SAFETY RULES

WARNING: Always disconnectspark plug wire and place wire where it can-not contact spark plug to prevent accidentalstarting when setting up, transporting, ad-justing or making repairs except carburetoradjustments.Because a chain saw is a high-speed wood-cutting tool, special safety precautions mustbe observed to reduce the risk of accidents.Careless or improper use of this tool cancause serious injury.PLAN AHEADS Read this manual carefully until you com-

pletely understand and can follow all safetyrules, precautions, and operating instruc-tions before attempting to use the unit.

S Restrict the use of your saw to adult userswho understand and can follow safetyrules, precautions, and operating instruc-tions found in this manual.

S Wear protective gear. Always use steel-toedsafety footwear with non-slip soles; snug-fit-ting clothing; heavy-duty, non-slip gloves;eye protection such as non-fogging, ventedgoggles or face screen; an approved safetyhard hat; and sound barriers (ear plugs ormufflers) to protect your hearing. Regularusers should have hearing checked regular-ly as chain saw noise can damage hearing.Secure hair above shoulder length.

S Keep all parts of your body away from thechain when the engine is running.

S Keep children, bystanders, and animals aminimum of 30 feet (10 meters) away fromthe work area. Do not allow other peopleor animals to be near the chain saw whenstarting or operating the chain saw.

S Do not handle or operate a chain sawwhen you are fatigued, ill, or upset, or if youhave taken alcohol, drugs, or medication. You must be in good physical conditionand mentally alert. Chain saw work isstrenuous. If you have any condition thatmight be aggravated by strenuous work, check with your doctor before operating achain saw.

S Carefully plan your sawing operation in ad-vance. Do not start cutting until you have aclear work area, secure footing, and, if youare felling trees, a planned retreat path.

OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELYS Do not operate a chain saw with one hand.

Serious injury to the operator, helpers, by-standers or any combination of these per-sons may result from one-handed opera-tion. A chain saw is intended fortwo-handed use.

S Operate the chain saw only in a well-venti-lated outdoor area.

S Do not operate saw from a ladder or in atree.

S Make sure the chain will not make contactwith any object while starting the engine.Never try to start the saw when the guidebar is in a cut.

S Do not put pressure on the saw at the endof the cut. Applying pressure can causeyou to lose control when the cut is com-pleted.

S Stop the engine before setting the sawdown.

S Do not operate a chain saw that is dam-aged, improperly adjusted, or not com-pletely and securely assembled. Alwaysreplace bar, chain, hand guard, or chainbrake immediately if it becomes damaged, broken or is otherwise removed.

S With the engine stopped, hand carry thechain saw with the muffler away from yourbody, and the guide bar and chain to therear, preferably covered with a scabbard.

MAINTAIN YOUR SAW IN GOODWORKING ORDERS Have all chain saw service performed by a

qualified service dealer with the exceptionof the items listed in the maintenance sec-tion of this manual. For example, if improp-er tools are used to remove or hold the fly-wheel when servicing the clutch, structuraldamage to the flywheel can occur andcause the flywheel to burst.

S Make certain the saw chain stops movingwhen the throttle trigger is released. Forcorrection, refer to CARBURETOR AD-JUSTMENTS.

S Never modify your saw in any way.S Keep the handles dry, clean, and free of oil

or fuel mixture.S Keep fuel and oil caps, screws, and fas-

teners securely tightened.S Use only HusqvarnaR accessories and

replacement parts as recommended.HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTIONS Do not smoke while handling fuel or while

operating the saw.S Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame in

the areas where fuel is mixed or poured. There should be no smoking, open flames,or work that could cause sparks. Allow en-gine to cool before refueling.

S Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area onbare ground; store fuel in a cool, dry, wellventilated place; and use an approved, marked container for all fuel purposes.Wipe up all fuel spills before starting saw.

S Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) from fuel-ing site before starting engine.

S Turn the engine off and let saw cool in anon-combustible area, not on dry leaves, straw, paper, etc. Slowly remove fuel capand refuel unit.

S Store the unit and fuel in an area where fuelvapors cannot reach sparks or openflames from water heaters, electric motorsor switches, furnaces, etc.

KICKBACK

WARNING: Avoid kickback whichcan result in serious injury. Kickback is thebackward, upward or sudden forward motionof the guide bar occurring when the sawchain near the upper tip of the guide bar con-tacts any object such as a log or branch, orwhen the wood closes in and pinches thesaw chain in the cut. Contacting a foreign ob-ject in the wood can also result in loss ofchain saw control.S Rotational Kickback can occur when the

moving chain contacts an object at the up-per tip of the guide bar. This contact cancause the chain to dig into the object, which stops the chain for an instant. Theresult is a lightning fast, reverse reactionwhich kicks the guide bar up and back to-ward the operator.

S Pinch-Kickback can occur when the thewood closes in and pinches the movingsaw chain in the cut along the top of theguide bar and the saw chain is suddenlystopped. This sudden stopping of thechain results in a reversal of the chainforce used to cut wood and causes thesaw to move in the opposite direction of thechain rotation. The saw is driven straightback toward the operator.

S Pull-In can occur when the moving chaincontacts a foreign object in the wood in thecut along the bottom of the guide bar and thesaw chain is suddenly stopped. This suddenstopping pulls the saw forward and awayfrom the operator and could easily cause theoperator to lose control of the saw.

Avoid Pinch--Kickback:S Be extremely aware of situations or ob-

structions that can cause material to pinchthe top of or otherwise stop the chain.

S Do not cut more than one log at a time.S Do not twist the saw as the bar is with-

drawn from an undercut when bucking.Avoid Pull--In:S Always begin cutting with the engine at full

speed and the saw housing against wood.S Use wedges made of plastic or wood.

Never use metal to hold the cut open.

Kickback PathAvoid Obstructions

Clear The Working Area

REDUCE THE CHANCE OFKICKBACKS Recognize that kickback can happen.

With a basic understanding of kickback, you can reduce the element of surprisewhich contributes to accidents.

S Never let the moving chain contact any ob-ject at the tip of the guide bar.

S Keep the working area free from obstruc-tions such as other trees, branches, rocks, fences, stumps, etc. Eliminate or avoidany obstruction that your saw chain couldhit while you are cutting. When cutting abranch, do not let the guide bar contactbranch or other objects around it.

S Keep your saw chain sharp and properlytensioned. A loose or dull chain can in-crease the chance of kickback occurring.Follow manufacturer ’s chain sharpeningand maintenance instructions. Check ten-sion at regular intervals with the enginestopped, never with the engine running.Make sure the chain brake nuts are se-curely tightened after tensioning the chain.

S Begin and continue cutting at full speed. Ifthe chain is moving at a slower speed, there is greater chance of kickback occur-ring.

S Cut one log at a time.S Use extreme caution when re-entering a

previous cut.S Do not attempt cuts starting with the tip of

the bar (plunge cuts).S Watch for shifting logs or other forces that

could close a cut and pinch or fall intochain.

S Use the Reduced--Kickback Guide Barand Low--Kickback Chain specified foryour saw.

S Keep a good, firm grip on the saw with bothhands when the engine is running anddon’t let go. A firm grip will help you reducekickback and maintain control of the saw.Keep the fingers of your left hand encir-cling and your left thumb under the fronthandlebar. Keep your right hand com-pletely around the rear handle whetheryour are right handed or left handed. Keepyour left arm straight with the elbowlocked.

S Position your left hand on the front handle-bar so it is in a straight line with your righthand on the rear handle when makingbucking cuts. Never reverse right and lefthand positions for any type of cutting.

S Stand with your weight evenly balanced onboth feet.

S Stand slightly to the left side of the saw tokeep your body from being in a direct linewith the cutting chain.

S Do not overreach. You could be drawn orthrown off balance and lose control of thesaw.

S Do not cut above shoulder height. It is diffi-cult to maintain control of saw aboveshoulder height.

KICKBACK SAFETY FEATURES

WARNING: The following featuresare included on your saw to help reduce thehazard of kickback; however, such featureswill not totally eliminate this danger. As achain saw user, do not rely only on safety de-vices. You must follow all safety precau-tions, instructions, and maintenance in thismanual to help avoid kickback and otherforces which can result in serious injury.S Reduced--Kickback Guide Bar, designed

with a small radius tip which reduces thesize of the kickback danger zone on thebar tip. A Reduced--Kickback Guide Barhas been demonstrated to significantly re-duce the number and seriousness of kick-backs.

S Front Hand Guard, designed to reduce thechance of your left hand contacting the chainif your hand slips off the front handlebar.

S Position of front and rear handlebars, de-signed with distance between handles and“in-line” with each other. The spread and“in-line” position of the hands provided bythis design work together to give balanceand resistance in controlling the pivot ofthe saw back toward the operator if kick-back occurs.

WARNING: DO NOT RELY UPONANY OF THE DEVICES BUILT INTO YOURSAW. YOU SHOULD USE THE SAW PROP-ERLY AND CAREFULLY TO AVOID KICK-BACK. Reduced--kickback guide bars andlow--kickback saw chains reduce the chanceand magnitude of kickback and are recom-mended. Your saw has a low kickback chainand bar as original equipment. Repairs on achain brake should be made by an authorizedservicing dealer. Take your unit to the place ofpurchase if purchased from a servicing dealer,or to the nearest authorized master servicedealer.S Tip contact in some cases may cause a light-

ning fast reverse REACTION, kicking theguide bar up and back toward the operator.

S Pinching the saw chain along the top of theguide bar may push the guide bar rapidlyback toward the operator.

S Either of these reactions may cause you tolose control of the saw which could resultin serious injury.Do not rely exclusivelyupon the safety devices built into your saw.CHAIN BRAKES Chain Brake, designed to stop the chain in

the event of kickback.

WARNING: Your chain saw isequipped with a chain brake that is designedto stop the chain immediately if you get akickback. The chain brake reduces the riskof accidents, but only you can prevent them.DO NOT ASSUME THAT THE CHAINBRAKE WILL PROTECT YOU IN THEEVENT OF A KICKBACK.

WARNING: If the saw is operatedwith a loose chain, the chain could jump offthe guide bar and result in serious injury.

WARNING: Muffler is very hot dur-ing and after use. Do not touch the muffler orallow combustible material such as drygrass or fuel to do so.

FUELING & LUBRICATION

WARNING: Remove fuel cap slow-ly when refueling.FUELING ENGINEThis engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline. Before operation, gasoline must be mixed with a good quality2-cycle air-cooled engine oil. Werecommend HusqvarnaR brand oil. If you donot use this oil, use a good quality 2-cycleair-cooled oil designed to be mixed at a ratioof 40:1. A 40:1 ratio is obtained by mixing0,125 liter of oil with 5 liters of unleadedgasoline. DO NOT USE automotive or boatoil. These oils will cause engine damage. When mixing fuel follow the instructionsprinted on the container. Always read andfollow the safety rules listed under HANDLEFUEL WITH CAUTION.BAR AND CHAIN LUBRICATIONThe bar and chain require continuous lubri-cation. Lubrication is provided by the auto-matic oiler system when the oil tank is keptfilled. Lack of oil will quickly ruin the bar andchain. Too little oil will cause overheatingshown by smoke coming from the chain and/or discoloration of the bar.Only use Bar and Chain Oil for bar and chainlubrication.Oil cap Fuel mix cap

STARTING

WARNING: The chain must notmove when the engine runs at idle speed. Ifthe chain moves at idle speed refer to CAR-BURETOR ADJUSTMENT within thismanual. Avoid contact with the muffler. A hotmuffler can cause serious burns.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBERWhen pulling the starter rope, do not use thefull extent of the rope as this can cause therope to break. Do not let starter rope snapback. Hold the handle and let the rope rewindslowly. For cold weather starting, start the unit atFULL CHOKE; allow the engine to warm upbefore squeezing the throttle trigger.

NOTE: Do not cut material with the choke/fast idle lever at the FULL CHOKE position.

STARTING A COLD ENGINE (orwarm engine after running out offuel):NOTE: In the following steps, when thechoke/fast idle lever is pulled out to the fullextent, the correct throttle setting for startingis set automatically.S Move ON/STOP switch to the ON position.S Pull the choke/fast idle lever out to the full

extent.S Pull starter rope quickly with your right

hand a maximum of 10 times.NOTE: If the engine sounds as if it is tryingto start before the 10th pull, stop pulling andimmediately proceed to the next step.S Push the choke/fast idle lever in complete-

ly (to the OFF CHOKE position).S Pull the starter rope quickly with your right

hand until the engine starts.S Allow the engine to run for approximately 5

seconds. Then, squeeze and releasethrottle trigger to allow engine to return toidle speed.

STARTING A WARM ENGINES Move ON/STOP switch to the ON position.S Pull the choke/fast idle lever out to the full ex-

tent; then, push the lever back in completely(to the OFF CHOKE position). This will setthe fast idle lock to the start position.

S Pull the starter rope quickly with your righthand until the engine starts.

S Squeeze and release the throttle trigger toallow engine to return to idle speed.

DIFFICULT STARTING (or starting aflooded engine)The engine may be flooded if it has not startedafter 10 pulls.Flooded engines can be cleared of excess fuelby following the warm engine starting proce-dure listed above. Ensure the ON/STOPswitch is in the ON position.Starting could require many pulls depending onhow badly unit is flooded. If engine still fails tostart, refer to the TROUBLESHOOTINGTABLE.CHAIN BRAKE

WARNING: If the brake band isworn too thin it may break when the chainbrake is triggered. With a broken brake band, the chain brake will not stop the chain. Thechain brake should be replaced by an autho-rized service dealer if any part is worn to lessthan 1/32” thick. Repairs on a chain brakeshould be made by an authorized servicedealer. Take your unit to the place of pur-chase if purchased from a servicing dealer,or to the nearest authorized master servicedealer.S This saw is equipped with a chain brake.

The brake is designed to stop the chain ifkickback occurs.

S The inertia--activated chain brake isactivated if the front hand guard is pushedforward, either manually (by hand) orautomatically (by sudden movement).

S If the brake is already activated, it isdisengaged by pulling the front hand guardback toward the front handle as far aspossible.

S When cutting with the saw, the chain brakemust be disengaged.Disengaged

This is the only instance when the sawshould be placed on the ground with the en-gine running.Place the saw on firm ground. Grip the rearhandle with your right hand and the front han-dle with your left hand. Apply full throttle byfully depressing the throttle trigger. Activatethe chain brake by turning your left wristagainst the hand guard without releasingyour grip around the front handle. The chainshould stop immediately.Inertia activating function control

WARNING: When performing thefollowing procedure, the engine must beturned off.Grip the rear handle with your right hand andthe front handle with your left hand. Hold thechain saw approximately 14” (35 cm) abovea stump or other wooden surface. Releaseyour grip on the front handle and use theweight of the saw to let the top of the guidebar fall forward and contact the stump. When the tip of the bar hits the stump, thebrake should activate.

CUTTING METHODSIMPORTANT POINTSS Check chain tension before first use and af-

ter 1 minute of operation. See CHAIN TEN-SION in the ASSEMBLY section.

S Cut wood only. Do not cut metal, plastics, masonry, non-wood building materials, etc.

S Stop the saw if the chain strikes a foreign ob-ject. Inspect the saw and repair or replaceparts as necessary.

S Keep the chain out of dirt and sand. Even asmall amount of dirt will quickly dull a chainand thus increase the possibility of kickback.

S Practice cutting a few small logs using thefollowing techniques to get the “feel” of usingyour saw before you begin a major sawingoperation.S Squeeze the throttle trigger and allow the

engine to reach full speed before cutting.S Begin cutting with the saw frame against

the log.S Keep the engine at full speed the entire

time you are cutting.S Allow the chain to cut for you. Exert only

light downward pressure. If you force thecut, damage to the bar, chain, or enginecan result.

S Release the throttle trigger as soon as thecut is completed, allowing the engine toidle. If you run the saw at full throttle with-out a cutting load, unnecessary wear canoccur to the chain, bar, and engine.

S To avoid losing control when cut is com-plete, do not put pressure on saw at endof cut.

S Stop the engine before setting the saw downafter cutting.

TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES

WARNING: Check for broken ordead branches which can fall while cuttingcausing serious injury. Do not cut near build-ings or electrical wires if you do not know thedirection of tree fall, nor cut at night since youwill not be ale to see well, nor during badweather such as rain, snow, or strong winds, etc. If the tree makes contact with any utilityline, the utility company should be notified im-mediately.S Carefully plan your sawing operation in ad-

vance.S Clear the work area. You need a clear area

all around the tree so you can have securefooting.

S The chain saw operator should keep onthe uphill side of the terrain as the tree islikely to roll or slide downhill after it is felled.

S Study the natural conditions that can causethe tree to fall in a particular direction.

Natural conditions that can cause a tree tofall in a particular direction include:S The wind direction and speed.S The lean of the tree. The lean of a tree

might not be apparent due to uneven orsloping terrain. Use a plumb or level to de-termine the direction of tree lean.

S Weight and branches on one side.S Surrounding trees and obstacles.Look for decay and rot. If the trunk is rotted,it can snap and fall toward the operator.Check for broken or dead branches whichcan fall on you while cutting.Make sure there is enough room for the tree tofall. Maintain a distance of 2-1/2 tree lengthsfrom the nearest person or other objects. En-gine noise can drown out a warning call.Remove dirt, stones, loose bark, nails, sta-ples, and wire from the tree where cuts are tobe made.Plan a clear retreat path to the rear and diag-onal to the line of fall.

Direction of Fall

Plan a clear retreat path

FELLING LARGE TREES(6 inches in diameter or larger)The notch method is used to fell large trees.A notch is cut on the side of the tree in the de-sired direction of fall. After a felling cut ismade on the opposite side of tree, the treewill tend to fall into the notch.NOTE: If the tree has large buttress roots, remove them before making the notch. If us-ing saw to remove buttress roots, keep sawchain from contacting ground to prevent dull-ing of the chain.

10

NOTCH CUT AND FELLING THETREES Make notch cut by cutting the top of the

notch first. Cut through 1/3 of the diameterof the tree. Next complete the notch by cut-ting the bottom of the notch. See illustra-tion. Once the notch is cut, remove thenotch of wood from the tree.

Notch

First cut

Second cut

Final cut here. 2 inches abovecenter of notch.

S After removing the wood from the notch, make the felling cut on the opposite side ofthe notch. This is done by making a cut abouttwo inches higher than the center of thenotch. This will leave enough uncut woodbetween the felling cut and the notch to forma hinge. This hinge will help prevent the treefrom falling in the wrong direction.

Openingof fellingcut

Closing ofnotch

Hinge holds tree on stump and helpscontrol fall

NOTE: Before felling cut is complete, usewedges to open the cut when necessary tocontrol the direction of fall. To avoid kickbackand chain damage, use wood or plasticwedges, but never steel or iron wedges.S Be alert to signs that the tree is ready to fall:

cracking sounds, widening of the felling cut,or movement in the upper branches.

S As tree starts to fall, stop saw, put it down, and get away quickly on your planned re-treat path.

S DO NOT cut down a partially fallen treewith your saw. Be extremely cautious withpartially fallen trees that may be poorlysupported. When a tree doesn’t fall com-pletely, set the saw aside and pull down thetree with a cable winch, block and tackle,or tractor.

CUTTING A FALLEN TREE(BUCKING)Bucking is the term used for cutting a fallentree to the desired log size.

WARNING: Do not stand on the logbeing cut. Any portion can roll causing lossof footing and control. Do not stand downhillof the log being cut.IMPORTANT POINTSS Cut only one log at a time.S Cut shattered wood very carefully; sharp

pieces of wood could be flung toward opera-tor.

S Use a sawhorse to cut small logs. Neverallow another person to hold the log whilecutting and never hold the log with your legor foot.

S Do not cut in an area where logs, limbs, and roots are tangled such as in a blowndown area. Drag the logs into a clear areabefore cutting by pulling out exposed andcleared logs first.TYPES OF CUTTING USED FORBUCKING

WARNING: If saw becomes pinchedor hung in a log, don’t try to force it out. You canlose control of the saw resulting in injury and/ordamage to the saw. Stop the saw, drive awedge of plastic or wood into the cut until thesaw can be removed easily. Restart the sawand carefully reenter the cut. To avoid kickbackand chain damage, do not use a metal wedge.Do not attempt to restart your saw when it ispinched or hung in a log.Use a wedge to remove pinched saw

Turn saw OFF and use a plastic orwooden wedge to force cut open.

Overcutting begins on the top side of the logwith the bottom of the saw against the log. When overcutting use light downward pres-sure.Overcutting Undercutting

Undercutting involves cutting on the under-side of the log with top of saw against the log. When undercutting use light upward pres-sure. Hold saw firmly and maintain control. The saw will tend to push back toward you.

WARNING: Never turn saw upsidedown to undercut. The saw cannot be con-trolled in this position.Always make your first cut on the compres-sion side of the log. The compression side ofthe log is where the pressure of the log’sweight is concentrated.

LIMBING AND PRUNING

WARNING: Be alert for and guardagainst kickback. Do not allow the movingchain to contact any other branches or ob-jects at the nose of the guide bar when limb-ing or pruning. Allowing such contact can re-sult in serious injury.

WARNING: Never climb into a treeto limb or prune. Do not stand on ladders, platforms, a log, or in any position which cancause you to lose your balance or control ofthe saw.

IMPORTANT POINTSS Work slowly, keeping both hands firmly

gripped on the saw. Maintain secure foot-ing and balance.

S Watch out for springpoles. Use extremecaution when cutting small size limbs.Slender material may catch the saw chainand be whipped toward you or pull you offbalance.

S Be alert for springback. Watch out forbranches that are bent or under pressure.Avoid being struck by the branch or thesaw when the tension in the wood fibers isreleased.

S Keep a clear work area. Frequently clearbranches out of the way to avoid trippingover them.

LIMBINGS Always limb a tree after it is cut down. Only

then can limbing be done safely and prop-erly.

S Leave the larger limbs underneath thefelled tree to support the tree as you work.

S Start at the base of the felled tree and worktoward the top, cutting branches andlimbs. Remove small limbs with one cut.

S Keep the tree between you and the chain.Cut from the side of the tree opposite thebranch you are cutting.

S Remove larger, supporting branches withthe cutting techniques described in BUCK-ING WITHOUT A SUPPORT.

S Always use an overcut to cut small andfreely hanging limbs. Undercutting couldcause limbs to fall and pinch the saw.

PRUNING

WARNING: Limit pruning to limbsshoulder height or below. Do not cut ifbranches are higher than your shoulder. Geta professional to do the job.S Make your fist cut 1/3 of the way

through the bottom of the limb.

BAR MAINTENANCEIf your saw cuts to one side, has to be forcedthrough the cut, or been run with an improperamount of bar lubrication it may be neces-sary to service your bar. A worn bar will dam-age your chain and make cutting difficult.Replace your bar if bent or the inside rails ofthe bar are worn.S Clean the oil holes after each 5 hours of op-

eration.S Remove sawdust from bar groove periodi-

cally with a wire or putty knife.
