ST. JUDE MISSION STATEMENT To know God, To love Him, To serve Him. St. Jude Catholic Community is a place where God’s presence is made visible through spiritual formation, community life, service and stewardship.

THE WIND AND THE SEA Living along the shores of Lake Superior—the “big lake,” as the locals call it—you can often hear the advice, “Respect the lake; don’t take it for granted.” People who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do. The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake described in today’s Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds. But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea.

"He who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. Indeed, what of: Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, do not steal, thou shalt not covet , and any other commandment, are summed up in this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself . Love worketh no ill to his neighbor. Love is therefore the law in its fullness "( Rm 13, 8-10).

Our OCA goal for 2015 is $41,766.00 . To date we have raised $38,017.67.

We currently have 626 donor families and have received gifts from 28.3% or 177 families.

SMALL CRAFT WARNING When I was twelve years old I was on a daylong fishing trip off the coast of New Bedford, Massachusetts with my father, uncle, and a few cousins. The day started out a calm one, with small swells gently lapping the side of our sixteen-foot boat. However, by mid-afternoon a small craft warning had been issued. This meant that boats the size of ours should attempt to make it to land as soon as possible. We were approximately seven miles from the harbor. Surging through the waves at first was lots of fun as the water playfully sprayed us. Then, through the salt spray we noticed a huge oil tanker cutting across the waters ahead of us. My uncle, who piloted the boat, warned us that when the wake created by that tanker hit us, it would be rough going. I remember putting my head down at that point. I began frantically saying many Hail Marys and Our Fathers.

Esta f r a c c i ó n s e m e z c l a b a e n e l c á l i z .

Why does the priest break off a particle of the host and drop it in the chalice? It happens during the Communion Rite after the breaking of the bread, and just before the Lamb of God. It is called “commingling” and dates back many centuries. In the early church, there was only one Eucharistic celebration in each city on Sunday. The entire Christian community gathered together and the bishop celebrated the Eucharist. As Christianity grew, it became physically impossible to gather for one liturgy and Mass was celebrated throughout the area. The presider or priest was appointed by the bishop. A small portion of the host consecrated by the bishop was taken to each of the Eucharistic celebrations over which the priest was presiding. This fraction was mingled into the chalice. Today the priest breaks off a small fraction of the larger host used at Mass and places it into the chalice with the prayer: “May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it.” The commingling symbolizes the Lord’s resurrection. In death, body and blood are often separated, but in life they are united. This small symbol serves to remind us that the sacrifice of Jesus is one that gives us all life. In the Mass, we join ourselves to his death, so that we might also rise with him to life.

GOD’S WORD TODAY During the past few years we have seen the tremendous destruction wrought by tsunamis and hurricanes. Surging water has a destructive power sometimes beyond imagining. We can understand why the disciples—most of whom were experienced fishermen—feared for their lives when the squall came up and waves began to break over the boat. This story, recounted in today’s Gospel, can inspire us to turn to the Lord when we are faced with those things that bring fear and desperation into our own lives. Let us not be afraid to ask God to come to our aid, especially when the storms of worry, fear, and anxiety begin to crash over our own lives.

CALMING LIFE’S STORMY SEAS That fishing trip ended happily. We made it safely over the waves created by the wake of the oil tanker. But that was the day I learned to respect the ocean and to appreciate its destructive power. One can only imagine the disciples, most of whom were experienced fishermen, being tossed about in that boat with the Lord, who was asleep on a cushion. These were men who knew the ferocity of the seas. In the last few years we have all seen the destruction caused by tsunamis and hurricanes. An onslaught of water is one of the most frightening things that humans can experience. It is within this context of terrible fright, testing the faith of the disciples, that the Lord calms the seas. We all have “stormy seas” moments when we experience fear. Let us not be afraid to turn to the Lord Jesus in faith, asking that he be with us, giving us healing and comfort.
