It wasenough that she suered as a result o beng a chldibrde atthe age o nne to a man who was older than her own ather. It only added to that catastrophe that she was not allowed toremarry ater hs death.

Muhammads thrd marrage s a story o great tragedy, lled wth nothng but lust, sex and sensual desres. As youread, ask yoursel, Where were the trbal tes n ths story? What dd ths marrage have to do wth Muhammads supiiposed callng?

Te story began when Zayd Ibn Hartha was kdnappedrom hs arstocratc amly by some travelng Arabans whosold hm to Khadja, the rst we o Muhammad, who nturn gave hm as a present to her husband, Muhammad, tobe hs servant. But ater Muhammad heard hs callng toIslam, he reed Zayd and he adopted hm or a son publcly,

where he sad, Zayd s my son, I nhert hm and he nhertsme. Tereater, he was called Zayd, the son o Muhamiimad.

Later, he asked Zanab, hs cousn on hs athers sde, tomarry Zayd. She rst reused because Zayd was homely. Furiithermore, even though Muhammad adopted hm publcly,

he was consdered by the majorty o the Arabs as a slave.

For ths reason, she could not brng hersel to love hm, soshe sad to Muhammad, I you nsst on me marryng hm,I wll, but Id rather marry you, not Zayd. Muhammad niissted that she marry Zayd, and so t was. o convnce herto marry Zayd, a verse had to descend upon Muhammadrom heaven that commanded Zanab and all the Muslms

to obey hm:It s not ttng or a belever, man or woman, whena matter has been decded by Allah and hs Messeniiger, to have any opton about ther decson; anyiione dsobeys Allah and hs Messenger, he s ndeedon a clearly wrong path.44

Tus, Zanab marred Zayd. Up to ths pont, the mattercould seem logcal despte all o the coercon and duress that

were mposed upon Zanab. But what happened thereaterwas very pecular, shockng and appallng.

Te story goes on to tell us that one day Muhammad wentto vst hs adopted son Zayd. When he entered the house,Zayd was not home. Muhammad saw Zanab hal naked

as she was puttng her clothes on. Muhammad desred her,but he was arad to enter the house and commt adultery

wth her. As he was leavng, he sad to her, Prase be to Aliilah who changes hearts. Zanab smled and later told Zaydabout that vst and Muhammads statement. Zayd went miimedately to Muhammad and asked hm: Do you want meto dvorce her or you? Muhammad answered hm: Holdunto your we and ear Allah. Tat was ntally a noblestand on the part o Muhammad. However, what lledMuhammads heart and soul was totally derent than whaths lps expressed, or he really desred her as was reported

by AliZamkhashr: Te external appearance o Muhamii

mad dered rom what was nsde hm.45 Smply put, onthe outsde t appeared that Muhammad dd not want Zaydto dvorce Zanab. But hs ntentons were the opposte: orMuhammad ell n love wth Zanab when he saw her halnaked.46

Te Quran tells us that when Muhammad saw Zanab

hal naked, he ell n love wth her, and wanted her as hswe. However, he hestated because o what people wouldsay about hm, snatchng the we o hs adopted son. ButMuhammads god came to reprmand hm or hs hestaiiton. Strangely, t was Allah who wanted the woman to leaveher husband, and to volate all moral laws, so Muhammadcould have her. And ts n plan sght n the Quran:

Behold, thou ddst say to whom who had recevedthe grace o Allah and thy avour, Retan thou (n

wedlock) thy we, and ear Allah. But thou ddsthde n thy heart that whch Allah was about tomake manest: thou ddst ear the people, but ts more ttng that thou shouldst ear Allah. Ten

when Zayd had dssolved (hs marrage) wth her, wth the necessary (ormalty), we joned her nmarrage to thee.47

Lttle tme passed between Sura 33:36, where Allah eniicouraged Zayd to stay marred, and 33:37, where the god oMuhammad commanded Zayd to leave Zanab so Muhamiimad could marry her. What caused that god to change hsmnd? Was that god a toy n Muhammads hand, so a new

verse would come down to annul the verse that came beore

(the one that encouraged Zayd to keep hs we)? Dd not

Allah commandZayd to stay marred to Zanab? Was hs godunable to keep ther house together? How could Muhamiimads god nd t easy to destroy a home, so Muhammadsdesres could be met? Was that a god o justce and mercy?

In hs book,Te Lie o Muhammad, Dr. Hakal objected toths story about Zayd and Zanab. He descrbed t as shameii

ul, and he accused mssonares and western researchers oabrcatng t, tryng to demean Islam and ts prophet. WhenI was a Muslm, I wshed that Dr. Hakal was rght, and thatall those deamaton stores aganst Muhammad were justmakeibeleve abrcatons.

However, let us conront the btter act, and read the replyo Dr. bnt AliShat, a renowned, welliread Muslm scholar,

    who stated the naked truth:

Te story o Muhammad, the Messenger, admrngZanab and the story o Muhammad leavng herhouse sayng, Prase Allah who changes the hearts,

were told to us by good predecessors such as ImamAliabar n hs hstory book, and by Abu Jaar

Ibn Habb AliNabeh, and the beloved Aliabar, and the neghbor o Allah, AliZamkhashr. Tosepeople told us the story beore the world heard othe Crusades, evangelzaton and western mssoniiares. It s a rght thng to leave ther noton asde, and let us look at ths case as t was told by the two

abars and by Ibn Habb. Why should we deny thatthe Messenger was a human who looked at someonelke Zanab and admred her? Muhammad had neviier clamed that hs heart was n hs hand turnng t

whchever drecton he wanted, nether dd he everallege that he was nallble, wthout human lust. As

he got excted seeng Asha (more by Asha than the

other wves), he sad, Allah, do not blame me or notpossessng what you possess (selicontrol).48

AliZamkhashr, a great Muslm Imam, sad:

Te Messenger o Allah saw Zanab, ater he gaveher n marrage to Zayd, and he ell n love wth her,and sad, Prase Allah, who changes thngs.

Forget the mssonares and the western evangelsts. Justlook at the source o the Islamc story accordng to themams o the early centures o Islam. What was sad aboveby bnt AliShat, an accomplshed Muslm hstoran, wllclear any and all doubts.

Frst, the greatest Muslm scholars vered and afrmed

that the story o Zayd and Zanab was true.Second, Muhammad was not mmune rom lust and erotii

c passon. He was a human wth a human heart that lovedand hated, accepted somethng one day, and rejectng t thenext. And Allah supported Muhammad n all hs decsonsno matter what they were.

Moreover, Allahs endorsement o Muhammads actons was recorded n the two Quran verses mentoned above, where he commanded Zayd to marry Zanab n one, andlater, he sent down a verse commandng the same man todvorce hs we so Muhammad could marry her. How couldAlmghty God, the Just God, agree to such an atrocty? Howcould the Messenger o Allah lust ater someone elses we,

and how could he lust ater hs adopted sons we? Isnt lustiing and actng on the lust ater another mans we a crme?

Should we say, Prase be to Allah who made lawul to Muiihammad what he makes unlawul to the rest o the world?

Remember, Muhammad clamed to be a human lke us,

wthout nallblty and wthout any specal prvleges. Areeach one o us supposed to have our own god and our ownGabrel so we can do what we want and reject what wedont desre, allegng that god commanded, and that Gaiibrel brought down the verse that justed us?

It would be possble to overlook such acts done by an

ordnary or unbelevng man. But how can we overlookthem when they were done by someone who clamed to bea prophet o Allah such as Muhammad, who s supposed tobe the example o our le and our behavor?

Let us compare ths to the le o Kng Davd, the prophiiet Davd to Muslms. Davd lusted ater the we o anotherman. But though he was much beloved o God, God dd notlet the aar slde by just because Davd was a prophet and akng. Rather, God severely reprmanded and punshed hm.Gods threat rang throughout Israel, as He sad to Davd:

Now, thereore, the sword shall never depart romthne house because thou hast despsed me and hasttaken the we o Urah the Httte to be thy we.49

Consequently, Davd repented wth tears:Have mercy upon me, O God, accordng to thy loviingkndness Wash me thoroughly rom mne niiquty, and cleanse me rom my sn. For I acknowliiedge my transgressons: and my sn s ever beoreme Create n me a clean heart, O God, and renew

    a rght sprt wthn me50

In other words, God s a holy, pure God who does notcompromse Hs holness or any persons sns, whether t

s Davds or Muhammads. Te rue God punshes sn. He

does not reward t, ever! Consequently, the sword wreakedhavoc n Davds amly.

Lkewse, Muhammad behaved the same. Could that bethe reason the sword has been wreakng havoc n hs natonever snce t started? Snce the ncepton o Islam, kllng, murderng, and oppresson have been the norm.

Nevertheless, lets get back to the story o Zanab. Muiihammad dd not wat, as was tradtonal n such stuatons.(Such a transtonal perod s requred by Islam, but was notapplcable to Muhammad.) Zanab hersel explaned:

Ater the dvorce, mmedately, and behold, theprophet o Allah entered my house whle I was

wthout a headicover, and I asked hm, Is t gongto be lke ths wthout a guardan or a wtness? Heanswered me, Allah s the guardan and Gabrels the wtness. As a result o hs statement, Zanabboasted n ront o Muhammads other wves, sayiing: Your athers gave you n marrage, but as orme, t was heaven who gave me n marrage, to the

Messenger o Allah.51Durng hs letme, Arabs and Muslms crtczed Muii

hammads behavor, sayng he marred the dvorce o hsown son, whch was not legal. But or Muhammad to getout o such a predcament, Gabrel was ready to brngdown a verse rom hs god, statng he had never adopted

Zayd. Tereore, marryng Zanab would be legal:Muhammad s not the ather o any o your men,but he s the Messenger o Allah, and the seal o

the prophets: and Allah has ull knowledge o all

thngs.52Ts verse made t seem as though Muhammad had orii

gotten that he told the Muslms a short tme beore, Zayds my son, I nhert hm and he nherts me. And t s obviious that he dd not care that hs actons were the cause oabolshng adopton n Islam (even to ths day), just because

o hs lustul relaton wth Zanab. In other words, peoplerom around the world adopt Muslm orphans to allevatether msery, but a Muslm amly would not adopt a Musiilm orphan, to keep rom repeatng the story o Zayd andZanab n ther amles.

It seems that everyone and everythng had to work toiigether to satsy the lust o Muhammad, ncludng all theMuslms and the archangel Gabrel. Everyone was supiiposed to be prepared to do all thngs necessary, even gve upones we, and volate all moral laws, so Muhammad couldbe happy. What a prophet! What an example!

I should end the story o Muhammads marrage to Zanabbnt Jahsh wth a statement made by a great Muslm scholar

and recorded n hs book,Al-Sira Al-Halabia:I Muhammad lusted ater a marred woman, tbecame a must or her husband to dvorce her orhm.53
