2015 APPROVED PARADE LIST

2015 Midian Sportsmen’s Event JUNE UpdateNobles and Ladies, we are getting closer to our 3rd Annual Sportsmen’s Event! The planning committee continues to meet and work out the enhanced Sportsmen’s event

we are planning and scheduled for August 1, 2015.We will have a MUCH larger facility to work with this year which includes a 10,000

square foot main event room and a 3,000 square foot dining room. With this expansion of facility at the Cessna Activities Center at 2744 George Washington Blvd. and the potential increase in attendance, we will need nobles to assist with funneling vehicles into the parking lot and getting them parked appropriately. If you can assist, please let the committee know - or, better yet, attend the meeting on June 29, 2015 in the Divan Room. If we run into an overflow situation in the Divan Room, we will move to another area in the Shrine Center.

We need everyone to really put their best effort into selling tickets as we start really ramping up now and closing in on the event. Please turn your ticket stubs and money in ASAP after you sell them. PLEASE retain any tickets you check out and do not sell. PLEASE turn these back in ASAP after the event.

As a reminder, this year, the event doors will open promptly at Noon. (Yes, I know the tickets say 12 am - that is a mistake - just tell your buyers that it is Noon and/or cross am out on your tickets and write in pm.

As a language change to define our refreshments, we will serve refreshments until they run out. Once we run out, that will be it. We have never and will never advertise this event or promise/guarantee bottomless refreshments. This includes ALL refreshments.

We will feature 2 full cash bars at this event. We will have at least the amount of refresh-ments we had last year. We will be able to better project our needs with you selling tickets early and turning your monies in as soon as you sell your tickets.

Upcoming planning meetings and schedule for the Sportsmen’s Event is as follows and ALL Nobles are welcome to attend:

June 29, 2015 Monday, 7:00 pm, Divan RoomJuly 27, 2015 Monday, 7:00 pm, Divan RoomJuly 31, 2015 Setup at Cessna Activities Center. Time & Details TBAAugust 1, 2015 Event at Cessna Activities Center. Everyone, we need your assistance to make this event a success. If you would like to

volunteer to assist with this event, please contact me at [email protected] or by my cell phone at 316-648-6525.

Yours in the Faith,Bart Ogden, 2015 Midian Chief Rabban

Arrangements came undone for the May meeting and some quick maneuvering by President Chris Nelson got us into True Lies while Noble Don Nelson intercepted everyone and directed them to our new venue. Good times and a good report by our Divan Liaison, Captain of the Guard Steve Julian, accom-panied by Lady Sissy, made for a nice night.

I don’t know if the old saying with April showers works in Kansas. It seems that the rain happens in May; or at least this year. Noble Richard Wentworth got part of his garden in, but was on hold with a rain delay the last I knew. Hopefully the growing season will work out.

If there is any chance you can make it on June 14 th to the Latham Lodge, they will be having their famous Fish Fry at 6pm. Bring a covered dish and have some fish. Not only

that, but Noble Jim Brewer will be celebrating his 65 th year

as a Mason and will be awarded his 65 year pin at an open meeting of the Latham Lodge.

The club voted not to have a Chuck Wagon Feed for the June meeting. As a result, BCSC we will be dark for June. But Noble Jim Reeves will still organize and host a Chuck Wagon Feed on June 13 th and would like to invite all his Shrine family to join the friendship and fun at 6pm for a mere $13.00. Authentic fare you would find on an old fashioned cattle drive and entertainment to boot are on order for the event. RSVP to Jim at 316-775-0550 (hm) or 316-737-1956 (cl) by June 10th so they can round up enough chow. If we don’t see you there, we will see you in July.

May was a busy month for Greenwood County. We started off by cooking over 200 steaks and serving hungry Shriners and their Ladies at the Pre-Glow. Then, we had a great turnout for the parade and showed off our new shirts in fine fashion. We welcomed two new Nobles into our ranks. Noble Paul Richard, and Noble Kelly McCormack walked the “Hot Sands” on their journey to Mecca. Congratulations and welcome to Midian Shrine. The weather was great both days, and the weekend was a success.

We had two winners this year for the 3-Wheelers Scholarship. Congratulations to Circle High School Senior Shelby Valentine, daughter of Noble Steve Richard and Lady Melissa, and granddaughter of Noble Eldon Teter and Lady Lynnie. The Eureka High School Senior recipient was Colton Pitko, son of Bill and Pam Pitko. We wish both of these young people success in their college careers and a bright and prosperous future. Speaking of graduates… This was a big month for the Teters… Congratulations to Lady Melissa Richard for graduating from Butler Community College. Way to go Melissa!

At our May meeting, not only was the attendance light, but there was one no-

table couple missing… Noble Eldon Teter was home taking care

of Lady Lynnie, who had just returned home from the hospital. She gave everyone quite a scare, but I understand

she is on the mend and doing well. It’s hard to keep a good person down!

Our other big event for May is Eureka Days. I am typing this before it happened, but by the time you read this, it will be in the history books. The Eureka Chamber moved it to Memorial Day weekend this year. I hope we had a great turnout of our Midian friends and everything went off as planned. Check in next month for the results.

Our next big event will be our first sum-mer cookout. We will be having our June Steak Cookout on June 12 at Phillips Cabin at Eureka Lake. Please get your reservations in and come out and enjoy a steak dinner along with an evening of fun and fellowship. Watch you e-mail and mailbox for all the details.

Finally, the black camel has touched us again. Lady Margie Zenishek, wife of the late Robert “Bob” Zenishek PP recently passed away. The old timers of our club remember Bob and Margie being very active in our club functions. Our thought and prayers go out to her grandson, Noble Topher Zenishek and the family during this time of loss.

“DOC” McCOSHReporter

“So many believers ask them-selves really naïve questions about the will of the “Spirit”! They imagine that “The Spirit” has specific intentions for them: where they should live, what profession they should pursue… Does “The Spirit” want them to marry and have children, or to remain celibate and devote themselves to “The Spirit”? Is the “ Spirit “ asking them to support or oppose such and such a person? The truth is that “The Spirits” will does not relate to each of our particular issues. The Spirit simply wants human beings to study and understand the spiritual laws and then strive to put them into practice. Of course, the will of “The Spirit” applies to each of us individually. YOU also have to know that we will only know what “The Spirit” expects of us when we have studied the divine will as a principle. Only those who begin by harmonizing with the divine will as it manifests in the principles of wisdom and love can truly know what “The Spirit” expects of them. “

As we explore the world around us and the unique forms of humanity that occupy it, we discover that our own lives are both quite similar to and vastly different from those of our culturally divergent neighbors. The simple act of asking questions and investigating systems of belief that differ from our own can be an eye-opening experience, as our preconceptions about the best ways of living are shattered. We give ourselves the gift of intellectual and emotional freedom when we embark upon journeys of learning that take us out of our usual routines. The greater our understanding of humanity’s diversity, the more willing we are to break away from the habits that once held us captive. Your longing for novelty can be a boon to you today if you allow yourself to open your mind to new possibilities.

Here we go and roll through month FIVE of Twelve months already. The Dodge City Shrine Club held their May 2015 monthly meeting on the 13th at the Casey’s Cowtown Supper Club.

I would have to say that this was a great turnout for the month of May. We even had Noble R. Acord & Noble Rocky from the Wichita Temple who drove out to spend the evening with us. It seems that everyone had a wonderful time with brotherhood camaraderie and great food.

The Dodge City group are still working on a “drive” for getting new members into the Shrine Club. The club continues to work in getting the one fire truck painted “RED” so come out and help get it painted so it can participate in the car show coming up soon out in Western Kansas.

Just about NINE ( 9 ) months – yes NINE months before

the 65th Shrine Circus to show up in Dodge City again. So please put this on your calendar and remind others to

put it on theirs also. This is the 65th Annual Dodge City Shrine Circus. The 2016 circus will be the weekend of 12th – to – 14th February. We are going to have 3 days and 8 shows for 2016.

Friday: Feb: 12 --2 showsSaturday: Feb: 13 - 3 showSunday: Feb: 14 - 3 showsYOU also have to remember that a

CIRCUS brings out the clowns, animal antics, magic shows, aerial ballets, wheel of destiny, jugglers, flying trapeze artists, performing elephants, maybe even this year there will be the human cannonball, Russian swing, three-ring displays and big cats.

You can never forget that the Circus brings you cotton candy, snow cones, peanuts, popcorn and soda while there – all of the proceeds go to a great cause.

The DC Shrine Club will hold their JUNE meeting on the 10th. The meeting will be held at Central Station Bar and Grill, 207 E Wyatt Earp Blvd, Dodge City. Phone number is: (620) 225-1176. Social time starts at 6:30 pm. Dinner is at 7:00 pm.

“Wherever you live, whether it is in a small room or a large house, the walls, furniture and objects are permeated with your emana-tions. This is the magical aspect of presence: you leave etheric particles on everything around you, particularly on the objects you touch, and these particles conduct positive or harmful influences. If you are forever sending out negative thoughts, words and feelings, these objects become like magnets, attracting everything in the universe that is bad. Of course, the opposite is also true: if your emanations are imbued with wisdom and love, you deposit good fluids on the objects around you, and they become conductors for light, joy and health.

From now on, make a habit of doing this exercise: learn to handle the objects in every room of your house with care and love, ask-ing the divine Spirit to extend its blessing to them. Say, ‘Spirit of light, purity and truth, I dedicate these objects to you, so that they may become a receptacle for you, an instrument for your power.’ Spirit will come to dwell in your home.”

“May All Your Days Be Circus Days”Have a truly blessed and wonderful month.Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen Good night America wherever you are.

Best wishes to long-time Club and Unit Treasurer, Noble Byron Brittain, recently celebrating his 96th birthday! Best known for his “We had some, we spent some, we still have some” financial reports, fit, healthy and happy avid golfer Noble “B” says the older he gets the easier it is to “shoot his age” on the course.

Hobo President Noble Don Dody is finally stepping down after more than a quarter-century of organizing our annual Club and Unit picnics, turning the reins over to VP Noble Rex Yohn. No easy life for Noble Don, however, as he’ll still be active with parade scheduling and attendance, meeting arrangements, member-calling and event notice mailing.

After many years and countless parades our old faithful Toter and companion Caboose will get some serious slickin’ and fixin’ in the near future. Caboose Committee Nobles

Cliff Knaus, Guy Wright and Lenny Wild have recommended a new roof, refurbishing and

reactivating the brakes on the trailer, along with new folding steps, some cosmetic paint work, and installation of a new trailer brake controller.

They feel the Toter is basically in good condition and replacement is not necessary, but recommended an evaluation of major me-chanical systems with upgrades and repairs made as needed. It was also mentioned that several of our members have the knowledge, facilities, skill and will to economically perform such work if required.

Driver Noble Cal Kessler said the old rig ran fine for the McPherson All-schools outing; next parade will be in Kechi June 27th with the usual hospitality at the Mayor’s home immediately following...join the crowd and come smile with us, the fun-iest Club in Midian.

Golden VIPS DAVID PATE, PP Reporter

Golden VIP’s met a t the Kansas Masonic Home, Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 11:30 am for social and 12:00 Noon for our meal. There were 20 persons present with three guests. Noble Vance Burns, Noble Gary Dix and Mr. Jim Mason, Director of the Great Plains Nature Center of Wichita, our guest speaker.

After the meeting was called to order by President David Pate, PP, the Flag Salute was led by Noble Jerry McDaniel and the opening prayer given by Joan Harris. Our members and guests enjoyed a great noon meal.

President introduced our guest speaker, Mr. Jim Mason, Director of the Great Pains Nature Center, 29th & Woodlawn. Jim explained that the Nature Center is a project between the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services and Parks Department of the city of Wichita. The project actually began in the early 1990’s with its focus on urban nature within the City of Wichita. The opening day for the center was in Labor Day of 2000. They are open Monday through Saturday 9:00 am until 5:00 pm and the admission is free to all.

Jim told the audience that the nature center has one of the most stocked and well-kept Gift Shop’s that are in other nature centers nationwide. Currently the Wichita Nature Center has Solar Panels for much of its electricity. This project was paid for by West Star Electric from a grant of

over 25 other grants statewide from West Star. They paid 100%

for everything, materials, labor and training on the equipment. Jim also invited our members to join in on the

festivities on Saturday, June 13th, 9:00 am until 4:00 pm for it walk “back to nature” in the park. This is a great opportunity to see the wildlife at its best in the park.

Jim stated that there normally is expected the attendance to be around 2,000 +/-.

Mr. Mason was then presented one of the Golden VIP’s famous Coffee Mug for his excellent presentation.

There were no Birthdays or Anniversary’s for the month of May. It was reported that Nobel Glenn Holmes is home now recover-ing quite well from his recent hip surgery.

President spoke to the membership about supporting an Advertisement from the Golden VIP’s for the 2015 Shrine Bowl of Kansas Football Program Book. He passed out a small copy of a proposed ad and after discussion, it was voted that the ad be a 1/4 page ad instead. And ad will be designed and sent to the Shrine Bowl from the Golden VIP’s.

Noble Art VanDresser reminded our members that the June Meeting will be our Annual Picnic at the Kansas Masonic Home as we prepare to go dark for July and August.

Closing prayer given by Joan Harris and the meeting was adjourned at 1:25 pm.

Ambassadors JOHN W. STEWARTMild Mannered Reporter

On May 8th, we met for dinner at the Candle Club. For those of you who missed it. The meeting was called to order by Director General and Noble Ambassador “Al” Bass. The invocation wad delivered by Chief of Protocol Noble Ambassador John Stewart, following careful advisement to “Keep it short”.

There was a consensus opinion that this was the best steak ever served at an Ambassadors gathering. I was quick to agree until I noticed the catfish on another plate at my table and I wasn’t sure I had ordered properly.

Following the meal our Liaison Officer Marshall Tom Propps brought us greetings from the Potentate and shared with us all upcoming events going on at the Shrine.

Noble David Pate, PP, our guest for the evening, made an appeal for our unit to support the Shrine Bowl with an ad in their program. A worthy cause which we voted to accept. This resulted in Chief of Council Noble Ambassador Art Van Dresser announcing that we didn’t have enough in our account to cover this ex-

pense. Consequently, we could expect an assessment to keep our

bank balance above $250.00. (We’ve not yet received our circus commission check).

The assessment was mailed the fol-lowing week for $25.00 per active member. Please be sure and get this in before June 1st. Thank you in advance.

The Wichita River Festival Parade on Friday May 29th was a beg success. As our RIVERBOAT “floated” by the reviewing stand the announcer declared:

“And here we have the AMBASSADORS OF MIDIAN. These SHRINERS, and their wives, are charged to greet and receive all Visiting fellow SHRINERS and their wives whenever they come to Wichita from around the world for Shrine Events promoting our slogan of: BROTHERLY LOVE, RELIEF and TRUTH ampli-fied in our SHRINERS HOSPITAL for CHILDREN and BURN CENTERS through THE PLANE of MERCY. We express this throughout the Fraternity by parading on our RIVERBOAT - hand built right her in Wichita”.

Directors Staff MARK BUTTERFIELDReporter

“He’s THE Guy”. Director Emeritus Fred Smith is also the President of Shrine Directors Association (SDA) for 2015-16. Fred was elected and installed during the SDA annual convention April 15-18 in Savannah, GA. Midian Shrine Directors Staff (aka “We’re with THE Guy”) also walked away with a plaque for the 3rd place stunt out of the 29 new stunts presented in the stunt com-petition. The “Water transfer” was well received by the judges and the audience. Man, what a great time everybody had, a magnificent experience and relationships built with Nobles from around the country. And as a first time attendee, it was extremely educational as history was learned, many questions about the structure of the Shrine hierarchy were answered for me and horizons broadened as friendships were made with SDA members from around the country that I hope to work with for years to come. One of the highlights of the trip was the excursion to Solomon’s Lodge #1 at Savannah, established in 1734 and the oldest continuously operating English Constituted Lodge Of Freemasons in the Western hemisphere. Masonic Historian and Lodge #1 Past Master Rick Willis gave such an enlightening talk specifically about his lodge and Masonic history in general that

captivated his audience for over an hour and could have gone on the rest of the

evening without losing his audience. WELCOME NEW NOBLES of the class

of spring ’15! It was our honor to work with you and for you during Ceremonial Day. We hope that you will always remember us from the stage during the first section of your ceremonial at the Scottish Rite Auditorium. And we’re sure that you will always remember “us of the red coveralls” back in the Mecca room for the second section. We trust that you enjoyed the day as much as we did. Would you like to enjoy every Ceremonial Day as much (and probably just a little more!) as you enjoyed yours? You can! Stop by and try on a set of red coveralls of your very own. The Directors Staff meets at the Isis Room at 7:00PM on the first Thursday of each month. Our ladies meet in the Oasis at the same time. It is an inexpensive unit, a fun-loving unit, very active yet non-demanding unit. You don’t have to buy a vehicle or an instrument, we don’t parade every weekend, we have A LOT OF FUN on a couple Saturdays each year plus some good times, good fellowship and good eats in between. Become one of us. You’ll be glad you did!

Keystone Kops “MOON”Reporter

Hello again my friends. It seems like we are racing through this year. I remember just writing a Topics article and here we go again. Lots of things have happened since last time though. A mighty band of Koppers and Friends blasted away at the Shell Knob Shrine Club annual fishing tournament that raises money for our Shrine Hospitals. Unfortunately the Friends came out on top of the mighty Keystone Kops this year with Gene Helm and Chip Chappell taking top honors in our group of entrants. Steve and Kent Potter came in behind them and the Koppers fol-lowed closely behind. It was announced as a big upset though, so we Kops didn’t feel too bad. Us Koppers are already planning on some surprises for our Friends next year so there will not be another major upset. Better watch your boat plugs and kill switches my Friends! Looks like more fun to look forward to in 2016. Oh, I can’t show any pictures but the ole Mooner had a rough go of it on Friday practice day. They say I never write about myself so there it is. I have recovered completely and have adjusted my wardrobe and schedule accordingly for 2016.

Then several of the Kops and their Ladies made Illustrious Sir Wayne Wells’ Potentate Ball. I saw pictures and it looked like everyone ate, danced and made merry all night long. I think some more than others but still a good time with a good band.

The 2015 spring addition of the Midian Shrine Ceremonial came next as planned. It was a hoot. Preglow was rocking and the Oasis was packed. It lasted all night it seemed. Then it was up and at them for the Chief’s breakfast. I have to say that was one of the best breakfasts I have ever eaten. Jackie Broyles and our Chief Scotty Clark along with Lady Charlene did a job on breakfast. Many of the Kops and their Ladies made the event to kick off Ceremonial day at Midian. Then the “boys” went to work for a surprise parade routine in honor of our Potentate and his association with the awesome Midian

Oriental Band. It looks like there is a new band in town. Just take a

look at this month’s picture and you will see the new drummer for the OK band unit. I am sure Wayne Wells was

surprised and honored with the skit in his honor. I have to give credit to our Chief Scotty Clark for this one. Three cheers for Scotter!!

I know the Koppers went to Benton and enjoyed the parade and Assistant Rabban Rocky McWilliams’ hospitality. Many more parades are planned and don’t forget our Midian Keystone Kop Forty Year Celebration and party on June 6th.

I Wonder?? The Midian Oriental Kops?? I Wonder?? Playing one of those big ole drums looks pretty easy doesn’t it?? I Wonder?? What Kops will show up at Table Rock Lake in June?? I Wonder?? Is it July already?? I Wonder??

Provost Guard CARL L. LOSEY Reporter

The meeting was opened a t 7 :35 by Marshal l Dennis Brunhoeber there were 18 members and several ladies present.

He thanked everyone for help-ing make Ceremonial a success and especially Dan and Jessica for the Jungle Juice which caused the unit to win 2nd place in the table competition, only the Cartoons were above us by winning lst place in memorial of PP Roger Snellen. It was decided that our juice have a new name it will be called Provost Juice.

Motion was made and seconded to accept last months minutes as written and passed. Motion was made to accept the

treasure report as presented.Liaison report by Mike Ward,

he thanked everyone for helping at ceremonial and discussed member-ship asking everyone to bring in new

shiners, Festival of Trees by the ladies and wanted all brothers to help sell novel-ties at the River Fest stating that Midian has the sole rights to those sales for all 10 days of the festival and stressed how much money can be made from it and to sell the gun tickets for the Sportsman event.

Don Brunhoeber ask about paintball teams and if anyone would be interested.

The meeting was adjourned.

NomadsThe Midian Nomads don’t let

a little rain dampen our spirits. Although the May outing was shared by many other Midian activities we had 6 campers and many joined for a nice breakfast prepared by the Bloomin Buddies of the Ladies Oriental Shrine Arami Court #101. More Nomads made the short drive for the meeting and auction. Thank you to everyone for spending part of your busy weekend with us at the lake. The

Next camp out will be June 12th & 13th at Lake Afton Shelter

SidewindersFirst, I would like to thank

everyone for the amazing reception that was given to the Midian Shrine Sidewinders at the 2015 spring ceremo-nial parade, David Brown Jr., Kent Butz and myself, had a blast showing off for everyone that came to see the parade. Many folks saw the three of us sliding around through the streets of Wichita during our parade debut, and knocking it out of the park with a few awesome 360’s across the finish line in front of our brand new nobles, the Midian Divan, Illustrious Sir Wayne Wells and Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder.

Two of the three Sidewinder trikes were completed just hours before ceremonial kicked off on Friday night, which left us no time whatsoever to tune our machines. We found a little time during lunch to break out our trikes and warm them up a bit and do one final safety check before the parade, well I think we had thirty different people

outside watching us at one point, and taking the brand new

trikes for a test spin, everybody loved them. I’m sure there are many pictures of everyone taking turns riding them

with huge grins on their faces. If you have pictures of us before, during or after the parade we would love to see them, you can post pictures and videos directly to our Facebook page, Midian Shrine Sidewinders.

One more thing before I wrap up this monthly installment, our regular monthly meetings are on the third Thursday at 7pm in the Oasis Lounge at Midian and we would like to welcome those that are interested in becoming charter members or who are simply curious about our new parade unit. We have some pretty neat things in the works right now, so come check us out, and again, thank you for supporting us and Midian Shrine, and most of all the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Captain Cy Lampe led the May meeting at the Scotch. Midian’s Ill. Sir Wayne Wells was present with a very detailed and fact filled report on Midian Activities.

The Motor Patrol was represented at the Potentates Ball by Ill Sir John Auch and Lady Julie, Noble Norm and Debbie Conley. Of course our own Assistant Rabban Rocky and Lady Bev McWilliams and High Priest and Profit Reiferd Acord and Lady Judy were up in front. The band was great to dance to. The food was really great for any banquet. We attended the breakfast the next day also.

The Motor Patrol supported the Midian Spring Ceremonial. Pre glo and the After Glo were fun for the unit.

Noble Bruce Detwiler is getting better. We miss member Noble Archie Moon.

Jeepster pictures and History of our activities are found on the www.

Million Dollar BandThe weather cooperated!

The rain waited until the Support Local Law Enforcement Parade was through. The Million Dollar Band filled up the trailer with horns and drums and people to play them and tooted down Main Street and over to Water.

We also were planning on our participa-tion in the River Fest Sundowner Parade as the Topics deadline arrived. That has a great crowd and provides a good way for Midian to remind Wichita that we are here and we are fun.

The DixieKatz were preparing to per-form their toe tapping music as the rest of you gather for the Stated Meeting on May 20. Curt Ghormley has been sitting in on tuba the last couple of rehearsals. Long-time tuba player, Noble Gene Peterson, is preparing for a move to the Denver area so he an Lady Jan will be near their daughter. We wish them well. Curt is doing a splendid job.

I contend that playing Dixieland music

is more than fun. (It is fun!) It is helping preserve an early form

of America’s great art category, Jazz. As the 20th Century began, musicians in the South, particularly in New

Orleans, started something. Jazz is no longer the popular dance music of today, it is now music you hear in concert or as music adding ambience to some event.

Another category of this music we are helping to preserve is the “Big Band” sound: saxes, trombones, trumpets and a rhythm section. Our DanceKatz maintain a book of swing era music plus some more recent approaches to this type of Jazz.

When the Million Dollar Band plays prior to the shows at the Shrine Circus, preservation of a type music is part of what we do. Our folders have music that was used in the early part of the 20th Century for the Hey Day of American circuses.

We are always open to additional folks helping us to preserve great music.

Arab PatrolThe Patrol showed up in force

for the Potentate’s Ball. Although we had double duty as Color Guard and Honor Guard, everything was working like clockwork except for one little incident that earned someone the title of “Sergeant Stitch” (or is it “Sergeant Shtick”).

As you know, we already have a couple of Patrolmen with coveted titles. Patrolman Brian West was dubbed “Captain Stab It” for his mishap with the balcony during a ceremony at the Scottish Rite. And I was given the title of “Captain Nemo” when my remote controlled golf cart decided to go scuba diving in a pond at MacDonald Golf Course.

Back to the Potentate’s Ball, whenever the Potentate makes an entrance, the Patrol comes to attention and present arms with their sabers. Sergeant Devon Olson was in the process of raising his saber when the haft guard got caught on his coat causing the point of the saber to come up sharply and nicked the side of his nose. He was very lucky it caught his nose as another inch higher and he would have caught it in the eye. Anyway, it started to bleed and trickle down his nose as the Potentate Wayne Wells and his Lady Teri made their entrance. Not flinching or breaking rank, he ever so slowly leaned forward so the blood would not drip on his coat. He stayed that way during the entire introduction of the Divan and unit heads. What a trooper!

Many Patrolmen and their ladies stayed for the ball and included Captain Kyle Rhorer with Lady Jo, First Lieutenant Larry Tomes with Lady Michelle, Second Lieutenant Brian West with Lady Amber,

Second Lieutenant Steve Travis wi th Lady Aubrey,

Oriental Guide Jay Danler with Lady Tracy, Past Captain Dick Simpson with Lady Anita, Veteran Patrolman

Ron Fisher with Lady Lise, Patrolman Sanford Kauffman with Lady BJ and myself with Lady Jackie.

At the Potentate’s Breakfast, Larry Tomes and I in our double duty roles as Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors presented Potentate Wayne Wells with a Kansas Shrine Bowl Honorary Quarterback Certificate.

Attending the Spring Pre-glow were Captain Kyle Rhorer, 1st Lt Larry Tomes, 2nd Lt Steve Travis, Past Captain Dick Simpson, Oriental Guide Jay Danler, Patrolman Greg Barley, and myself and their ladies.

After breakfast at the Beacon early Saturday morning, the Patrol assembled at the Scottish Rites Consistory for the Spring Ceremonial Honor Guard. Potentate Wayne Wells had heard about the saber incident at the Potentate’s Ball, conspired with Captain Kyle Rhorer and presented Devon “Sergeant Shtick” Olson with a saber tipped with a Red Nose ball from Walgreens. A good laugh was had by all.

The Captain would like to thank all the patrolmen and their ladies for their help at Spring Ceremonial. Although we were limited to one table this year, we made the most of it without Steve’s favorite Chicken Fajitas. We are getting our two tables back next year.

Upcoming events includes the Riverfest novelty sales and Kechi Parade. Until next time, keep in step!

Cartoon JOHN GRACY Reporter

Brothers, Ladies and friends, we have experienced a terrible loss in our lives and our fraternity. I’m not an eloquent orator, in fact sometimes I’m awkward in the most casual of conversa-tions, but if I write my thoughts down, I can express myself in a manner in which I do communicate well. Like most, sometimes I’m guilty of not expressing my feelings. I think we often say we are doing well, when in reality we are not doing so well at all. And it’s okay to not be fine, because time passes and with it the sadness fades. It’s the fond remembrance of moments passed that live on. But this recent loss has caused me to evaluate the things in life that I think are important. So bear with me for a moment, as I share with you a part of my own story, and perhaps together we can get to a place where we are, truly, doing well.

On April 23rd, Roger G. “Mickey Mouse” Snellen, made his final journey home to stand in the presence of his Creator, and what an amazing addition to Heaven he will make, but he was such an incredible person who made a difference in so many lives, he leaves behind a big hole that is tough to fill. Roger was the type of man that truly understood and always demonstrated what it means to be a Mason. He was never too busy for a chat, and always offered good council, and a great story to go along with it. A perfect role model for any young Mason, and that’s how I saw him since we first met. The type of person we should all aspire to be.

My wife’s Grandfather was the first Mason I had ever met. None of my family were Masons, and none of my friends were either. I was completely ignorant of what Freemasonry was, and what the fraternity was all about. What I did know, was her Grandfather was one of the best men I had ever met, and was someone who I wanted to emulate. The only problem was we didn’t live in the same state, and it just wouldn’t make sense for me to petition a lodge 8 hours away that I would never be able to attend. So one day I hopped on the computer, and Googled “Freemasons in Wichita, KS.” Whomever was running the website for Albert Pike Lodge must have been doing something right with the keywords, because I was redirected immediately to their webpage, where I found contact informa-tion for the secretary. There was a phone number and an email address, and since I have always been uncomfortable talking to someone I don’t know, you can guess which I chose. It wasn’t long before I got a reply that someone would come to my house with a petition. While I was very excited to be taking my first steps into Freemasonry, you can imagine how nervous I was. I was scared to talk to a stranger on the phone, and now a stranger was about to come to my house.

There is a reason why Roger was such a big part of the investigative committee. Walking up to my door was an older gentleman with white hair and a suit. I wasn’t sure what to expect, because that wasn’t like my wife’s grandfather at all. You see, there weren’t a lot of suits being worn in a tiny country town in Missouri. Then Roger smiled, the way he always did, with the corners of his eyes squinted and I could see a genuine friend there before me. As he talked to me about what the fraternity was, I could see that he was just like the only other Mason I knew, with a certain warmth and sincerity that decades of Freemasonry cultivates. It was because of Roger that I felt comfortable petitioning a fraternity of strangers. He was the master of our lodge that year, but he still made the time to come to my home and talk with a young man that he had never met, and take back with him a petition to one day call him a brother.

I didn’t know anyone for awhile, aside from Roger, and the

other two who came out for my investiga-tion. It is hard for me to really get to know new people. If it wasn’t for my wife, I’m

sure I wouldn’t have as many close friends as I do. Yet I went back, because I knew I wanted to be in the company of men with the same astounding character as Roger and my wife’s Grandfather. He was instrumental in my making the best decision I have ever made. He was also the reason I chose to join the Cartoon Unit after becoming a Shriner. Being at his side when he dressed as Mickey, he showed me the priceless intrinsic value of putting a smile on a small child’s face. We all knew that when Mickey Mouse made it out to an event, the rest of us may as well have been chopped liver, because we wouldn’t get any attention at all from the kids in attendance. That’s just the way it was though. Whether dressed in costume or not, kids just seemed to gravitate towards him.

After I learned he had passed away, I thought a lot about how much he really meant to me, and about how I don’t think I ever really told him how much I appreciated him. I thought about all of the missed conversations that can now never be made up for. I looked through the last five years worth of pictures, and there glaring back at me in stark disappointment was an overwhelming lack of memories preserved with my friend and brother. You never really think about losing someone until it’s too late.

It is so easy in our great fraternity to stay busy. There is always something to do, things to plan, meetings to attend, work to be done. Some days it seems that there just isn’t enough time available to accomplish all that we want to do. Often we spend more time planning for an event than actually doing the event. When it all comes down to it, none of that ever really matters. The whole purpose of this fraternity is brotherly love, and we so often miss the mark. I couldn’t care any less if our time together isn’t perfectly planned out and executed. To me, it is never about what we are doing. It’s about the people around me that I’m doing things with. My brothers around me, their families with my family, sharing a memory. Those memories fade over time, as I painfully learned in the week following the passing of my friend, but the love shared between friends and brothers, impressed upon our hearts, lasts forever.

I suppose what I’m trying to say is, I don’t want to repeat the mistake of missing out on the opportunities to appreciate what it is we have together. I value each and every one of you, and our time together is precious, yet fleeting. If fate should bring that we never have an opportunity to meet again, you are all important to me, I appreciate you, and I want you to know that. Balancing work, home, and all of our fraternal activities can be tough, and the stress it causes comes wave upon wave. When given the opportunity to get together, it’s usually spent trying to make everything happen according to how we planned it out, when it is typically the unexpected bumps in the road that make the best stories. Let us spend that time in the joy of company among our brothers and families, as opposed to missing out on the often serendipitous memories we come to cherish. And of course, a lesson that I learned in all of this, take more pictures.

In loving memory of our beloved brother and friend, Roger, thank you for being a beacon of light among the often tempestuous seas of our busy lives. May your memory continue to inspire us, as you did in life, to cherish our loved ones, make time for strangers, and that the point of life is to enjoy it, not just survive it.

Horse PatrolWe will not be having a meeting

in June, as the Captain and his lady will be on the

NOBLES….This i s SAD SAK reporting live from KLOWN ALLEY…letting you know of a few of the KLOWN units recent functions. Just recently we were involved with the City of Derby and its KITE DAY CELEBRATION, an annual event that is a great time for all involved. This year our unit KLOWNS….”HAPPY” and GO LUCKY….CLIP CLOP….MR. ARV….and one of our new KLOWN members BEAR, braved the elements (rain) to provide the entertainment to those in at-tendance. It was reported to have been a good time and well attended….We want to thank the City of Derby for supporting our Klowns and allowing us the pleasure of be-ing part of there annual program activities.

As we continue to get busier this time of year, and the fact that us KLOWNS think we are getting older….the golf cart we have had to carry us all around has been in the process of a little upgrading. Myself as well as yourselves….can only imagine what that might turn out to be….with KLOWNS heading the project….

With the parade season upon us, and the awesome list of activities upcoming…it will be a nice addition to our unit to have it up and running and available to us…One important thing to remember to STAND CLEAR….Its hard to navigate and to stop a golf cart with KLOWN Shoes.

Well I have been summonsed to

Makeup..so we invite any new members to MIDIAN as well as

any current members at MIDIAN…to talk with any of the KRAZY KLOWNS if your interests has ever

been to know what it feels like being behind KLOWN Makeup, and to be able to make people smile….even those who don’t smile very often. TRY IT….YOU MAY LIKE IT….

Once again MIDIAN SHRINE….Thank You for providing us the opportunity to do what the world needs most from us….Putting a smile on a face that can use one. JUNE KLOWN Birthdays go out to SCOTT “CLIP CLOP” OPPEGARD…and oldie but a goodie JERRY “CHEESEY” CRAFT….and yours truly MARK “SAD SAK” SLOYER….

See Ya under the Big Top….

YoshiYoshi is working on a Shrine

Bowl Program ad and we are plan-ning on submitting it this month. We have decided to accept donations from the unit to help fray unit costs for the ad. The unit will pick up the difference for the ad. Don’t forget to bring your dona-tion to this month’s meeting so we can get that turned in.

We also have several members that are planning on going to the Shrine Bowl located in Hays, KS on July 25th. If you plan on going get with the other members so we can coordinate plans for the parade and other activities. The more the merrier!

We have started our parade/CSSA prac-tices, cart maintenance, and social hour on Sunday evenings at 6 PM. If you can make it come down for the gathering, practice makes perfect.

Our meeting in July will be on the 6th

and it will be a coed meeting. Bring your Lady to discuss the

the group. The Kechi parade is June 27 and Yoshi

will be hosting the hospitality at Ed Parker’s house again this year. We will need help with the food and preparation. We have plans to get together for the food preparation and we will discuss that in our next meeting.

Flying FezzesThe Flying Fezzes are sad

to report that the Black Camel has taken our loyal member, Noble William “Buck” Fischer . As a nursing home administrator, Buck had several opportunities including Wichita, eastern Kansas, and western Kansas. He was in the process of moving back to the local area for a position in Sedgwick. He was being seen more often at local events and we looked forward to his more frequent involvement.

Buck was very active in Boy Scouts and the various Masonic bodies with several accomplishments including Past Master of Albert Pike Lodge, No. 303. He is perhaps best remembered for his many photographs, from formal to candid, of

all of us and all our events. As a member of the Flying

Fezzes, he accompanied Noble Brian Mauden on several flights to the Galveston Shrine Hospital. He did

not confine himself to just our unit, but represented us well in the Central States Shrine Aviation Association and also in the International Shrine Aviation Association.

In our long standing tradition, Masonic honors were provided at his funeral service. Buck’s corporal remains were laid to rest May 2nd in his boyhood home of Hannibal Missouri. His spirit and memories remain with the many lives he helped and touched throughout his stay on earth. We are proud and honored that Buck chose to be a part of our organization.

Electraglide EliteOkey dokey then, here we go

June already! Captain Steve was right on with his “ataboys” for Spring Ceremonial…sometimes the most fun comes from no plan at all. Not sayin there was no plan at all, but it did come together at the last minute and will be hard to beat. Janice and Noble Robert Miller are offering franchises for their “Deviled Eggstraordinary”. Seriously there were people everywhere asking where the deviled eggs were. This reporter was headed for the Oasis and ran into a couple from Stillwater, OK (friends of a New Noble) and they were talking about those eggs, which were already gone by the way…didn’t have the heart to tell em! Great Day, great fun with great folks! Congrats to Brothers DJ and Slugbug as they were in the Parade pitching those Sidewinders sideways.

Bug-O-Rama just ahead, and EE’s chance to shine again with funds for Shriner’s

Hospitals! As always, help if you can, round up auction prizes if

you can and it is never too late for a spon-sor. We can make sure a sponsor gets some recognition one way or another.

We should be pimping those Sportsmen’s Event tickets too ya’ll, Talk about easy money. No investment, just mention what’s going on and they’ll almost sell themselves. Let’s try and raise the bar on this again.

At the last meeting there was talk of a movie night at the Oasis sponsored by Electraglide Elite with several suggestions for the flic itself. All agreed that the idea was sound enough but whether the date was set is uncertain. If we got behind this thing there might be some profit along with fun. Maybe a couple of bucks for a grab bag, or a little (dare we use the word) raffle for a cool HD item. Think about it, and let’s make something happen. Until we meet again, ride safe but for sure ride!

Arami Court JAN HIEBERTReporter

Parade season is well underway. Arami Court’s Kandyland Klowns have been in several already and will be clowning around in the Wichita Riverfest Sundown Parade, followed by the Kechi parade. Watch for these colorful Ladies along the parade routes.

The Bloomin’ Buddies prepared breakfast for a small group of Midian Nomad campers at Lake Afton on May 9. The Kan-Du-Dancers will be cooking up breakfast for them on June 13. Be sure to join them. The Buddies will be giving away their bowling ball turtle on June 4 so get your tickets now - $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.

Just in time for 4th of July cook-outs, Arami is taking orders for STEAK, one of our most popular fundraisers. Choose from 8-oz. filets for $5.50 each or 12-oz. t-bones for $13.00. Lady Dianna Clay or any Arami Lady can take your order. Delivery date is June 26. Get ready for summer outdoor cooking!

Arami Court is pleased to be participating in Kansas Shrine Bowl banquet by taking out an ad in their program. Supporting Midian, Shrine Bowl and the kids!

Grand High Priestess, Lady Joy Moore will make her official visit to Arami Court

June 19-20. Friday evening June 19 we’ll all meet at Spears’

on west Maple to host Lady Joy for dinner. On Saturday all members are encouraged to attend a Court meeting

at 11:00am. After the meeting, our Ladies and Trailers will enjoy a carry-in dinner. Just sayin’, we are good cooks!

In preparation for an August 8 Ceremony of Initiation, an interview session will be held on Monday, June 29. Candidates for the degree will be given information about membership in LOS and will be able to have their questions answered. We have about 15 petitions at this time. It’s not too late to be included. Either contact Lady Terri Wells or myself for a petition OR just attend the interview session. We are a dedicated group of women who have fun doing the serious work of supporting the children in Shriners Hospitals.

A new unit is in the planning stages – “Kulinary Kuties”. This will be a cooking unit. If you’re interested, plan to attend a planning meeting on June 9 at Midian. All LOS members are welcome to attend.

Until next month, we will be letting our “Beacon of Light” shine.

RECRUITA SHRINER

Daughters of the Nile SUE SHEETS JPQReporter

Several members of Zohar are busy getting ready to attend our Supreme Session which will be in Albuquerque, NM June 10th thru June 14’h We are busy making hotel reserva-tions, deciding who is riding with whom and what duties we will have. We always have a good time and Queen Sue will be treated like Royalty. We will elect new Supreme Officers, make changes in legislation, and best of all see friends that we only see at this time of year. We will have our June session before we leave. It will also be a ceremonial when we will induct several new princesses.

I am saddened to let you know that Magdala Temple No. 137 in Salina, KS has closed but excited that several of their members have ask to be affiliated with Zohar. We will be happy to have them and look forward to them attending our sessions as often as possible.

Queen Sue has presented Zohar with several opportunities for fund raising. Queen Sue has made a quilt sing Crown Royal bags. We are selling raffle tickets for this quilt. The drawing will be in October. Tickets are $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00. The quilt is lovely and tickets can be purchased from any member of Zohar. Queen Sue also informed us we can sell tickets for the Gun Raffle which Midian is hosting on August 1”, 2015. Zohar will

receive $5.00 for each ticket we sell. Last, Queen Sue has received a

leg prosthesis from the Shrine Hospital in St Louis. She has permission to display it at each of our sessions plus

some other events. Money collected in the prosthesis will go to the Convalescent Endowment Fund which goes directly to the hospital. This is our main purpose, to support the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

On a very sad note, one of our longtime members, Pat Snellen, lost her husband in April. Roger Snellen, Past Potentate of Midian Shrine in 2000, was a very big supporter of Daughters of the Nile. He will be missed by all of us. Kira Robinson, one of our newer members lost her grandmother a few days later. Our condolences to both ofthese families.

On a happier note, Zohar had a very good showing at Midian’s Spring Ladies Luncheon. Several members won door prizes which were some very nice bears. Imagine that! Our very own PR Chaplain, Judy Raaf won the jewelry from Mike Seltzer Jewelers. Congratulations to all of these ladies.

I want to encourage all of our members to attend our Stated Sessions and support our Temple. If you need a ride contact any of our officers and arrangements will be made for someone to take you.
