The 3M1.1 ™ Cable Bracket Kit 2178-S/LS-OPGW has been developed to accommodate OPGW cable.

Cable Preparation4.0

Note: This procedure describes cable preparation required to create water damming for OPGW cable.

Remove 96" (244 cm) of outer strands and center 4.1 tube exposing the buffer tubes. Prepare according to accepted company practices.

Place a stainless steel hose clamp (provided in kit) 4.2 or Scotch® All Weather Telephone Vinyl Plastic Tape 88T approximately 15" (381 mm) from end of outer strand.

Remove hose clamp closer to exposed fibers and 4.3 slide the proper size cable washer onto OPGW cable.

Unwrap at strands up to the hose clamp or tape.4.4

Place one wrap of Scotch4.5 ® Sealing Tape 2900-R on center tube in the area of the closure port.

Note: If OPGW cable has a channel-type central tube, knead 2900-R tape into channel area.

Re-wrap outer strands over 2900-R tape area. Move 4.6 the first hose clamp to approximately ½" (13 mm)of one side of 2900-R tape. Install the second hose clamp approximately ½" (13 mm) on the other side of the 2900-R tape.

Tighten hose clamps to allow 2900-R tape to ooze 4.7 between the wires.

Wrap an additional layer of 2900-R tape on top of 4.8 the wires in the same location as the inner layer.

Wrap Scotch4.9 ® Linerless Rubber Splicing Tape 130C around the Scotch® Sealing Tape 2900-R to the 1.05" tape collar gauge dimension provided in the 3M™ Fiber Optic Closure Kit 2178.

Note: This step is necessary to ensure proper damming of cable for water migration.

Note: If OPGW cable has multi-layer construction, apply 2900-R tape to each layer.

Wrap a few layers of Scotch4.10 ® All Weather Telephone Vinyl Plastic Tape 88T around exposed ends of outer wires.

Remove hose clamps and save for attaching cable 4.11 assembly to inner and outer cable brackets.

Slide an additional cable washer onto cable and 4.12 place cable assembly into closure base.

Remove the 3-prong section from bracket by 4.13 bending back and forth with pliers.

Install one hose clamp around cable and inside 4.14 cable strain relief bracket of closure and tighten to 40 in./lbs. (4.6 N•m ± 0.6 N•m).

Wrap a few layers of 4.15 Scotch® All Weather Telephone Vinyl Plastic Tape 88T around cable approximately where hose clamp will attach to outside bracket.

Install the second hose clamp through the slots of 4.16 the outside bracket and around the cable and tighten to 40 in./lbs. ± 5 in./lbs. (4.6 N•m ± 0.6 N•m).

Continue to follow along in instruction manual 4.17 78-8130-1910-2 provided with 3M™ Fiber Optic Closure 2178 for proper closure installation.
