1.3 Mass and weight

• Core• Show familiarity with the idea of the mass of a

body• State that weight is a force• Demonstrate understanding that weights (and

hence masses) may be compared using a balance

Page 3: 1.3 Mass and weight

1.3 Mass and weight

• Supplement• Demonstrate an understanding that mass is a

property that ‘resists’ change in motion• Describe, and use the concept of, weight as

the effect of a gravitational field on a mass

Page 4: 1.3 Mass and weight

Weight

• Weight = mass x gravitational field strength• W = mg• What are the units of g?• Weight is the effect of a gravitational field on a

mass.

Mass

• What is mass?• In Physics mass is quite unusual – one of the

aims of the most expensive Physics experiment ever – the LHC at cern is to find the particle responsible for giving matter mass it is called the Higg`s boson

Page 6: 1.3 Mass and weight

Two types of mass?

• From the equation W=mg• We can see m = W/g• This is known as the gravitational mass• g is the gravitational field strength• This mass is what is affected by a gravitational

field.

Page 7: 1.3 Mass and weight

The other mass

• From Newton`s second law• F=ma• m=F/a• This is called the inertial mass• This mass is how hard it is to change an

objects motion (accelerate it)
