The Levin family had never been on a break before and your fundraising helped them…

They had been experiencing extremely distressing times and their welfare agent felt time away together would help them bond as a unit and benefit them all. In approaching us we were able to arrange a simple break giving them much needed time away from home.

Mum, Sam, was in tears of happiness when we told her that her family had been granted a few days at the seaside.

On their return she said: “I don’t know if there are enough words to explain how much it meant to us. It meant the world.”

The Guilders family had been through a traumatic two years. They had suffered aggression, violence and emotional trauma forcing them to move home. This left them feeling like they had lost their freedom.

Their welfare agent told us, “They have just begun to rebuild their lives; the family are showing bravery and courage in every aspect. A break away would benefit them more than I could ever imagine.”

Mum, Tracy, told us “We have never had a holiday ever and I can’t imagine ever being able to afford one in the future. We would like the opportunity to feel free, happy and enjoy the company of each other in a new and safe environment. To feel a real family and share some happy times together that we could remember forever would be brilliant.”

Diary from KenyaBy cabin crew Ben Lucey& Iris Godden

Day 1We arrived in Mombasa and it was veryhot! 0745 and already nearly 30ºC. Wecaught an internal flight to Nairobi withKenya Airways (very impressive service)and Born Free Kenya’s driver StephenWanyaga and admin assistant PhoebeOdhiang took us for lunch withprogrammes officer Victor Mutumah. Then we drove through the city - therewere wild animals everywhere! – andarrived at Hotel Troy.

Day 2Stephen drove us to Amboseli NationalPark’s Serena Lodge - the most beautifulsetting with wildlife literally on thedoorstep. We met with Born Free projectmanager David Manoa and visited OlMoti school. Born Free has builtclassrooms plus dorms where childrenstay when their families take livestock tofind food and water.

Day 3We got up early to help Born Freevolunteers construct a ‘lion-proof boma’(enclosure) using wooden posts andchicken wire. During the night tribespeople can put their livestock in themiddle to protect them from attack fromlions. This prevents revenge killing –protecting cattle, sheep and goatsprotects the lions. It was a fascinatingexperience we will never forget.

Day 4We started at 7am and made our wayback towards Nairobi and then MeruNational Park, arriving at Ikweta safaricamp at 6pm - so a long day oftravelling. We were staying in luxurytents which was a surprise!

Day 5We walked to the grave of Elsa thelioness. It was a struggle to get there asit was deep in the bush but was wellworth it. This is where is all began withGeorge and Joy Adamson and Born Free!

Day 6After breakfast we headed into Merutown to visit another primary school. Wevisited each class to say 'Good morning'to the children before joining assembly,to be welcomed with prayers and songs. We handed over the books, pens andcrayons we bought for the children.

Day 7We were coming to the end of our tripand made the journey back toMombasa. We had the most amazingtime. This once in a lifetime trip haschanged my views - after the things Ihave helped with it makes me want todo a lot more for the charity, so they cando more for Kenya. Thank you Born Freeand Thomson!

“Having looked into the Family Holiday Association and the great work being done by them, the help they are giving to families in real need; it is an absolute honour to participate in their Team Starfish at the London Marathon.”“I have very strong beliefs when it comes to broadening the horizons of the children of say lesser

privileged backgrounds. Opening their eyes to a far greater world than that of their immediate surroundings and making them realise there is a world out there waiting for them which is really worth their hard work and attention. The Family Holiday Association is doing far more than giving needy/down on their luck families a much needed break, it is encouraging the children to aim high.”

“I’m very passionate about collecting in-flight revenue with the collection of unwanted coins and notes aboard the aircraft. I’m also a massive seller of onboard charity cards which support the Family Holiday Association.”“I’m running the London Marathon for the Family Holiday

Association because they do great work for families. I hope everyone can support me and allow me to raise as much money as possible. I have been set a target of £1,400. Thank you so so much.”

“I’m a strong believer in the brilliant work the Family Holiday Association do for deprived families within the UK. I am an advocate of the charity and always support events which are run at our head office in Luton to raise funds.”“Taking part in the London Marathon would be a huge personal challenge and I don’t feel that there is a more worthy cause than the Family Holiday Association to encourage me.”

SkydivingCalling all thrill seekers…take the plunge for the Family Holiday Association this summer!

So you work on a plane but have you ever wondered what it’s like to be attached to a parachute and jump out of a one at 13,000 feet?

Well, join us for our Family Holiday Association skydive day on June 1st at Hinton Airfield, Brackley Northamptonshire and you will certainly find out!

One of our regular supporters Kay Bunker from TUI UK & Ireland recently took the plunge for us

Kay was thrilled with both her jump and with the money she was able to raise… “So I survived the jump! I really enjoyed the day and the jump but would I do it again? Hmmm not sure, maybe with a lot of persuasion. I was petrified but so excited at the same time. You really don’t have time to think about it when you’re up there. The light goes amber, the door opens and then green and you’re falling at 120mph…arghhh!!!”

Scan here to watch Kay’s skydive.
