Local Assessor Appointed to the New York State Assessor’s Association Executive Board

Jeneen Lomando-McSkimming, SCA was sworn in to The New York State Assessor’s Association Executive Board on October 6, 2015 during their Annual Conference. The NYSAA was incorporated February 14, 1940. The founders of the NYSAA established bylaws that required a 12 member Executive Board to oversee the operations of the NYSAA elected by the membership. The NYSAA has over 900 members throughout New York State. The NYSAA Executive Board formalizes the education and training process for Assessor’s throughout NYS as well proposing changes to legislation that affects New York State Real Property Tax Law. The Association is instru-mental in improving the standards of assessment practice, promoting professionalism, providing a clearing house for the collection and distribution of useful information relat-ing to the assessment of real property among municipali-ties throughout the state, and sponsoring legislation to im-prove assessing and taxation. Ms. Lomando-McSkimming has over 20 years’ experi-ence in the Assessment field. In 2006 she became a NYS certified Assessor and, in 2007, became the appointed As-sessor in the Town of Boston. In 2010, she was appointed as Assessor in the Town of Cheektowaga through a munici-pal cooperation agreement between the Towns of Boston and Cheektowaga. At that time sharing Assessment Ser-vices was not a well-known practice within larger towns, however, it became so successful in saving taxpayer money, that many larger towns are following suit. In 2013, she be-came the appointed Assessor of the Town of Evans which has entered into an agreement with the Town of Cheektow-aga where she currently serves as Assessor for the Towns of Evans and Cheektowaga. Ms. McSkimming has held the positions of Vice Presi-dent and President of the Erie County Assessor’s Associa-tion and served on the NYSAA Public Relations Commit-tee and the Ethics Committee. In 2010, she was honored to be the recipient of the NYSAA Innovation Award. Her experience, as well as her belief and strong commit-ted to providing continuing education for members of the assessment community, will make her contribution to the NYSAA Executive Board a valuable asset.

Charles Dickens: A Christmas Carol Event Held

The Evans Brant Chamber of Commerce hosted last Saturday November 28th ‘ A Christmas Carol’, a Charles Dickens presentation featuring the solo performance of Mike Randall. The event took place at the Angola Theater. The featured performance was preceded by Lake Effect Harmony Chorus, a group of 20+ women who entertained the audience with a mix of songs including many holiday favorites. It was a very entertaining evening and served as a great kickoff to the holiday season. A drawing was held at intermission for all those who had purchased pre-sale tick-ets. The winner of the drawing was Sandra Aselin. Sharon won a pair of free tickets to the Buffalo Sabres New Years Eve game. The Evans Brant Chamber of Commerce would like to acknowledge our sponsors for this event, Evans Bank and Bella Terra Greenhouse. Town of Evans Bake Sale Fundraiser A Success

The employees of the Town of Evans held a Holiday Ben-efit Bake Sale on Tuesday, November 24, with the proceeds donated to the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County. The bake sale items were donated by employees and purchased by both staff and residents. The United Way supports community programs in Edu-cation, Income, and Health & Wellness. Several local orga-nizations rely on funding assistance from the United Way to ensure that people in our community have the ability to live healthy, safe, productive lives. Lori Szewczyk, director of community development and Maureen Cournyea, senior accounting clerk for the Town of Evans, who co-chaired the annual United Way Pledge Drive, reported that the grand total raised from the bake sale was $283.75. Szewczyk and Cournyea expressed their appreciation for the donated baked items as well as the volunteers that helped staff the event. “We would also like to thank all the staff and residents who supported the sale and purchased baked items. Alene G. Hilton Alene G. Hilton of An-gola, NY peacefully entered into rest in her Angola home, November 29, 2015. Alene was born in Port Al-legany, PA on March 23, 1919 to Fred O. Gustafson and Ella A. Nelson. She was a 1937 graduate of Port Allegany High School and married her husband Eugene F. Hilton June 20, 1956. Alene is survived by her husband Eugene, brother Howard Gustafson of Port Allegany,PA, niece Nancy L. Nelson, nephews Jerry Goodnoe, James Gus-tafson, William Gustafson and Mark Gustafson, step-daughters Cynthia Ryan, Lois and Rebecca Hilton, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She is pre deceased by one brother and four sisters. Alene was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Farn-ham, NY were she was ac-tive with the choir, Mary Martha Circle and Treasurer of the Memorial Fund. Her hobbies included reading, crocheting, gardening and crossword puzzles. Funeral services will be held Satur-day, December 5, 2015 at 11 AM in the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Farnham, NY.
