JAMES E. LONGNECKER POOL

The James E. Longnecker Competition Pool is one of the nation’s topsmall-college aquatic facilities. The 8-lane facility is regarded as one of thefastest pools in the region and is reserved solely for use by the College’sswimming and diving and water polo athletes.

The Pool features two one-meter diving boards and one three-meterboard as well as five Power Rack stations. An eight-lane electronic ColoradoTiming System is integrated into the pool and scoreboard. The scoreboardfeatures eight lines for results, three lines for event/heat and scoring and ascrolling line that shows lane-by-lane results.

The shallow end of the Pool is seven feet; thus the facility is able to hostseveral Collegiate Water Polo Association events that are restricted from“shallow-deep” pools. Since 2000, Grove City College has hosted severalCWPA championship events.

The James E. Longnecker Competition Pool is 25 yards in length and 56feet wide. It holds 408,913 gallons of water. The seating capacity of the Poolarea is approximately 400.

Although the Wolverines fell a mere 13 points shy oftheir sixth consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference title, the season still will be regarded as one of the more memo-rable campaigns in recent history.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

Few swimming and diving programs can match the tra-dition of excellence that has developed at Grove City Col-lege since the program’s 1937 inception.

With 58 all-time NCAA All-Americans, five national cham-pions, 563 victories and 61 straight winning seasons, onecan see that success is a way of life at Grove City.

Yet, numbers alone do not tell the story of the GroveCity men’s swimming and diving program. The programhas grown from humble beginnings into one of the nation’sfinest over the past 70-plus years.

Intercollegiate swimming and diving at Grove City Col-lege began during the 1937-38 academic year. During theprogram’s first five seasons, Grove City managed just eighttotal wins. World War II interrupted the program for fourseasons but Grove City continued to gain traction.

In 1950, the Wolverines went 5-6. Two years later, headcoach Jim Loveless led Grove City to its first winning sea-son with a 6-4 mark. That season began Grove City’s cur-rent run of 59 straight winning seasons.

Loveless coached the team until 1954, when RussWeider took over. In his one season as head coach, Weiderled Grove City to a 9-1 record and the school’s first Penn-Ohio championship.

Philip Sedgley coached the team to an 18-2 mark andtwo Penn-Ohio runner-up finishes from 1955-57. Followingthat season, Grove City hired a coach who would make animmeasurable impact on the swimming and diving pro-gram: Jim Longnecker.

In Longnecker’s first year as head coach, 1957-58, theWolverines went 6-5. That season, the program producedthe first of its 58 all-time All-Americans as Ubbo van derValk produced the eighth-fastest time in the nation in the100-yard breaststroke.

By 1962, Grove City emerged as the region’s preemi-nent program as the Wolverines went 12-0 and won thePenn-Ohio meet.

That season began a run of seven straight league titlesfor Grove City.

In 1964, Grove City hosted the first-ever NCAA CollegeDivision Swimming and Diving Championships. Grove City

placed ninth in that inaugural meet. Unfortunately, it wouldbe the last time Grove City participated in the national cham-pionships for some time.

Following that year, the College banned its teams fromparticipating in postseason competition.

Despite a 33-9 dual-meet record and four Penn-Ohiotitles over the next four years, Grove City did not competein the national meet, preventing several standouts fromearning NCAA All-America honors.

Grove City returned to the NCAA Championships in1969, finishing 36th nationally.

In 1975, after a 12-1 dual-meet record, Grove City took13th at the inaugural Division III Championships. That markedthe first of five top-20 national finishes for Grove City in the1970s.

Six years later, Grove City produced its first nationalchampion as diver Chris Van De Mark swept both the 1-and 3-meter diving titles at the 1981 NCAA meet.

In 1982, Van De Mark successfully defended his 1-metertitle and earned runner-up in 3-meter diving after helpingthe team to a 12-0 dual-meet mark.

The next year, Dan Young won the NCAA 1-meter div-ing title and in 1984, Clark Johnson captured the 3-meterdiving national title.

Grove City began competition in the Presidents’ Ath-letic Conference in 1984-85 and quickly emerged as the

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference con-tinues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics andthe pursuit of academic excellence.

Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany Col-lege, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City Col-lege, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More Col-lege, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg Univer-sity and Westminster College - the PAC remains a uniqueorganization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate ath-letics.

With academics at the center of each member’s phi-losophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athleticprogram is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself.

During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham, Genevaand Saint Vincent all joined the PAC. Chatham competed forPAC championships for the first time during the 2007-08academic year.

Saint Vincent first competed for conference titles in 2010-11. Geneva became eligible for conference titles in 2011-12.

The beautifully landscaped cam-pus of Grove City College stretchesover 150 acres and includes 28 neo-Gothic buildings. It is considered oneof the loveliest in the nation.

While the College has changedto meet the needs of the society itserves, its basic philosophy has re-mained unchanged since its found-ing in 1876. It is a Christian, liberalarts institution, dedicated to theprinciple of providing the highestquality education at the lowest pos-sible cost.

Wishing to remain truly inde-pendent and to retain its distinctivequalities as a private school gov-erned by private citizens (trustees),it is one of few colleges in the coun-try that does not accept federalfunds.

Affiliated with the PresbyterianChurch (U.S.A.), but not narrowly de-nominational, the College believesthat to be well-educated a studentshould be exposed to the centralideas of the Judeo-Christian tradi-tion.

Grove City College offers under-graduate degrees in liberal arts, sci-ences, engineering, business, andmusic and is distinguished as a na-tional leader in education.

Grove City’s programs in elec-trical and mechanical engineeringare accredited by the EngineeringAccreditation Commission Board ofthe Accreditation Board for Engi-neering and Technology.

The “big business school cur-riculum” prepares students fortoday’s global business reality. Anextensive variety of internship op-portunities are provided across thecurriculum.

Grove City College wants its stu-dents to be prepared in this age ofmobile information technology.

Each entering freshman receivesa tablet computer which is his or hersto keep upon graduation with afour-year degree.

This is part of the InformationTechnology Initiative, a total pro-gram integrating technology acrossthe curriculum.

The College believes that its stu-dent body has a unique mix of tal-ents and abilities.

Its Career Services programhelps students identify those key as-sets during the first year and thenbuilds a four-year strategy to helpthem pursue a satisfying career.

Personal counseling, profes-sional speakers, databases, alumnicontacts, summer internships, cor-porate visits, employer presentationsand more are incorporated into thecareer preparation experience.

Grove City follows the semestercalendar plan, in addition to offer-ing two-week sessions in Januaryand May.

Most of the 2,500 students livein separate men’s and women’s dor-mitories. The rest are local com-muters or married students.

A full program of cultural, pro-fessional, athletic and social activi-ties is offered, including 19 intercol-legiate varsity athletic teams.

Grove City, a town of 8,100people, is located 60 miles north ofPittsburgh. It is located nearInterstates 79 and 80 and has a mu-nicipal airport.

Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergonenumerous renovations and improvements in re-cent years, with more upgrades scheduled in theimmediate future.

On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is hometo the College’s football and track and field teams. The College installed CSTurf at Robert E. ThornField. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface thatfeatures polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rub-ber infill system.

The College also installed lights and resurfacedthe 8-lane track around the field. Grove City alsoreconfigured its setup for track meets during theserenovations.

In 2011, the College installed a new state-of-the-art scoreboard and new bleachers on the visi-tors’ side at Thorn Field.

These upgrades benefit the entire campus com-munity as the complex is used by both the College’sclub sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams.
