Specification for anodes, sacrificial zinc alloy

1 Scope 1.1 This specification covers the requirements for zinc anodes in the form of slabs, plates, discs, and rods for corrosion protection (cathodic protection) of metals and alloys. 1.2 The anodes are primarily intended to reduce corrosion of surface ship, steel and aluminum equipment and structures, sea chests, sonar domes, and the seawater side of condensers and other heat exchangers. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address the safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

3 Classification 3.1 The letter designations of types of zinc anodes have the following meanings:

3.2 Zinc anode type ZEP shall comply with ASTM 1182 and divided into 3 types as follows: 3.2.1 Type A - square slab. 3.2.2 Type B - circular slab. 3.2.3 Type C - semicircular slab.

4 Composition and specification 4.1 Chemical composition for zinc anode shall comply as in Table 2. Other elements that not stated in Table 2 but exist in zinc anode is a contaminant and these elements shall not exceed 0.1%.

4.2 Zinc anode types ZHS, ZHC, ZSS and ZTS shall have steel core that complies with

ASTM A36/A36M.

4.3 For zinc anode types ZHS, ZHC, ZSS and ZTS, each core must be coated with zinc at

a minimum thickness 0.0127 mm (0.0005 inch). The layer shall be attached and free from

flaking. The layer must stick firmly to the metal.

4.4 Nominal weight of each zinc anode is disclosed. Reduction of 8% of the nominal weight

of each type of zinc anode is the minimum weight. Each type of zinc anode must meet the

minimum weight requirement. Total weight of the total zinc anode received when divided by the

total number, shall equal or exceed the minimum weight of the zinc anode. If weighing less than

the minimum weight, total rejection of the lot will be done.

5 Manufacturing quality

5.1 Zinc anode surface should be free from rags, cracks, holes and slag surface. The

fractured surface which is more than 3.175 mm (1/8 inch) shall be rejected.

5.2 For the zinc anode of thickness less than 50.8 mm (2 inch), shall be free of shrinkage

cavities exceeds the depth of 6.35 mm (¼ inch). While zinc anode which has a thickness of

50.8 mm (2 inch) or more shall be free of shrinkage cavities exceed the depth of 9.525 mm

(3/8 inch).

5.3 Irregular surface having the depth more than 3.175 mm (1/8 inch) shall be rejected.

5.4 Zinc anode for type ZRN and ZPN types shall have a smooth curved surface.

6 Marking and Labeling

6.1 Zinc anode of types ZHS, ZHC and ZSS shall be permanently labeled with the word "DILARANG CAT" or "DO NOT PAINT" on exposed surfaces. For zinc anode types ZPN, ZTS and ZRN labelling are not needed.

6.2 Each zinc anode shall be permanently marked and labeled at least with the following: 6.2.1 Classification as in Table 1 6.2.2 Weight

7 Packaging

7.1 Zinc anode should be packaged in a suitable manner to avoid damage or wear as agreed by the buyer and the supplier.

8 Submission of documents 8.1 Supplier involved in supplying zinc anode should attach along the following documents during the submission:

8.1.1 Composition, classification and specifications 8.1.2 Certificate of origin from original equipment manufacturer

9 Acquisition notices

9.1 Acquisition of zinc anode based on composition that has been set shall include the following information: 9.1.1 Classification of zinc anode as in Table 1 9.1.2 Specification zinc anode which includes length, width, thickness, diameter and weight if needed. 9.1.3 Classification of zinc anode type ZEP (refer 3.2). 9.1.4 Quantity needed. 9.1.5 Additional requirements, if any.
