisbandsaw is 61/8".

Although the G1019Z Bandsaw was not specifi-cally designed for resawing, it is capable ofresawing, provided the saw is set up properly.Use common sense when resawing; attempting toresaw a board that is too wide or too dense mayput excessive strain on the blade and be unsafe.

Again, the important consideration when resawingis blade selection. When selecting a blade, keepin mind that a wider blade is generally easier tocontrol. The blade should be of high quality inorder to handle the increased stress. In mostapplications, a hook or skip tooth style will workfine. Also, since most resawn lumber will beplaned smooth, you can choose blades with fewerteeth per inch (3 to 6). These types of blades offerlarger gullet capacities for clearing sawdust. Theyalso produce less heat build up and yield morehorsepower per tooth.

NOTE: When operating with wide blades, run thebandsaw at the slowest speed.

SECTION 7: MAINTENANCE

Bearings

V-Belt

Since all bearings are shielded and permanentlylubricated, no maintenance is required on them.If, after a period of time you notice a distinct noiseor rumble coming from a shielded bearing, or thebearing journal is hot to the touch after use, it willbe time to replace the shielded bearing assem-bly(s). Please contact our Customer Service num-ber to order replacement bearings or to makearrangements to send your bandsaw back for ser-vice.

Inspect V-belt regularly for tension and wear.Replace when necessary. Check pulleys toensure that they are properly aligned and secure-ly tightened. See “Motor Assembly” in Section 4for proper tension and pulley alignment proce-dures.

Regular periodic maintenance on your ModelG1019Z Bandsaw will ensure its optimum perfor-mance. Make a habit of inspecting your bandsaweach time you use it. Check for the following con-ditions and repair or replace when necessary.

1. Loose mounting bolts

2. Worn switch

3. Worn or damaged cords and plugs

4. Damaged V-belt

5. Any other condition that could hamper thesafe operation of this machine.

Always perform any maintenance with the poweroff and the machine unplugged.

General

Table

The table can be kept slippery and rust-free withregular applications of talcum powder. Rub thepowder into the table top with either a felt brick(i.e.-common chalk board eraser) or a chamoiscloth. There are many after-market spray applica-tions available to protect the table surface andease material handling. See a current GrizzlyIndustrial catalog for these types of after-marketproducts.

Disconnect power to themachine when perform-ing any maintenance orassembly. Failure to dothis may result in seriouspersonal injury.
