Overstrand preschools get winter­warming gifts 

To help stave off the winterchill, children of three pre-schools in the Overstrandwere the happy recipients of awoollen beanie and scarf fromthe Independent Municipaland Allied Trade Union (IMA-TU).

Rather than the pool of funds,derived from private telephonecalls made by IMATU membersover a period of time, being allo-cated to an event for their enjoy-ment, a mandate was given to theIMATU Committee by its mem-bers to furnish the needs of a com-munity project.

To this end, Mayor NicoletteBotha-Guthrie was approachedfor her input on where shethought the money, R6 000, couldbest be utilised.

Three preschools were identi-fied and the money was used tobuy packs of beanies and scarvesfor the children concerned.

The three schools, visited lastThursday, were the VrolikeVinkies in Mount Pleasant, Siya-bulela in Kleinmond and DieKleine Gansies in Gansbaai.

In her address to the childrenand teachers the Mayor said, “Iam extremely passionate aboutEarly Childhood Development. Ifwe focus our attention on theneeds of children at this stage oftheir learning, then they will beadequately prepared by the timethey start school. As future lead-ers of our country we are duty-bound to ensure the children areequipped to assume their rightfulplace in society.”

Francois Willemse, chairper-son of IMATU Western Capeechoed those sentiments: “Ourmembers are actively involved incommunity driven projects. Wefeel that by ploughing back intoour communities in this way wewill inevitably reap the benefitsof a better social order.”

SLEEPING BAGS DO­NATED: The Hermanus Night Shelter Association distributed heavy duty vinyl  sleeping bags  to  the homeless community on Tuesday 26 May. These weatherproof and water­proof sleeping bags are made  from recycled bill­boards by a company  in Cape Town and are called Street Sleepers.  Ja­co Nell  (left) and Dr LindaDaneel  (right)  from  the Night Shelter Association hand over sleeping bags to Johan Kukkuk and Nadia Odendal.
