Not many people do - but just bear with me. Some greenhouses are massive, some small, some dilapidated, some new and sparkling. All are vulnerable to external threats. The thin shell of the greenhouse, made by us to the best of our abilities, provides the conditions for growth. Inside are rows and rows of pots growing seeds; some small and delicate, some big and strong. In my greenhouse I see these pots as the problems that we have faced in life and the plants that grow in them as the ways we have developed to deal with these. For instance, when I was a small child I clutched at my mother's skirts as she opened the door to our house. I could not reach the door handle and had absolutely no idea how to open it. Eventually I mastered the art of door opening and in that particular pot grew a small if somewhat uninspiring plant. There are rows and rows of these pots in my greenhouse. But why do I keep all these plants in the pots? Why don't I release them into the soil to stretch their pot bound roots and spread? The pots are all my conceptual thoughts and habits. The soil is the basic consciousness, forever free, creative and expansive. The sun is the dharma, the watering can is the teacher and the water is our practice. The Eight Verses of Thought Transformation The Eight Verses of Thought TransformationBy Geshe Langri Tangpa

This mind training (lo-jong) root textwas composed by Kadampa GesheLangri Tangpa (1054-1123). Theverses were translated by LamaThubten Zopa Rinpoche at KopanMonastery, 1980, and lightly editedby Ven.Constance Miller, 1997.

1. Determined to obtain the greatest possible benefit from all sentient beings, who are more precious than a wish-fulfilling jewel, I shall hold them most dear atall times.

2. When in the company of others, I shall always consider myself the lowest ofall, and from the depths of my heart hold others dear and supreme.

3. Vigilant, the moment a delusion appears in my mind, endangering myself andothers, I shall confront and avert it without delay.

4. Whenever I see beings who are wicked in nature and overwhelmed by violentnegative actions and suffering, I shall hold such rare ones dear, as if I had founda precious treasure.

5. When, out of envy, others mistreat me with abuse, insults, or the like, I shallaccept defeat and offer the victory to others.

6. When someone whom I have benefited and in whom I have great hopes givesme terrible harm, I shall regard that person as my holy guru.

7. In short, both directly and indirectly, do I offer every happiness and benefit toall my mothers. I shall secretly take upon myself all their harmful actions andsuffering.

8. Undefiled by the stains of the superstitions of the eight worldly concerns, mayI, by perceiving all phenomena as illusory, be released from the bondage ofattachment.

Geshe Tashi's columnHello everyone,For a long time I have been thinking of gettingsome experience in the Western academic world. Itwas one of my long term aims and His Holiness theDalai Lama encouraged me to pursue this aimwhen I accompanied him on one of his Europeantrips a couple of years ago. So I have been workingtowards this goal and I am happy that I am now inthe position to become a student this September.Hopefully by studying in a Western university myunderstanding of Western culture will broaden andthen I will be better able to understand the thinkingof everyone around me. I will be studying for anM.A. in Social Anthropolgy, a subject that hasinterested me for some time.Of course, I will not allow the fact that I am studyingto detract from all my commitments here atJamyang but I will be reducing my commitments in other parts of the UK andoverseas. Effectively I will concentrate on teaching here at Jamyang and atJamyang Leeds. There will be some changes at Jamyang; for some time wehave been planning to reduce my evening commitments but maintain orincrease my weekend commitments. So I will only be teaching on Wednesdayevenings next term. I hope all of you who come on Tuesday's do not find this tooinconvenient. This weekend I am in Austria on one of my last foreign teaching trips, then it isback to Jamyang for the July classes and then the summer retreat. I hope to seelots of you then.

Director's ColumnThe Solstice has passed already, the 'super'moonhas begun to wane and July promises to be a verybusy month as the second half of the year beginshere at Jamyang. The Board of Trustees meetsnext week, and we are hosting the FPMTEuropean Regional Conference over the weekendof 12, 13 & 14th - 62 delegates will be comingfrom FPMT organisations all over Europe toexchange and share best practice as we furtherdevelop and realise the vision of theregionalisation agenda. Geshe-la's Tuesday andWednesday teachings continue and his spring tosummer programme culminates as he leads the Summer Graduated PathMeditation Retreat at the end of the month. The cafe refit had to be postponed following Ian's unfortunate accident but he ismaking a good recovery and should be able to supervise a volunteer carpenterand get this work completed during the August Work Camp. In the meantime thecafe is open for business as usual

The July edition of Mandala is out and we have published our September toDecember programme. Esther Garibay's excellent obituary of our own muchloved and missed Ven. Lobsang Palmo (Eve Hardman) appears in this edition ofMandala - don't forget that Robin's Summer Jamyang Walk has been designedto bring people to Jamyang in time to participate in Ven. Palmo's memorialservice here this Saturday. There also are some great teachings, wisdom andadvice from Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa, articles and pictures from LamaZopa's East Asia and His Holiness the Dalai Lama's visit to the EnvironmentalSummit at Matripa College in Portland, interviews with Yangsi Rinpoche andRob Preece.Jirka has finished his stint with the hospitality team but has been fortunateenough to secure a place on the Samye Dzong volunteer programme, so we willbe able to see him around for a while yet. Many thanks to Alex for the donationof the bike! We are really grateful for his service and ideas for the furthergreening of some of our waste disposal processes. Michelle will also be muchmissed. She has also moved on having secured a University place in Belgium.Sara from Holland continues and Mireille from Belgium has joined the team. Weare also very happy indeed to have Jen continuing with us until October. Violetta is flourishing in her new post in the Cafe and the volunteer support thereis also very strong at the moment - Jan Lucca has also returned to help out for awhile after a period in one of Jamie Oliver's kitchens. The courtyard garden was open to the public over the weekend of 8 &9 June.Over 150 people passed through over the weekend despite cool weatherconditions. Open Garden Squares Weekend organisers kindly provided 10volunteers to help with ticket sales. The garden looked beautiful and we hadsome very positive feedback. Ros and her helpers organised a plant sale whichraised nearly £170, with all proceeds going towards the new roof for the Buddhastatue. The cafe did brisk trade and proved very popular. A return visit by one ofthe visiting garden groups took place this week. Jamyang and the Cafe arebecoming much better known on the gardening and cafe circuit. Over thecounter sales to members the public currently account for 70% of the Cafe'sturnover - it is already fulfilling its promise as a service to the wider communitysince it started trading as an independent Community Interest Company lastAugust.Earlier this month, Vinod met with Kate Hoey, the MP for Vauxhall. It was auseful meeting in which she warmly acknowledged Jamyang and its contributionto the local community. Linda Phillips MBE, founder of local charity Roots andShoots talked about how Kate had supported that charity resulting in royalpatronage and visits from the Prince of Wales. Linda Phillips expressed interestin CCC supporting her organisation's staff through stress reduction andmindfulness practice sessions and we are following this up for her via ourLondon Centre for Mindfulness offering.Architects Carden & Godfrey have been appointed to take forward the work todeliver the improvements and renovation of the front of the building so we willhopefully see this project realised at last before the year is out.Enjoy the coming month and much look forward to seeing many of you here atJamyang to take full advantage of the wide range of spiritual and communityevents on offer.

Volunteer Treasurer needed at JamyangOne of our key initiatives in Jamyang is to support thelocal community through the cafe. The cafe is extremelysuccessful, bringing in a fair crowd on most days. In fact ithas been so successful that it was launched as aseparate Community Interest Company last year. This is because Jamyang, as a registered charity, has strict limitson the amount of commercial activity it can engage in.The Courthouse Cafe Community Interest Company isnow looking for a volunteer Treasurer. The role requiressuitable experience in finance, book-keeping or accountancy. You would be amember of the CCCIC Board and take responsibility for the financial aspects ofthe cafe operation from financial controls to financial reporting. It is a part-timerole that would involve a few hours commitment a month, once the overallfinancial system is in place. If you would like to know more about the job a fulldescription is available from Roy. Please email him at [email protected]

Jamyang Walk - 6th JulyMemorial Walk for Venerable Palmo - 6th July2013

A few years ago we did a very enjoyable walkthrough the principle Parks of Central Londonthreading our way back from Hyde park toJamyang in bright sunshine. There seems no guarantee this year of theweather, but in full summer the trees and flowerswill be at their best, so this offers a delightful wayto see nature in the heart of the city.As there is a ceremony for Venerable Palmo atJamyang on the same day, rather than cancel thewalk, both events can be catered for for those whowould also like to be back at Jamyang by 2pm. Ifwe set off reasonably early the walk should onlytake a little over 3 hours, and there are plenty ofplaces along the route to catch transport onwards if need be.

Meet at Notting Hill Tube Station, Exit 1 on the South Side in front of Cafe Nerofor 10 am.

We then walk to the start of Hyde Park and explore the various places of interestlike the Elfin Tree, the Round Pond and Kensington Palace. Stroll past the

avenue of flowers overlooking the Albert Memorial and Albert Hall and on to seethis years Serpentine Gallery Japanese architectural installation. Across theroad is the Diana Memorial Fountain and a cafe where we can have a stopbefore following the banks of the Serpentine to Hyde park Corner and ApsleyHouse. Down Constitution Hill to Buckingham Palace and in to St. James Parkand on to Parliament Square and then to the small gardens at the side of theHouses of Parliament by the Thames. Over Lambeth Bridge to Lambeth Palaceand finally through the back streets to finish at Jamyang where some may wishto stay for the service for Palmo.

How is Buddhism taught in your local schools? We live in a multicultural society and it is importantthat all our young people grow up with a goodunderstanding of what Buddhism is about, and donot feel threatened by it. On the contrary theyshould know that our doors are always open towhoever wants to have a chat, a cup of tea, or toexplore their inner landscape. As part of the community in Britain, we are here tostay, and it is important that we make ourcontribution visible, and are perceived to be part of the 'home furniture'.

In each education authority area, religious education syllabuses and thecontents of the daily "Communal Act of Worship" are decided locally, unlikeother subjects. Each Local Authority has a committee called a "SACRE" -Standing Advisory Committee for Religious Education - made up of a certainnumber of teachers, local councillors and volunteers from the faith communitiesin each area. Jamyang Buddhist Centre represents the Buddhist Community onthe Lambeth SACRE, but many other SACREs are lacking a representative ofBuddhism.

If you would be interested in joining the SACRE where you live, or where yourchildren are or may be educated, please contact Mariano Marcigaglia via heremail, [email protected] who is coordinating this on behalf of theBuddhist Society and the UK Network of Buddhist Organisations.

London Talks by Alan Wallace 16 and 18 July

Gentle Voice July 2013

12 of 15 01/07/13 16:02

Don't forget that Dr Alan Wallace is in town in Julyand will be giving two talks, on 16 and 18 July.

This is the link to further details

Alan is famous for emphasising the foundationalmeditation technique of Calm Abiding (Shamata)and for his broad vision of the interplay betweenScience and Meditation.

Though this is a common practice, i.e not specifically Buddhist, without havingsome skill in it, at least to level 4 or 6, our practices whether at the Beginning orthe end of the Path, from the initial Scope of the Lam Rim or Highest YogaTantra will be shakey at best.

Lama Zopa has emphasised to his students a number of times that we need toget the realisation of Shamata. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has very openlyengaged in dialogue with scientists in our area of mutual interest, mental health

Go along and rekindle your interest in the mystery of being conscious, of beingaware.

You can turn up and pay at the door for these talks though the organisers wouldlike to know how many are coming (follow the link above in this article)

Signs of Change in TibetThe Asia Sentinel is reporting a possible change in thepolicy of the Chinese government towards religiousfreedom in Tibet. If true, this really is great news.
