THE BENEFITS OF EATING ANTI-INFLAMMATORY FOODS

We have all heard the phrase “You are what you eat”. Believe it or not, it is actually the truth. Through your diet, you can transform yourself and change the way you live and feel.

In a culture of fast food, instant gratification, and long work days, eating a proper diet seems daunting. To make the problem worse, the foods that are healthy are often more expensive than cheaply made fast food. That trade off has a price though, and one that we have come to accept as ‘normal’.

Inflammation is part of the body’s immune response. This response helps us heal, however, when it gets out of control it damages the body and causes issues like rheumatoid arthritis, among others.

Foods high in sugar and saturated fats, can spur inflammation. They cause overactivity in the immune system which can lead to joint pain and fatigue. As much damage as these foods can do to a body, the right foods can undo damage and inflammation.

What are the right types of foods? Add these foods into your diet regularly to help reduce inflammation and pain: fatty fish (salmon), whole grains, dark leafy greens, nuts, soy (not heavily processed), low fat dairy, colorful vegetables (especially tomatoes), ginger, turmeric, garlic and onions. You should also include plant based fats like olive oil. All fruits have anti-inflammatory properties and berries are considered one of the best for reducing inflammation.

Eating a poor diet affects more than your waist line, it can increase pain throughout the body. When you have an underlying issue, reducing chronic pain is always a struggle and one that a proper diet can help control. With a few minutes each week of planning and preparation, you can set yourself up for success.

CSL Behring files for approval of hemophilia therapies in Europe and Japan

Germany-based biotherapeutics firm CSL Behring has submitted its Marketing Authorization Application to the European Medicines Agency for its novel investigational recombinant factor VIII single-chain (rVIII-SingleChain) for the treatment of hemophilia A. In the pivotal clinical trial, rVIII-SingleChain met all primary endpoints.

“Our focused research and development and strong relationship with the bleeding disorders community led us to seek further advancements in the care and treatment of hemophilia,” said Andrew Cuthbertson, chief scientific officer and director of R&D, at Australian parent company CSL Limited (ASX: CSL). “Today, we have the only recombinant single-chain factor VIII product in late-stage development for the management of hemophilia A. We look forward to, upon approval, providing this innovative specialty biotherapy to patients in the EU and European Economic Area,” he added.

The MAA is based on the AFFINITY clinical development program, which includes a Phase I/III open-label, multicenter trial examining safety and efficacy. The pharmacokinetics of rVIII-SingleChain compared with recombinant human antihemophilic factor VIII (octocog alfa) was also studied.

Seeks approval of hemophilia B agent rIX-FP in Japan

CSL Behring has also submitted its New Drug Application to Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) for its investigational fusion protein linking recombinant coagulation factor IX with recombinant albumin (rIX-FP).

rIX-FP is a long-acting recombinant albumin fusion protein for people with hemophilia B, a congenital bleeding disorder characterized by deficient or defective factor IX. Based on the 2011 National Survey of Coagulation Disorder, hemophilia B occurs in around one to two of every 100,000 male births in Japan.

The US Food and Drug Administration, the EMA and Swissmedic are currently reviewing CSL Behring’s license applications for rIX-FP. ~ www.thepharmaletter.com
