The focus for my report in this newsletter is on Student AttendanceRecently I attended a regional Student Attendance workshop. Representatives from schools right across the region heard from specialist attendance officers within DEC. A number of presentations from school teams also gave the opportunity to look at best practice models where schools have been able to significantly improve whole school student attendance.

Eden Marine High School will be reviewing our Attendance Plan to ensure we are continuing to work closely with students and families in relation to attendance matters.

Statistics clearly demonstrate that regularly high levels of attendance at school creates the greatest opportunity for improved learning outcomes to occur. The achievement of learning outcomes as students move through schooling creates further opportunities after school. Recent studies indicate there is a direct correlation between improved quality of life for adults and the level of secondary education they have achieved.

At Eden Marine High School, student attendance is marked throughout the day. This process is called “period by period marking” where staff electronically record student attendance each lesson via staff laptops and attendance software. This system allows for the identification of patterns of attendance and issues of truancy.

The school also operates a “PiPs” (Phone Intervention) program where an administrative staff member is employed one day per week to contact families of students whose non-attendance is of concern.

As a general guide, any student whose attendance falls below 85% is at significant risk of meeting sufficient education outcomes for their particular year.

Parent/s and caregivers are required by law to provide a written or verbal explanation to the Principal within seven days of any absence as to why their child was not at school. After seven days student absence becomes unjustified.

It is important that the school receives a written or verbal explanation because:

• It is a parent’s legal obligation to explain their child’s absence within seven days.

• It is a requirement that the school investigates all unexplained absences.

• It avoids the school and the School Attendance Officer from making unnecessary investigations.

• It is the way the school knows that your child was legitimately absent and not truanting from school.

If you have any difficulties in providing a written explanation for your child’s absence, please contact your school Principal.

If you know your child is going to be absent ahead of time you can apply for an Exemption from Attendance. This is a form that needs to be filled out before the absence takes place.

Exemptions can be granted for many types of absences such as surgery, taking a family holiday, elite sporting

events or if a student is the primary carer in a family for a period of time. If you are unsure if your child can be granted an exemption, please contact the school to discuss your situation. If you have any questions regarding attendance, please contact the school.

I have just completed making comments on Year 12 reports. I have been most impressed by the broad range of talented students and their achievements but also the positive comments made by staff towards all students “continuing to strive to reach their potential”. It is hoped that Year 12 use the last of their school time at school wisely in preparing for their HSC examinations. I know Mrs Taylor and Ms Findlay have been working tirelessly to support Year 12 in these final weeks. Their efforts and hard work is recognised and appreciated. The feedback from students in relation to the presentation of major works, performance practicals and language examinations has been very positive and should give all students great confidence as they move towards their HSC exams. I expect Year 12 to enjoy their final days at the school but also to be thoughtful and respectful. On behalf of the school community I wish them well for their examinations and their future endeavours.Ian MooreheadPrincipalLibrary NewsFantastic new books in the library for your enjoyment: The vanishing moment is a new YA novel from Margaret Wild. National Dinosaur Museum to the Eden Fisherman’s ClubFifteen of our students chose to visit the National Dinosaur Museum exhibition at the Eden Fisherman’s Club. The students studied the fossils and models on a range of academic levels and came away with a better appreciation of the diversity of life in the past.

Many of the students went home with gift of a fossil shark tooth (50 million years old), fossil crinoid stems and fossil sand dollars (flattened sea urchins).

Footy Fever - continued from front page...In the morning we woke up to find that Mr Gilbert and

Dave Larkham were cooking us toast with an overload of nutella and a drink of juice. Once everyone had eaten the lovely Kiah Miller and Grace Knox set off to braid everybody’s hair. Once matching and looking like a team completed with blue and white zinc on our faces we set off to play the big game.

We got to the stadium to find out that we were playing on the Greater Western Sydney training ground, which is much bigger to what we are familiar too. We saw our opponents training; they all had forceful kicks and powerful marks, which is when our nerves kicked in. We set off to do our own warm up before the first game against Strathfield High.

Luckily for us we won the coin toss which gave us an advantage for the first half. Before the siren the girls did their chant led by Dakota Hooper and Larissa Larkham that has been a tradition from the beginning. It was one of the roughest teams but our skill level and fitness proved to be a win. The goal scorers were, Grace Knox, Alex Smith, Kiarna Mitchell, Dakota Hooper, Jordan Parkes and Kyah Creswick. When the final siren went we wrapped up with a score of 43-4. Which secured the Eden Marine U/15s girls’ team a spot in the state grand finals. There were screams of happiness and phone calls to parents from excited girls. The word was soon spread around to all staff members who were just as excited as we were. With an hour and a half to kill before the grand finals the girls stocked up on food and sung a happy birthday to Harrison Warne (coach).

When the time finally arrived the girls were warmed up and pumped up for the grand finals. They sung their chant before running on to the field. The first half of the game proved to be a difficult one with the other team having strong opponents, the Eden team fought back and made sure that the back line was strong. Unfortunately Billabong High School was very consistent with their kicks and ended up with a win. The girls came off still excited that they made it this far, and achieved second place in the state. We would like to say whom the best players were but we couldn’t make up our mind because every girl on that field played exceptionally well and should be very proud of them.

On behalf of the U/15 girls AFL team we would like to say a massive thank you to the GWS giants, the Sydney swans, the paramedics at the field, the staff for supporting us, SCAFL League for their generous donation to fund our trip and John Dyball. We are very thankful for the help and support of Mrs Rutherford, Mrs Smith, Mrs Ruthven, Mr smith, Mr Gilbert, Harrison Warne and especially David Larkham. Without them this tremendous experience would never of happened.Written by Dakota Hooper, Larissa Larkham and Amber McGarrity.

Science Competition ResultsThe results were good again for the ICAS Science Competition this year. Although only ten students entered this year, the results were quite satisfactory, with a Distinction for Xiu Chen Han and Credit for Gemma Oliver. Well done and thank you to all concerned.

SEED Workshops – Self Esteem Education and DevelopmentEMHS in partnership with Campbell Page, on Wednesday 14th August, invited all Year 8 girls to attend the SEED workshops. Presenter Catherine ‘The Great’ Manning, ran a full day of fun, interactive, enagaging and empowering workshops to the girls. Building emotional intelligence and resilience, the SEED workshops taught the girls how to take control of their own lives and to help them realise their full potential. Topics on the day included: Talking the Talk; Respectful Relationships; Assert Yourself; Stress Less; Be Fine Online; Media Wise and Healthy Mind, Healthy Body. All the feedback from the girls was very positive with all girls indicating that they were hugely impressed with the presenter and that they all learnt a great deal about themselves on the day.

Catherine also indicated that the Year 8 girls were an absolute pleasure to work with. Congratulations to the Year 8 girls who represented our school so well.

Jump On Board with PBS Eden Marine High School will commence the first stages of its new PBS program that promises to promote good will amongst staff and students and help solve some of the minor issues around the school.

The school is aiming to promote Respect, Responsibility and Resilience as these are our core values and it is hoped that the PBS program will encourage students to display these characteristics on a regular basis.

- PBS aims to achieve improved social behaviour & learning outcomes of all students

- PBS is all about improving the culture of a school –making a positive environment

- PBS will align with the school’s mission statement which is “to help all students to reach their potential”

- PBS will also align with the school’s core values of Respect, Responsibility & Resilience

Respect: to treat someone or something with • consideration & regardResponsibility: to be accountable for your own • actionsResilience: to be able to withstand or recover quickly • from difficult conditions

Our first stage of the program will aim to target litter on the school grounds and in the playground. Litter was chosen as the first target area by staff and students. Students who have a clean area or willingly pick up their rubbish will be rewarded with a ticket. This ticket will go into a draw and students will have the chance to win some great prizes. These tickets are called free and frequent rewards. As the PBS program grows, these tickets will be used as rewards for various displays of positive behaviour by students.

All staff will be given a roll of Tickets to align with their designated sporting house –King (Yellow), Imlay (Red), Boyd (Blue), Flinders (Green). This acts as another way of promoting House spirit. Students displaying the positive behaviour will be given a Free & Frequent ticket.

Students write their name on the ticket & place into the designated drop off boxes around the school. The more tickets you receive the more chances you have of winning a prize. The tickets go into a weekly draw for canteen & Waves vouchers & movies passes. At the end of Terms 1 & 3 (2014) 10 minor prizes will be drawn from all submitted tickets -$25-$50 vouchers eg Mark Anthony’s, Georgie’s Fine Jewellery, Saltwater Dream, etc. At the end of both Semester 1 & 2 a major prize (such as an iPad) will be drawn from ALL tickets that have been submitted. Staff can also go in the draw for weekly, Term & Semester prizes by writing their name on the tickets they hand out

When a student ticket is drawn out if a teacher has their name on the ticket they also get that prize

Students and staff received information regarding the program via presentations during week 8 so that we are all working together to make Eden Marine High School an even better place to work and learn.

There are 2 other levels to the PBS system:Intermittent – These rewards are given out for behaviour that is displayed over a longer period or for exceptional results. These includes greenies, Sport rewards, Term Celebration Assemblies etc Long & Strong – Includes rewards for behaviour that is displayed over the course of a semester or school year and include Reports, Semester 1 & Speech Day Assemblies, End of Year Sailing ExcursionOver the next 2 weeks and next term students will be working on some mini lessons during roll call to help them understand the behaviour that should be displayed. The first lesson is called Clean Street / Dirty Street and aims to show the students how beautiful a clean school environment is to work in.Future lessons include a self-reflection on how clean students actually are, the catastrophic effects of rubbish on the environment and how to put your rubbish in the bin and look cool at the same time.PBS is all about recognising the positive things happening at our school!WHAT ARE THE OUTCOMES WE WANT TO SEE AS A RESULT OF IMPLEMENTING PBS?1. Increase in the number of appropriate student behaviours both in and out of the classroom2. Reduction in the number of behaviour disruptions, referrals, and incident reports and hence a reduction in the amount of time and effort spent dealing with these associated behaviours.3. Staff and students report a more positive, calm school environment….A place where we all enjoy coming to work and learn.4. Improved school culture and staff morale.Bin It, Win It, Grin It!

Fire-Fighting TrainingThis summer is already shaping up as a potentially busy fire season for NSW Rural Fire Services. However, here in the Eden region we can feel a little less worried thanks to a number of students from Eden Marine High School recently undergoing training in Basic fire-fighting skills.

Miranda Hadley, Kali Samuels-Connell, Sol Stone, Eli Wiebe and Hannah Webster attended consecutive weekend sessions at a training intensive course run at Burragate.

Pillow-TalkThe Year 7 and 8 students have recently completed learning a new set of technology and design skills before moving on to try their hand at something new.

Nickeeli Sawers, Abbi-Lee Scott and Tonya Russell are pictured with some of the amazing creations they have completed in Textile Technology. Not to be outdone, Jett Ringland shows amazement at the brilliant cushions he has produced, while Kyle Sorrell takes his unique design style all in his stride. Students learned a range of textile skills starting with understanding design principles to create finished products which are both artistic and functional. They gained both machine and hand-sewing skills, experimenting with applique, block printing, tie-dye and embroidery. Each project was designed by the students themselves with truly exciting results.

CanAssist Charity Gala Day Bega – Girls TagOn Tuesday, 3rd September Eden Marine High School girls competed in the League Tag Gala day at Bega.

The Year 7 & 8 girls team competed well with Alex Spivey scoring our first try against Lumen to go on to win comfortably. The Year girls made valuable contributions with Bronte Trease and Kiarna Mitchell working hard around the rucks. Out wide Ebony Pointon, Kiah Miller, Kelsi Ryan and Courtney Menz made valuable metres.

The Year 9 & 10 girls made the final with outstanding play by Madi Whatman, Courntey Maher, Rachel Hehir and Amber McGarrity. Mardi Longford made valuable contributions constantly putting her body on the line.

Zone Surfing Teams TitlesEden Marine High School competed in the tag teams surfing titles at Middle Beach, Mimosa Rocks.

The day was marked by the first swell in six-weeks and produced 2-4ft difficult conditions for the competitors.

The girls hit the water first with Grace Knox, Zali Kelly, Amber McGarrity and Madi Whatman charging hard. Madi made a few waves while Grace took a beating in the heavy shore break.

The boys were outgunned on the day, as quality waves were hard to find. ‘Speedy’ Jack Webster found it especially hard, while current bushy trophy holder Jai Miller got axed riding some lefthanders. Zac Slater was left high and dry with minutes remaining.

Bega High School took out the competitions with 91.5, Batemans Bay 68.5, Narooma 67.5, Moruya 51.5 and Eden 45.5. Narooma took out the girls on 72 with Eden on 44.

Special thanks again to Simon Emms at Merimbula Surf Shop who helped out again with $500 in prizes, while Ben Shaw at Raw Surfboards, Kai Otton’s Reef connections and Terry Heaneys Surf and Skate Shop in Narooma made sure that all competitors scored a prize. Narooma High School took out the Merimbula Sailboard Club Aggregate Shield.

Anglicare Pantry Appeal 2013Our teachers, students and parents mananged to fill over 30 bags with tins and packets of food for the Anglicare Pantry Appeal 2013. The generous quantitiy of food donated by our school community will support Eden families in need.

Year 9 PASS ExcursionOn Wednesday, 21st August the Year 9 PASS and some selected Year 8 students travelled to Canberra to participate in a series of physical activities. About 2 hours into the trip we made a stop at Bombalal to pick up some Year 9 students.

When we arrived to the Belconnel gym we were amazed by it’s size. It had childcare facilities a 50m pool, a baby pool, scuba diving facilities, weight room, hall of fame for the Canberra Raiders (which wasn’t very big) and massive dance studio and Spinning room with over 100 indoor bikes.

We met our instructor Angie and began our workout on the bikes. After one hour on the bikes and a cool down we moved to the weight lifting room. Another hour of exercise to follow before we set off for the AIS

At the AIS we met our guides, who gave us the grand tour of it’s facilities. In the games room we were able to challenge ourselves on the different types of equipment that measured reaction time, rowing, skiing, basketball skills and strength.

After a successful morning we had some well-earned lunch and a look around the shops. Next was bowling - some students played, others watched. At this stage most of us were getting weary but we still had one last activity - rock-climbing! There were a lot of instructions to take in from the instructors but everyone got in and had a go.

On the bus home we watched the movie ‘Dumb and Dumber’ for those who didn’t fall asleep!Written by Alex Roger, Year 9.

9-aside Rugby LeagueOn Tuesday, 3rd of September a group of Eden Marine High Shcool students travelled to Bega Recreation Ground for a 9-aside NRL CanAssist Charity Gala Day.

Our team of 11 boys departed from school at 9am and travelled on the noisy, hot and crowded bus to Bega. When we arrived we were pumped and keen to smash Bega and Lumen but Lumen were a no show.

The majority of our players were first timers and didn’t have much experience on the field.

The first game was against the Year 11 Bega Blue side. The toss was won and a strong defensive set from Eden started the game. As half time approached Kye Overend, with a powerful run down the lefthand side, burst through the defence to score the first points putting Eden in front at half time.

In the second half, we dropped our guard and Bega scored bringing it level. Eden then hit back with another strong try from Zac Slater out of dummy half but unfortunately the conversion was unsuccessful. Bega then kicked off but Eden were met by a wall of blue jerseys that was unable to be broken by strong runs from Mitchell Farrell and Jono Wolf. An injured ankle by experienced player Callan Sinclair weakened the defense and Bega won the game 16-10.

The second game was against a strong Bega yellow team but Eden started well with great runs by Josh McNally and Tim Gibbs.

Zac Slater continued to make ground from dummy half and scored his second try of the day. The inexperienced Corey Trease was left the goal kicking duties and he was successful with every attempt. Bega hit back with two fast try’s. Roly Stewart scored the next try for Eden. Bega kicked off and Lachie Hawkins made a charging run but was picked up by five Bega players and about to be back-slammed but Zac Slater called them off. The game was drawing to a close, Bega snuck in the final points of the score making it finish 18-10.

All the boys put in a great effort with great sportmanship and were fine representatives of the school.

On behalf of the boys they would like to thank Mr. Morgan for making the day worthwhile and possible.

A quote from Mr. Langford ‘I never doubt the Eden Marine High School rugby league sides in heart and character and again these boys, although inexperienced and at times out played, as soon as the put on the school’s jumper they play courageously and always give opposing sides a big shake. No wonder all the local schools hate playing EMHS’.

The closing date for entries is Friday 25th October. Please start thinking about and planning your entry. If you have any questions or issues please feel free to contact Paul Brunton or Russell Meers from BVCDAT on 64923228.
