DELPHOS — This year’s Kiwanis Club of Delphos Fourth of July celebration promises to offer something for everyone — and a lot of its free!

Fourth of July Chair Cindy Metzger said the two-day event is packed with favorites.

“We’ve got Pete Schlegel, the Slice of Delphos pizza taste-off con-test and duck races on Thursday and the full schedule of events on Friday,” Metzger said. “From the Optimist Fishing Derby and Firecracker Bike Ride to softball, baseball, volleyball and corn hole, there will be activity at the park all day. We’ve even extended the hours on Friday to midnight because it’s the weekend.”

With the goal of making sure everyone can enjoy the festivities, rides will be free from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday.

“This celebra-tion is to bring the community together with family-fr iendly activities and that will include free rides Friday after-noon so everyone has the opportu-nity to come out and enjoy the day while we thank them for support-ing us.”

The Fourth of July Celebration is the Kiwanis Club’s major fund-raiser and proceeds have assisted the organization in revitalizing the play-grounds at Stadium, Waterworks

and Garfield parks, landscaping and mulching the parks and improv-ing the volleyball courts at Stadium

Park.“We hope all

the people who come home for reunions and fam-ily get-togethers join us for this great opportunity to come together and raise a little money to put back into the communi-ty,” Metzger said.

The event goes on rain or shine with the grand

finale a fireworks show at 10 p.m. on Friday. the show is Metzger’s favorite part of the two-day festival.

“I am a fireworks junkie,” she said. “I love to watch the little kids’

faces when they go off and see the families have fun.”

Metzger said the group has honed preparing and tearing down for the Fourth activities to a science.

“We have such a diverse group of people in terms of professionals,” she said. “We have electricians, con-tractors, insurance agents, human resource people, marketing special-ists and engineers. We get things done.”

A new storage building purchased by the group several years ago has also trimmed set-up and tear-down time.

“With everything in one place, it’s more organized and we don’t some pieces here and others there. It takes us a while to set everything up but tear down is only about three hours. It’s great because by the end of the second day, we’re all pooped.”

The Midwest’s Pete Schlegel is the story of a farm boy’s dream come true. Raised on a Paulding dairy farm, Schlegel listened to country radio shows while milking the cows. As a fourth grader, he received a guitar from his dad. That simple gift a long time ago would become Schlegel’s passion and livelihood.

While he had always participated in school choirs, musicals, and the local karaoke circuit, it was prompting from family and friends that enticed Schlegel to start a band. With his popularity on the rise and the rigors of touring, Schlegel would have to choose between his normal life as an ex-Ohio State Trooper and EMS helicopter pilot and his childhood dream. He left the family farm in March 2002 and headed to Nashville, where he began working with producer Clyde Brooks.

Brooks produced his debut album “Strong Stuff.” A total of three nationally-charted singles were released from “Strong Stuff,” including “Short For Gone,” “Leavin’ Ain’t As Easy As It Sounds” and “It Takes A Whole Lot Of Liquor To

Like Her” that have exposed Schlegel to a wider audience in the United States as well as Europe. “Leavin’ Ain’t As Easy As It Sounds” dominated the interna-tional chart for over seven weeks and became the No. 1 single in Germany. The “It Takes A Whole Lot Of Liquor To Like Her” video was chosen as a Hot Pick Video on Great American Country (GAC) television and received substantial video spins on VH1 Country.

Schlegel completed his sophomore album “I’m Not Listening” under the direction of Nashville producer Ted Hewitt. The first single, “Alcohol Abuse,” was released mid summer of 2006. His last single and video, “You Can’t Bring Her Back” was released in 2008. The videos for “Alcohol Abuse” “It Takes A Whole Lotta Liquor To Like Her” and “You Can’t Bring Her Back” can still be seen on GAC and CMT.

After three years of extensive touring from 2005-07 with Daryle Singletary and Jeff Carson, Schlegel came off the road in 2008 to operate his family farm and family owned businesses.

After a four-year break from heavy touring, Schlegel has reunited with some of his long term band mates and has kicked off the “Hitting The Honky Tonks” and “Keeping It Country” tour for 2014. He has started working on his fourth studio album which was released in April. “That’s What I Believe” was pro-duced by Grammy-nominated Nashville producer Greg Cole and features 11 cuts. Schlegel chose some of his all time favorite “true” country music songs in addition to some new material for radio release and for his “Tru Fans.”

DELPHOS — The traveling “Slice of Delphos” pizza taste-off trophy is up for grabs.

The event, set for 6 p.m. July 3 at the Stadium Park Shelterhouse, kicks off the Kiwanis Fourth of July celebration and offers participants a chance to pick the best-tasting

pizza in Delphos.The cost is $10 and includes five slices of

pizza and two drink tickets.Participating businesses are: Hickory Pit

BBQ, Jack’s Pizza, Niedecken’s Carry Out, Pizza Hut and The Topp Chalet. Niedecken’s (shown above accepting the trophy in 2013, has held the trophy for two years.

A new trophy will be awarded this year for judge’s choice.

Music will be provided by Austin Paxson and the Kiwanis Beer Garden on the tennis courts will be open.
