Profession-Wide Awards and HonorstHe reMIngton Honor MeDAl the remington Honor Medal, named for eminent community pharmacist, manufacturer, and educator Joseph P. remington (1847–1918), was established in 1918 to recognize distinguished service on behalf of American pharmacy during the preceding years, culminating in the past year, or during a long period of outstanding activity or fruitful achievement.

Marilyn K. Speedie, BSPharm, PhD, was selected in recognition of the professional achievements, innovations, and advancements she has contributed to academic pharmacy practice. As Dean of the University of Minnesota college of Pharmacy, Speedie led the design of a curriculum that values leadership skills, clinical knowledge, understanding of delivery systems, and community advocacy and championed efforts to provide mentorship to students and faculty alike. As President of the American Association of colleges of Pharmacy (AAcP), she adopted a platform of leadership that influenced the revision of the organization’s mission statement describing academia’s

role in advancing the practice of pharmacy. Speedie received her BSPharm and PhD from Purdue University.

HUgo H. ScHAefer AWArDthe Hugo H. Schaefer Award was established in 1964 to recognize APhA members who have made outstanding voluntary contributions to society, the profession of pharmacy, and APhA.

Leonard L. Edloe, BSPharm, MDiv, PharmD, was selected in recognition of his many contributions to the pro-fession of pharmacy and his commitment to community and public service. While working as a community pharmacist and pharmacy owner for more than 40 years, edloe remained committed to the profession and his patients through dedicated service to a number of organizations, including the APhA Board of trustees, APhA foundation Board of Directors, Mid-Atlantic Affiliate of the American Heart Association, Board of the Virginia commonwealth University Health System Authority, and many others. He previously received the Bowl of Hygeia

Award, the terrence Burroughs leadership Award, and the Virginia retailer of the Year Award. edloe received his BSPharm from Howard University, MDiv from Virginia Union University, and PharmD from the University of florida.

HUBert H. HUMPHreY AWArDthe Hubert H. Humphrey Award was established in 1978 to recognize APhA members who have made major contributions in government and/or legislative service at the local, state, or national level.

Senator Earl L. “Buddy” Carter, RPh, was selected in recognition of his commitment to community and public service in the state of georgia. In addition to working as a community pharmacist and pharmacy owner, carter served his community as city councilman and Mayor and later served in the georgia House of representatives. He was elected to the state Senate in 2009 and recently announced his candidacy for the U.S. House of representatives. carter received his BSPharm from the University of georgia.

this award recognizes an individual pharmacist who actively contributes to the community through his or her voluntary involve-ment in the political process. nominees must be active members of APhA and a state pharmacy association. the government affairs activity in which the recipient participated must have raised pharmacists’ awareness of the political process, improved the pharmacy profession and the political process, and improved service and education to the public. This award will not be presented in 2014.

gooD goVernMent StUDent PHArMAcISt-of-tHe-YeAr AWArDSupported by the APhA Political Action Committee Board of Governors

this award, established in 2004, recognizes a student pharmacist who actively promotes the value of advocating for the profession and organizes student pharmacist grassroots activity within his or her chapter. nominees must be active members of the APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA–ASP) and a state pharmacy association. the government affairs activity for which the recipient was nominated must have raised student pharmacists’ awareness of current state and federal issues and made a positive impact on the pharmacy profession.

Daniel Kudryashov was selected in recognition of his passion for the advancement of the profession through advocacy and his engagement with student pharmacists and pharmacy practitioners in grassroots efforts through-out california. His leadership in several initiatives with the california Pharmacists Association and his student advocacy efforts contributed directly to the passage of several state legislative initiatives, including one that recognizes pharmacists as providers. Kudryashov is currently a third-year student pharmacist at the University of Southern california (USc) School of Pharmacy; he is also a pharmacy intern at the Keck Hospital of USc.

HonorArY MeMBerSHIPHonorary membership in the American Pharmacists Association is conferred by the APhA Board of trustees upon individuals, either within the profession of pharmacy or outside of it, whose activities and achievements have had a significant impact on public health, the profession, and its practitioners.

N. Lee Rucker, MSPH, was selected in recognition of her sustained contributions to medication safety and patient advocacy. An expert in pharmaceutical policy, rucker has experience in public policy and advocacy roles for many groups, including those serving the needs of physicians, patients, and the pharmaceutical indus-try; in addition, she formerly served APhA as Associate Director of government Affairs. She currently serves as Principal and founder of enhance Value, a health policy consulting firm. rucker is a graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and earned her MSPH at the University of north carolina, chapel Hill.

Benjamin Jacobs was selected in recognition of his visionary leadership, guidance, and support of APhA in the redevelopment of APhA’s Headquarters building. Jacobs is Senior Advisor and founder of the JBg companies; he has 50 years of experience at JBg in the acquisition, development, ownership, and management of commercial, hospitality, retail, and residential real estate. He will be recognized formally during an upcoming meeting of the APhA Board of trustees.

HONORARy PRESiDENtthe Honorary President of the American Pharmacists Association is nominated by the APhA Board of trustees and elected by the APhA membership in recognition of a lifetime of distinguished and dedicated public service and contributions to the profession.

theodore G. tong, PharmD, FAPhA, was elected in recognition of his lifelong commitment as a scholar and advocate for the profession and for student pharmacists. He serves as Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs and as Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Arizona college of Pharmacy. His service to the profession has been recognized with his receiving the Bowl of Hygeia Award, the Phi lambda Sigma national leadership Award, and the APhA–ASP outstanding chapter Advisor Award. tong is a former President of APhA–APrS and member of the APhA Board of trustees. He received BS

degrees from the University of Southern california and oregon State University and his PharmD from the University of california, San francisco (UcSf).

glorIA nIeMeYer frAncKe leADerSHIP Mentor AWArDthis award recognizes an APhA member who has promoted and encouraged pharmacists to attain leadership positions with-in pharmacy through example as a role model and mentor. the pharmacist for whom the award is named—gloria niemeyer francke, PharmD—personally exemplified the award’s criteria. Dr. francke, 1986 APhA Honorary President and 1987 remington Honor Medalist, inspired and mentored future leaders throughout her illustrious pharmacy career.

Ralph L. Saroyan, Pharm BS, was selected in recognition of his exceptional leadership and mentorship of phar-macists and student pharmacists during his 50-year career, the majority of which he spent serving at the University of the Pacific. A dedicated servant leader, Saroyan served as grand President of the Phi Delta chi Pharmacy fraternity for 8 years and was the inaugural chair of the Board for its foundation. His service has been recognized with his receiving the linwood f. tice friend of APhA–ASP Award and the california Pharmacist-of-the-Year Award and through his induction into the california Pharmacists Association Hall of fame. He received his Pharm BS

degree from University of the Pacific.

DIStIngUISHeD feDerAl PHArMAcISt AWArDSupported by the Roche Foundation

established in 2002, the Distinguished federal Pharmacist Award is the Association’s premier award to recognize pharma-cists who have distinguished themselves and the profession by outstanding contributions in federal pharmacy practice that have resulted in a significant improvement in the health of the nation and/or the population they serve.

CAPt Pamela M. Schweitzer, PharmD, BCACP, was selected in recognition of her dedicated service to federal pharmacy, including 18 years with the Indian Health Service (IHS) and more than 4 years with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Along with many other contributions, Schweitzer led the design, development, and imple-mentation of the pharmacy point-of-sale billing software for IHS, was instrumental in developing and coordinating the IHS national residency Program, and volunteered to lead the national implementation of the IHS electronic health record. recognized as a change agent and servant leader, Schweitzer has fostered interagency and inter-

departmental collaboration that has had an immense impact on federal pharmacy and the patients served by IHS. She received her PharmD from UcSf and completed an ambulatory care/administrative residency at the University of california, Irvine Medical center.

coMMUnItY PHArMAcY reSIDencY excellence In PrecePtIng AWArDthe APhA community Pharmacy residency excellence in Precepting Award was established to recognize a community phar-macy residency director or preceptor who has demonstrated excellence in precepting, mentoring, leadership, and community pharmacy residency program administration.

Cherokee Layson-Wolf, PharmD, CGP, BCACP, FAPhA, was selected in recognition of her work to identify and expand innovative patient care sites and increase the number of community residents in Maryland. As a tribute to layson-Wolf’s strong mentorship, her residents took advantage of the expanding scope of practice in the state including immunizations, point of care testing, and collaborative practice. layson-Wolf is Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science and Associate Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. She graduated from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and completed a com-

munity pharmacy residency at Virginia commonwealth University and Ukrop’s Pharmacy.

H.A.B. DUnnIng AWArDestablished in 1982, the H.A.B. Dunning Award recognizes an exemplary contribution to APhA and the practice of phar-macy by a pharmaceutical manufacturer, provider of support products or services, or other entity such as wholesaler or chain corporation. the award is named for Henry Armitt Brown Dunning (1877–1962), former chair of the Board of Hynson, Westcott, and Dunning, who as a longstanding APhA leader was instrumental in the funding and building of the APhA Headquarters building in Washington, Dc.

Cardinal Health and the Cardinal Health Foundation were selected in recognition of their sup-port of the initiatives of APhA and their dedication to advancing the profession of pharmacy. In addition to their expansive distribution network of pharmaceuticals and supplies, these organiza-tions provide professional support services to a variety of practice settings, including independent

community pharmacy, health-system practice, nuclear pharmacy, and specialty practice settings. While many of their professional initiatives are noteworthy, cardinal Health and cardinal Health foundation’s generation rx: Preventing the Misuse and Abuse of Prescription Medications program has empowered pharmacists, student pharmacists, and patients nationwide with resources to combat the prescription drug abuse epidemic.

DIStIngUISHeD neW PrActItIoner AWArDthe Distinguished new Practitioner Award was established in 2010 to recognize an individual new practitioner who has demonstrated distinctive achievements in mentorship, service, and commitment to the profession of pharmacy.

Brent N. Reed, PharmD, BCPS, was selected in recognition of his work transforming the role of pharmacists within cardiology, as well as his mentorship of student pharmacists and new practitioners. He has been an integral member of a multidisciplinary care team, leading several initiatives to improve patient care and advance clinical pharmacy services while conducting collaborative practice-based research. As a mentor and preceptor to student pharmacists and residents, he focuses on learner autonomy and the integration of learners into care delivery sys-tems. reed is Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, where he practices in the area

of heart failure and advanced cardiovascular therapies. He received his BS in biology from the University of tennessee in 2005 and his PharmD from the University of tennessee Health Science center in 2009.

generAtIon rx AWArD of excellenceEndowed by the Cardinal Health Foundation

the generation rx Award of excellence was established in 2011 to recognize a pharmacist who has demonstrated a com-mitment to the mission of substance abuse education.

Leslie Shepard, PharmD, was selected in recognition of her commitment to her community and to the mission of substance abuse education. through her involvement with the Dickson county (tn) Drug free coalition and other initiatives, Shepard has worked to raise awareness of the dangers of prescription drug abuse among the general public and provide education to patients, youth, and other members of her community. Shepard received her PharmD from the University of tennessee Health Science center college of Pharmacy.

Amber L Briggs, PharmD, BC–ADM, CGP, BCPS, FASCP, received her BS and PharmD from Midwestern University chicago college of Pharmacy and completed a pharmacy practice residency with an emphasis in com-munity care at University of Illinois chicago

and Dominick’s Pharmacy. Briggs is currently a pharmacist at central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna, AK, and a long-term care consultant. She has served as President of Alaska Pharmacists Association and in various leadership roles in Alaska pharmacy, including Alaska Medicaid and Alaska diabetes workgroups. Briggs is actively involved with APhA, serving in numerous capacities such as past Member-at-large for the APhA–APPM executive committee, APhA–APPM Policy review committee, Key Advocacy contact, delegate to the APhA House, and member of the new Practitioner, Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA), and APhA DrugInfoLine editorial advisory boards.

Daniel E. Buffington, PharmD, MBA, is President and Practice Director at clinical Pharmacology Services in tampa, fl. He is also on faculty at the University of South florida college of Medicine and Pharmacy and serves as an experiential preceptor for numer-

ous colleges across the country. Buffington studied biology/biochemistry at the University of South florida and received his PharmD and MBA from Mercer University. His postgraduate training included a pharmacy practice residency and clinical pharmacology fellowship from emory University. Buffington is a clinical pharmacology specialist, provides MtM consulting, serves as a principal investigator for Phase II and III clinical trials, and manages a national drug information service that provides clinical support for medical practices, health sys-tems, and health plans. He is currently on the APhA Board of trustees and represents pharmacists on the American Medical Association’s current Procedural terminology editorial panel. His interests include developing practice model resources for improving medication use and patient safety, health care ser-vice reimbursement, and development of health informatics and specialty analytic tools for emerging electronic medical record systems and direct patient care.

Lou Diorio, RPh, is Principal of lDt Health Solutions, Inc., a medication safety and qual-ity management consulting company with more than 40 years of pharmacy expertise serving clients nationwide. He is a graduate of long Island University’s Schwartz college

of Pharmacy, Adjunct Professor of Pharmacy Practice for the college, a preceptor of pharmacy students, and a member of the college’s Alumni executive Board. Diorio has extensive experience in I.V. and extemporaneous compounding, and he lectures, writes, and consults on these topics; he lends his expertise to many state boards of pharmacy and is a nation-ally recognized subject matter expert. An active APhA member since 1985, Diorio is a past chair of APhA–APPM. He is also an active member of the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical fraternity foundation Board of Directors. Since 1985, Diorio has prac-ticed in many diverse clinical settings, including operations chief of an fDA registered compounding center and chief operating officer of a multicentered sub-acute and long-term care hospital system. He has managed and practiced in home-care, hospi-tal, and retail settings.

Jeff Goad, PharmD, MPH, is Associate Professor and Vice chair for continuing Professional Development, credentialing, and Distance education at the University of Southern california School of Pharmacy. He received his PharmD from the USc School of Pharmacy

in 1994 and his MPH from the Keck School of Medicine of USc in 2003; he completed a pediatric pharmacy residency at children’s Hospital los Angeles. goad directs the USc International travel clinics and the postgraduate year 1 com-munity pharmacy residency program. He is a member of the national faculty and the advisory board for the APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunization training Program. He has presented at more than 150 pharmacy and medical conferences and published more than 40 articles and book chapters. goad is currently the president of the california Immunization coalition and immediate past chair of the Pharmacist Professional group of the International Society of travel Medicine.

Melissa Somma McGivney, PharmD, FCCP, is Assistant Dean of community Partnerships and Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. Mcgivney has focused her professional career on developing best practices for pharmacists to provide care

to patients in their own communities and as a part of interpro-

fessional teams. She has worked as a clinical pharmacist, educator, and research collaborator, all focused on the devel-opment of a standardized pharmacist practice model allowing pharmacists to provide needed care to patients in their com-munities. She has collaborated in designing and conducting state and national training programs for pharmacists providing medication therapy management (MtM) and served as the community pharmacy residency director for 15 community pharmacy residents. In the classroom, she introduces students to pharmacist-provided patient care, community pharmacy innova-tion, and coordinates the community leadership Innovation & Practice Workshop Series for students, preceptors, and alumni. She coordinates the national Association of chain Drug Stores faculty Scholars Program for community pharmacy faculty and has been an invited speaker at state and national meetings. Mcgivney is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and completed a residency in ambulatory care. She has served on the faculty of Wilkes University and UPMc St. Margaret family Medicine residency Program.

Michael Pavlovich, PharmD, is the owner of Westcliff compounding Pharmacy in newport Beach, cA. He has been an APhA trustee since 2008 and has served APhA’s executive, finance, government Affairs, and Performance Improvement committees. He graduated, cum laude, in 1989 from the University of the

Pacific. He is Associate clinical Professor for Western University of Health Sciences and adjunct faculty for several universi-ties. Pavlovich served as the U.S. olympic committee’s team pharmacist for the xxIx olympiad in 2008. He has addressed professional health care organizations nationwide on a variety of pharmacy-related topics and advised clients from all major sports leagues and the ncAA for more than 12 years. He rep-resented APhA on a joint task force with the national Athletic trainers’ Association (nAtA) charged with creating guidelines for managing medication use in the athletic training facility and was a contributing author for the nAtA Position Statement: Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids. Pavlovich was appointed to the california Department of Justice’s working group charged with reforming the state’s prescription drug monitoring system. Jennifer L. Rodis, PharmD, BCPS, is Associate Professor of Pharmacy at the ohio State University college of Pharmacy. She received her doctor of pharmacy degree from ohio northern University and completed her residen-cy training at the ohio State University college

of Pharmacy. She is the creator and director of the Partner for Promotion program, which joins students and community pharmacists to develop and implement advanced patient care services in community-based pharmacy practices. She also pro-vides MtM and disease management in the therapeutic areas of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and anticoagulation to patients with the clinical Partners Program—an award-winning ambulatory/community care clinic. rodis’s passion and focus involve empowering current and future pharmacists to advance the role of the pharmacist as an indispensable care provider in the community. She is a member of APhA, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), American college of clinical Pharmacy (AccP), AAcP, and ohio Pharmacists Association (oPA). She has been recognized with the oPA Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award, an APhA-APPM Merit Award, and the AAcP Innovations in teaching Award for her work with the Partner for Promotion program.

Norman P. tomaka, BSPharm, MS, is a grad-uate of Duquesne University and the University of florida college of Pharmacy. for more than 30 years, he has practiced as a community, institutional, clinical, and consultant pharmacist. Active in pharmacy education, tomaka serves

as a clinical-affiliate professor for several schools of phar-macy. He sits on the Advisory Board for Pharmacy technician Development at everest University. currently, he is practicing as a clinical consultant pharmacist in rockledge, fl. tomaka has long been involved with pharmacy advocacy and has a history of leadership in state and national pharmacy organizations. Adam C. Welch, PharmD, MBA, BCACP, is Associate Professor and Acting Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs and Assessment at Wilkes University School of Pharmacy. He has given more than 50 presentations in the area of immunizations on a local, state, or national

level. Welch has also trained faculty at five different schools of pharmacy to teach the immunization training program in their curricula. He is on the advisory board for APhA’s Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery and sits as pharmacy’s liaison to the Zoster Working group for the Advisory committee on Immunization Practices. Welch has served as President of the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association and new Practitioner officer in APhA–APPM; he is the Immunizing Pharmacist Special Interest group coordinator for APhA.

Pamela A. Whitmire, PharmD, MHSA, is Pharmacy and risk Manager for the opioid treatment program at Southwest carolina treatment center. Previously, she was the phar-macy manager for fred’s Pharmacy and before that she owned and operated an indepen-

dent community pharmacy. Whitmire’s pharmacy career has spanned several practice settings: home health care, home infu-sion, academia, hospital, and hospice pharmacy. Because of the diversity of her practice experience, she is able to provide students with realistic guidance in her current role as regional experiential education coordinator for the South University School of Pharmacy. Whitmire has held many positions of leadership; at the state level, she has served as President of the South carolina Pharmacy Association, Speaker of the House of Delegates, and At-large Director, and she continues to serve as treasurer. She served as APhA Speaker of the House of Delegates and was a member of several APhA committees including Policy, Strategic Planning, nominations; and StAt on empowerment of Pharmacists. tina Penick Brock, BSPharm, MS, EdD, is Associate Dean for global Health and educational Innovations and Professor of clinical Pharmacy at UcSf. In this capacity, she collaborates with educators in the schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy

and the department of physical therapy, exploring ways to improve health outcomes through interprofessional care. Brock completed a BA in german, BS in pharmacy, and MS in pharmacy administration at the University of Mississippi and a doctorate in education at the University of north carolina at chapel Hill. She feels fortunate to have experience in a variety of pharmacy fields—community, hospital, industry, professional association, nongovernmental organization, and academia. Brock’s passions are global health workforce capacity building, systems strengthening, curriculum development, technology-enhanced learning, and leadership development. In 2005, she was recognized as the APhA–ASP outstanding Advisor Award and, in 2012, she served as the elected national President of the Phi lambda Sigma leadership Society. She is originally from Mccomb, MS, and enjoys good tomatoes, Southern fic-tion, and British newspapers.

Carolyn M. Brown, PhD, earned her bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from xavier University of louisiana and her doctor of phi-losophy degree from the University of florida. Brown is a professor in the Health outcomes and Pharmacy Practice Division, college of

Pharmacy, University of texas at Austin (Ut-Austin). Her research has focused on cultural and social elements that affect quality of care and outcomes of patients with chronic illnesses, particular-ly ethnic minorities who experience a disproportionate burden of poor health. She has more than 60 publications and nearly 110 national and international presentations. Her studies have been funded by such entities as the national Institutes of Health (nIH), the Bureau of Primary Health care, and AAcP. Brown has been an active member of the APhA economic, Social and Administrative Sciences Section for more than 20 years and has served the Section in various capacities. She has also held leadership positions in the American Public Health Association, including as governing councilor of the Medical care Section and Action Board member, governmental Affairs. She is a co-advisor to the Student national Pharmaceutical Association at Ut-Austin.

CDR Joshua W. Devine, PharmD, PhD, serves in the commissioned corps of the U.S. Public Health Service as Principal Pharmacoeconomist for the Defense Health Agency, Pharmacy operations Division, with oversight of eco-nomic evaluations that support the Department

of Defense formulary decision making for 9.6 million beneficia-ries in the military health system. Devine received his PharmD from Drake University and a PhD in social, administrative, and clinical pharmacy from the University of Minnesota. He has contributed to the Association through numerous presentations and publications, served as a delegate in the APhA House, and on multiple APhA committees. He is also an active member of International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research and holds numerous awards and accolades from the U.S. Air force and U.S. Public Health Service. His pri-mary research interests are the evaluation of health outcomes associated with formulary decision making and measuring medication adherence in the military health system.

Joel F. Farley, RPh, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Division of Pharmaceutical outcomes and Policy at the Unc eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of north carolina at chapel Hill. He holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin

and a PhD in social, administrative, and clinical pharmacy from the University of Minnesota. Before receiving his PhD, farley worked as a pharmacist in the community setting for 10 years. He has a long history of service to APhA, having been previously elected as the Postgraduate officer of APhA–APrS, serving on the policy committee in the House of Delegates, and chairing a number of educational planning committees for the annual meeting. farley’s research focuses on improving medi-cation use in patients with chronic medical conditions through the adoption, evaluation, and dissemination of evidence-based policies and health care practices. He has more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and has received funding for his research from a number of organizations, including nIH, the Agency for Healthcare research and Quality, and the robert Wood Johnson foundation.

Kevin C. Farmer, RPh, PhD, is Professor and Vice-chair of Department of Pharmacy: clinical & Administrative Sciences at the University of oklahoma college of Pharmacy. He received his bachelor’s in pharmacy from the University of Missouri–Kansas city (UMKc) in 1980

and his PhD in pharmacy administration from UMKc in 1990. After graduating from pharmacy school, farmer practiced as a hospital pharmacist, a retail pharmacist, and a market research analyst for a startup pharmaceutical company in Missouri prior to his academic career. farmer has been a faculty member at the University of oklahoma college of Pharmacy since 1991. He teaches courses in the professional PharmD program and graduate program in health policy, pharmaceutical market-ing, outcomes research, and financial management. He has served on the editorial advisory board and as a peer reviewer for JAPhA. He was a co-author on the APhA clinical research paper award in 2010, and Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice best research paper of 2008–09. His primary research interests include the study of patient adherence with medications, methods to evaluate medication adherence and persistence, and evaluation of interventions to improve adher-ence behavior.

Suzan N. Kucukarslan, PhD, is a graduate of Drake University (BS/MBA) and UMKc (PhD, pharmacy administration). She practiced pharmacy in community and institutional phar-macies and served as faculty member at ohio State University and the University of Michigan.

Kucukarslan’s academic expertise includes pharmaceutical mar-keting, finance, public policy, communications, and research methods. Her research explores new pharmacy-driven strate-gies to improve patient care. She is the recipient of the 2003 Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists Professional Practice Award for excellence in Innovative Pharmacy Practice, 2004 ASHP research & education foundation’s Pharmacy Practice research Award, and the 2012 research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy Best Paper Award. Kucukarslan has worked alongside many pharmacists who make thera-peutic recommendations, help patients select appropriate nonprescription medications, counsel patients, and troubleshoot many problems to ensure that their patients receive the best

She is currently Patient Safety officer at Mclaren regional Medical center at flint, MI, and completerx, Inc. She has started the center for Safe Medication Use Studies and is working with pharmacists and other innovators who share the same visionfor pharmacy.

Sidney J. Stohs, PhD, is Dean emeritus, School of Pharmacy and Health Professions at creighton University, omaha, ne, where he led the development of the nation’s first Web-based entry-level PharmD program, the PharmD as the sole professional degree, a distance

learning PharmD pathway for practitioners holding a BS, an MS in pharmaceutical sciences, a PharmD/MBA pathway, and a BS in health sciences for PharmD students. He previously was a faculty member in pharmacy and the cancer center at the University of nebraska Medical center. Stohs subsequently served as Senior Vice President of research and Development for Advocare International, Plano, tx, a nutrition and wellness company, where he was responsible for product research, development, and formulation. He has more than 400 publica-tions in toxicology, pharmacology, natural products, nutrition, and pharmacy education. Stohs received his BS in pharmacy and MS in pharmacognosy from the University of nebraska, and his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin. He conducted postdoctoral studies and research at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, and the national Institute of environmental Health, research triangle Park, nc, in pharma-cology, toxicology, and nutrition.

CoraLynn trewet, MS, PharmD, BCPS, CDE, is a medical science liaison with Sanofi specializing in diabetes. Prior to this position, trewet was Associate clinical Professor of family Medicine at the University of Iowa. She is a Board certified Pharmacotherapy

Specialist and a certified Diabetes educator and is certified as a Wellcoach® Health coach. trewet was named Iowa’s Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year in 2011 and was named a fellow of the national lipid Association in 2009. She has been an active volunteer with state and national asso-ciations working to advance the profession of pharmacy. Most recently, she represented APhA with the approval and dissemi-nation of cardiovascular guidelines. trewet has been a speaker at various regional and national meetings in clinical and adult learning topics. She graduated from Drake University with her doctor of pharmacy degree; she then completed a practice management residency and obtained her master’s in pharmacy administration from the University of Kansas.

Donna S. West-Strum, RPh, PhD, graduated from the University of Mississippi with her BS in pharmacy in 1995 and her PhD in pharmacy administration in 1999. After spending 9 years in the Division of Pharmaceutical evaluation and Policy at the University of Arkansas

college of Pharmacy, West-Strum returned to the University of Mississippi in 2008 to serve as chair and Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Administration. She has taught pharmacy management, research methods, pharmaceuti-cal Marketing, and social behavioral theory in pharmacy. West-Strum’s research interests lie in the practice of community pharmacy and improving the quality of medication use. She has published more than 50 peer-reviewed research articles and presented more than 90 national presentations. She has written several book chapters and edits the NCPA Digest. Her current research interests include primary medication non-adher-ence, measuring pharmacy quality, and marketing pharmacy services. West-Strum has received funding from federal and state agencies, professional associations, and private founda-tions. Allen Nichol, PharmD, is being recognized for his innovative and influential leadership in the advancement of pharmacist professional practice. nichol developed clinical treatment algorithms for several diseases, including his most recent pain management algorithm. He has also been involved in extensive efforts that demonstrate the value of pharmacist clinical services and to seek reimbursement through third party and government programs. nichol is chief operating officer and Vice President of clinical operations at ceuticare, a health information technol-ogy company that he cofounded. He also practices as a clinical pharmacist with the American Health network

(physician network) in columbus, oH. nichol earned a BSPharm from ohio northern University and a PharmD from Southeastern University of the Health Sciences (now nova Southeastern University).

Beatty has built a sustainable pharmacy practice model by incorporating pharmacist-provided services in several interdisciplinary areas includ-ing chronic pain management, diabetes, geriatrics, and transitions of care. He is Assistant Professor of clinical Pharmacy at the ohio State University (oSU) college of Pharmacy. Additionally, he practices at the oSU general internal medicine clinics, combining patient care services with experiential teaching and clinical research at the

national committee for Quality Assurance tier 3 patient-centered medical home. Beatty received a PharmD from ohio northern University and then completed a pharmacy practice residency with emphasis in community care at oSU.

Sandeep Kumar, PhD, was selected in recognition of his paper titled “relationship between potential aggre-gation-prone regions and HlA-Dr-binding t-cell immune epitopes: implications for rational design of novel and follow-on therapeutic antibodies,” published in the August 2012 issue of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. coauthors of the paper were Mark A. Mitchell, Bonita rup, and Satish K. Singh. Kumar is Senior Principal Scientist in Biotherapeutics Pharmaceutical research & Development at Pfizer, Inc. He earned a BS in physics from Delhi University, an MS in biotechnology and molecular biology from g.B. Pant University of Agriculture and

technology, and a PhD in computational molecular biophysics from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His academic work was followed by postdoctoral research under Dr. ruth nussinov’s guidance at the national cancer Institute on protein folding, function, and thermodynamic stability.

WIeDerHolt PrIZethis award was established in 1996 as the APhA Best Published Paper Award for economic, Social, and Administrative Sciences. In 2002, it was renamed the Wiederholt Prize in honor of Joseph B. Wiederholt, PhD (1949–2001). Dr. Wiederholt was the first recipient of the award and a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. the purpose of the award is to recognize the best paper published in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association within the past 2 calendar years, describing original investigation in the areas of economic, social, or administrative sciences.

Bonnie L. Svarstad, PhD, was selected in recognition of her paper titled “Improving refill adherence and hyper-tension control in black patients: Wisconsin teAM trial,” which was published in the September/october 2013 issue of JAPhA. Her coauthors were Jane Morley Kotchen, theresa I. Shireman, roger l. Brown, Stephanie Y. crawford, Jeanine K. Mount, Pamela A. Palmer, eva M. Vivian, and Dale A. Wilson. Svarstad is Professor emerita at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Pharmacy. She received her PhD in sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Daniel R. touchette, PharmD, MA, FCCP, was selected in recognition of his paper titled “Safety-focused medica-tion therapy management: a randomized controlled trial,” which was published in the September/october 2012 issue of JAPhA. touchette’s coauthors were Andrew l. Masica, rowena J. Dolor, glen t. Schumock, Young Ku choi, Yoonsang Kim, and Scott r. Smith. touchette is Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Systems, outcomes and Policy at the University of Illinois at chicago. He is also network Director for the AccP Practice-Based research network. touchette received his BSPharm from the University of Manitoba and his PharmD and a

master’s in economics from Wayne State University. He completed a fellowship in pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research at Wayne State.

Student Awards, administered by the APhA Academy of Student PharmacistslInWooD f. tIce frIenD of tHe APhA AcADeMY of StUDent PHArMAcIStS AWArDestablished in 1988, this award recognizes an individual whose long-term services and contributions have supported the APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA–ASP) and its members. formerly known as the APhA friend of ASP Award, the award was renamed in 1994 to honor University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Dean emeritus and APhA Past-President Dr. linwood f. tice who, in his capacity as chair of the APhA committee on Student Branches from 1952 to 1955, was instru-mental in the formation of the APhA organizational unit that evolved into APhA–ASP.

Marialice S. Bennett, BSPharm, RPh, FAPhA, was selected in recognition of her outstanding work as a teacher, mentor, leader, and practitioner. She has provided significant service to the profession through many years of stu-dent-related activities at the ohio State University and also at the national level. During her 5 years on the APhA Board of trustees—as APhA–APPM President and then APhA President—Bennett worked tirelessly to ensure that student voices were considered in all APhA activities. She received her BSPharm from the ohio State University and currently serves the university as Professor emeritus and Director of the community and Ambulatory care

residency Program.

AcADeMY of StUDent PHArMAcIStS oUtStAnDIng cHAPter ADVISor AWArDthe APhA–ASP outstanding chapter Advisor Award was established in 1988 to recognize advisors of APhA–ASP chapters who have promoted with distinction the welfare of student pharmacists through various professional activities.

Carol A. Bugdalski-Stutrud, RPh, FAPhA, was selected in recognition of nearly a decade of guidance to the Wayne State University chapter of APhA. Bugdalski-Stutrud has been referred to as a “Wonder Woman,” a pharmacy superhero whose passion, gumption, and morals have inspired and cultivated leaders time and time again. through her energy and enthusiasm, she has promoted professional growth and development in students and faculty alike, helping them reach their full leadership potential. Her dedication to her chapter and the profes-sion is evident in her substantive role in advancing health and wellness throughout the campus, guiding her students

to organize health screenings, biometric screenings, MtM services, and more than 10,000 vaccinations for university employees. She received her BSPharm from Wayne State University.

AcADeMY of StUDent PHArMAcIStS oUtStAnDIng DeAn AWArDthe APhA–ASP outstanding Dean Award was established in 2005 to recognize the deans of the schools and colleges of pharmacy nationwide who have promoted with distinction the welfare of student pharmacists through various professional activities.

Phillip R. Oppenheimer, PharmD, was selected in recognition of his contributions to the profession and to University of the Pacific thomas J. long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. His outstanding leadership, professionalism, patient-focused caring, and innovations in curricular and education opportunities have positively impacted the faculty, students, and alumni for more than 15 years. His overwhelming support to student activities has led the Pacific’s APhA–ASP chapter to become one of the most active chapters regionally and nationally. oppenheimer earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of california, Berkeley, and a PharmD from the

University of california, San francisco, where he also completed a postdoctoral residency in hospital and clinical pharmacy.
